Our Verdict

M&T Bank doesn’t seem to limit you to just one bonus, the state restriction isn’t enforced either. I really don’t know how long this can/will last. They also have the following offers:

      We’ve been able to stack bonuses from each promo code. Looks like they added a new language “Only one bonus will be awarded regardless of the number of accounts, titling on account and the number of direct deposits arrangements established.” so we’ll see how that plays out.

    Just a heads up to everyone, M&T bank blocked me from opening accounts online with them for 60 days. When I called and asked about it they said I had been opening/attempting to open too many accounts…

    I might print this coupon out and take it in branch to see if I can get the bonus that way.

        I did this and it worked! Which is good because I still have a few days to go before I can close accounts #1 and #2, but #3 was accepted, but never showed up bc of an ID verification thing (I’m out of the country for another 2 weeks and can’t take care of it yet). My plan is to go into branch to verify. Then in another branch (they are all over NJ) close 1 & 2. Then proceed with more.

            On my account it did…I have 3 accounts right now although only one is showing (needed verification mailed in and I am out of the US). I’ve had $5 in each of the accounts since end of 2016, I just transfer $1 or so between each on the website once a month and I don’t see any fees applied.

      Did you open a few of them in the course of a short period of time? Maybe we can figure out where the computer cuts you off. I just started with this bank and decided to test it out. I opened 3 over the last 2 weeks on different days but when I tried for the 4th I got an error message saying come into the branch to open. (Never even made it to the id verification page on that one.)

    What routing number do you use if you’re out of state? It seems like it “thought” my locations was NY when opening. Didn’t bother recording the routing number since I thought it’d be easy to fine. Didn’t know they had 3….

      I’m a PA resident and applied online. Was provided 022000046 as my routing number. The listed Pennsylvania and Delaware number may be for accounts opened in-branch or a legacy routing number.

        If you got that without the account#, i will change to the actual state specific one once they create the account#. The snail mail that comes with the account# shows that. Also, for online transfer from other bank, it doesn’t matter, as long as the account# is correct. When it happened to me once, i did guess the account# and did a transfer using the PA routing and it worked and bonus posted.

        I’m a PA resident too. Opened all of ours online and got both the 022 and 0313 routing. Who knows how it decides. It even split on accounts we opened on the same offer code. One for hubby was one routing number, another for me was different routing number, same day opening, same address, same offer code, same laptop applied on.

    I just applied for this and ran into two snags at the confirmation page that did not happen with my first two M&T bank accounts.

    1st: They did not list anything next to “Account Number(s):”
    With my first two accounts, this is where my account number was listed, so once I was able to see the account in online banking, I was able to set up the ACH from Ally. I don’t remember getting any other correspondence with my account numbers with the first two. Hopefully I don’t have to call in to get them this time. I will wait until I get everything in the mail before calling.

    2nd: Under the line about their Switch Kit, in red, it says, “We were unable to use the PIN you provided. You will receive a separate mailing containing your new PIN.”
    I used the exact same PIN as on my first account. I set a different PIN on my second account.

    May I suggest to everyone else, try using a different PIN for each of your M&T accounts and hopefully you won’t run into the issues I did.

    I’ll try to come back and update with any new useful information.

      No problem, they’ll mail you a letter with your account number or it will show up in other M&T logins. For me I didn’t even get to the last page with account number on it, so I’m still waiting to see what happens.

          @Justin – I just waited till the new account either showed up in an existing login or they mailed me my account number. My newest account did not show up in any existing logins so I had to create a new login.

            You created a new login using the debit card they sent you after you opened the account? Did they ever actually send an acct number or did you see that once you created the new login?

          I did make it through the ID verification since they were all easy, known questions. But I did not make it to the last confirmation page with account number. The app was likely manually processed, hence the long wait time. They have got to be swamped.

      Nothing to worry.
      This has happened to me as well on my DW’s application(s).
      Within a week you’ll receive the account number & PIN in the mail and your new account will appear under your previous login.

