[Reposting 12/3. Deal is supposed to go live 2 am CST.]

The Offer

Direct Link to offer (contains our affiliate link)

Target’s annual gift card sale will return this year on this coming Sunday, December 3.

  • On December 3, Target stores and Target.com will offer a 10% instant discount on Target gift cards

You can buy these in any denomination(s) you choose, just be aware that the discount is only on up to $300 worth. Also, the cards won’t be active for use until Monday morning.

The Fine Print

  • Deal valid December 3, 2017 only.
  • Max $300 in Target gift card purchases ($30 max discount) per household. Minimum $10 gift card purchase required to get the discount.
  • Limit 1 transaction of up to $300 online at target.com.
  • Gift cards purchased on December 3 will not be valid for use on December 3. Starting December 4 at 10 am CST, they’ll begin working. Card have no expiration (like all regular Target gift cards).

Our Verdict

Personally, I’ve been saving my Discover $1,500 Q4 category for this deal. Since the Amazon and Target category is covered at 5% with the REDcard and Amazon credit card, this Target gift card deal is the best way to make use of the category bonus. Instead of using a regular card which earns 2-3%, I’ll use Discover for some extra rewards. Never pay for a Target gift card with the REDcard since no rewards are earned on that. Instead use an everyday card or use Discover if you haven’t maxed out the quarter already. Some Visa/Mastercards code Target as a grocery which could mean bonus points too.

This is quite a good deal since Target gift cards are hard to come by at a decent discount. If we’ll assume you typically get 5% off at Target using REDcard, stock up on gift cards this Sunday to lock in the 10% discount + credit card points. It’s great that they make this deal available online too. This will also stack well with the 20%-off coupons if you got  in on that: shop from December 4 – 10, you can use the coupon and the gift card.

Depending on your reselling connections, you might be able to find a buyer for Target gift cards at 90%+ making it an easy way to earn some free credit card rewards and maybe a small profit to boot. Also, it seems that you can convert Target gift cards to most third-party gift cards in-store so if you see a brand you’ll use (e.g. eBay, Disney, gas, etc.) come back and redeem the cards for those. Note, you can convert online and you can’t convert to Visa/MC/Amex or iTunes cards.

I’d advise against trying to roll gift cards with Target to lock in the discount. Buy these with a credit card.

I purchased a $300 Target physical GC with my Discover (including utilizing a negative credit balance I had from merchandise returns); and got a confirmation from Target that the card had “shipped”. The website still says “shipped” with an arrival date.

However, Discover, which used to have a record of the charge under “pending”, now no longer has a “pending” record, and also never moved the charge to the “posted” category either.

… So, what do you think might be on the end of the “shipped” Target order claim? Confetti? An empty Bullseye box? Am I getting a $300 card for free (unlikely I know)?

Clearly Target’s back-end system lies worse than the “Domino’s Pizza Tracker”, so caveat emptor. I barely use the Discover Card, often don’t remember to sign up for cashback quarters; and don’t seem likely to have been flagged out as some type of desperate MS’er on DC’s end.

DP: I was able to purchase three $100 gift cards in-store today with the Target e-GiftCard I bought on Target.com yesterday. I even got 5¢ back as a discount — Not sure if the Delta gift card triggered it or the fact that I said I brought one bag of my own at self-checkout (reusable bag discounts are very rare in my state). Either way, I’ll take savings where I can! 😁

How long until the email card arrives? I bought one around 9pm Eastern last night and emailed it to myself and I still don’t have it.

Also check if you have any Discover card bonuses. I received a mailer from Discover offering to match All Cashback Bonuses I’ve earned until June 2018.

I was able to buy a Target GC at Kroger’s using the 4x fuel promotion and then I went to a local Target and purchased their GC’s with 10% discount at self checkout.
Kroger’s highest increment on MC/V was only $100 and my stack-able coupon would have only given me one $5 off.

When I used 3×100$ TargetGC with 20% coupon at self checkout it reduced only the non giftcard amount of the purchase. Not even 10% was shown so I removed all GC and will try online instead.

Well the primary reason I bought the GC was to use it with the 20% coupon. So if they are blocking the GC amount from the total calculation, that will really stink. All further data points on this will certainly need to be monitored….. Looking at the Terms of the coupon, it states: “Gift Cards and tax not included in determining purchase total”. My initial interpretation was that any purchased gift cards would not count. But gift cards are specifically listed in the separate exclusion list of purchases. So it just may be that using a GC for payment will indeed exclude that amount from the 20% discount calculation. I hope not, but doesn’t bode well……

Have to clarify: I tried using the 20% coupon when buying the TGC. That’s been the mistake I did. The order in which things were supposed to be done I guess was first buying TGC with Discover then the following day paying using the TGC for the 20% which I will try then.

Thanks for clarifying. We used the 20% off coupon on over $380 of spending. Paid with $300 discounted GC and the $50 GC purchased to get the coupon. Saved in excess of $117 and still have over $80 on a GC for future use. The math may seem wrong, but we did many GC offers while purchasing and earned another $25 in GCs along with Discover cashback. So this turned out to be a really nice deal for us.

Was able to easily get 3×300 with self checkout at store. Apparently the cards are not active right away. They said to wait 24 hrs.

i wonder if target will start to keep track of people who game the limits via in-store purchases. technically its possible to code the GC as a “promo” load and prevent multiple promo GC to be used on a single purchase later, but cant imagine target doing that.
