Wyndham: Transfer Points To United & Get Double Miles (5:2)

The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • Wyndham is currently offering double the amount of miles when you transfer Wyndham points to United miles. The standard transfer rate is 5 Wyndham points to 1 United mile. Under this promotion it will be 5 Wyndham points to 2 United miles.

The Fine Print

  • Valid through August 31, 2020

Our Verdict

How useful this deal is will really depend on how you value Wyndham points and United miles. Personally I’d prefer the points but that will vary from person to person.

When I follow the above link to the direct offer and click on Terms and Conditions, it brings the terms up in a language other than English.. maybe it’s French?? Odd.

Wyndham is the last remaining hotel program to have a “hard” expiration* at 4 years (not be confused with their separate “soft” expiration, meaning resettable through “activity”, at 18 months). If you have points that are soon going to “hard” expire, and you have no hotel redemption plans in the near future, transferring to no-expiration United may not be so bad.

*The only way to reset “hard” expiration at Wyndham is to transfer out and back in, which at present is only possible with Caesar’s TotalRewards up to I think 30k a year.

wow, thanks for the alert on this….. I’d always thought if I used the WR legacy card every 18 months, I’d be ok….. but apparently not! Wow. Have 150K or so Wyndham Rewards points. Have used a lot over the years, (esp. out west around national parks) but accumulated still more. Had no idea if any of them are approaching the expiration dates…. Checked my accounts, and there is no obvious indication of how old the WR points are. (activity screens only go back 18 months….)

Edit: Did check and re-check, and saw a rather hidden, small print heading for “notifications” on the lower left side of my account activity page. (after scrolling down!) Sure enough, there’s a notification that 6+k of my points will expire end of next month. Could be worse, of course. Had no idea this was coming, til your comment SDsearch. (Is there any way to see/know if any of other polnts will perish soon, what the expiration dates are/will be?)

What a really insidious way to infuriate longtime Wyndham members. (though perhaps not as bad as the unexplained crap Radisson is pulling of late — with the inescapable 50% premium put on all reward reservations there….. with bloggers largely mum on the matter. Check it out DoC.)

I know of no way to see what other expirations will be without taking other action. But IF, because 6+k of your points will expire end of next month, you decide to transfer at least that much to an airline (or you decide to transfer up to 30k to Caesar’s TotalRewards, with a plan to transfer them back, to reset their expiration to 4 years), then after you do a transfer of at least as many points as they now say are expiring next month, that will update the indication you saw to tell you when your next batch of points will expire and what that expiration is.

Not a bad option for those of us with too low a balance of WR to do anything with.

I was thinking the same, but I have 5,275 points and the transfer minimum is 6,000. Womp womp.
