The Offer
- Become a new NFCU member and open a checking account with the promotional code SUMMER17 and receive a bonus of $150 when you complete the following requirements:
- Receive a Direct Deposit of Net Pay of $500+ within 90 days of account opening
- If the DDNP stops within one year they reserve the right to reclaim the bonus
The Fine Print
- A minimum Direct Deposit of Net Pay (DDNP) of $500 must be posted to your new checking account within 90 days of account opening in order to be eligible for bonus. DDNP consists of an electronic deposit of wages, pension and/or social security benefits.
- Any allotments or other transfers of funds, including Mobile/Scan Deposits and/or ATM deposits, are not considered DDNP and do not qualify.
- Please allow up to eight weeks for the $150 to be posted to your primary checking account.
- Limit one per member.
- If DDNP stops within one year, Navy Federal reserves the right to reclaim the incentive.
- Recipient is solely responsible for any personal tax liability arising out of the acceptance of this incentive.
- Checking account must be opened between 6/26/2017 and 7/31/2017 in order to be eligible for bonus. Offer can expire anytime without prior notice.
Avoiding Fees
It seems like the account needs to be kept open for twelve months and you need direct deposit during that period otherwise they reserve the right to reclaim the bonus. They have two free checking accounts (active duty and everyday checking) so no need to worry about any monthly fees.
Our Verdict
Better than the $50 bonus they previously offered, looks like it’s a hard pull to join as well. The big downside to this offer is the fact that you need the direct deposit hitting the account for 12 months as well. Obviously joining isn’t worth it just for the bank account bonus (due to the hard pull) but they do offer good credit card bonuses (including the $300 you could get from joining here) and sometimes they have good CD rates. You can read more about their credit cards here.

I did not get the $150 checking bonus since the past deposits showed as -ACH Transaction – DFAS-CLEVELAND ALLOTMENT ACH Credit $500.00. I called in since I only had $200 in reward points credited in the past month. They said the other $100 reward points will come next statement cycle. Opened on 7/4, completed spend by 8/7/17 statement. They literally take at least the 90 days + 8 weeks to receive the reward.
This offer is currently listed on the DoC deal calendar https://www.doctorofcredit.com/deal-calendar-full-list-deals-credit-card-bank-bonuses-expiry-dates/ as expiring on Aug 31, but this post says it expired on Jul 31.

Any recent news on the new rewards credit card that NFCU is developing in partnership with Amex?
Not yet, will post as soon as we know more.
Wish there was a easy way to join
I received bonkers sized credit limits. If you’re rebuilding your score or looking to decrease credit utliization, this is the place to do it.
I don’t think they’re too strict on their membership requirements, just do some research
I believe their used to be a back door to membership ages ago. However I am not aware of any presently. Fortunately I have an Uncle who is a member. (That however doesn’t qualify me!) So I got my Father to join, (through relationship to my Uncle) which instantly made me qualify for membership.
I agree that their credit cards are great for rebuilding credit. A couple words of caution though, I would advise minimal use on them, and keeping strong tabs if you do. The last I was aware setting up a real auto-pay was impossible if you didn’t have a checking account with them. (You could set up a Set amount like $25 per month, but could not have the minimum amount due or total bill paid.) Not sure if this has changed as I NEVER use there card due to this out-dated non-sense.
NFCU only requires that you have a relative who’s been in the military, it doesn’t require that they be an NFCU member (unlike USAA). The qualifying relative can be deceased.
Ez-start cd’s are worth it to join.
Definitely a hard pull to join.
what if I’m recently a new member and only have the savings account? Do i qualify?
Strangely it seems that the credit card offer is restricted to new NFCU members who join between 6/26/2017 and 7/31/2017, but the bank account offer seems to be open just to anyone who opens a new bank account between 6/26/2017 and 7/31/2017?
