    • $200 if you set up a recurring monthly direct deposit within 60 days of account opening
    • $300 if you deposit $10,000 or more of new money into your account and maintain that balance for 60 days

The Fine Print

  • Checking offer is available only for new Popular Prestige Checking and Popular Everyday Checking accounts.
  • Promotion begins on 07/10/17 and ends on 10/31/17. Popular Community Bank, in its sole discretion, reserves the right to change or terminate this offer at any time.
  • To receive the promotional $200 cash bonus, open a new Popular Prestige Checking or a new Popular Everyday Checking account in any Popular Community Bank branch or via, which shall be subject to our approval, and set up recurring monthly direct deposit within 60 days; the direct deposit needs to be an electronic deposit of sources such as payroll, pension and government benefits, among others. The $200 cash bonus will be deposited in the account within 90 days of account opening, if the checking account is in good standing, a direct deposit has been received in the account within 60 days and all requirements are met.
  • To receive the promotional $300 cash bonus, open a new Popular Prestige Checking account or Popular Everyday Checking, in any Popular Community Bank branch or via, which shall be subject to our approval. Deposit $10,000 or more of new money into the Popular Prestige Checking or Popular Everyday Checking account and maintain $10,000 or more of new money for 60 days from the date of deposit. • Bonuses are limited to one per customer, per lifetime, and may be subject to IRS form 1099-MISC. Banco Popular North America (referred to herein as “our” or “Popular Community Bank”) is a Member of the FDIC and operates under the assumed name “Popular Community Bank” in the market in which it operates. • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

There is an early account termination fee of $25 if closed within 6 months. The easiest account to keep fee free that is eligible for the bonuses is the popular everyday checking account. This has a $10 monthly fee that is avoided if you do either of the following;

  • $1,000 in average monthly checking balance OR
  • by setting regular monthly direct deposit of a minimum aggregate amount of $750

Our Verdict

As mentioned in the title I think it’s best to think of this as a checking bonus offer of $200 and a savings bonus offer of $300. Let’s look at them individually:

  • $200 checking: Worth doing. Highest bonus previously was $125 and actually had more requirements. Pretty easy to keep account fee free and not that difficult to meet the bonus requirements.
  • $300 savings bonus: Requires $10,000 for 60 days, not sure what the interest rate is but I assume it’s basically 0% APY. If you have $10,000 laying around then a return of $300 for 60 days is 3% (over 60 days or ~18.25% annualized). Great deal if you have the money.

These offers are going straight to the best bank bonus page.

  1. Ry5 says:

So essentially you could just deposit $25, they post the bonus, then you remove your $200, leave $25 in there for the early termination fee?

  2. Dan says:

I think it’d be good to note they are Chex sensitive, I was denied with 9 inquiries in the past year (looking at you M&T) and a friend was denied with 4…

  3. Harold says:

The direct link does not say anything about a savings account. It looks like the $200 and $300 offers are both for the checking account.

  4. Reuben says:

couldn’t open online and I’m in Palm Beach. Maybe they don’t consider us part of south Florida?!
told me to go into branch which the nearest is down in Sunrise. I’ll call first before I schlep down there.

  5. David says:

Thank you for your interest in opening a Popular account.
At this time, we are unable to open your account electronically. To continue your account application, please visit one of our branch locations.

Please access the form provided here, for an explanation of your rights under state and federal laws.

I am in West Palm Beach. Opened 10+ accts this year

  6. Stack101 says:

A lot of inquires in last few months, does going to branch increase the chance getting approved?

“maintain $10,000 or more of new money for 60 days from the date of deposit”, normally bank specifies deposit $10000 within 10 days of account opening, but here they don’t specify the day limit at all, is it the initial deposit required $10000(though this doesn’t make sense) or simply multiple deposits add up to $10000 balance with no day limit or one single $10000 deposit?

  7. SS says:

Were there any requirements stating that previous bonus recipients (the $125 offer) and / or existing account holders are not eligible?

The way I read this post (and the linked offer) is you just need to open a new account to be eligible.Seems that could help get around any chex issues (having likewise abused M&T)

From personal experience this bank was a hassle to set up a new account and get the previous $125 offer linked above, but interesting if this offer lets you just add a new account to an existing customer login / relationship and get the $200 + $300 w/i 90 days.

    • EO says:

I sent a SM to them on exactly this point. Didn’t want to put $10,000 in there unless I have it in writing. I will let you know when I hear back from them.

      • SS says:

Just saw on the linked full offer footnote #5:

Bonuses are limited to one per customer, per lifetime, and may be subject to IRS form 1099-MISC. Oh well.

        • Thanks, added. Not sure how I missed that previously.

          • EO says:

Here was the reply to my SM on this point (recall I already earned the $125 bonus and told them this upfront.)

            Dear Customer,

Thank you for your recent inquiry and for visiting

Your are eligible for the promotion, please keep in mind that you need to bring new money and open the account. Once the requirement are met, the incentive can be credited to the account in 90 days.

So it looks like people in my shoes are eligible. However, anyone in this position might want to send their own SM on this point so they have it in writing.

I haven’t yet applied for this account but probably will in the next couple of weeks or so.

          • SS says:

            EO –

Can you post your SM full text? I’m lazy I want to copy haha, I’ll change it a bit.

You sent the SM through your existing online account portal, or somewhere else?

        • Jake N says:

Yah, I saw the lifetime language, but didn’t think it applied to *any* bonus for a single customer. Looks like EO got the answer below as well. I’m going to SM to confirm as well.

          • Eduardo Baez says:

You are correct. I got two different bonuses at the same time ($300 Coral Gables Branch offer and $125 regular offer that was also available at that time) for only one Popular Checking account. So, you can get only one bonus per offer per lifetime.

    • EO says:

Here was the text of my SM (sent through the online portal where I currently have an already existing account):

Am I eligible for the following offer if I open a second checking account:

($200 for direct deposit and $300 for depositing $10,000 in a new Prestige or Everyday Checking Account)

Or is this only available for brand new customers to the bank? Thanks.

      • SS says:

TY for providing, I’ll give it a try as well and report back.