        I never got this info…eventually was requested to mail in some verification but I am out of the country for another 2 weeks so haven’t yet (this happened in Feb so I am dubious as to whether they already shut that new account down…my other 2 are fine tho)

    I have set up 3 of these accounts in the past 3 weeks. No account numbers yet on the 2nd and 3rd, so have not yet set up the DD. I have gotten debit cards and welcome letters on all 3 accounts in snail mail – but no account numbers listed anywhere.

    It does seem a bit odd that the bank is rolling out multiple offers so quickly. Makes them appear less than stable.

    When you open your 2nd (or 3rd or 4th) M&T checking account, do you answer “yes” to the question “Do you currently have an M&T personal checking, savings or CD account” during the application? Or do you lie?

    My instinct is to be honest (it seems like it could possibly be considered fraud otherwise), but it seems like answering honestly would clearly label yourself as ineligible for the additional bonuses…

    I currently have 5 accounts and my wife has 7. On each new opening, I answer “yes” and provide an existing account number. As the number says suggest, it hasn’t not affected me from opening additional accounts.

      Wow. I too also answer honestly. I use my oldest open account, but not brave enough to have 7 accounts going. I have 4 now, so hardly new to this though.

      I really expect for this flood to get stopped any day, and I suspect there will be some backlash. Not sure if that will be attempted clawbacks, stern/threatening letters, or what – but there is no way all of these payouts will stay. They can’t possibly be making any money on the vast majority of the new accounts, and I just don’t know how they can be this stupid to allow it to go on. I have a feeling we will be seeing this one on the news real soon.

      If they aren’t protecting their own money, makes you wonder how well they are protecting ours…. but most of us are only keeping a bare minimum of funds in the accounts, just to keep them free. And LOL to the guy ballsy enough to ACH transfer a penny every month to keep the account free – if I ran the sending or receiving bank I would find a reason to kick you out just for being a nuisance. They do reserve the right to shutdown your accounts for basically any reason.

        I agree with everything you say here. I see no way how this can be sustainable. The amount of money this bank has given away to readers of this site alone must be staggering. That is most of the reason why I have been so aggressive in opening new accounts. I figure this is bound to be halted at some point, so why not get in while the going is still good. (I readily admit that it’s this kind of logic that gets deals like this eventually stopped, so sorry. But clearly I am not alone.)

        This is also the main reason why I always tell the truth about having other accounts with them. What’s interesting is that when my wife opens accounts, they always go through the manual review process but are always ulti,ately approved. Which makes me think the bank has to be fully aware that she has 6 other accounts open. Maybe they like to report how many new accounts that have been opened to their shareholders? But there’s no way this can be profitable.

        I will say that on one of my 12 accounts, I forgot to make a transaction and was hit with the monthly fee. Normally, I would call the bank and say whatever I needed to say to get the charge waived, but in this case, I’m happy to give them the $6.95 in exchange for the $2000+ they have given me. I might even do this wth one other account so they/I can maintain the illusion that I will be a profitable customer.

        I do love the idea of this story making the news. But presumably M+T would have no interest in publicizing how much money they have given away.

    Tried to open an 8th account and it was approved but the account number didn’t show up (as a couple people above have mentioned) and after 24 hours it is still not in my online banking. Wondering what the best course of action is here. Probably should just wait it out?

      I keep seeing a suggestion to do a transfer between accounts in order to see the account number.

      I tried that. It won’t let enable that feature unless I enter my ATM card number- somewhere- but nowhere I can see to enter it. Again, trying to do anything to avoid calling or emailing.

      If anyone can find the answer key that unlocks this feature – DOC should give them a gold star lol.

        You don’t need to transfer to see an account#. Just send a secure message asking anything/thanking/etc…Then go to sent messages, you will see the account# in the message you sent.

        I already have an existing login (and existing accounts) and the new account is not showing up there thus I wouldn’t be able to do a transfer.

