Avoiding Fees

There is an early account termination fee of $25 if closed within 6 months. The easiest account to keep fee free that is eligible for the bonuses is the popular everyday checking account. This has a $10 monthly fee that is avoided if you do either of the following;

  • $1,000 in average monthly checking balance OR
  • by setting regular monthly direct deposit of a minimum aggregate amount of $750

Our Verdict

As mentioned in the title I think it’s best to think of this as a checking bonus offer of $200 and a savings bonus offer of $300. Let’s look at them individually:

  • $200 checking: Worth doing. Highest bonus previously was $125 and actually had more requirements. Pretty easy to keep account fee free and not that difficult to meet the bonus requirements.
  • $300 savings bonus: Requires $10,000 for 60 days, not sure what the interest rate is but I assume it’s basically 0% APY. If you have $10,000 laying around then a return of $300 for 60 days is 3% (over 60 days or ~18.25% annualized). Great deal if you have the money.

    told me to go into branch which the nearest is down in Sunrise. I’ll call first before I schlep down there.

    A lot of inquires in last few months, does going to branch increase the chance getting approved?

    “maintain $10,000 or more of new money for 60 days from the date of deposit”, normally bank specifies deposit $10000 within 10 days of account opening, but here they don’t specify the day limit at all, is it the initial deposit required $10000(though this doesn’t make sense) or simply multiple deposits add up to $10000 balance with no day limit or one single $10000 deposit?

    The way I read this post (and the linked offer) is you just need to open a new account to be eligible.Seems that could help get around any chex issues (having likewise abused M&T)

    From personal experience this bank was a hassle to set up a new account and get the previous $125 offer linked above, but interesting if this offer lets you just add a new account to an existing customer login / relationship and get the $200 + $300 w/i 90 days.

            So it looks like people in my shoes are eligible. However, anyone in this position might want to send their own SM on this point so they have it in writing.

            I haven’t yet applied for this account but probably will in the next couple of weeks or so.

          Yah, I saw the lifetime language, but didn’t think it applied to *any* bonus for a single customer. Looks like EO got the answer below as well. I’m going to SM to confirm as well.

            You are correct. I got two different bonuses at the same time ($300 Coral Gables Branch offer and $125 regular offer that was also available at that time) for only one Popular Checking account. So, you can get only one bonus per offer per lifetime.

            I took the plunge and applied today. I used the link above and the option to pre-populate the app as an existing customer by entering in my current account # and the prior statement ending balance. I assume this avoided the risk of chex etc. rejection…

            Application took 2 minutes to do, basically confirmed the pre-populated info was correct and entered the external account info needed to fund the $25 opening amount.

            They are doing 2 trial DD’s and I need to come back to verify. Got a confirmation # for the app so hoping this goes smoothly and is linked to existing account without issue.

            Did not see a mention of the bonus within the actual application process so hoping it is attached in the back end somehow

Just opened my first Popular Every Day Checking account very quickly by providing my current checking account number and the prior statement ending balance. Funded with $25. Waiting for the trial deposits verification to finish the application.

            Update – My application apparently failed due to a system issue on their side even though the test DD’s went through to my funding account.

            I had to call in to find out…then they told me I need to apply again and hope they worked the bugs out.

      What? That’s nonsense… There is no such relationship. The Banco Popular you’re talking is from Spain and does not have any relationship whatsoever with Popular Community Bank in the US nor its parent bank Banco Popular in Puerto Rico.

    Just got off the phone with internet support in PR. She had me apply again while she held on.I got the same error about needing to go into the branch. She was able to see my app and checked error. Turns out they are having a connection problem with verification with experian. She told me to apply in the branch. She had no idea when the problem would be fixed-started yesterday. Branches are opened 8-5 m-th and till 6 on Friday. No Saturday hours. FYI, closest branch to Palm Beach County is Sunrise I believe.
    I will update if I decide to go down. $500 is pretty tempting…..

      I can confirm there is something going on with Experian. I attempted to do a free credit report this morning and the only report that wasn’t available to due a problem was Experian.

      I got the same error as everyone else while attempting to apply online for the bank account.

    There’s a branch down the street from my office in Manhattan. Walked by it today and they had the $200+$300 promotion on their windows so I walked in.