        • SS says:

Got a more positive response that I’m eligible as an existing account holder and bonus recipient to my SM inquiry:

          Dear Customer,

Thank you for your recent inquiry and for visiting

Checking offer is available for new and existing customers that open a new Popular Prestige Checking or Popular Everyday Checking account.

The $200 cash bonus will be deposited in the account within 90 days of account opening, if the checking account is in good standing, a direct deposit has been received in the account within 60 days and all requirements are met.

If you have any additional questions or concerns, please e-mail us, or contact our Customer Care Center at 1-800-377-0800. Our business hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 midnight EST| Saturday and Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. EST.

          • SS says:

I took the plunge and applied today. I used the link above and the option to pre-populate the app as an existing customer by entering in my current account # and the prior statement ending balance. I assume this avoided the risk of chex etc. rejection…

Application took 2 minutes to do, basically confirmed the pre-populated info was correct and entered the external account info needed to fund the $25 opening amount.

They are doing 2 trial DD’s and I need to come back to verify. Got a confirmation # for the app so hoping this goes smoothly and is linked to existing account without issue.

Did not see a mention of the bonus within the actual application process so hoping it is attached in the back end somehow

          • Eduardo Baez says:

Thanks to EO, SS and Jake N for your valuable comments.
Followed your advice. Got similar response to my SM inquiry. Just opened my first Popular Every Day Checking account very quickly by providing my current checking account number and the prior statement ending balance. Funded with $25. Waiting for the trial deposits verification to finish the application.

          • SS says:

Update – My application apparently failed due to a system issue on their side even though the test DD’s went through to my funding account.

I had to call in to find out…then they told me I need to apply again and hope they worked the bugs out.

          • SS says:

Try #2 worked. I am funded and linked to existing online log in. xfering in $10K today…and setting up work DD

          • SS says:

            Opened Account: 8/8
            Deposited 10,000: 8/10
Paycheck DD (also did 3x Cap360 so don’t know what triggered): 9/1
            $200 DD Bonus: 10/12
            $300 10K bonus: 10/27

As stated above I still have the linked Popular checking account from the earlier $125 bonus this / last year. Also got targeted for the do 3x ATM withdrawals ($20 each…) with our app get $50 back in June

  8. kenny says:

one per lifetime, what is that mean? do I qualify if i got the $125 bonus last year? please tell

  9. K says:

Any relationship with the Banco Popular that just imploded/restructured & was acquired by Santander?

Is this part of Santander now? or were the US operations not part of the deal?

    • Don’t think the US operations were part of the deal, at least that’s what I remember reading when i saw news of that deal breaking.

    • ALX says:

What? That’s nonsense… There is no such relationship. The Banco Popular you’re talking is from Spain and does not have any relationship whatsoever with Popular Community Bank in the US nor its parent bank Banco Popular in Puerto Rico.

  10. Steven says:

Same message as everyone else, “unable to open your account electronically” with a link to a Chex adverse action notice. Oh well.

  11. PMartinez says:

Same as everyone else as well. Cant open online.

    Anyone go into branch yet?

  12. yussuf says:

“unable to open your account electronically”

  13. Ry5 says:

Same as everyone else. I live in NJ and have an NJ drivers license and everything. Told me to go in branch. I think it’s probably a scam to get people to come to their branches.

  14. zalmy says:

This sounds really awesome, but I’m not going to go ahead with this yet until someone can prove that they’ll actually allow someone with inquiries to open online.. US Bank turned me off, my first Chex denial

  15. Jacinto says:

After getting my acct closed by Santander for excessive MO deposits, does anyone have experience with this bank?

    • Jags says:

What type of volume were you doing at Santander? I thought I hit them hard with MOs…and they haven’t done squat in over 2 years.

  16. Reuben says:

Just got off the phone with internet support in PR. She had me apply again while she held on.I got the same error about needing to go into the branch. She was able to see my app and checked error. Turns out they are having a connection problem with verification with experian. She told me to apply in the branch. She had no idea when the problem would be fixed-started yesterday. Branches are opened 8-5 m-th and till 6 on Friday. No Saturday hours. FYI, closest branch to Palm Beach County is Sunrise I believe.
I will update if I decide to go down. $500 is pretty tempting…..

    • Chris says:

I can confirm there is something going on with Experian. I attempted to do a free credit report this morning and the only report that wasn’t available to due a problem was Experian.

I got the same error as everyone else while attempting to apply online for the bank account.

  17. Daryl J says:

Hi, does anyone know what can trigger direct deposit?

Charles, on the list of methods page I only see ‘Popular Bank’. Is it the same as Popular Community Bank? Thanks

  18. Johnny says:

There’s a branch down the street from my office in Manhattan. Walked by it today and they had the $200+$300 promotion on their windows so I walked in.

Gave the bank rep my license and he opened the account within half hour. Confirmed the bonuses and everything. I’ve opened probably 10 checking accounts in the last year but it wasn’t a problem.

Waiting for my internet banking login and will transfer the 10k and let’s see what happens. Hopefully they’re not a pain in the ass to get bonuses from!

  19. Richard says:

Applied for both accounts in person [Manhattan]. Super friendly rep gave me a talking-to when she saw all the recent inquiries, but was authorized (and seemingly motivated) to help push it through — just required a couple of override codes.

However, she couldn’t finalize the promotions w/o having the funding in place. Sans checkbook, I had no way to fork over $10k, so we left things pending with a promise to return first thing tomorrow. If you’re like me and rarely set foot in a physical bank, don’t forget this quirk before driving out of your way to an eligible branch!

    • Stephanie says:

You opened two accounts? Don’t you only need to open one, but complete two separate actions for the full $500?

      • Richard says:

Yes, two accounts. I’m guessing I was told that merely to pad the banker’s stats, but that’s fine with me, considering I openly admitted to churning.

Also: even after bringing the deposit check the following day, the accounts were not opened yet. I had to return a 3rd time, with copies of statements from all the other recently-opened banks, to prove to her that they weren’t fraud-ridden. (at first she said she’d be ok just seeing my stash of debit cards, but changed her mind)

Once open, I sent employer DDs to both accounts just to be safe. Given all the hassle, the bonuses better post! (I’m willing to break the “don’t talk to the bank” rule, given my extended interactions with the local supervisor already)

  20. Daryl Jameson says:

Please could you tell me if the ‘Popular Bank’ that’s in the ‘List of Methods that Count as Direct Deposit’ is the same as in this one, ‘Popular Community Bank’.

