[Expired] Now Live: 10% Off Target Gift Cards Online and In-Store

This deal has expired, never miss another deal again by signing up for notifications.

[Reposting 12/3. Deal is supposed to go live 2 am CST.]

The Offer

Direct Link to offer (contains our affiliate link)

Target’s annual gift card sale will return this year on this coming Sunday, December 3.

  • On December 3, Target stores and Target.com will offer a 10% instant discount on Target gift cards

You can buy these in any denomination(s) you choose, just be aware that the discount is only on up to $300 worth. Also, the cards won’t be active for use until Monday morning.

The Fine Print

  • Deal valid December 3, 2017 only.
  • Max $300 in Target gift card purchases ($30 max discount) per household. Minimum $10 gift card purchase required to get the discount.
  • Limit 1 transaction of up to $300 online at target.com.
  • Gift cards purchased on December 3 will not be valid for use on December 3. Starting December 4 at 10 am CST, they’ll begin working. Card have no expiration (like all regular Target gift cards).

Our Verdict

Personally, I’ve been saving my Discover $1,500 Q4 category for this deal. Since the Amazon and Target category is covered at 5% with the REDcard and Amazon credit card, this Target gift card deal is the best way to make use of the category bonus. Instead of using a regular card which earns 2-3%, I’ll use Discover for some extra rewards. Never pay for a Target gift card with the REDcard since no rewards are earned on that. Instead use an everyday card or use Discover if you haven’t maxed out the quarter already. Some Visa/Mastercards code Target as a grocery which could mean bonus points too.

This is quite a good deal since Target gift cards are hard to come by at a decent discount. If we’ll assume you typically get 5% off at Target using REDcard, stock up on gift cards this Sunday to lock in the 10% discount + credit card points. It’s great that they make this deal available online too. This will also stack well with the 20%-off coupons if you got  in on that: shop from December 4 – 10, you can use the coupon and the gift card.

Depending on your reselling connections, you might be able to find a buyer for Target gift cards at 90%+ making it an easy way to earn some free credit card rewards and maybe a small profit to boot. Also, it seems that you can convert Target gift cards to most third-party gift cards in-store so if you see a brand you’ll use (e.g. eBay, Disney, gas, etc.) come back and redeem the cards for those. Note, you can convert online and you can’t convert to Visa/MC/Amex or iTunes cards.

I’d advise against trying to roll gift cards with Target to lock in the discount. Buy these with a credit card.

Is this a mail in rebate or how do they limit it to $300 per household? Can you do $300 in person and $300 online?

Don’t forget, you can use a gift card to buy these gift cards!

Didn’t they kill the Target GC to 3rd party GC this summer? Please update/clarify if this has changed (i.e. where the comments correct/confirmed?).

This deal was better back when you could pay 99% of a purchase with gift cards and the rest with your REDcard and still get 5% off the entire amount. Still a decent opportunity though.

I remember when you just had to be a REDcard member. Didn’t even have to use the card.

How?

What happens if you buy a product in store using a Target GC, then later decide to return the product for a refund:

Do they give you…
– … a new Target GC for the purchase amount?
– … hand you the amount back in cash?
– … just offer you store credit to select another product?

J
J

Follow-Up:

Does the answer above change if I lets say buy a $200 product and pay with a $100 Target GC and the remaining $100 with my credit card?

Brent

They refund both payments $100 gift and $100 cc. If only 1 item returned it would be 50/50 since that was how payment was done. Just dealt with online

At my Target, they always try to give back the gift card amount first if you’re not returning an entire order. I have to argue every time to try and get the refund applied to the credit card first. Sometimes they can do it; sometimes not.

While I’d probably end up using the gift card eventually, it seems dishonest to do it this way, and it’s definitely not in line with their own terms.

+1. Maggie is spot on. I have NEVER seen any other retailer refund to giftcards first.

Generally, as pretty much any place I dealt with in the past, you are refunded to the original payment method. At my local Target, I’ve received cash for returns < $10 — which coincidentally or not is also the threshold at which GC can be cashed out at customers request in California.

Rene
Rene

To clarify: I did not ask for Cash, I just got it. In fact, I asked to get a GC instead, but they said they can only cash out for amounts < $10.

FWIW: if you return anything bought with these specific gift cards they will take 10% off the total amount refunded. The receipt I bought the discounted gift card on today says so.

Can I ask why iTunes gift cards are so important to some people?

Glenn

No you may not.

It’s also a great way to pay for content at a discount (Netflix, Hulu, iTunes movies/tv shows/music, iBooks, HBO Now, Showtime, Starz, etc.). Buying iTunes cards at a discount then loading them to your iTunes account means that you’re getting a discount on all the content services I just mentioned. I do this regularly and average about 20%.

I will definitely be combining that 20% off coupon and this deal! Nice!

Where is the coupon?

It was a Thanksgiving deal in the ad. Spend $50 at Target on Thanksgiving and receive a coupon for 20% off your entire purchase for a future shopping trip.

Any link to it?

I remembered that Target just cancelled the GCs last year when people tried to bypass the limit. The important part was they were NOT refunded. It’s surprising that no one has mentioned it yet.

How can they not refund you? That doesn’t seem legal.

Ender

Yes that was what happened. See the link below

MoreSun

They refunded. If you click the doc article and then click through to the Slickdeals post he cites and read the last couple pages of comments you’ll see people eventually got $270 refunds after back and forth and BBB involvement.

You mean to say that they kept people’s money and got away with it? I don’t think that’s possible but DP’s welcome

Ken
Ken

Yes. People had to lodge BBB complaints to get their funds back. Plenty of people haven’t gotten anything back. Google for Target GC rolling from last December/November.

all it says is that if you used a target gc to buy target gc, not when you buy multiple target gc’s using same cc. this is not at all related to household limit one condition

I use the discounted Target gift cards at the in store CVS pharmacy. The Red card 5% discount does not apply at in store CVS pharmacies. Various cards with rotating categories (Discover and Chase Freedom) have never resulted in a savings at Target in store CVS pharmacies as they don’t code up as a pharmacy. However in store pharmacies DO take Target gift cards. So this is a way to save 15% (Discover 5% and Target gift card 10% sale) on your prescriptions when there is no other way to save.

JASON
JASON

5% Discover is from the 90% which is what you pay, so total saving = 10% + 90%x5%=14.5%

So, I think it is better to go the store to purchase the physical target gift card using discover credit card.
Is discover credit card 5% working in target store or online only?
