  • Direct deposit must be received within 90 days of account opening

  • Limited to one bonus per customer

  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

The bonus is available on any personal checking account, including: EZChoice Checking, MyChoice Checking, MyChoice Plus Checking, MyChoice Premium Checking, Classic Checking, Basic Banking. Let’s look at the easiest options for keeping fee free.

[Note that M&T Bank is one of the few banks that doesn’t give you a grace period, the requirements mentioned below must be completed your first month to keep it fee-free.]

EZChoice Checking

This account has a monthly fee of $9.95, soon changing to $6.95.

  • Monthly fee is waived by making just ONE transaction such as a deposit, withdrawal, or debit purchase.

Basic Banking

This account has a non-waivable $3 monthly fee.

Early Account Termination Fee

There is an early close-out fee of $10 according to these terms & conditions if you cancel within 180 days of signing up. Update: Looks to be $50 now.

Our Verdict

Quite a good deal if you in a participating area. In the past, M&T Bank has offered similar $150 sign up bonuses and sometimes lower bonuses of $75-$100. They’ve also required us to go in-branch, yet this time, they explicitly state it can be done online.

Here is how to go about doing this promotion:

  • Open an EZChoice checking account and automate a $1 ACH transfer into the M&T account from my regular checking account, OR
  • Open a MyChoice checking account and park $500 there for 6-months
  • Do $100 direct deposit using payroll or try ACH transfer and hope that works as it has in the past
  • Wait for the bonus to post, 90-days after direct deposit
  • Wait 180 days from account opening date to avoid early account termination fee
  • Close account (can be done over the phone or by mail)

We’ll add this bonus to our dedicated page and the state-specific part of our best checking sign up page. It’s also possible to churn this bonus according to this comment. Here are the other current bonuses:

  1. chris says:

I think I’ve pointed this out before, but for some reason you have OR (Oregon) in your available region list. Which wouldn’t be correct. Unless you know something I don’t?

  2. Feo says:

I tried my zip code in Cambridge, MA and I got a message saying that the offer is not available in my region. Just FYI

  3. Mark says:

I entered my Massachusetts zip code on their website and it said I was not eligible in their region. Chat with CSR resulted in the same info.

  4. jerry says:

does not work for resident alien without green card…..

  5. Steve says:

Is this churnable? I got this bonus last year.

    • Dan says:

Just did a chat session with M+T to check about getting another bonus, as I got one last year too. Answer: “Yes you would be eligible”. I saved an image of the chat session because I’m a bit paranoid.

    • Steve says:

Yes. I just got my second bonus this week. Closed my account a little more than 6 months ago.

  6. andy says:

quincy mass is not eligible either. has anyone actually found a city in MA that is eligible?

  7. CJ says:

No luck with NJ zip code either

  8. Ian says:

CT, NJ, MA, and FL zip codes do not work. It appears this offer is only good for banks/branches that originally had M&T Bank last year. Banks from the acquired Hudson City banks do not count.

  9. Wyle says:

Consider it a good thing that it’s showing ineligible for some. A few years ago I was able to sign up through one of their bonus offer links with my proper address and zip code. 6 months later – even with all requirements honestly met, no bonus because “your home region was not included in this particular offer”. There were no restrictions listed in the conditions other than, “Bonus offer is not available on all checking accounts, MAY VARY BY PRODUCT AND REGION [my caps], …”

  10. jay says:

you can’t close account at M&T over the phone. You gotta go at at branch or send snail mail. your reference link also says the same thing, which I reported to you.

  11. DMV says:

YMMV, but M&T waived the fee the first month for me since there I had some snafus getting DD set up.

Got the $200 bonus in October. Handy too since they pre-approved me (still hard pull, but whatever) for their Visa Signature card with the 0% BT + no BT fee with a $100 on $1k ESB, which was very helpful for my cash flow.

Can’t get the account opened online – forcing me to call in “due to information provided”.

  15. m f says:

    NOT available in CT

  16. John says:

Southwest Virginia doesn’t work either unfortunately. Thanks though.

  17. Hamm says:

I just tried to apply with two different zip codes (MA and PA), and I got “this offer is not available in your region.” Bummer.

  18. sl says:

did anyone try to get ACH posted and bonus posted?

  19. Jako says:

Offer not available in NJ. Please update title.

  20. Alex says:

Offer IS available in NJ and an Ally Bank ACH transfer just worked for me to clear the bonus.

  21. roger says:

    not available in nj

  22. Matt says:

FYI, this offer has been extended to June 30th, 2016, according to the official direct link.