    • Yes, they are the same, Updated.

      • Daryl Jameson says:

Thanks!! I appreciate all the effort you guys put in this space, been following the site for a while.

      • Jake N says:

Related to this, I’m not sure it’s fair to link to those data points as what counts as a DD, since the prior bonus only required 3 ACH deposits, which is different from the explicit language around employer DD in this one. Thoughts?

        • I always encourage people to look at the date of when the datapoints were listed. They are still relevant as it’s easier to change the fine print than the back end system but as always YMMV.

  21. Jim says:

Got rejected trying to apply online so went into a branch. Took a little while but successfully opened. Darned if they didn’t have a complete history of every account I have opened this year (and there are many).

  22. Jake N says:

Got this response from my SM:

“The promotion states that “Bonuses are limited to one per customer, per lifetime,” meaning that you wouldn’t be able to get this exact promotion if you opened two of the same account. Since you haven’t had one of those accounts before, you would be ellegible to participate in this promotion.”

  23. ann says:

I have the ten thousand to deposit for the 300 bonus. What if I try signing up for the ACH deposit and it doesn’t come through, will I still be eligible for the 300 bonus. Does it pay to try to get the 200 bonus also?

  24. savemesf says:

Tried to apply online in NY today. Still doesn’t seem to work. Will try in branch.

  25. JW says:

Applied in branch today in NYC, Madison Ave branch. Super friendly guy, didn’t say a single word about my Chex despite me hitting it reasonably hard recently, in and out in maybe 20 minutes. Super painless.

  26. Reuben says:

Tried to apply online in SFL today. Still doesn’t work. Any DP about success going into a branch in SFL?

  27. Kevin says:

My wife and I are going to try at the branch in Sunrise FL tomorrow morning. We are in West Palm. I’ll let you know how it goes. I tried online last week like a lot of people but it didn’t work.

    • Kevin says:

My wife and I went to the Sunrise branch this morning and the manager said the promotion is more for people from that area, so they did not let us open accounts. She said we could try to apply online again once the online problem is solved, which as of today it is not. She did not know there was an online problem, so she called about it while we were there.

A few days before we went I tried to apply online and it did not work, and then I called the Sunrise branch. The person said although the promotion is to get new customers from that area, we should go in and apply. That obviously was not correct advice.

      • Reuben says:

that quite disappointing that they don’t consider West Palm Beach part of South Florida. Thanks for saving me the trip! I just called again and online applications are still down…..

      • Kevin says:

My wife and I both applied online last week and both were approved. We completed the initial deposit from another bank account, and we are now setting up the DD’s through Fidelity and a transfer of $10k. Hopefully that will be acceptable and we get the $500 bonus each.

  28. Brian C says:

I have one LITERALLY a block away from my home. As soon as my fiance and i clear our bonus’s from Capital one MMA, we are going to go open in branch.

  29. Mike says:

We have branch which is 70 miles away. When online works can any one update this so I can apply online.

  30. Johnny says:

The direct deposit requirements are quite vague. Just says recurring deposits for 3 months. Will any amount do? And do I need to have the deposits keep coming for the entire time? Was thinking of direct depositing 250 a month for 3 months? Or is that too much work?

  31. Joshua says:

I opened an Everyday Checking Account in-person at a branch today. I was told that there is a minimum amount of $750 for the direct deposit. Also, “recurring” is defined as two direct deposits (of $750 each) over 60 days. Please update the information above that indicates that there is no minimum dollar amount for the direct deposit.

    • savemesf says:

The written terms of the offer (landing page and in-branch flyer) don’t state anything about $750. So I don’t see how they could deny the bonus based on that.

      • Eduardo Baez says:

A recurring monthly Direct Deposit of a minimum aggregate amount of $750.00 is one of the options to keep the Popular Everyday Checking account free.

Monthly service fee can be avoided by maintaining $1,000 in average monthly checking balance OR by setting up a recurring monthly Direct Deposit of a minimum aggregate amount of $750.00.

As per Popular Everyday Checking account discloures, for the account monthly fee, Direct Deposit is defined as Electronic funds transfer made through the National Automated Clearing House Association (NACHA).

However, for the bonus requirements, the Direct Deposit definition is more restricted.

    • Johnny says:

I just called Customer Service and asked abotu the DD amount and they just said any amount as long as it’s recurring. So I asked them, how about if I DD $200 every two weeks (which is how often I’m paid), and she said yes that will trigger the bonus.

      • SamSimon says:

Johnny, What about DD once a month? will not work? Terms and Condition stated “recurring monthly direct” MONTHLY, not weekly or bi-weekly….

  32. Jake N says:

Just opened an account in-branch in NYC (Park Ave). There was some confusion initially about needing to fund the 10k with a check *today* to open the account vs. just fund it later and hold it for 60 days following. The banker had to ask her supervisor who confirmed that you could fund the $10k at a later time. I did initial funding with $25 in cash. Note I already have an account from the $125 bonus last year, but they still had to take my ID, etc.

Another ambiguous point is around the $200 bonus DD(s). The promo language says “… set up recurring monthly direct deposit within 60 days”. To me, you could read this as just have at least one DD (of any amount) within 60 days. The banker seemed to think it had to be at least 2 DDs of $750+ within 60 days, but I think she was confusing that with the monthly fee waiver requirements. Does “recurring” imply every 2 weeks? Every month? Every quarter? I guess time will tell…

    • SamSimon says:

Terms and Condition stated “recurring monthly direct” MONTHLY. How these “knowledgeable employees” can interpret it to something else?

    • SS says:

great question, I’m curious as well if it triggers for 1 vs. multiple

      • Jake N says:

Had an employer DD post a month ago and got confirmation via SM that one DD satisfied that requirement and I would receive the bonus:

“The $200 bonus will be deposited in the account within 90 days of account opening, if the checking account is in good standing, a direct deposit has been received in the account within 60 days and all requirements are met. The direct deposit received on 8/15/2017 has satisfied the requirement since the account was opened on 7/25/2017 and it was done before the 60 days of the opening of the account.”

Will confirm again once my 90 days is up.