        For me, I had to wait a couple days before the field appeared to enter my ATM number (and I think it’s just your PIN they actually want).

        However, when I went to actually do the transfer, it repeatedly failed. Turns out, this meant my account was pending some type of verification of my identity and a hold was placed on activity. I send a SM asking about it, and had to fax in my driver’s license, social security card, and a recent utility bill with my address on it to get the hold lifted. I also called in the day after the second time I faxed it, and had to give my phone number over the phone.

        It was a big pain, but the restriction is finally lifted now, and I can transfer funds between my two accounts (soon to be four with this promo and QL, to add to QD and QI). I confirmed with the rep on the phone that transferring between two accounts qualified as a transaction, though we’ll see if I actually get hit with a fee or not after the 30th.

        No idea if I’ll have to do this verification stuff again for the accounts I’m opening today. I hope not.

      Wait. same happened to me on my 3rd account. They’ll send u a slip in the mail with the account#, or, you just wait for it to appear in your account and then initiate a secure message from the account and go back to the inbox to see the whole account number.

    Opened another a/c today for the QC code and the account showed up right away in my old login as well as on confirmation. If your account info shows up on confirmation page and you want that a/c to show up in your existing login – make sure to click the enroll now link in the bottom of the A/c confirmation page. Clicking it will do nothing but show a blank confirmation. That is the trigger to link it to your existing login.

    Successfully got my 7th bonus. $1500 haul so far with MTB. Now, if it will stop giving the come to branch error for my wife. She has only 1 a/c which we opened in branch. Incognito trick didnt help. May be i should wait for couple of months and try again.

      it happened with my first account too but after that it was a smooth ride for transferring between the accounts.

        Do all of the debit cards need to be activated or only 1? I’m not sure if I ever activated the card for my first account that I opened several months ago (before all of this craziness).

          I always activate all of mine from all banks/accounts. Usually you need an active debit card to do things like recovering passwords and enabling transfers. Takes less than a minute to do.

      I recently applied using QK, not realizing it had expired. When I SM’ed about having signed up for a bonus, they told me the code I used was expired and I wouldn’t be getting one.

        I told them I had a couple of offers and asked if they could retroactively apply the one that would not have been expired, they said no, and suggested going into a branch to talk to a manager.

          You made a series of serious mistakes which will kill the deal not only for you but for everyone else.
          Not only you did not read the expiry date of the promotion but also alerted M&T Bank that you have a number of promo codes.
          If you have not alerted them then in all probability you would have received the bonus despite the code being expired.
          But by contacting them you have made sure that you will not receive the bonus.
          It is ALWAYS a good idea to READ the original post as well as the comment section to LEARN before applying.
          I am hoping that you did not tell them how you got the codes you mentioned.
          Now, you still have a chance to open other account using the UNEXPIRED promo code and receive the bonus.
          In near future there will be (hopefully) more codes to get more bonuses if you and everyone else will REFRAIN from contacting the bank if they make a mistake or you did not get the bonus.
          Please don’t kill the GOLDEN GOOSE !!!!

            I don’t understand why people always feel the need to contact the bank/company/whatever. There is absolutely nothing wrong with just letting things lie as they are. This is the same reason why deals die from Slickdeals because some clown calls the company who then kills the deal. I just don’t get it.

            Yeah, you can go ahead and take a deep breath now. I said I had a couple of offers and must have used the older one. I’ve gotten mailers from them. They have a branch in my town. I’m not sure of many things, but I’m sure it’s going to be the people with 7+ checking accounts that will kill that goose way before I do. Both of the codes I had are now expired, but one would have been good if I had used it when I opened the account. I didn’t link them to this site or give them a lesson in churning. I just checked that the offer was linked to my account and wondered when I might get the bonus.

    Received this message from M&T after applying for a second checking account (different type than first) minutes after successfully applying for the first one:
    “Thank you for applying for an M&T Bank account. Due to the information you provided, we are unable to process your application through the online channel. For assistance, please contact us at 1-800-724-3222 or visit one of our local branches.”
    Anyone else have success applying for more accounts later? Or do you have a suggestion why I am getting this message?