Also, for another data point, I live in Virginia, but when I entered my ZIP code, I got an error message saying that the offer is not available in my area. There are many M&T Bank branches in Virginia, but none in the Hampton Roads area. When I entered a Richmond ZIP code, it went through. So I guess it is doing an automated verification of some kind, to make sure that there is a branch located within X miles of your ZIP code.

  23. sl says:

direct deposit from payout (I’m a bulk Bulk Seller). DD posted 4/7/16. $150 bonus posted 4/7/16.

  24. Jeff says:

Chuck or Will, or anyone else – Anybody have any info if I can get this bonus when I got a $200 M&T one last year in August? I closed the account a few months back, in February I believe, but it was opened in 2015. Thanks

  25. Ryan says:

Not valid for Northen VA zip codes today at least

    • V says:

from NoVA and opened may 10th
trial deposits for external transfer from another bank go through on the 18th
      real DD on the 23rd
      bonus received on the 23rd

one of the fastest bank bonuses i’ve ever received

  26. Brook says:

Paypal did not work for this, FYI.

  27. Anthony says:

Just an FYI- my MA zip code didn’t work, but my CT zip code (Hartford area) did… so there’s that

  28. Sa says:

MA not included in this offer.
CT on the other hand looks to be included, even if not in the title.

  29. Daniel says:

Can I qualify for the $150 checking bonus if I previously had an account?

    Great, thanks

    You’re welcome!*

  30. Keith says:

MyChoice checking requires $1500 minimum balance and not $500 as stated above. This is valid for NJ at-least

  31. Miguel says:

Be careful about sending money OUT of M&T. Pull the money back into your main checking account or pay $3

    “Bank to Bank Transfers

Transfer funds between your eligible personal M&T checking and savings accounts and your own eligible accounts at other financial institutions in the U.S. Both accounts must be titled under your name.

You can schedule one-time or recurring transfers. A $3 transfer fee will be applied to your account for any outbound transfer.

Go to Bank to Bank Transfers in the Payments and Transfers menu. A new page will open. You can then set up and complete a transfer.

You can get additional assistance by clicking Help in the Bank to Bank transfers window including:

    Making a transfer

    Adding and managing external accounts”

  32. Keith says:

DP Here – Opened account in NJ last week and did a Discover Savings ACH and got the bonus this morning. Have set up a regular ACH to avoid fees as well.

  33. Jason says:

Can anyone please show me how to get checking number on the web? The agent wont give it to me over the phone. Thanks!

  34. Nick says:

    Data Point:

Bonus just posted for me, did a PNC ACH and Discover ACH, think the PNC is the one that came thru the other is still in flight. Couldn’t tell you tho because they coded it as P2P and still gave me the bonus the next day.

  35. Chris says:

I sent the wife $100 via Venmo and she cashed out same to her M&T account. Money cleared next day and so did the bonus.

    • Chris says:

Also I can confirm that a Capital One Checking Account ACH transfer to M&T of $100 triggered the bonus for my account. Bonus received same day as deposit.

    • Rohan says:

How did you add m&t bank in venmo? I am unable to verify my bank account.

  36. Nate8 says:

Do not do this bonus if you don’t have a branch you can easily visit. They never mail account info to you to be able to set up online banking, you MUST go into branch. I’m having big regrets.

    • Deb says:

I’ve opened four accounts with them so far (2 for me and 2 for hubby) and they mailed information to my home all four times.

  37. Alex says:

Early Account Closure Fee: $50.00 if account is closed within 180 days of opening

  38. Alex says:

Also, MyChoice Checking is no longer available, at least in NJ.

  39. Jeff says:

Bonus received! This is one of the easiest bonuses ever, and just churned it. Had an M&T account for bonus last August, closed it this February (4 months ago). Opened this one, transferred $125 from Ally, and bonus posted next day. So easy.

    Highly recommend before this expires.

  40. John says:

Not available online in Southwest Virginia.

  41. Pablo says:

The expiration date changed to September 30th apparently. Also, the applicable locations for this offer needs to be changed in the title/url. Thanks!

  42. Prashanth says:

    not available in Phoenix

  43. Aaron says:

Do you need to be a resident of one of those states? I’ll be visiting family in NYC in about a week. Just wondering if I can stop into a branch and open an account, even though I’m a CA resident.

  44. jeein says:

Wow this was the easiest bonus.
DD on 6/24, bonus posted on 6/24– what the heck?