  33. Patti says:

I opened an acct with them last year. I had it just long enough to transfer funds from my bank to them so I could do some bill pays. The funds were in limbo when they shut my acct down.
Their CSRs were beyond rude when I inquired as to why, treating me like I was attempting something criminal. After multiple phone calls and pleas to my bank to pull the funds back, I was finally told the reason is that I live too far away. I live in South Jersey around 10 miles east of Philly. The nearest branch is around 1 hour drive.
It was a huge headache and I finally got my money back around 2 months later.
Just a heads up since according to criteria listed I should qualify but apparently I don’t.

    • Mike says:

I live in South Jersey near Atlantic City. I was thinking bout driving to Newark NJ (1.1 /2 Hr. Drive). Now I am confused after reading Patti’s comment. I don’t have time to fight with them to get my 10,000 back.
      What should I do?
      Members / readers any suggestions?

      • Patti says:

Mike, I’m in Cherry Hill. The nearest branch IIRC is in Perth Amboy, 6 exits up the turnpike. Apparently that is not close enough.
It was a different bonus last year; nothing involving $10k. It was stressful enough with just $300. I did get all of my money back eventally. The customer service, or lack of, was startling. Even from that first call to inquire why I wasn’t able to log in. They were always with a defensive tone. If they they had just come out and said, “Sorry, our policy states you must live within a 25 mile radius of one of our branches to bank with us, but all of your money will be refunded within 30 days.” it wouldn’t have been so upsetting. I kept getting different stories. Some told me it would be returned to my linked bank in 2 business days but then 4 days later it still wasn’t returned. Then I was told it would take a week but 10 days later it still wasn’t.
Just a lot of stress. I can’t imagine if it were huge sums. I’d be in their office and they’d be calling the police on me going bezerk.

      • Eduardo Baez says:

I suggest you to do one of the two options below:
First, call your closest Popular Community branch directly and ask the branch manager if based on your location you are eligible to apply.
Second, contact Popular Community Bank Customer Service either at or 1-800-377-0800. I would prefer the e-mail to have a confirmation in writing.

  34. Eduardo Baez says:

07/23/2017 Opened my first Popular Every Day Checking account online by providing my current checking account number and that account last statement ending balance.
    07/25/2017 Verified the trial deposits.
07/26/2017 So far, I just had received a confirmation number not an account number. Since the account number was not showing in Popular Community Bank online banking, I called 1-800-377-0800. CSR told me the online application failed and I should apply in person at a branch.
07/27/2017 Finally, opened my first Popular Every Day Checking account in person at Coral Gables branch.

Very helpful information. Thank you Eduardo!

      • Eduardo Baez says:

        You are welcome Chris.
So, be careful because their online system does not verify any of those requirements before you apply. Then, they may shut down your account without even notifying you if they perform an after the fact manual review.
For example, I realized my online application failed because I was on top of it. They never notified me about their online system failure, and they never apologized for their online system fiasco either.

        • Chris says:

Thanks again! Very helpful info including Patti’s post.

Luckily, I am withing the 25 mile radius of their Sunrise Location.

I’m hoping to apply online if/when they have their online application system running properly.

  35. Patti says:

For the record, they never did say one has to live within a 25 mile radius, or any other radius. Nor did they come out and state I would get my money back in 30 days. Those were just examples I used in the earlier post in that I wished they had been more honest and direct in saying why it was closed and when I’d get my money back. I kept getting different answers by different people, none of which were true.

Last summer I was new to chasing bank bonuses and had never yet read about anyone’s account being shut down by the bank. In hindsight it was all ok in the end but while I was dealing with them, they were extremely rude & unhelpful, not at all the typical “customer service” tone I’d get with any other business I dealt with. It felt like they just took my money and closed it.

  36. Eduardo Baez says:

Thanks Patti for the clarification. I understand you just were trying to find an explanation of what happened because their customer service representatives never told you the truth.
Anyway, as per Kevin’s comments on 07/20/2017 12:28 pm, the Sunrise branch manager said the promotion is more for people from that area. Thus, the branch manager did not let Kevin and his wife open accounts because they are from West Palm Beach. Therefore, your hypothesis of one living relatively close to one of their branches may be true.
So far, I have always received an excellent service from Coral Gables branch officers.

    • Patti says:

I understand. I only decided to elaborate when I read Chris saying he is within 25 miles of a branch. I just wanted to make clear that is not a rule I was told of from Popular Bank. I should have originally said “X” miles instead of giving a real number that others might interpret as a true bank policy.

Also it states that South Florida is eligible. Is West Palm Beach not considered South FL? Looks south to me, but what do I know? lol Only that Orlando is considered central FL.

      • Chris says:

Eduardo and Patti, thank you both for the clarification!

Patti, I’m sorry you had such a terrible experience. Hopefully they do get your money back to you promptly.

  37. JohnnyD says:

Just chose the Apply in NJ button and got this message:

Thank you for your interest in opening a new account.
Unfortunately, we cannot process your application. For assistance, please navigate to our public website and choose the option to Contact us.

So looks like something is wrong with online applications.

    • JohnnyD says:

Looks like online applications are working now. When I click on the same button that I clicked on earlier today, it begins the application process. Looks like the issue was temporary.

      • HarryTheFirstHarry says:

Thanks for the heads up. I went one step further and actually completed the online application and got approved. Easy when it works!
So online appears working now and they seem to have resolved the previous verification issues. I had 10+ Chex in the past year but went through fine.

  38. HarryTheFirstHarry says:

BTW the bank seems to have the best short and long term CD rates at the moment – may be a promo and says new money which means the 10K you are using for this account cannot be used. Still 2.35 for 5 year and 1.50 for 13 months are awesome rates for the day.

  39. Eduardo Baez says:

To anyone who opened a new Popular Every Day or Popular Prestige checking account:

Opened the account on 07/27/2017, got the $2 Paper Statement Fee on 08/04/2017 when the first statement closed.

Called 1-800-377-0800. CSR refunded the $2 maintenance fee. There is a one-time courtesy fee reversal offered by Popular Community Bank.

The $2 maintenance fee reversal is in process, scheduled to post on 08/07/2017 and the account balance is back to $10,000.