    Gave the bank rep my license and he opened the account within half hour. Confirmed the bonuses and everything. I’ve opened probably 10 checking accounts in the last year but it wasn’t a problem.

    Waiting for my internet banking login and will transfer the 10k and let’s see what happens. Hopefully they’re not a pain in the ass to get bonuses from!

    Applied for both accounts in person [Manhattan]. Super friendly rep gave me a talking-to when she saw all the recent inquiries, but was authorized (and seemingly motivated) to help push it through — just required a couple of override codes.

    However, she couldn’t finalize the promotions w/o having the funding in place. Sans checkbook, I had no way to fork over $10k, so we left things pending with a promise to return first thing tomorrow. If you’re like me and rarely set foot in a physical bank, don’t forget this quirk before driving out of your way to an eligible branch!

        Related to this, I’m not sure it’s fair to link to those data points as what counts as a DD, since the prior bonus only required 3 ACH deposits, which is different from the explicit language around employer DD in this one. Thoughts?

        • I always encourage people to look at the date of when the datapoints were listed. They are still relevant as it’s easier to change the fine print than the back end system but as always YMMV.

    “The promotion states that “Bonuses are limited to one per customer, per lifetime,” meaning that you wouldn’t be able to get this exact promotion if you opened two of the same account. Since you haven’t had one of those accounts before, you would be ellegible to participate in this promotion.”

      My wife and I went to the Sunrise branch this morning and the manager said the promotion is more for people from that area, so they did not let us open accounts. She said we could try to apply online again once the online problem is solved, which as of today it is not. She did not know there was an online problem, so she called about it while we were there.

      A few days before we went I tried to apply online and it did not work, and then I called the Sunrise branch. The person said although the promotion is to get new customers from that area, we should go in and apply. That obviously was not correct advice.

    I opened an Everyday Checking Account in-person at a branch today. I was told that there is a minimum amount of $750 for the direct deposit. Also, “recurring” is defined as two direct deposits (of $750 each) over 60 days. Please update the information above that indicates that there is no minimum dollar amount for the direct deposit.

      The written terms of the offer (landing page and in-branch flyer) don’t state anything about $750. So I don’t see how they could deny the bonus based on that.

        MONTHLY SERVICE FEE: $10
        Monthly service fee can be avoided by maintaining $1,000 in average monthly checking balance OR by setting up a recurring monthly Direct Deposit of a minimum aggregate amount of $750.00.

        As per Popular Everyday Checking account discloures, for the account monthly fee, Direct Deposit is defined as Electronic funds transfer made through the National Automated Clearing House Association (NACHA).

        However, for the bonus requirements, the Direct Deposit definition is more restricted.

      I just called Customer Service and asked abotu the DD amount and they just said any amount as long as it’s recurring. So I asked them, how about if I DD $200 every two weeks (which is how often I’m paid), and she said yes that will trigger the bonus.

    Just opened an account in-branch in NYC (Park Ave). There was some confusion initially about needing to fund the 10k with a check *today* to open the account vs. just fund it later and hold it for 60 days following. The banker had to ask her supervisor who confirmed that you could fund the $10k at a later time. I did initial funding with $25 in cash. Note I already have an account from the $125 bonus last year, but they still had to take my ID, etc.

    Another ambiguous point is around the $200 bonus DD(s). The promo language says “… set up recurring monthly direct deposit within 60 days”. To me, you could read this as just have at least one DD (of any amount) within 60 days. The banker seemed to think it had to be at least 2 DDs of $750+ within 60 days, but I think she was confusing that with the monthly fee waiver requirements. Does “recurring” imply every 2 weeks? Every month? Every quarter? I guess time will tell…

    I opened an acct with them last year. I had it just long enough to transfer funds from my bank to them so I could do some bill pays. The funds were in limbo when they shut my acct down.
    Their CSRs were beyond rude when I inquired as to why, treating me like I was attempting something criminal. After multiple phone calls and pleas to my bank to pull the funds back, I was finally told the reason is that I live too far away. I live in South Jersey around 10 miles east of Philly. The nearest branch is around 1 hour drive.
    It was a huge headache and I finally got my money back around 2 months later.
    Just a heads up since according to criteria listed I should qualify but apparently I don’t.