  45. SammyG says:

OK, posting this, but hoping it does not kill the deal… I signed up via the link using my old MD zipcode at the very first step, then my actual out-of-service-area mailing address when completing the application and got the bonus! Like Jeein, mine posted the same day as my “DD” (I used a transfer from Alliant).

  46. David says:

I tried this from Arizona (using both Tucson and Phoenix area zip codes) and it says it is not available in my region. So I don’t think AZ works for this bonus. Let me know if it has worked for someone in AZ.

  47. Tom says:

DP – USAA ACH push transfer of $105 tripped DD requirement. Bonus posted literally on the day the transfer hit my account

  48. Chris says:

Okay, this is dumb. I set up online access, successfully added the account to my Ally account and started a transfer, and sent in the signature form. However, I was stupid and closed the window to the signup page that had my account number on it without saving it somewhere first. I don’t think they ever send you your account and routing numbers by mail, as the only thing I got from them was the debit card.

The transfer posted, and the bonus also posted the same day, so at least that’s okay.
I can login online, and transfer from Ally, but is there any way to find account info from your online account? There’s a branch somewhat close by if I need to go there, but I’d rather try doing this all online first.

  49. Ian says:

DP today: I just checked their online offerings of checking accounts for 4 states, and the MyChoice Checking is Not being offered!?! I see EZ Choice ($6.95 monthly fee, waived with min 1 transaction), and MyChoice Plus Checking ($14.95 monthly fee, waived with min daily balance of $2500).

  50. Ian says:

Note, there are 4 branches in FL (Palm Beach area)!

  51. Jason says:

ACH from PNC to M&T on 9/6, bonus $150 posted on 9/8

  52. Harold says:

It’s been extended again, until December 31, 2016.

I’ve done two of these now, for $150 and $200. Anyone done a third? Easiest bonus ever.

    • Tim says:

I did the $200 and $150 bonus for both me and my wife. I agree…easiest bonus EVER and SO fast! Wondering if anybody has tried for a third as well…

  55. Anthony says:

Has anyone closed the account before 6 months? If so, did you get hit with a fee?

  56. dizzy says:

Hey, thanks for the info here. I got both the $200 and $150 bonus, they both posted so quick. It’s good since they actually have a branch in my “home” town (I travel, mostly abroad, 99% of the year). In my head it just seems like it’s more legit that way, sometimes I have problems applying for accounts abroad.

Question: to avoid inactivity fee, is it possible to just transfer funds between my two M&T accounts? That would be super easy if so.

  57. J Flag says:

DD triggered with a $105 transfer from my Santander. Bonus posted the same day.

  58. illag says:

  65. Bo says:

DD from Poshmark also works. Bonus posted the same day on 1/10. Thank you!

  66. Jake says:

How often can you churn this bonus? Once per calander year?

  67. red says:

    some updated info:

there’s no mychoice checking. the available ones are:
    EZChoice Checking
    MyChoice Plus Checking
    MyChoice Premium Checking
    M&T Classic Checking With Interest(for ages 50+)
    Basic Banking

The best would be EZChoice checking (Make just ONE transaction such as a deposit, withdrawal, or debit purchase to waive monthly fee)

  68. Jake says:

Can I do this offer more than once?

    • Don’t think you can do ths specific offer more than once, but as always be the DP you want to see.

    • Chris says:

I’m trying. I received the $150 and the $200 bonus last year. The $200 account is actually still open. If I remember correctly, the code for the $200 bonus was also QM. So here’s to hoping a new calendar year will trigger the bonus. i will report back in a few days.

      • Chris G says:

UPDATE: It worked. $150 bonus posted today. My $200 bonus account from last year is still is open too. Also $100 transfer from Capital One checking triggered the bonus. I keep them fee free by transferring 1 dollar to them via Venmo.

        • Eric says:

Did you also do the $200 bonus again? Did you use the same contact details (email, phone, address, etc.) for all of your accounts? Do all of the accounts appear in the same login?

          • Chris G says:

In order I’ve done $150, $200, $150. Yes, same contact info for all 3. The app actually asks you if you have any other M&T accounts and if so for their account numbers. I’ve input everything honestly.

          • Chris G says:

Sorry, yes the accounts all show under the same login.

          • Eric says:

Thanks for the info. Do you think I should close my account first? I’ve had it for over 6 months.

Is there any reason you didn’t do the $200 and $250 offers this time too?

          • Chris G says:

Honestly, I don’t think it matters either way. I would close it and wait a week or so but that’s just me.

The $250 offer is MyChoice Premium: $24.95, waived with:
Maintain an average daily balance of $7,500 or more in the account so I’m not touching that. And to be honest, I didn’t know the $200 was active again so Thanks!