      Chances are you just did the second one too soon. I usually wait until the last bonus has posted before I apply again. But you can simply try again in 2 days.

    Is there any strategy for being accepted after applying to open these bank accounts? In the last two days, I’ve tried to open a BMO Harris checking acct and an M&T Bank checking acct for the bonuses and got declined on both of them.

      The best strategy is to STOP applying if declined and check your CHEXsystems report to look for any red flags.

      It should count as account activity. Instead just pay a bill of about 5 bucks and you should be okay.

      However, I just find it easier to schedule a monthly payment of $1 from my Santander account to M&T account.

    I think they may have assigned a different routing number compared to the previous many accounts for us. Trial deposits form Wells Fargo and Alliant haven’t shown up yet and they should’ve shown up Wednesday.

      I just opened an account but did not input the ZIP code at the start.
      The application went through without a hitch and even the account was almost instantaneously available online.
      However, the routing number was for NY as compared to all my previous accounts which was in my state.
      I did not use any VPN.

    I got a “pending” due to being outside their banking footprint.

    At least for this one, it looks like it will be restricted to inside the targeted states.

    I took a break for a little from bank accounts. Just did the QD code. Since this is so close to expiring, I’m going to wait and see what they offer after 6/30. Hopefully the new ones won’t have the limited language.

      When you email the coupon the code is QC but when you click the link to open the account the code QD shows up in the url.
      This means that code QD is still valid till September 2017 just like QC
      @ DoC please make note.

    For those with experience, what does the “Due to the information you provided, we are unable to process your application through the online channel.” mean? Is it always just opening a second account too soon? Or is it identity verification or something else?

    I opened my first one ~5 days ago. Didn’t even get to the identity questions — got the error right after my personal info

    Any tips appreciated

      Unfortunately there appears to be some red flag with your application which their software is catching.
      Only way is to open the account in person at a branch.
      Also, request your CHEXsystems report to find out if there is something which can be corrected/disputed.

    Damn.. Resident Aliens without Green Card cannot apply online. Does anyone know if we can apply an out of state application via phone and still eligible for bonus?

      AFAIK anyone who is a “US Person” can apply (which means if you live in US and pay taxes).
      We had similar discussion in BMO Harris thread and in the end BMO Harris agreed that as long as you live in US, has a SS# and pay taxes you can apply.
      Just truthfully put “not available” or something similar depending on your immigration status in the GC box.

      Disclaimer: I am not an expert in these matters and do what you feel is right and/or take expert advice before proceeding..

        Thank you MarcoPolo! Well I am a US person and have been paying taxed for few years now. I did go through BMO Harris thread and based on the discussion started filling up M&T application, but at the end it asked Citizenship status and when I selected Resident Alien it asked me Permanent Resident Card # and Exp date which I don’t have. Well things worked with BMO as it did not specifically ask Permanent Card details.

            In their FAQ-

            Q – Can I open an account online if I’m not a U.S. Citizen?
            ​A – You can only apply online if you are a U.S. Citizen or U.S. Resident Alien with a valid U.S. Social Security Number or Taxpayer Identification Number.

            So their FAQ allows all US residents w/ SSN or ITIN to open account online but in the account opening form they ask for permanent resident number. Seems contradictory.

            Thank you Monty for the tip.. well I tried to apply yesterday with “WorkVisaWithoutGC” in Permanent Resident Card # and was denied. “We are sorry, based on the information provided we are unable to open your account.” I think I messed up with them, I should have waited for few days to see this tip coming.. Now if I want to apply again do I need to wait for some specific days before I can retry? I will also call them on Monday to see what was the reason for denial.

            Well, I called and rep told me, “We couldn’t open probably because you are out of our footprints, everything else looks fine”. To be honest I don’t believe them 🙂
            May be I can try with EAC/WAC# in GC field as done by the Reddit user. If so how long I need to wait before applying again? I was denied Friday.