Now, for the $300 bonus, I have to reset the clock for the 60 consecutive days the $10,000 deposit must be kept since the $2 fee caused the balance to go under $10,000 for 3 days.

    • Jake N says:

Thanks for the heads-up here Eduardo! Appreciate it. Thankfully, I had funded with $25 cash, so my balance stayed above $10k. If I were you, I’d still check-in with them on secure message after the original 60 days, as most of this stuff is pretty manual for them, and see if they can make the exception.

      • Eduardo Baez says:

        Thanks Jake.
On 08/05/2017, after noticing the balance went under $10,000, I deposited a $20 check using their mobile application.
On 08/07/2017, both the $2 fee reversal and the $20 check transactions posted and my balance went up to $10,020.
So, I will count the 60 days starting from 08/07/2017 not 07/27/2017.
Anyway, I will follow your advice and send them a secure message on 09/26/2017, 60 days after the original $10,000 deposit to see if they can make an exception. Otherwise, I will have to check after 10/07/2017, 60 days after the balance went back over $10,000.

      • Eduardo Baez says:

Please see below the CSR representative response to my secure message.

In regards as to when the 60 days start counting from, I will forward this to the department to verify the information. The system will automatically detect that the 60 started on 8/7/2017, but since the balance dropping below $10,000 was due to the fee being charged incorrectly I have sent them the information to verify that the 60 days start counting from 7/27/17 instead. I will place notes on the account as soon as I get an answer.

  40. SamSimon says:

Ok, here my Data, tried to open account online, 2 days ago, after all application questions and verification questions – I got error message “unfortunately, we cannot process your application at this time…… call 888-533-5333” this is wrong number to call, then they give you another number when you call this 888, and then after you call that number you have to call this number 800-377-0800 – ask for online application department! Then funny thing started – they said they don’t see application – so it didn’t go through! second, they don’t know if they run Hard pull or Soft pull. Third, THEY SAID they aware that online application doesn’t work for a while already, they said next time you wanna apply online – please call us and verify if online application is functional. I told her they need to put a note or something online – so people don’t waste their time trying to open online BEFORE the issue been fixed! another bagel shop – not a bank!!!!

  41. boogieforward says:

Any additional DPs on Popular closing your account without warning if you open other accounts while working towards this bonus?

I’d like to open BMO and M&T, but am nervous since I need to keep $10K here for 2 months while they might be monitoring my Chex…?

  42. Jingjing Lyu says:

    Any DPs?

  43. Northern VA resident + another colleague from Northern VA
Opened in person at an NJ branch
Before going in, called to confirm that we can open the account for the bonus without being NJ residents.
Banker confirmed with Manager that we can open the account if we acknowledge that there are no branches near our address
Banker kinda knew we were opening the account for bonus and reminded us to keep account open for 6 months.
Put in the initial 10K via check.
Requested online banking later that evening and the system takes 24-72 hours to confirm your online banking request
I got the online account setup the next evening
I could see the 10K deposit being processed
I setup trail deposits from Wells Fargo and Citi into the account.
Will let them post and wait for the bonus.
It seems it might be at least 90 days before the bonus posts, but hopeful that it posts early.
I will report back with updates.

Based on Patti’s comments above, I was skeptical of the account opening process in particular and the bank in general, but so far so good.
The “within 25 miles of branch” restriction might be YMMV.

  44. Preserve says:

ACH pushed from Chase Personal Checking last week and it has showed up as: “PREAUTHORIZED CREDIT JPMorgan Chase Ext Transfr 170811” – I’m concerned that isn’t going to work for the $200 bonus part – anyone else have other data points for which methods work?

  45. XXX says:

My ACH’s showed up as this:

PREAUTHORIZED CREDIT JPMorgan Chase Ext Trnsfr

  46. Flea says:

is anyone else having trouble linking their bank accounts for DD? I’m going on 10+ days to link 360, as in, “have tried twice, and Popular never seems to receive the trial deposits”. To further complicate things, after I was already approved with the account open and showing my trial deposit, they sent me a paper questionnaire with a batch of irritating KYC queries and a second request to sign the signature card (I had already signed and sent the first).

  47. Ewejay says:

Successfully opened account online Monday. 9 accounts in the last 12 months, 0 in previous 3 since we were dealing with a mortgage application.

I’m in-state but about 50 miles from the nearest branch.

  48. Peter says:

DP: Applied in a NYC branch about a week ago. No prior relationship with the bank – I live and work in NJ (where they also have branches). I said that I was visiting NYC for the day, heard about the bank and wanted to know what they had available. They took a copy of my license, the banker entered my information online and I was approved very quickly. Note that I attempted to apply online myself, being from one their states, and was told to apply in-branch.

If you can make the trip to a nearby branch I highly recommend it. Very friendly staff and a smooth application process.

  49. SamSimon says:

Just opened at local branch! With no issue! Only would mention there is $2 monthly fee for PAPER statement! Make paperless to avoid the fee!

  50. Preserve says:

I ACHed from Chase on August 11th and it is appearing as “PREAUTHORIZED CREDIT JPMorgan Chase Ext Trnsfr 170811” – for those of you who Chase ACHed and got the bonus, is this how yours appeared as well?

  51. Lovetoshare says:

Opened Everyday Checking and deposit $10,000 in check today at NYC Branch location.

Was advised New fund has a “30 days” hold period.

Set up online banking and ATM Pin # simultaneously at branch. Enrollment process is in effect immediately.

Husband opened a separate Everyday Check with a different CSR in same branch. No offer to set up online banking by her. Set up his online banking at home and will take 1-2 business day to complete enrollment process.

Their is no BONUS confirmation in print. Was told verbally as long as we met all requirements, Bonus will post within 90 days.

For those who is interested on the CD offering. The last day of 13 months CD – 1.5% will expire on 09/01/2017. Early withdrawal penalty is 271 days.

  52. Kaz says:

You essentially get 24.99% APR return which is pretty great. $208.34 for the first two months where you parked $10,000 and then $20.83 for the next four months where you parked $1000.

  53. Charlie says:

    Online Application was straightforward.