      I live in South Jersey near Atlantic City. I was thinking bout driving to Newark NJ (1.1 /2 Hr. Drive). Now I am confused after reading Patti’s comment. I don’t have time to fight with them to get my 10,000 back.
      What should I do?

        Mike, I’m in Cherry Hill. The nearest branch IIRC is in Perth Amboy, 6 exits up the turnpike. Apparently that is not close enough.
        It was a different bonus last year; nothing involving $10k. It was stressful enough with just $300. I did get all of my money back eventally. The customer service, or lack of, was startling. Even from that first call to inquire why I wasn’t able to log in. They were always with a defensive tone. If they they had just come out and said, “Sorry, our policy states you must live within a 25 mile radius of one of our branches to bank with us, but all of your money will be refunded within 30 days.” it wouldn’t have been so upsetting. I kept getting different stories. Some told me it would be returned to my linked bank in 2 business days but then 4 days later it still wasn’t returned. Then I was told it would take a week but 10 days later it still wasn’t.
        Just a lot of stress. I can’t imagine if it were huge sums. I’d be in their office and they’d be calling the police on me going bezerk.

        First, call your closest Popular Community branch directly and ask the branch manager if based on your location you are eligible to apply.
        Second, contact Popular Community Bank Customer Service either at PopularNet@bpop.com or 1-800-377-0800. I would prefer the e-mail to have a confirmation in writing.

    07/23/2017 Opened my first Popular Every Day Checking account online by providing my current checking account number and that account last statement ending balance.
    07/25/2017 Verified the trial deposits.
    07/26/2017 So far, I just had received a confirmation number not an account number. Since the account number was not showing in Popular Community Bank online banking, I called 1-800-377-0800. CSR told me the online application failed and I should apply in person at a branch.
    07/27/2017 Finally, opened my first Popular Every Day Checking account in person at Coral Gables branch.
    CSR SAID ONLINE APPLICATION IS FAILING FOR EVERYBODY AND THEY ARE INSTRUCTING PEOPLE TO APPLY IN PERSON AT THE BRANCH.

        PLEASE READ PATTI’S COMMENTS ABOVE. IT SEEMS THAT YOU SHOULD LIVE RELATIVELY CLOSE TO ONE OF THEIR BRANCHES TO BE ELIGIBLE TO APPLY.
        So, be careful because their online system does not verify any of those requirements before you apply. Then, they may shut down your account without even notifying you if they perform an after the fact manual review.
        For example, I realized my online application failed because I was on top of it. They never notified me about their online system failure, and they never apologized for their online system fiasco either.

    For the record, they never did say one has to live within a 25 mile radius, or any other radius. Nor did they come out and state I would get my money back in 30 days. Those were just examples I used in the earlier post in that I wished they had been more honest and direct in saying why it was closed and when I’d get my money back. I kept getting different answers by different people, none of which were true.

    Last summer I was new to chasing bank bonuses and had never yet read about anyone’s account being shut down by the bank. In hindsight it was all ok in the end but while I was dealing with them, they were extremely rude & unhelpful, not at all the typical “customer service” tone I’d get with any other business I dealt with. It felt like they just took my money and closed it.

    Anyway, as per Kevin’s comments on 07/20/2017 12:28 pm, the Sunrise branch manager said the promotion is more for people from that area. Thus, the branch manager did not let Kevin and his wife open accounts because they are from West Palm Beach. Therefore, your hypothesis of one living relatively close to one of their branches may be true.
    So far, I have always received an excellent service from Coral Gables branch officers.

      I understand. I only decided to elaborate when I read Chris saying he is within 25 miles of a branch. I just wanted to make clear that is not a rule I was told of from Popular Bank. I should have originally said “X” miles instead of giving a real number that others might interpret as a true bank policy.

      Also it states that South Florida is eligible. Is West Palm Beach not considered South FL? Looks south to me, but what do I know? lol Only that Orlando is considered central FL.

    BE AWARE THAT THERE IS A $2 PAPER STATEMENT FEE. SO, PLEASE ENSURE YOUR NEW CHECKING ACCOUNT IS ENROLLED IN ONLINE STATEMENTS TO AVOID THAT FEE.