      No, you don’t. But you should consider leaving the old account open before you apply for the new one. You will get the bonus regardless, and this MAY have the benefit that they don’t perform a Chex inquiry with your application. It WILL have the added benefit that you can move funds between your accounts in order to keep them fee-free.

        No on the Chex, in fact M&T is known to double up on Chex hits. 2 per application. I, like many, have multiple accounts with the bank and they hit my Chex twice for each new account despite already having accounts with them. Some has a theory that funding via ACH is what causes the 2nd hit so I’ve selected funding by mail in check and will see how it turns out on my Chex.

          You don’t actually have to mail a check when selecting that option too.

          After hearing about that theory, for my next seven accounts I just did mail by check but never actually sent anything. Haven’t had any issues.

    Also, if using same codes (I know YMMV), how long do you wait for before reusing the code.

      Looks like they’ve cracked down on new accounts — I opened one two weeks ago and have not been able to open another.

      Reading on r/churning, lots of folks got the same error message — supposedly need a 30 day cool down period before applying again

    Has anyone experienced the bonus not posting quickly? My deposits cleared on 7/6/17 and 7/7/17 for my wife and I. I opened up two accounts each, one with each promo code that is still active. I used PayPal transfers/withdraws to bank account. All deposits posted on either 7/6 or 7/7 and are labeled as PAYPAL TRANSFER. I have no issue waiting longer but it seems everyone is posting that their bonus posted the same day as their initial deposits. I transferred $105 from PayPal to each account. I hope that PayPal still works as a qualifying DD/Transfer.

            I’ve seen 2 people state they have recycled a code, but they never came back to verify any follow up questions. Earlier DPs suggested that M&T was not approving as many applications and that 30 days cool off between applications is suggested. Next week will be 30 days since my first application, then I can try it again and “be the DP I want to see in the world”

    Just entered my zip code to get ’email coupon’, got message:

    “This offer is not available in your region”

    Does it mean that I can’t apply? Or should I just use QC to apply without worry about receiving emailed coupon?

      If outside the service area you will have to use a qualifying zip on their homepage to go through to the application portal. Once there you can enter your actual zip and other details without problems.

          No physical coupon is needed. Go to and find their checking account page. Enter QC when you start to enroll online, there is a field for promotional codes. Any account type will work for the codes, but EZ Choice is the best one.

          Again, after taking this first hurdle you can enter your actual zip code. As in any online channel account opening, be ready for the verification questions at the end of the process.

      You can send SM and request for your full account number. That’s what I did in the past and received it the next day. Other option is to DL the app and see if the 2nd account is listed there, where you can just click it and it’ll show the full account number.

        You have to wait for the account number to be delivered to you via snail mail. Then you can enroll in online banking using that account number

      After you have your first all set, any new accounts will show up on the Sunday after. I have opened new accounts as late in the week as Thursday and they show up on Sunday.

    M&T BANK just called me said – “thanks for opening 3 accounts……. any issues do you have?” I said “no”! i opened these accounts 2 weeks ago and didn’t yet make any deposits….he asked “are you going to do DD?”, I said “yes”. “that’s it” call ended.
    1. do they monitor the accounts? now I’m concerned – hope they don’t – because almost no one here have real DD into the accounts…

    M&T get info from ChexSystem (Hard Pull) then if you fund account with Direct Deposit then it’s another (Hard Pull), and also they request from Nexis Lexis (non-derogatory info – under additional information)
    M&T in my case also didn’t specify apartment number in my address…. on record with ChexSystem so incomplete thus incorrect address!

They won’t send me the email because it says im outside of their area. I even live within one of the selected states (WV), but I don’t live very close to a branch.       Brian, don’t go through that webpage, I had the same issue. All you have to do is go to the main page on the M&T website and go to open a checking account and input the code on the first page of the application (I believe). I have used QC and QD successfully so far.