  54. Harold says:

I set up the account online and set up initial funding with an ACH pull from Incredible Bank. I verified the two test deposits online on the Banco Popular website and they pulled the funds from Incredible Bank. A few days later, I got an email saying:

“We have been unable to verify your external account(s) with the financial institution where it’s held. In this case, we need for you to provide proof of ownership of the account(s) that you are attempting to add; this can be the first page of a statement, or a voided check (must have your address).”

“Please note that your Popular Online Banking access has been locked until we are able to verify ownership of your external account.”

I sent them a screenshot of the statement from Incredible Bank. They would not accept that: a printout from the web was not good enough. I don’t have any paper statements from Incredible. After hours on the phone with them, they said that I could send them a letter from Incredible Bank saying that I own the account.

I’m working on getting the letter from Incredible. In the meantime, I have no access to online banking. I will never try to use their ACH transfer service again.

    • Harold says:

The people at Incredible Bank were incredibly helpful. They wrote the letter and sent it to me a few minutes later. I forwarded it to Popular, and my online banking was restored.

      • Ewejay says:

I’m happy for you Harold. And really aggravated for myself. I’ve had the same experience with Popular and pulling from my CU, but the Popular team is apparently in Puerto Rico, which has been destroyed by hurricanes, and I’ve been locked out of my account since September 7. Multiple phone calls, with requisite 20 minute hold times, have done nothing to elevate.

I understand much of it is out of their control but it’s getting ridiculous.

    • Bob says:

You made a rookie mistake – never bother with ACH pulling from a new account. The trouble is not worth it. Always push from your transfer hub account. Keeps everything more organized at your hub account, and ACH pushes generally post faster than do pulls, especially if you use Alliant or Ally

  55. Johnny says:

Does anyone know if you need to deposit the 10k all at once? I deposited 9.5k initially but I’ve made like 4x direct deposits of $750 so my total balance is much more than 10k now.

  56. Preserve says:

Anyone get the bonus yet? Just wondering when between the 60 days to meet requirements and 90 days to get paid they actually post the bonuses…

    • Jags says:

      Nothing yet!

    • HarryTheFirstHarry says:

Nothing yet for me either. I have tried 2xC1s and 2xChase so far…past 60 days now from first set of 2xDDs. Since it is past 60 days from account open, I cannot even try emp DD anymore. Also made multiple deposits to reack 10k and have to wait 90 days for that as well.

  57. DirtyLilRat says:

Does Cap 360 still count as DD?

  58. usr22 says:

Opened account in branch (NYC) today- the process took about 20 minutes, which is the fastest I have experienced in opening an account in branch. The staff were also quite friendly.

About the bonus requirement for DD, the banker just told me to make ONE DD of any amount to this account within 60 days, and the bonus will post after 30 days.

  59. RW says:

Not eligible if received bonus before according to the secure message received:
“Bonuses are limited to one per customer, per lifetime, and may be subject to IRS form 1099-MISC. If you have previously received a different new account bonus from us, you are not eligible for this promotion.”

  60. XXX says:

Anyone receive bonus from either requirement?

  61. Aravind says:

Promotion updated in their website. Opening a savings account not required

Get $200 when you open a new Popular Prestige Checking or Popular Everyday Checking account and set up direct deposit.
Get $300 when you open a new Popular Prestige Checking or Popular Everyday Checking account with a deposit of at least $10,000 in new money and maintain the $10,000 balance for 60 days.
Get $500 when you open a new account with direct deposit AND at least $10,000 in new money!

  62. Daniel says:

Opened online, kind of bummed about no CC funding

  63. GRR says:

Opened in person, as an out of state resident without a local address. As long a plausible reason that I was “out of market area”, they opened it. ChexSystems placards are in view. Process was quick to open the account. Got 3 starter checks with the routing/acct number printed on them for the ACH setup.

  64. XXX says:

$200 bonus hit today. Waiting on $300 bonus now.
Not sure which DD triggered it, I did from a few different sources.

Got the $200 today too! Push from CO360 triggered it.

Didn’t get the $300 yet. 90 days will be next week for me.

    • XXX says:

90 days will be next week for me as well.

      • HarryTheFirstHarry says:

Could you say what was the DD amount? I did chase push of $200 around 8/10, but still no bonus. I have followed up with C1 pushes as well around 9/15, but this likely means C1 works but not Chase.

Also regardin ghte 10K, is everyone pulling it out after 60 days for waiting 90 days for bonus to post? The requirement only seems to say it has to be there 60 days.

        • SamSimon says:

Amount of Chase ACH – was $132, and another was $134

          • sp says:

I opened an account today, got the confirmation code to verify trial deposits for initial deposit. Would love to get $500. Do I have enough days to complete all the requirements?

  67. Flea says:

I didn’t see requirements to keep the Prestige fee free, so adding ’em here per bank’s own site:

I too received $200 bonus yesterday 10/12, and by DD alone, with whatever method it was, posting as “Preauthorized Credit”. (Sorry I cannot be more precise for future generations as I tried, variantly, all of Serve, Ally, and Capital One, in an excess of caution.)

    • Milo says:

This is probably a silly question but I am doing this for the first time. Could you please tell me if this is correct?
From your chase account you go to: 1) pay and transfer 2) transfer money 3) add new external account 4) you add you community bank account and routing number.
Is that correct? Is this how you do an ACH transfer?

  90. titiex says:

Hi, the terms state promotion ends on 10/31. That means I have to open account AND deposit 10K before 10/31 or could I apply on 10/30 and deposit the 10k on 11/4? I have the 10K tied to to the chase savings till 11/4..

  91. Bill says:

Does it have to be 60 consecutive days for the $300 bonus? I complete 30 days today but need the funds for 10 days. So if I make a withrawal and deposit the funds back by 11/05 and maintain the funds for 30 additional days, will it work?

  92. Jags says:

    $300 posted 10/27!

  93. GM says:

Just did this today in branch in NJ (as a state resident) and deposited the 10K check. The person who helped me was the branch supervisor and said I should get the 300 bonus though the funds may not be fully available by 10/31. Hopefully it works out. Will setup push from Chase for the other 200! Thanks everyone and Doc!

