The first Dans Deals article was written from a point of view where he misread the statement, thinking that it said they were fighting chargebacks on canceled flights. They are not fight those chargebacks. They are only fighting them on flights that operated as scheduled. Deltas policy is better than most airlines where they are not pushing chargebacks back onto travel agents.

I don’t think you should be linking an article that has a very incorrect headline.

For those of us in USA, there is a DOT level 4 DO NOT TRAVEL advisory. Wouldn’t you be able to claim a chargeback based on this situation? How can airlines fight you for following government recommendations?

That’s a Department of State advisory, and the advisory is not to travel abroad. If your flight is going abroad it’s very likely that it’s going to be cancelled and you’ll be entitled to a refund. But it doesn’t apply to domestic travel.

There are routinely flights to Level 4 places. I’ve taken them. They were totally 100% normal flights in every way. Now after you arrive you may want to arrange a security detail while you go about your business but that’s not the airline’s concern so long as they get you there safely. Could I get a refund on my ticket if I decided the local warlord situation was suddenly too hot for me to handle? I don’t see why.

We were due to fly March 27 for vacation. I would have rather cancelled and just return the points to my bank but knowing I would lose the EBCI funds for cancelling, I moved the flight to a random date next fall. If you change the flight (vs. cancel), it keeps the same reservation number, and you don’t lose your EBCI funds. Eventually we’ll fly again. If I knew back then that they were going to refund those fees, I would have cancelled the flight.

 William Charles Just wanted to point out that the Delta article states they are only fighting chargebacks related to *operated* flights. Delta is accepting chargebacks related to cancelled flights as refunds. Dan updated his article to reflect this.

From my view, Delta has been fair throughout this situation (unlike some other airlines…)

The fact that they’re accepting chargebacks related to cancelled flights is still bullshit. Delta should follow the law and its Contract of Carriage by offering refunds when passengers call in rather than make them resort to a CC dispute. Especially after we all just bailed these guys out.

If they are offering refunds on canceled flights, why are passengers needing to file CC disputes to get their money back on canceled flights? Here’s what’s happening: passengers are calling reservations, reservations is telling them travel voucher only, then passengers are filing a dispute, then Delta is issuing a refund. My point is there would be no reason for a CC dispute of this kind if Delta simply followed the DOT law and issued refunds at the first point of contact. Unless I’m misunderstanding?

They’re not…they’re filling chargebacks on flights that were operated.

Customers are doing chargebacks on operated flights and canceled flights. With operated flights, Delta should win and the customer should get a travel voucher. With canceled flights, it never should come to a chargeback: Delta should offer refunds when customers first call in; they’re not and being stubborn, so customers are left with filing a chargeback so that Delta follows the law. Right?

Why should Delta win if they refuse to let you cancel or change your flight? Incompetence should not be accepted as an excuse for screwing the customer.