    Opened the account on 07/27/2017, got the $2 Paper Statement Fee on 08/04/2017 when the first statement closed.

    Called 1-800-377-0800. CSR refunded the $2 maintenance fee. There is a one-time courtesy fee reversal offered by Popular Community Bank.

    The $2 maintenance fee reversal is in process, scheduled to post on 08/07/2017 and the account balance is back to $10,000.

    Now, for the $300 bonus, I have to reset the clock for the 60 consecutive days the $10,000 deposit must be kept since the $2 fee caused the balance to go under $10,000 for 3 days.

      Thanks for the heads-up here Eduardo! Appreciate it. Thankfully, I had funded with $25 cash, so my balance stayed above $10k. If I were you, I’d still check-in with them on secure message after the original 60 days, as most of this stuff is pretty manual for them, and see if they can make the exception.

        On 08/05/2017, after noticing the balance went under $10,000, I deposited a $20 check using their mobile application.
        On 08/07/2017, both the $2 fee reversal and the $20 check transactions posted and my balance went up to $10,020.
        So, I will count the 60 days starting from 08/07/2017 not 07/27/2017.
        Anyway, I will follow your advice and send them a secure message on 09/26/2017, 60 days after the original $10,000 deposit to see if they can make an exception. Otherwise, I will have to check after 10/07/2017, 60 days after the balance went back over $10,000.

        In regards as to when the 60 days start counting from, I will forward this to the department to verify the information. The system will automatically detect that the 60 started on 8/7/2017, but since the balance dropping below $10,000 was due to the fee being charged incorrectly I have sent them the information to verify that the 60 days start counting from 7/27/17 instead. I will place notes on the account as soon as I get an answer.

    Ok, here my Data, tried to open account online, 2 days ago, after all application questions and verification questions – I got error message “unfortunately, we cannot process your application at this time…… call 888-533-5333” this is wrong number to call, then they give you another number when you call this 888, and then after you call that number you have to call this number 800-377-0800 – ask for online application department! Then funny thing started – they said they don’t see application – so it didn’t go through! second, they don’t know if they run Hard pull or Soft pull. Third, THEY SAID they aware that online application doesn’t work for a while already, they said next time you wanna apply online – please call us and verify if online application is functional. I told her they need to put a note or something online – so people don’t waste their time trying to open online BEFORE the issue been fixed! another bagel shop – not a bank!!!!

  43. Northern VA resident + another colleague from Northern VA
    Opened in person at an NJ branch
    Before going in, called to confirm that we can open the account for the bonus without being NJ residents.
    Banker confirmed with Manager that we can open the account if we acknowledge that there are no branches near our address
    Banker kinda knew we were opening the account for bonus and reminded us to keep account open for 6 months.
    Put in the initial 10K via check.
    Requested online banking later that evening and the system takes 24-72 hours to confirm your online banking request
    I got the online account setup the next evening
    I could see the 10K deposit being processed
    I setup trail deposits from Wells Fargo and Citi into the account.
    Will let them post and wait for the bonus.
    It seems it might be at least 90 days before the bonus posts, but hopeful that it posts early.
    I will report back with updates.

    Based on Patti’s comments above, I was skeptical of the account opening process in particular and the bank in general, but so far so good.
    The “within 25 miles of branch” restriction might be YMMV.

    is anyone else having trouble linking their bank accounts for DD? I’m going on 10+ days to link 360, as in, “have tried twice, and Popular never seems to receive the trial deposits”. To further complicate things, after I was already approved with the account open and showing my trial deposit, they sent me a paper questionnaire with a batch of irritating KYC queries and a second request to sign the signature card (I had already signed and sent the first).

      There are three different routing codes for the bank – depending on the State that the account resides. Perhaps you are using the wrong routing code?

    • I opened my account in-branch and have setup ACHs from 4 banks, with 3 of them credited to the account already. No problems here.

      Where are trying to push from?

        Capital one 360, and I used the routing code for New York – I’m pretty sure, as 360’s interface said “Popular Community Bank” in the transfer widget, but if someone knows it for sure…?