Psst… I did this $150 bonus 6 months ago, closed the account, opened a new one… and got another $150. About to close the account for the $200 I opened 6 months ago, and going to try to open another account for the $200. Wish me luck — churning $350 a year would be solid

    • EBF says:

Hi Andrew. I know this is a bit late, but do you recall if you did the *same* offer again? As in, did you use the same promo code? There are data points on opening accounts with *different* codes, but wondering if you have been doing the same code.

  78. MarcoPolo says:

Is the offer per person or per household?

  79. MarcoPolo says:

    Thanks @William Charles

    Two questions:
    1. Do you have to send them the signed “Signature card” in order to receive the bonus?
I believe Signature card is only useful if you intend on writing checks which I am not.

    2. I am unable to enroll for online access using Account # & SSN immediately after opening the account.

Did anyone else had that problem?

    • Eric says:

No, I received my bonus and haven’t sent in the signature card yet. I think it said it was required so I am probably going to send it in.

For all of that have signed up for multiple M&T accounts did you send in the signature card each time or only for the first account?

      • Eric says:

I meant to write “For all of you”.

      • PattI says:

I did send it for all of them. If I’m able to open a 3rd (will try in another week or so) I will send in another.
Also I am doing these accounts not only for myself but for hubby and 20 yr old son. So everything is in triplicate. I’m afraid to put all 3 in one envelope in case it’s a computer that opens and scans them.
        For $1 I don’t want to take a chance losing $750 in bonus $.

    • PattI says:

I sent the signature card in anyway. If I have to keep the account for 6 months, I might as well cross keep everything as valid as can be. With all the easy money here, what’s stamp in the grand scheme of things?

  80. MarcoPolo says:

If it is “Soft” pull then why are they asking for consent to this:

By clicking the box(es) below, you certify, authorize and agree that:
All information given in this application is true, correct and complete and is given for the purpose of opening the account(s) and obtaining services in connection with the account(s). You authorize M&T Bank to obtain consumer reports in connection with the application, the opening, update or renewal of any loan or deposit account you apply for, and any other program we offer. Upon request, we will inform you if a consumer report has been obtained and will give you the name and address of the agency furnishing the report. We may review any information in your consumer report, including credit history and past banking relationships, and you may be asked questions based on that information. If you are applying to open a joint account, you acknowledge and agree that information that you provide or that we collect in connection with this application (including information contained in a consumer report about you) may be shared with, and be available to, the other joint applicant(s). Any reason why? Will it work if I wait a day?

  82. Mat says:

Stupid question, I know. but how do I do the ACH if i dont know the account number. I cant get it without the statement, which means i have to wait 30 days… something isnt right. Please help!!!

    • Eric says:

When you signed up, at the end M&T should have provided your new checking account #.

      • Mat says:

Thanks. I never saw it and customer service wont give it to me over the phone. Understandable I guess. So now i’m stuck.

    • MarcoPolo says:

On the confirmation page they provide you with the routing # as well as the Account #.
You can also enroll for online access using your SSN and Account # BUT only BEFORE 10.30 PM. After that their system goes into maintenance mode and doesn’t allow enrollment.

Pro Tip: I always take screenshots of every page while signing up. I use Chrome extension “Fireshot”. This makes life easier as I have a record for future.

  83. Eugene says:

Direct link auto-fills QD as the promo code on the application.

By clicking one “Email My Coupon”, I received yet another code (QC) in my email. However, the email includes this message: “Print this coupon and take it to an M&T Bank branch or show it on your mobile device.”

I’m not sure if the QC promo code can be used online, but I would assume the banker would just open up the same link and fills in QC for you.

  84. Superchurn says:

Summing up what counts as DD from the above comments…

    santander ACH push works
    venmo deposit works
    vanguard brokerage deposit works
    discover savings ACH push works
    PNC ACH push works
capone360 ACH push works cashout works
    USAA ACH push works

  85. Billy says:

PNC triggered as DD. Got the $150 bonus same day.

  86. MarcoPolo says:

Does anyone knows which Banks will verify M&T Bank without doing the trial deposits?
I don’t want to wait for trial deposits to verify my M&T Bank account before doing the ACH push.

    • Eric says:

      • MarcoPolo says:

PNC Bank also did for M&T Bank.
However, I think it depends on Bank to bank since it did not do instant verification of my Capital one savings..

    • Ken says:

Trial deposits are next day for me, so if you don’t have a Santander account it’ll be an extra day.

