[Expired] Office Depot/Max: $15 Instant Discount on $300 of ‘Everywhere’ Visa Gift Cards

This deal has expired, view more Office Depot/Max deals here.

The Offer

People are reporting a deal showing up in Office Max/Depot stores for the ‘Everywhere’ Visa gift card line:

  • Get a $15 instant discount when purchasing $300 in Everywhere Visa gift cards, including the Grocery, Fuel, Dining, Movies, and Style versions of the card.

The Fine Print

  • Limit 1 per household/business
  • Discount applied at register
  • Valid 5/6 – 15/12
  • One offer per transaction
  • Issued by Metabank
  • Card works as a Visa debit card; no cash access

Our Verdict

These cards are Visa cards which are limited to working at merchants who code within their category. For example, the grocery Visa card will only work at grocery stores.

They aren’t nearly as useful as ordinary Visa gift cards, though they do have the advantage of a lower fee of just $4.95 per $200 card. If you have a way of unloading these easily, you’ll be netting $5.10 on each 2 x $200 purchased, plus of course you’ll get the bonus office supply credit card rewards points with Chase INK or a different card.

Some grocery stores and gas stations might sell money orders, or you can buy other gift cards at the grocery/gas as well, e.g. Amazon gift cards or whatever. It’s also a good deal for someone who simply spends a lot in one of these categories, e.g. if you eat out a lot – you’ll lock in a 1.2% discount + 5x rewards by going this route.

There is a limit of one for this deal which means you presumably can’t do more than one of this deal in a single transaction. Depending on your store velocity limits and your liquidation thresholds, it might make sense to buy $200 + $100 cards instead of two $200s.

Reader Phill also notes you can get an additional $5 discount on a purchase at Office Max/Depot by using Google or Samsung Pay along with Paypal. Note, this might not get you an office supply coding on the credit card.

There’s also another deal being advertised in the weekly circular to get 5% back in store rewards when you buy $50+ in the following gift card brands: Office Depot/Max, Kohl’s, Macy’s, Bath & Body Works, Bed Bath & Beyond, Michael’s, and Sephora.

Hat tip to JH and to reader Phill

I read in some other blogs the grocery ones work at Costco warehouse. Can anyone confirm if other cards work?

Ken
Ken

Any Visa card (prepaid/gift, debit, credit) should work at Costco warehouse. I used 4 Visa gift cards bought from Safeway to pay at Costco and had no issues.

P
P

Yeah I usually do vanilla visa from my local groceries and use them at Costco since they have lower annual fees and grocery bonus categories give me higher rewards than the 2% rewards Costco card would give. But I’m asking about the everywhere cards (restaurant everywhere, grocery everywhere, etc.). Which other ones would work at Costco besides the grocery everywhere?

yes it does

Dining card works in Costco for regular purchase

Samsung+paypal will code as office supply? If not probably not worth it. Unless you can split tender and put $5 (5.01) on s&pp

Has anyone had any luck using the grocery cards at Walmart?

Abe

I have used the Fashion ones at Walmart with no issues. I’m pretty sure the Grocery would work there too. YMMV, it is not hard coded at their registers but YMMV mostly based on whether cashiers will let use gift cards or not, some WM cashiers take a look at your debit cards to make sure that it is not a gift card. A WM Superstore cashier chose not to run my gift card because she said no gift cards allowed, she even kept staring at my wallet making sure I did not switched my debit card back to a gift card before sliding so I just left.

I have had better luck at Walmart neighborhood markets. Also the lines are much shorter there.

With the last OD/OM promo, I used a Style card at Walmart (both regular and superstore) with no problems. There wasn’t that much info on the web about this, so I’m not sure if ALL Walmarts will work. But with the Staples deal also running, I’m going to pass on this one (my only OD isn’t well stocked and strictly enforces limits). For those folks without Staples stores, though, this is a decent alternative.

Abe & iahphx Have you tried using them at WM self checkouts?

iahphx

I was buying a money order — not something you do at self-checkout — so no.

