[Expired]Stop & Shop: $20 Off Next Order When You Purchase $100 In Third Party Gift Cards (11/10-11/30)

This offer has expired, sign up for instant notifications to avoid missing any deals in the future.

[Reposting since it’s now live. Hopefully this deal is stackable with the other gift card deals until November 13th, as noted in the post. Let us know your experiences.]

The Offer

  • Earn $20 off your next shop with any $100 gift card purchase

This offer is showing for Stopandshop. Looks like Giant might be running a 5x fuel points deal instead. Check your local store to see what their deal is.

The Fine Print

  • Valid until November 10th until November 30th
  • Coupon expires 12/7/17
  • Stop and Shop gift cards/American Express/ Mastercard & Visa cards are all excuded
  • Coupon will automatically print
  • One offer per transaction
  • Coupon cannot be used towards the purchase of a gift card

Our Verdict

Make sure you use a credit card that earns at a high rate on grocery store purchases. Reselling some of the gift cards would be profitable if you value the $20 off at face value. Shame that VGC & MGC are excluded but $20 off would have been too good to be true on those.

Especially interesting here is that there’s also a dozen gift card deals going on through November 13th. Ideally, the deal will go like this: buy $100 in Best Buy (example) gift cards along with $20 in groceries and pay just $100. On the receipt you’ll get a $20 voucher for free groceries. If this works properly, you’ll end up with $40 in free groceries with $100 gift card.

Amazon included? That’s as good as cash to some people I know.

amazon is indeed included. just bought a few from 3 different S & S locations near me.

Can this be combined with the $10 in free groceries with digital coupon that is currently going on in stop and shop? What if you buy $50 staples and $50 macys or kohls can you get $20 in groceries with purchase and then receive a coupon for another $20 in groceries?

Chuck

Hopefully it’ll work. Added to the post.

I can see it working well with a single $100 gift card for best buy. How about 2 x $50 gift cards (macys and kohls lets say) in a single transaction. Do you get the $10 + $10 and then a coupon for an additional $20 off your next purchase of groceries?

Audrey
Audrey

No, they have to be separate transactions. At least it says they can’t be combined with “like” offers.

I can confirm that it works

Are these the coupons that print with your receipt when you check out in store?

Any one know if the coupons can be combined when using them to purchase groceries?

How margin do these stores have on these cards?

20% seems huge. Or is it a loss leader?

I asked a store manager on how they make money on these gas deals and these $$ off deals. He said in short the GC company pays for it. I didn’t ask further on the details.

Its not that you are getting 20% off the GC. You are getting “store cash”. The store sells most things at a steep steep markup. Usually to redeem the 20 people would buy $30 in goods (as well as come back for a future shopping to their store versus others) which should be sufficient to cover their costs plus some profit also. And this is assuming the GC company plays no part in this which as pointed out below may not be the case.
I used to shop at S&S some time back and then when I got into couponing both at S&S as well as other stores, I realized the levels of markup that these stores sell at.
Of course couponers and thinking shoppers are not the majority nor the target of such promos though we do make best use of them, I think we would be a small minority.

Actually the grocery business has incredibly low profit margins. On $30 of groceries the company would make about $1.50 pretax

Tim — that indeed has been received wisdom for generations….. and yet, somehow, with the advent of the German invasion 🙂 (Lidyl, Adil), we now have a massive grocery price war going on…. (with walmart belately now joining in…. ) Then too there’s the race to “free pick up”…. I was at a WMT last week that had 10 bays — in a sonic drive up format — incredibly efficient (and they gave me TWO ten $ coupons on one 50 purchase)

Perhaps the old saw about profit margins being 5% or less…. may have been good ole Kroger/Wharton collusion // marketing ploy. (as Kroger became the nation’s largest chain — now, they’re in danger of going the way of Acme, A&P, etc.) All fascinating.

I have proof that that is not the case. Because the same groceries (not all of them, bust most) sold by S&S cost 30 to 50% less at a competing retailer just a mile down the road. That is counting the regular sale at the other retailer but not any manufacturer and store coupons. I am sure the other retailer is not selling their groceries at a loss even when on sale.
Even at S&S we see occasionally sales these days on account of competition where items are 50% off regular price for perishables like dairy and meat as well as snacks.
So you actually need to get out there and do some couponing and grocery shopping than sit around and read articles on the web to find out what the grocery margins are like. You would then go “OMG! What have I been paying all these years!”.

Giant looks to be 5x gas points on all gift cards: http://forthemommas.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Giant-ad-11-10.pdf

AFAIK, Giant Food Stores doesn’t do the Stop & Shop post purchase coupon thing.

It sucks that Giant’s offer is so inferior vs Stop & Shop, as Giant is my go-to supermarket. You get $0.50 off a gallon of gas for $100 GC purchase, which to me equates to about $6.50 in gas savings at most – a third of what S&S offers…darn…

I can confirm my local Giant ad at giantfoodstores.com starting 11/10/2017 shows the 5x points offer and not the Stop & Shop $20 coupon offer. This is Philadelphia, PA suburbs area.

The November 13th stackable offer is not working at Stop & Shop near Boston.

My Stop and shop has 5x on fuel 🙁

Martin’s (like Giant) is also doing the 5x gas points on “participating” gift cards. (all of them ? – except for visa, mc, & giant/martin gc’s) https://martinsfoods.com/coupons-weekly-circular/weekly-circular/?store_code=6285 p. 7 Deal good until Nov. 30th.

This has potential…. 😉 esp. for those of us who also can get our gas at Martin’s. For example, buying say $400 of Amazon gc’s (if they have them?) will translate @ 5x into 2,000 points — or $2.00 off per gallon, up to 25 gallons of gas in one fillup. (e.g. worth $50)

And as Dima above noted, Amazon gc’s can be about as good as cash…. (with some work)

The S&S for Rhode Island is 5x gas on g/c offers starting tomorrow.
That figures tho, since we never get the good deals out of them.

I don’t see Amazon there. I see X Box, Bass Pro Shop, Cracker Barrel, Best Buy, Dominos, Lowes, Ruby Tuesday, Express Locker and some others that I cannot make out due to blurriness.

If anyone can figure out what the other merchants are, would really appreciate that. Thank

fyi, I found an amazon listing of merchants that ostensibly sell Amazon gift cards: (an asurdly long link) Of note, most major grocers are on the list, but Giant & Stop&Shop are not…. There’s a Martin’s on the list, but do not know if it refers to Martin’s in Indiana or Mid-Atlantic. YMMV. (ps, as for finding a list of what your fav. grocer carries, that even more is YMMV.)