      • MarcoPolo says:

        Thanks @Eric & @Ken.
I setup my Capital One 360 for DD but it’s been 5 days and the trial deposits have not reached. That’s the reason I wanted to know and now I’ll use Santander.

        • Ken says:

5 days is way too long. You must have entered the wrong routing/account number into the form.

          • MarcoPolo says:

I double checked and it is correct.
I never type routing/account number. I just copy & paste them directly from my online banking site.
Guess I have to call them on Monday to find out why.

          • Ken says:

That is odd. I would try from another account like Wells Fargo or Discover before calling M&T. You could also call c360 to see if they have any rejection messages.

          • MarcoPolo says:

            Thanks @Ken
I already did it via Wells Fargo. Let’s hope this goes through

        • Patti says:

Call Capital One 360. It shouldn’t take this long but it has happened to me last year and the agent agreed it should have posted already so she resent another one and it was there the next day or 2.
I hope this has already been resolved for you.

  87. MarcoPolo says:

    Sorry a Noob question:
How do you send money using Venmo

  88. MarcoPolo says:

    Another question:
What are you doing with the Debit card they sent?
    Are you activating it?
What if you applied for multiple accounts?

    • Ken says:

Haven’t decided yet. Someone else mentioned that an ACH doesn’t count for monthly activity so I may make a purchase each month with the debit card.

      • Patti says:

When I did a similar bonus last year I left $5 in the account and just scheduled a $1 payment each month to our credit card that we use for daily use so there’s always something to be paid on it. I schedule the payment from my credit card bank’s website to occur once per month for months 2-5 since month 1 has opening & bonus activity. Once the balance is down to $0, it’s been 6 months and can close it.

  89. MarcoPolo says:

Does anyone knows how to transfer out the bonus?
I tried using bank to bank transfer but the page says:

    Activate Transfers and Payments
You are currently not authorized for Transfers and Payments.
Transfers and Loan Payments is available to all account holders.
In order to activate Transfers and Payments, we need some additional information. We require this for added security and you will only need to do it one time.
To protect your information, we ask all customers to activate Transfers and Payments by entering their M&T Check Card or ATM Card and the associated PIN or their M&T Credit Card and the associated 3-Digit Security Code. To request a card, click the button below or call M&T Online Customer Service.

But I already have a debit card which has been activated.

    • Ken says:

Pull the funds from your external account that you used for your direct deposit. Never use the bonus bank to push funds out. If you used an employer you’ll have to setup an external account to pull funds.

      • MarcoPolo says:

        Thanks @Ken

        Great tip 🙂

      • Patti says:

Why do you say never use the bonus bank to push funds out? I almost always use my Capital One 360 to push & pull anywhere only because they’re so easy and never a fee, but I’m just curious why you say this.

        • Ken says:

It’s just easier to have a single link than to setup links between accounts, plus some banks charge for transfers and you can use an account that is known to not charge.

    • Patti says:

M&T charges a $3 fee to push funds out to an external bank. Another reason I LOVE Capital One 360 though there probably are others just as convenient.

  90. MarcoPolo says:

If you love Capital One which only allows you to link three accounts then you’ll be ecstatic with Ally Bank which allows unlimited number and their transfers are faster usually next day depending on certain factors.

    • Patti says:

Thank you for that tip. I have heard good reviews of Ally on another forum, including a bit higher interest rate on savings accounts too.
That alone was not enough to make the switch but being limited to 3 linked accounts is very frustrating right now.
I will look into Ally and maybe will switch after the dust settles from the 12 checking accts I’m currently juggling.

      I reaaly appreciate the tip!

      • Patti says:

        Oops, really.

      • MarcoPolo says:

It’s worth having Ally Bank account without any promo since it also provides instant verification for lot of banks> For example, with Capital I had to wait for few days for small deposits to post and then verify but Ally did instant verification and I could just ACH $100 to it and within a day the bonus posted. The entire process took 3 days which I has to wait to verify account with Capital one.

    • Iz says:

Are there any bonuses for Ally now? Are there ever? Thanks.

  91. Patt says:

I have a stupid question…. What exactly do you mean when you say a deal is “churnable”?
I did one M&T bonus last year for $150 and have 2 going concurrently now. My notes do not include the exact promo code I used last year but in Feb when I started to enter promo code QO, once I pressed the Q key, QL was offered to me as if that’s what I had entered once before. I am assuming that’s the code I used last year.
So does churnable mean I can use that same code again? or it means I can get as many bonuses as they have codes to offer?

I was under the impression I can only get 1 bonus per person per promo code.

