Our Verdict
This is really an opportunity to jump on, in my opinion. I happily grabbed this card with a $100 bonus and haven’t regretted the card for a minute.
- 5x for a few weeks of the year
- Fee-free Amex card for Amex offers  (if you value that)
- Signup bonus
- Targeted spend offers which I’ll estimate to be worth one or two hundred dollars per year (here is a current example)
We don’t know that the 5% will last forever, but it doesn’t seem to be going away for now. And, in any case, you’ll have landed the $200 + a fee-free Amex card + targeted spend offers which I expect will continue.
Do this now! The next go-round on the 5x offer will be in February for All-Star weekend.

Deal looks dead. Website doesn’t mention it, and you need to apply In Branch.
Yeah, it’s dead https://www.doctorofcredit.com/bbva-compass-nba-card-adds-5000-limit-per-5-everywhere-period-2017-onwards/
Thanks for pointing out, I’ll update the post.
Just got approved for this card…nice $200 bonus (After I do the spend), and a nice card from a non-major US bank, with zero annual fee. Good for MS on certain dates I understand. I can keep this open indefinitely for Average Account age boost.
Now, if I can only get myself to open a Discover card for Average Account Age…alas no signup bonus, and I don’t use Applepay. Category bonus is nice, but not for a hard pull at the moment.
Does Discover stop sending mail to you if you have one of their cards! That alone might be reason to signup. Literally, I have received at least 20 adverts from Discover in the mail in the last 6 months probably.
If we ever cross paths DofC, I’ll buy you a few rounds, though I don’t drink myself.
non-major bank…Spanish bank with US operations
Hi Quasimodo, the discover card does have a sign up bonus of sorts, they offer double cash back for the first year. Could be worth signing up for if you can take advantage of the 5% categories.
Is anybody having trouble signing up for online access?
Yes, its cause your actually signing up in the wrong place.
Yes its dumb.
Call CS and ask them for the correct link.
It looks the same but isnt.
Let me guess account # doesnt exist??
Nope, it says to call some 1800 phone number for assistance and the office hours are currently closed.
You mean the signup site isn’t bbvacompass.com/nbaonline ?
As twisted as ut sounds, the rewards isnt the same.
Had to get the correct link from them.
It was no surprise though.
They are so antiquated.
I signed up for 3 cards for my family members and got that message on 1 out of 3. Not sure why and havn’t called.
Has the 20% off NBAstore benefit been removed? I didn’t see it in the mailer when I received my card and it doesn’t show up here either:
https://www.bbvacompass.com/nbacard/
After getting the card can I call and have my credit line decreased (to minimize risk against fraud)?
Will that lower the credit score ?
Seems pointless. You still have the same risk of fraud, the amount would just be less. But you wouldn’t be liable for the amount anyway, and the credit card fraud prevention would kick in before someone spent too much.
After several phone calls 23,000 points posted to both our accounts.
Finally.
Glad to hear you got the bonus posted correctly.
Thanks Will.
More money in my pocket thanks to you guys.
I have the same problem. Gotta start the phone calls today. /sigh
Ya it will happen dont worry.
They are aware of the glitch and will fix it.
Just call them.
Has anyone tried loading Serve online with these for the purposes of meeting the spending req? Did it work? Thanks!
should work
I tried after setting the cash advance limit to 0, did not work.
It worked. Did $1,000 for Jan for Serve (before Serve shut me down for past MS, uh activity). Left cash advance limit alone at $7,000. Posted as 5 x $200 purchases. Got bonus yesterday for 20,000 point bonus + points for spend.
Unless you are also banned from Serve and didn’t get or read the e-mail. Some people are claiming they didn’t get the shutdown e-mail but can no longer use their cards for loads. In other words, same result. Might want to call Amex to confirm.
The number of bonus points now got updated to 20.,000 from 10,000 automatically when I checked a few moments back. I never reported it to BBVA and was going to call them but they’ve already fixed it.
I wasn’t certain when I called in on friday about zeroing the CA limit as the rep didn’t had a way to do it. She was very good though and “placed” a note on my account for a supervisor to review. I just logged into my account today and can see that my CA limit is 0 now.
Keep trying until you get a rep thats willing to do what you want.
Has anyone tried to set-up electronic payments to this card via Serve? All my attempts were rejected as either the zip code or account number incorrect. However, I was able to set-up the “mail a check” option.
I’ve been successful loading BBVA card to Serve. No problems. Changed my Wells Fargo Propel card to BBVA and the load worked the first time.
Right, no loading problems on that end. What I could not do was pay off the BBVA card via Serve without the option of having to choose mail a check.
So loading Serve was not treated as cash advance?
No it was not treated as a cash advance.