    Is it true that if you open your new m&t account after business hours or on weekends, it won’t show your account number immediately at the confirmation page (and thus you’ll have to get it in snail mail)? Just curious because this happened to me twice and I’m not sure if it’s me or their business hours.

      I opened 7 days ago and it still doesn’t show up – I think it should show up a bit later! Moreover, I never ever got any account numbers via mail (have 5 accounts) – they told me they don’t mail it (New York). I always save account number in the end of application, to make DD. They said only stop by at local branch and get the number. I you don’t see the account – why you need number? Can you add account manually?

      When the account# didn’t show up for me, I waited till the new account was added to my existing log in (one day or may be two?) and I wrote internal mail (from the account you trying to figure out the number) to customer service: I mailed them *Hi* for example.
      The trick is to go back and see the mail you just wrote and your full account number will be shown. I am pretty sure I read this trick somewhere on DoC’s forums.

        Another couple tricks to find your account number once they’ve shown online:
        -in the app click on the account and click “more info” button on the upper right (I couldn’t get this to work until I updated the M&T app on my iPhone and then it showed)
        -do a transfer from another M&T account and it should show the account number in the history

    Haven’t been able to sign him up for online banking… we keep getting the following error: “We are unable to complete your enrollment. We’re sorry for the inconvenience. For assistance please call M&T Online Customer Service at 1-800-790-9130 (Mon-Fri 8am-9pm, Sat-Sun 9am-5pm ET).”

    Anyone know why he can’t sign up for an online account?? Could it simply be because he opened the account after 10pm EST on Friday evening? Don’t want to do an ACH push for DD bonus until he has online access… 🙂

      Give it 2 weeks from applying. Also, was the funding pulled from the PNC account? I once had an M&T account approved but it never showed in online banking and initial funding was never pulled, in short the account was “approved” but never opened. After that I was blocked from opening M&T accounts for a while.

        For my account opened on 8/9 the PNC account was debited on 8/11.

        For my husband’s account opened on 8/11 the PNC account hasn’t been debited yet (nothing showing as pending either).

        Re: 2 weeks, do you mean wait 2 weeks and try to register online again, or wait 2 weeks before calling, or something else?

          I just meant wait 2 weeks from the application date before contacting the bank about being unable to login because I’ve had accounts take a week and a half to open with M&T. If his account isn’t opened, there isn’t anything for his online banking to link to so he won’t be able to set it up ever.

          He should receive something in the mail from M&T if the account was opened successfully, and you’ll see the money taken from your PNC account. If the account hasn’t been opened it will be up to you to decide if it’s worth contacting M&T over. (I’m assuming this is the first account for both of you but before contacting M&T consider: are you in their service area? if so, you have a legit reason to be opening an account and should be fine having customer service research into what happened.)         FYI, we called M&T on 8/21. Turns out chrome auto-filled his DOB as my DOB during the application process (somehow that wasn’t caught by their identity verification system?!) and it wouldn’t let us create the online account using his DOB. It worked using my DOB – now we just have to go to a branch with his driver’s license at some point. Oops!

        Followup question, in case you might know the answer: if you open a 2nd account is it supposed to show up in your online account? It forced me to create a new user id when I opened a 2nd checking account…

          New accounts usually auto-populate in your online account but imho it can take a week and a half to show up. Yikes about that DOB! I’m in CA so that would’ve been a death sentence to M&T churning. Hope it turns out better for you!!

      Ok, had same issue! I thought my debit card didn’t work or pin – error message, they sent new card and pin, and same issue, probably malfunction withing the account or something didn’t allow me to sign up, I called them 3 times tried to fix it – didn’t get any help! Then I just used my account number to sign up!

      Yes, its pretty widely reported here and where i got the info as well. Have 7 accounts. I just transfer $1 between them all every two weeks. Fee charged and refunded every month. IMO, much less hassle keeping it internal M&T than pushing external ACH.