  92. Mat says:

in terms of leaving the account open for the 180 days, what balance do I need to maintain?

    • Ken says:

There is no minimum balance for EZChoice checking according to the agent I spoke to. I keep $25 in there to do the monthly debit purchase to waive the monthly fee.

  93. Yoshi says:

    Applied 2/26
    Opening deposit posted 3/3*
    WF transfer 3/10
    Bonus posted 3/10

M&T is beautifully fast. I love it. Looking forward to finishing off the quadfecta shortly (2 down, 2 to go)!

*Note: I already had multiple M&T accounts before I opened this account. In fact, the opening transfer came from one of those M&T accounts. I did not have to “hide” the fact that I was a current customer.

  94. MarcoPolo says:

    Good harvest 🙂
How do you keep then fee free?

  95. Iz says:

I did this bonus about 2 months ago, and it went very smoothly. Is there any way to churn it now? Am I missing something? Thanks!

  96. Iz says:

If I am understanding this correctly, although I did the $150 bonus (and still have the account open), I can also open separate accounts and get the $250 (QO) bonus, and the $200 (QK) bonus, and the $200 (QL) bonus, all concurrently. Is this correct? If yes, this is awesome! Sounds too good to be true…

    • MarcoPolo says:

I don’t think that it will work if you try them concurrently.
Better to try them one by one:
Apply for one at a time and let the bonus post after meeting the requirements.
I tried applying for a second account under my DW and it went to pending and took a long time to get approved after hassles.
Remember, if it goes to pending then it has be manually reviewed and approved and no one knows yet if you still get the bonus for manually approved accounts.

      • Iz says:

        Thanks for the quick reply!
So you’re saying to just wait until each bonus posts before applying for the next account. You are NOT saying to lose the account first. Correct? that’s not a very long time, in M&T time! (As opposed to HSBC… ;))
IINM I saw DPs that even concurrently works, but your point is well taken…

      • Patti says:

MarcoPolo, I did the $250 and $200 offers approx. 10 days apart. So by the time I was done with the dd funds from the first account, I pulled them back and pushed them again to the 2nd account. Before the dd hit the 2nd account, I requested the downgrade because the $250 account has some pretty steep requirements that I knew we could not fulfill.
So it was downgraded before the first statement posted so we wouldn’t get hit with the monthly service fee.

Now I’m starting to wonder if it’s too soon to try for a 3rd. I read on one of these M&T threads about someone having 5 accounts open at the same time. 😮

        • MarcoPolo says:

          I have done 3 offers (150, 200 & 200) each week successfully.
I use Ally so ACH is fast and don’t even have to wait for trial deposits since Ally does instant verification.

I don’t know if it is even possible to open 5 accounts at the same time since they will be flagged as duplicates.

  97. Iz says:

I know that an ACH push from a different bank works to trigger the bonus. How about an ACH pull from M&T? Does that work?

    • Patti says:

I havent tried it but M&T charges $3 for a transfer to/from another bank if scheduled through M&T. Even if you dont mind the fee, one doesn’t typically pull their dd from their employer’s bank but you’re free to try it.

    • MarcoPolo says:

Pull never works. It has to a “Push”.
IIRC a push from M&T Bank has worked for someone.
I would just stick to tried and tested methods unless you are feeling very adventurous.

  98. Iz says:

Thanks, Patti and Marco Polo. My reason to pull is that I wanted it to come from TD, and they charge to push. But I’ll try pushing from a different M&T account, and see it that works. If not, I have other ideas…

  99. Iz says:

To do a push from M&T to M&T, do I select “Transfer between your M&T accounts”? If not, how would I do it? Thanks!

  100. Patti says:

Look into Ally or Capital One 360. I’m a huge fan of Cap One and MarcoPolo loves Ally. As you explore this website and read comments about which bank pushes count as a dd, you will see these 2 bank names come up often.
I haven’t looked into Ally yet (working a lot of OT lately) but I’ve been a Cap One customer for 12 years and they never charge fees unless you’re overdrawn.
Marco says Ally is all that I love about Cap One and then some. I plan to check it out soon.

    • Darv says:

Patti be careful about changing your external account out too quickly with CapOne360. They have been known to shut people down for doing this too much and too quickly. They called me once about it, I stopped with them except maybe one new account per 90 days.

Ally doesn’t seem to care, although I had a transfer be rejected and they were not happy and said if it happens again, might take three months to get account access restored.

People should tread a bit more lightly than they are. CapOne360 is my main bank and I won’t mess with them.

