Update 1/23/21: After a lot of negative backlash, Xbox has reversed this decision and pricing will remain the same. I guess this was one way to sell a lot at the current pricing.
Xbox has announced that Xbox Live Gold pricing will be increasing, existing members will renew at their current price. New pricing will be as follows:
- 1-month for $10.99
- 3-months for $29.99
- 6-months for $59.99 (previously $59.99 for 12 months)
The cheapest way to get Xbox Live membership is the past has been through CD Keys and using the Brazilian account work around. Unfortunately there is no good deal there currently. Some retailers are still showing the old pricing, e.g:
- Costco: Two years for $95
- Amazon: One year for $59.99 (our affiliate link)
- Target: One year for $59.99
Might make sense to stock up if you’re a XBOX fan.
“Door in the face” sales technique. They’ll raise it only 50% soon, and people will be fine with it because “at least it wasn’t doubled.”
I think their PR department was having flashbacks over the DRM fiasco in 2013, which resulted in huge, lasting damage for the brand.
It was the moment I walked away from Xbox, and I’m sure I’m not alone. Had I not already jumped ship, this would have done it too.
Lol the video PlayStation made to mock them was perfect
Yeah that was awesome. How easy it is to sell your console over the competitor when all you have to say is “we don’t make you do all the crap xbox requires”
They should not have abandoned the plan. About ten years ago, Netflix stock tanked when it doubled its price, and well, look how it turned out for them.

Netflix has a monopoly on tons of media. Microsoft does not. Microsoft is trying to convince you to buy their $500 console over their competition, while Netflix works on devices you already own.
I get what you’re saying, but these are totally different situations. They made the right call IMO.

Update: Microsoft has now reversed its decision on increasing the price of Xbox Live Gold memberships. Prices will remain at $9.99 for one month, $24.99 for three months, $39.99 for six months, and $59.99 for a 12-month membership. Also, probably the most surprising twist in this tale, free-to-play games will no longer require an Xbox Live Gold membership. Microsoft recently updated its Xbox Wire post with a new statement. You can read the full statement below.
@williamcharles Microsoft has already backed off. https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2021/01/22/update-on-xbox-live-gold-pricing/
Yup they reversed the policy https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2021/01/22/update-on-xbox-live-gold-pricing/
They just updated the linked press release to state they will no longer be increasing the cost of Xbox Live Gold. That was quick.
Dang that was fast. I wonder what they were expecting.
Costco no longer fulfilling or is out of the codes Just tried to order twice Few minutes later …. Sorry “order canceled “
Just bought 24 month card online from costco o_o still works for me
Time to finally build that PC I’ve been thinking about.
GPUs are nonexistent. Been getting easy MS lately by buying $700 cards and selling for $1200.
How are you buying them?
Nice! Yeah, unfortunately I know it’ll be a little bit down the road. My Xbox Live doesn’t run out until July, so I have some time to wait for things to be in stock. We’ll see.
Saw they reversed it though so I may keep the Xbox for now until I can easily get all the stuff I need for a build.
I would love to know how your doing this maybe email me if you don’t mind sounds great.
But if the GPUs are non-existent then how do you get the GPUs to MS?
“So outraged. Where can I leave a one-star Google review for Xbox Live?”
