Avoiding Fees

Monthly Fees

The CareFree account is eligible and this has no monthly fees to worry about.

Early Account Termination Fee

I wasn’t able to find a fee schedule so I’m unsure if there is any early account termination fee or not.

Our Verdict

Very rare to see a bonus this big, even rarer to see a bonus this big with no direct deposit requirement. The downside is that you have to open in branch and only one branch is eligible. If you live somewhat near this branch then it’s worth doing, even if you don’t live close then it might be worth a bit of travel to do. We’ve added this to our regional specific best bank account bonuses.

Nice, thank you DoC, might take a trip out to Worcester this wknd.

Thanks. I happen to live not far from Worcester and used to live there for 5 years. Anyone else interested in a western Mass group?

I am

Palmer resident here. Defintely.

Yep, I’m interested.

Email me at and I will invite you guys to a slack group. Alternatively you may suggest other platform to do this.

Live in Framingham. Easy for me. Sent you an email for the western mass group.

Lived in Amherst for 5 years – moved to Boston just last year!

Yes, 413!

very interested if anyone from outside worcester and particularly outside MA has any luck. I drive through worcester occasionally, so if I see positive data indications here, I will give it a try

I’ll try to open an account this Saturday. I’m a 30 or so minute drive, I doubt that will be a problem. I’m not big on bank account churning, but this one is too easy to miss. Thanks DoC.

This seems too good to be true. There must be a catch to this. I am reasonably close to Worcester so I am definitely considering making the drive. If anyone has any additional detail, it would be appreciated.

Does the banker get the chex report immediately if it is a hard pull? I have too many inquires, and wonder if the banker might ask uncomfortable questions face to face?? I haven’t applied in branch ever, except for my first ever bank account.

What counts as a debit card transaction? If I have to make 36 ATM withdrawals from a non-fidelity bank, since I live about an hour from Worcester, that’s a lot of fees that will reduce the value of the bonus. I suppose I could make a 36 very small purchases with it, but that’s a significant time suck as well (adding an extra transaction to all of my normal purchases, i.e. asking the cashier to place one small item on the debit card and the rest on my usual cc).

Why wouldn’t you just do $0.50 Amazon reloads for the transactions?

ATM withdrawals rarely count for these

Usually any pin based activity counts as debit.

Do we know how this was discovered? Is there a sign in the window? Was there a mailer? I’m just wondering if you go in there how you are supposed to explain you found out about this.

It is on their website, clear as day. You could even visit their website yourself and follow the link regarding their new branch opening, then click on to learn about their special. Did you happen to read the article?

I did but I didn’t see a link earlier or I’d not have asked the question. But yes I see it on their site now.

Haha, I am concerned about that as well! I guess it would be pretty funny for them to suddenly see people from all over New England flocking to open new accounts with them!

i would make the drive (5hrs away) and make a vacation out of it – if i thought they would welcome a New Yorker. Can someone ask if its limited to a location? Thanks

Probably branch-specific, looks a like a grand opening offer

I emailed them on Sunday and was told that they only offer accounts to MA residents.

Would going to college in MA count?

hmmm can you use a friend’s address?

Does providing Hotel Address still work for these types of churning? I’m just staying there for 3 days… Museum churning too.

Great deal for us, but I am really not sure how the bank can offer $500 to pretty much anyone with such easy requirements.

Just a DP for opening the account: you do need a MA driver’s license and a SSN (SSN for work only will not be accepted). Good luck.

oh no- that make me eligible.. did you confirm this SSN requirement in person?

Via phone with their branch manager.

That’s sad. They should’ve at least taken CT and NH residents considering both states are literally under 50 miles from Worcester.

I get requiring a MA address and SSN, but are you sure they require a MA driver’s license. It would be possible to be a Worcester resident without having a MA driver’s license and youre telling me they would deny you?

They asked for MA license and it’s the primary ID for verifying your address.

>SSN for work only will not be accepted

What do you mean by this? A SSN for work only is a true SSN. Are you comparing with an ITIN? Do they ask to see your social security card?

You need an unrestricted SSN, which is given to U.S. citizens and permanent residents. Yes, they asked to see my SSN card.

I have a valid MA state issued ID card, but no driver’s license. Want to make the trip tomorrow but won’t if they can’t approve me with that. Any thoughts?

I was also told that this is for Mass residents only (:

in person or did you call the branch? any validation to the data point above about requiring a MA driver’s license? that requirement seems overly strict to me (ie. they accept someone living out on the cape, but not someone living in worcester with an out of state driver’s license)

Data point: No hard pull; ChexSystems sign in the office, super easy to apply. They also have a 3% interest savings account promotion from now until April 2019. The savings account is also fee free.

Chex sensitive? How many chex hits do you have recently?

Only about 3 this year

Oh, and forgot to mention there is no credit card funding either

Did you had to show ssn?

They want your SS# and license as with opening any account yes. They also require a second ID like a credit card or it can be a passport or SS card.

Yes, and second form of ID like Peek mentioned. I used a credit card.

Hmm, I guess it varies? I just wrote ssn on a piece of paper and showed him my driver’s license. No second ID was required.

Same, no second ID.
