[Targeted?] Chase Freedom Unlimited: Get 5x Points On Paypal Spend, Up To $1,500 (3/1-5/31)

The Offer

Check for all Chase spend offers at chase.com/mybonus

  • Chase is offering some Freedom Unlimited cardholders a bonus 5% Cash Back rewards total for each $1 spent using PayPal on up to $1,500 in total combined purchases from 3/1/2025 to 05/31/2025. Requires activation first.

Our Verdict

Paypal is always a nice spend category since it works almost anywhere, and can even be used to pay your federal income taxes. It seems this offer is only showing for some Freedom Unlimited cardholders, not other cards. Check the link above to see if you were targeted or look out for the email which went out (“Activate now: <your name>, earn 5% cash back with PayPal”)

Offer finally showed up in the “Just For You” section after logging in. Maybe slow roll. Enrolled CIU and valid as stated in post. Also appear when checking credit score section Chase Credit Journey/Marketplace, YMMV.

I noticed when using PayPal on eBay it is coded to Chase as “eBay/PayPal” whereas other PayPal purchases are coded as “PayPal/<merchant_name>”. Has anyone else noticed this? I’m concerned I won’t get the 5% back for these eBay purchases.

Used it at a restaurant that takes paypal. Received the 1.5% base, 3.5% for paypal AND 1.5% dining bonus, so 6.5% total.

Assume would be the same for drug store purchases?

Can we use to pay taxes? Do we get 5% cash back on taxes for Federal and State?

I use the quarterly 5% when offered to pay taxes without a problem. PayPal isn’t available for my State taxes though.

I verified on the MA state taxes website and it allows PayPal now. I do not believe it was an option in previous years.

Went and checked for IL but still no go on PayPal. Glad it’s an option for you. Appreciate the follow up.

You can use PayPal in store at CVS and Star Market grocery store. I think I was able to use at Walmart through the app. Where else can we use PayPal in store in person?

The app has a map feature where you can view nearby participating stores. Safeway is another one.

Yes. CVS you can pay with QR code. I was having some technical issue with the scan code but the cashier was able to scan my QR code. You may need to increase the phone screen brightness. I also needed to disable use PayPal balance. I was able to successfully pay in CVS after I disabled PayPal balance in PayPal app.

You use the store app and have PayPal as the default payment option. For example, CVS you can use PayPal app to pay in person. Use Pay In Store when you open the PayPal app.Tap QR code in upper left corner. Use Show to Pay. Caveat Emptor! Turn OFF use PayPal balance because if it is on then you can pay in the store in person. Click CFU as our default payment option. You may need to delete you other credit cards and bank account because PayPal does not respect your default payment choice. I ran into issues using PayPal app at CVS until I disabled use PayPal balance.

“Paypal does not respect your default payment choice” is an understatement. I learned the hard way 😭

If people aren’t aware, there are different default payment options for online payments and in-store (qr) payments.