  94. Mr. M. says:

I also succeeded just today to transfer the money. It should arrive by 31st hopefully.
But let me tell you about my experience so far…
First had problem to register because couldn’t verify my identity because of the stupid questions. The question I couldn’t answer right, two times in a raw was about the nearest street of some old address of mine. Finally from the third time I got it looking on google maps…
Next I am looking my account online and I cant find the routing and account number. I called them she said look under statements. I am looking but nothing was there since it was a new account. Then she said send us a secure message, because for some reason she cant give me this info on the phone… The next day I am calling them again and after 15 min on the phone she sends me back a secure message with the account number and the routing number.
Then I had to verify the account with test deposits from chase. Another day passes by the test deposits are there. Then I am trying to send the 10k and Chase suspends my account due to unusual activity. So finally today on the third day success. Sent the 10k and hopefully will get there by the last day of the promotion. So this is my first time doing this I had no idea it so much time consuming. If someone thinks all can be done in one day have my experience on mind…
Another thing… I accidentally signed for the prestige account. On the phone I asked if it can be downgraded to the regular everyday checking account and she told that I have to receive my welcome package first before I can make such changes to the account..

    • Jags says:

They probably have the worst phone customer service reps I’ve ever encountered. I got locked out of my online account due to “fraud” concerns because the account is in my name only but I linked a joint account. I call every day to try to get it fixed but I get a different answer from each rep. Basically they want you to go in branch to fix any issue. It’s really annoying.

Just saw that people are finally getting approved online so applied for myself and DW. (didn’t do it initally as everyone was getting denied)

How sure are we that the money needs to hit by 10/31? The terms state within 60 days of account opening which would seem to indicate that as long as the account is open by the 31st you’re good.

(My application isn’t complete until I verify test deposits for the initial funding so hope that happens by 31st but otherwise I’m in)

    • GM says:

The rep I spoke to in branch said the 10k needs to be done by 10/31 but DD can be within 60 days of opening the account.

      • SamSimon says:

GM, I don’t want to sound smartass, usually reps and even managers have no clue what they are talking about…. double, or even triple check. Dave, call the bank and make sure you will speak with right people within RIGHT DEPARTMENT who knows the promotions and terms for them!

        • GM says:

Fair point. Chasing down someone from the “right” department is something I didn’t feel was necessary in my case. And unless someone is willing to put something on paper, it’s all hearsay and may not stand come bonus payout.

  96. Jack S says:

Even the Chase trial deposits triggered dd bonus!
    10/17 – Chase Trial Deposit (<$0.50 each)
    10/20 – $200 bonus
    10/26 – $10k Chase ACH (waiting for 90 days now…)

      • SP says:

I opened the account on 10/22 online, ACH push from WF, Discover, and CapOne on 10/26 and 10/27, no bonus yet, same for spouse, am I out of luck?

    • SP says:

Anyone who got $200 for DD can tell how did it post on Popular account? I made 5 DD from WF, and capitalOne 360 between 10/26 and 11/15 and no bonus. Here is how it is posted on popular website. Since this is not really DD, should I contact them?

  97. Milo says:

I did one transfer of 10k from Chase that was received on 10.31. the last day of the promo…So far nothing. Seems like almost every bonus was posted around 11-12 of the month based on a lot of the comments. I will wait until the end of this week and see if I will get the 200$ if not will make another deposit next week.

    • Tom says:

Did you receive your bonus? I opened the account on 10/31 and ACH from Barclays on 11/3 and no bonus.

    • SP says:

Anyone who got $200 for DD can tell how did it post on Popular account? I made 5 DD from WF, and capitalOne 360 between 10/26 and 11/15 and no bonus. Here is how it is posted on popular website. Since this is not really DD, should I contact them?

  98. Ron says:

I applied online on 10/31/2017, the application went through and I got the confirmation number. Trial deposit another 2 days. Will I be eligible for the bonuses given that Popular didn’t extend the offer beyond 10/31? which date do they consider – application date or the account has to be fully open by their cut off date.

    • Tom says:

From what I’ve been told, the account needs to be officially opened by 10/31/17. For accounts opened online, “officially opened” means once the trial deposits have been verified.

  99. Chris says:

    Deposited 10k on August 18
    Withdrew it on October 16
Money was held for 62 days.

300 was promised 90 days from the deposit date, which was officially today 11/15. Customer service has no answers. Says they have to “fill out a ticket with the department who handles bonuses” and get back to me in 7-10 business days. Unacceptable. You’re a bank. If I’m a minute late on my credit card there are penalties and interest.

In 2+ years of churning, I’ve never had a bank late on a promised bonus. I know they assign in batches but has anyone set their 300 yet?

    • Nicetoshare says:

08/31/2017 – opened account at Branch and deposited $10,000. Fund has a 30 days hold.
10/08/17 two trial deposit ACH from Chase
      10/11/17 $200 bonus posted.

      NO $300 bonus as well.

Most people received their bonus in October. Anyone see bonus posted in November?

      • Tom says:

I did the DD on 11/3 and still haven’t received the $200 bonus yet. Still a while to go on the 60 days for $10k deposit. Hopefully, they’ll review all the qualified accounts and provide the bonuses by end of the month.

    • Rick says:

      8/9/17-Opened account
      8/15/17-Deposited $10,000 by ACH
      10/19/17-Withdrew $9,000 by ACH

I received my $200 bonus on 10/13/17 but it’s now over 90 days since my $10K deposit and I still have not received the $300 bonus. I agree with you that this is unacceptable. Spoke with their telephone CSR today. CSR said that I qualified for the bonus and she sent email to the department that handles bonuses and said that there should be a response posted in my notes within 48 hours – I have to call again to get information on their response. I told her to put in the email that if I didn’t receive my bonus very shortly then I was going to file a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau – hopefully that will get their attention. If I don’t get the bonus by next Tuesday I’m going to proceed with the CFPB complaint.

  100. Kris says:

I haven’t seen $300 posted into my account. But, I received $200 bonus last month. Opened my account 1st week of August and deposited $10k by 24th August. It has been more than 2 1/2 months and I am also waiting for $300 bonus!!

  101. TatyG says:

Just received my $300 bonus. Opened my account on 8/14.

  102. Steve says:

Significant other and I opened two accounts on the same day (8/8), funded 10k and set up “DD” same day (8/14), received the $200 bonus same day, but now one received the $300 bonus (11/17) and the other hasn’t. No calls, messages, branch visits, etc. concerning the $300 for either of us. Curious to see if the other $300 posts Monday…

    • NICETOSHARE says:

      Same here.