      • Patti says:

So far I’ve done 3 M&T accounts this year, each being 1 month apart.
The only thing that raised a flag with CO360 was when dh and ds20 at different times had 2 M&T accounts linked to their CO accounts at the same time.

Their accounts were frozen by security and they had to call and explain. Ds20 told them flat out that M&T was offering a bonus so he took them up on their offer. had no problem with that. They kept him on hold while they called M&T to verify that both accounts actually belonged to him. Apparantly as long as someone is not linking to other people’s accounts they are ok with it.
I’m taking a break for a while but with the next M&T bonus we do I will be sure to sever the link of the old M&T account before adding the new one.

  101. MarcoPolo says:

I have both Capital One & Ally for many many years but the ease, speed ans customer service from Ally blew me away.
Once you try Ally you’ll hardly use Capital One and therefore I highly recommend Ally especially if you are doing multiple bank account bonus deals.

There is an entire thread devoted to Ally on Fatwallet here:

  102. Iz says:

    Thanks again Patti & MP!
Those banks sound great, but the advantage of internal M&T is that I don’t need to confirm trial deposits. So if I want to do it internally, do I select “Transfer between your M&T accounts”? Thanks.
Also, are there ever bonuses for Ally?

    • Ken says:

There is no way that an internal transfer form one M&T account to another M&T account will work to trigger the bonus. You need to ACH push from an external account to M&T. This is how pretty much all banks work with respect to triggering the bonuses.

  103. Iz says:

I did. I’m just explaining what I saw.

    • Ken says:

I’m confused. You mentioned transfers and having to confirm trial deposits and that’s from linking an external account. It’s unrelated to initial funding.

      • Iz says:

Correct. I originally thought that the DP re an internal transfer was for the bonus. Then I said that perhaps it was only for the initial deposit. If you’re still confused, forget about it; it’s not that important. 🙂

  104. MarcoPolo says:

Does Amazon GC purchase or balance reload counts as a transaction to avoid monthly maintenance fee?

    • sirtheta says:

Pretty much anything that changes the balance counts (except for fees and the usual suspects), so definitely.

      • Ken says:

Someone reported that their ACH did not count to waive the monthly fee. I’ve tried a small AZ reload for all my accounts and I should know if it works in a week or two.

        • Patti says:

Ken, Perhaps that person did not have EZ Checking.
With EZ Checking, ANY transaction counts as activity and waives the monthly fee.
For my previous EZ Checking bonus, I left $5 in the account after withdrawing the dd funds, opening funds, & trial deposits. Then each month for 5 months I scheduled a $1 payment to my cc through that bank’s website.
That $1 withdraw was enough to waive the monthly fee.

          • Ken says:

            It’s EZChoice 😉

I hope you’re both right, as I’d much rather ACH than do small purchases.

          • John says:

Is it true that the monthly fee is first charged, then refunded the same day if you qualify for a waiver? If so, wouldn’t this trigger an overdraft fee? ($6.95 charge on a $5 balance)

        • sirtheta says:

I agree with Patti below — they must’ve had a different account. I’ve been doing an ACH push with no problem.

  105. Mike t. says:

DP: on landing page would not take my michigan zip code. Applied with a random zip code from nyc. On application page itself, Applied with my real michigan address zip etc. App went through. Should know on a week or so if i get bonus. But i imagine i would as application is approved.

  106. Ken says:

When does this QD code expire? Conflicting info in the post.

  107. Mark says:

When opening an additional checking account how are folks answering the question as to whether you currently have an M&T checking account?

does a “yes” or “no” impact the potential bonus?

  108. Nick says:

Has anyone noticed that the confirmation number in the signature card they tell you to sign at the final step of the application is different than the one in the email they sent?
My numbers are totally different. And I just realized it after i faxed it in. Hope they dont end up closing my account…

    • Ken says:

I talked to them and they said signature cards are not necessary for accounts opened online. And I don’t ever request checks so they don’t need to compare my signature for that either.

  109. Chris says:

I believe this bonus may have been replaced by the QC bonus here
When I click the direct link to the offer and ask for an email coupon, it sent me that coupon in the post above.

  110. Mike says:

When you open your 2nd (or 3rd or 4th) M&T checking account, do you answer “yes” to the question “Do you currently have an M&T personal checking, savings or CD account” during the application? Or do you lie?

My instinct is to be honest (it seems like it could possibly be considered fraud otherwise), but it seems like answering honestly would clearly label yourself as ineligible for the additional bonuses…

  111. Adrian says:

    More DPs

Opened QD and QI on same day. Both account showed up under same login within 3 days.