Yes, have used the Grocery cards at WalMart many a time. Not a Neighborhood Market, but a normal Walmart/Supercenter

Does Amex and Gift card at OM/OD go well? For instance Staples report gift card purchases, wonder if OM/OD do the same too.

Wyle
Wyle

OM/OD also reports level 3 to Amex.

Trippy
Trippy

Dammit! Have to keep hoping my local grocery stores will keep me under radar, then.

Thank you!

CM

OD/OM 100% get reported to AmEx. You can even see in your detailed statements which of the everywhere cards you bought each visit etc.

> VISA META GROCERY $20-200

> VISA,DINING,$20-200

> INCOMM FEES 2

BTW, I did the $50 VisaSavingsEdge on all 3 of my Chase Ink cards, and haven’t gotten any statement credits yet — I wonder if they actually disqualify the purchase from the promotion due to the level 3 data as well. It certainly highlights the fragility of our hobby — OD/OM is probably responsible for most of my points; it would be devastating and disappointing the day it ends — what will we then do with all those Ink Plus and Ink Cash cards?!

Says gift cards excluded

William Charles

Anybody know if this is enforced? I know it hasn’t been in the past but YMMV.

I can report that I made 2 purchases last week and both posted. This may not be a DP you want broadcast far and wide, given Chuck’s comment…

Peter
Peter

Yeah please don’t broadcast this wide. When ebates in-store first launched OD/OM was a launch store and everyone freaked out publishing get cashback on gift cards (terms excluded them). Cashback posted/pending then withdrawn before quarterly payouts.

William Charles

=), I won’t. People can read the comments to find this sort of information IMO.

Tall T

That was my thought as well, let the people willing to work a little have the potential of getting some extra $$!

+1…good call and so glad I already had my cards linked from last weeks 6% deal. Cheers!

If anyone sees it actually show up let me know. It does say under conditions excludes Gift Card purchases. I did one a week ago and so far nothing.

On Monday, I’ll be the DP I want to see and report back

I will confirm these are limited to 1 offer per day per OD.

I will also confirm that these can be used for a MO at local grocery didn’t try WM.

The only downside is there is no pre-set PIN you have to go online and “Personalize your PIN”.

Hope that helps just got 2 today and tested!

Phill
Phill

1. YMMV on your limit pending the store and their leniency.
2. It is a pre-set PIN (the last 4 digits of the card)

I personally can confirm this. Cheers!

I mean you can do 10 in a transaction but the discount only will give you $15 Off.

IME about 1/10 OD stores will allow you to do 2 transactions. The other 9/10 are strict about it claiming it’s their policy. I’ve requested to see this policy several times they can never actually produce the acclaimed policy yet they still enforce it.

I actually waited for a store manager to search for the policy he said he’s worked there 10 years and it’s always been a policy. After 20 minutes of searching he gave up saying that he knows it’s policy but since he can’t find it he will do the two transactions very begrudgingly and made sure I used the same card for both.

Every time I’ve gone back since he stares me down and I don’t really feel like trying two transactions there again.

Wonder if there is a difference between OM and OD? I run multiples of these offers at my OM whenever I am in the mood. Of course, I am in there about 3 times a week, buy a lot of actual merchandise, and know the manager quite well.

No difference same POS same company for a couple years now.

I have a grocery store that only takes debit cards, no credit cards. Does anyone know it the Visa gift card runs as a debit?

Yes

I just bought 2x $200 grocery cards at OM with 5x UR grandfathered Ink card. Immediately used it at Jewel-Osco next door, no problem. Last 4 PIN.

Then used it to buy a $25 ebay GC as a test. This worked, and is nice because Albertson’s own GCs, which I can buy at OM, do NOT work to buy third-party GCs. So 5x + 1.25% cashback there.

It also worked at Aldi.

Wasn’t able to use the Grocery Everywhere at WM for MO purchase.

Matt

The card didn’t work or the cashier didn’t let you try? There are multiple DP’s of the Grocery Everywhere working at WM.

sheila

I did it at the customers services at two different times. I’m in MA. I was in Walmart today and they didn’t allow me to split tender. They said only one swipe of card for MO. They keep changing the policy and it gets harder n harder each time.