Spouse and I opened account on 08/31/17. Both keep $10,000 in account till now.

11/17/17 $300.00 bonus posted on spouse account. Will pull money out on Monday.

NO BONUS for my account yet.

No call or visit to local branches about bonus.

      • Kris says:

Both me and spouse opened the account on same day. My spouse received $200 + $300(11/17) but I have received only $200 and not $300!!!

I withdrew $10k from both my and my spouse accounts two weeks back after finding out that you need to keep $10k only for 60 days and not more than that.

Are they looking into adding a new condition only one $300 bonus per household?? Anyone noticed about this anywhere in their terms and conditions???

        • Nicetoshare says:

Here is their term and conditions.

      • Steve says:

The $300 bonus posted to my account on 12/1. Not sure what would have caused the delay on one account and not the other, that seems pretty bizarre. Anyway, all settled now! Hope yours has posted as well.

  103. HarryTheFirstHarry says:

62 days in all including start (ACH deposit to make 10K posted on this day) and end day (ACH pull from external posted this day). I had planned to leave money in there for longer, but the Discover triple bonus required me to move this out at the 62 day mark.
    Bonus posted today.
Thanks Doc. If this be the golden age of bank bonuses today is certainly a festival of the bonus age with more than a few bonuses posting.

  104. titiex says:

Opened 10/31 and funded the 10K during opening though it didnt post till 11/1 so not sure if i’ll get that bonus. Have been ACHing from Chase, Discover, paypal and topcashback and still no DD bonus

    • Tom says:

I opened my account online on 10/31 as well. ACH from Barclays and CapOne on 11/6 and haven’t received the DD bonus either. I didn’t hit the 10k required for the $300 until 11/15. I had SM’ed them asking whether the 10k needed to be posted to the account by 10/31 to qualify for the $300 and the rep replied “No, you only need to have your account officially opened by 10/31.” At this point I’ll wait the 90 days and see what happens. If I get the bonus before then, great. I’ll keep you posted. Let me know if you get the bonus.

    • Milo says:

Mine 10k posted on October 31st but still nothing. Did another transfer of 100$ after the 10k and still nothing. I dont know…If I call them they to ask them they will see it is not real DD so I guess we have to just wait…

  105. Phil says:

After 60-75 days of the $10K deposit, I recommend sending a secure message on their website asking about the status of the bonus. I sent a message and was told I was eligible for the bonus and that my account would be reviewed by the promotions department. I was credited the $300 bonus a few days later.

Of course, do not contact them unless you are eligible and more than 60 days have passed..

  106. Dave says:

Can you post that SM stating that the money does not need to be deposited by 10/31?

    • Tom says:

      Dear Customer,

Thank you for your recent inquiry and for visiting

I do apologize for the delay.

Unfortunately, only the department in charge of the promotions can evaluate the accounts to see if they have successfully met the requirements.

Your account will be reviewed by the corresponding department.

The bonus will be disbursed according to the terms and conditions stated in the promotion. To qualify, the account needed to be officially opened between 07/10/2017 and 10/31/2017. Take into consideration that Online Accounts are considered officially opened once you verify the test deposits.

For the $300.00 cash bonus, the $10,000.00 deposit of new money needed to be deposited and maintained in the account within 60 days of account opening. As long as the account was opened during the promotional period, the date to be taken into consideration will be the one in which the deposit was made. The $300.00 will be credited to your account (if all requirements were met) 90 days from the day you deposited the $10,000.00 in new money.

  107. SamSimon says:

    Very strange bank:
One account past 80 days for $300 no bonus. $200 bonus got long time ago after few days of “fake” Chase DD.
Another account past 40 days with Real Direct Deposit from employer – and no bonus.
Some people got very fast, some don’t get at all.
they try to trick people – like MAYBE CUSTOMER forget and will not bother, so the bank will keep the bonus!!! I don’t like when they do so!

  108. Andrew says:

$300 bonus finally posted today 12/2. I deposited the 10K on 9/18. I called a few days ago and was told that the bank has 30 days to deposit the bonus after you meet the 60 day requirement (so the total of 90). Not sure if the call triggered the bonus.

  109. SamSimon says:

    09/15/2017 – 10K
    11/27/2017 – withdrew $5,000 (after more than 60 days)
    12/02/2017 – $300

I don’t like their website at all, not user friendly interface!

  110. Kris Sam says:

At last, I got $300 bonus posted after sending message and making a phone call 10 days back. They deposited bonus almost after 100 days for me now!!!

  111. NICETOSHARE says:

NO $300 bonus for me yet. $10,000 was funded to my account on 08/31/2017 and fund is still there now.

I followed one post’s suggestion and sent a confidential email via online bank on 11/30/2017. The reply email was automatically generated and no direct answer to my bonus question.

Decide to give them a ring today and was put me on hold for 10 minutes while CSR drafting an internal email to the responsible department for bonus evaluation. I was advise to call back on Wednesday for an answer.

It’s ridiculous to have customers chasing for bonus. STRESSFUL and UNACCEPTABLE.

The only upside of Popular Community bank is their ACH push happens instantaneously. Fund delivers to external bank on next business day. Capital One Bank needs 5 days to deliver fund and 5-7 business days for Capital 360.

  112. FL370 says:

Has anyone had a problem with the $200 bonus? I have done 3 real dd and one fake from Chase. I opened account mid october?

  113. SamSimon says:

NYC area! My girlfriend’s account No bonus for 2 months! 3 Real DD. She messaged them and asked if bonus attached to her account!

“Unfortunately, only the department in charge of the promotions can evaluate the accounts to see if they have successfully met the requirements.

Your account will be reviewed by the corresponding department.

Keep in mind the $200 bonus will be deposited in the account within 90 days of account opening, if the checking account is in good standing, a direct deposit has been received in the account within 60 days and all requirements are met.”

    • nicetoshare says:

Popular Community Bank might be overwhelmed by the $500 bonus promotion responses and try to stop fulfilling their bonus obligation now.

Has officially passed the 100 days mark from date of my $10,000 deposit. The responsible dept. is still “investigating” reason the causes the bonus delay.