Transferred $100 to each from AMEX Personal Savings account last night 4/18. Deposit and signup bonus both posted today.

This has got to be the easiest and most lucrative bank.

    Thanks DoC!

  112. Tom says:

Does anyone know if you have to send the signature card in before signing up for a second account?

    • Ken says:

An agent has told me that signature cards are not required for accounts opened online. I’ve sent them in for about half my accounts though. Also I think they only need the card to compare your signature on checks you write.

      • Patti says:

My last app stopped me before fully opening the account saying they needed to verify the info I gave. The next day it showed with my other 2 accts when I logged in.
Still I was snail-mailed a signature form that had my name and code # (not acct #) handwritten.
For that reason I mailed it in.
My 4th bonus should post tomorrow and I haven’t been denied new accounts yet. I’d like to keep it that way. A 49 cent stamp isn’t worth any future troubles with the bank. I’ll keep mailing them forms as long as they keep opening accounts for me.

  113. Tom says:

Is there any reason to use a different offer code for each application if they allow churning? It seems like it makes the most sense to just re-use the $200 code rather than using codes that give less.

    • Ken says:

AFAIK nobody has used the same promo code more than once for the same account type, most probably EZChoice.

    • Patti says:

Try it and let us know how it works out.
If that’s the case, we’ll just keep going after the $250 bonuses then downgrade later.

  114. andrew says:

Just opened account number 8! 🙂

    • Ken says:

Have you only used each code once or have you been recycling them?

      • andrew says:

Just one code each — I will try to recycle a code after the bonus posts on this as this will be the last code I’ve never used before. This is unless DOC brings up another 5 codes lol

  115. Stacy says:

Tried to open my 4th M&T account this morning. Got:

    Application Review
Thank you for applying for an M&T Bank account. We are in the process of verifying the information you have provided.
You will be contacted by telephone or e-mail within the next three (3) business days.
Please retain the following confirmation number for your records: XXXXXXXXX
Thank you for your patience and for choosing M&T.

  116. Pablo says:

Does anyone know if transferring $1 between EZchoice accounts fufill the monthly service fee waiver requirement? Hoping it would be that easy instead of me having to transfer $1 or withdraw $1 from the accounts to an external account. Thanks!

  117. Chris M says:

I’ve had no issues opening a single M&T account (I currently have 5) up until this one. I got a screen at the end of the process where I input all of my information and agree to the disclosures with a message that said they couldn’t open the account based on the information provided. It didn’t even let me get to the identification verification step. Has this ever happened to anyone else?

Not long before M&T denied me, I tried to open a PNC account for the $300 bonus and they gave a similar explanation at the end saying the account couldn’t be opened online. But with that application, it let me do the identity verification questions. Since I know I answered them correctly, I tried a second time and it gave me 5 different identity verification questions. No dice the second time either.

Did I just create a red flag in some system by attempting to open a few accounts in a short time span? Has anyone else ever had this issue? If so, did it fix itself on its own? Did you have to do something? Does it never go away? What do I do? I don’t want this wild ride of bank account sign up bonuses to end!

    • Aks says:

One of CS told me that there is limit of 2 application within 30days. How may applications both valid and invalid you made in last 30 days?

  118. bob says:

Can you open multiple EZchoice accounts? I’d like to keep using that account type because it has the easiest requirements.

  119. Stephen says:

Opened 6/15 EZ choice checking with 25$ initial deposit
    Push from Ally 6/19 $100
    6/20 $150 bonus posted

FYI, I do not reside in the states listed above. I’m going to try the other promo code now, will report DP back.

    • Stephen says:

Can anyone comment on how to get my second account linked to my first online profile? Does it happen automatically or do you enroll again? How many days does it take?

  120. Steve says:

Southeast Virginia zip code isn’t working. Bummer since I just did the QC one a few weeks ago.

  121. Jon says:

Using the link above, I got a coupon telling me to enter QC (which I’ve already used). How do you get this bonus?

    • Ralph says:

Why not open it online? When I use the link above it gives me the option to open an account online, just input the zip code of one of the listed states (I used a New York zip code) and when you get to the page where it shows the promo code, QD is already entered (and you can’t change it).

  122. Bo says:

Opened QD on 19 May with push from Wells Fargo. Opened 2nd QD account on 14 Jun with push from Wells Fargo. Easy pickins.

    • Stephen says:

You opened 2 QD accounts? Don’t you mean you opened a second account with another promo code? I may just open another account before the expiration date if they allow churning the same code…
