[Expired] AmEx Offers: Athletic Subscription $1 Off $1 (Free Subscription)

The Offer

Direct Link to offer for third-party cards or  check your American Express login to find the following AmEx Offer:

  • Get a $1 statement credit by using your enrolled eligible Card to make a single purchase of $1 or more online at theathletic.com by 9/30/2022. Limit of 6 statement credits (total of $6).

The Fine Print

  • Offer valid online only for subscriptions purchased at US website theathletic.com.
  • Valid only on purchases made in US dollars.
  • Qualifying charges must post to your account before the campaign end date in order to be considered eligible. If you are a new customer receiving a free trial, you may not be charged until the free trial period has lapsed.
  • Please note if you purchase a subscription, unless you notify the merchant that you want to pause, cancel, or that you do not want to auto renew, your subscription will automatically renew for another subscription period (subject to applicable law) of equal length (for example monthly, or annually). This means that the merchant will collect the then-applicable subscription fee and any taxes by charging a credit card the merchant has on record for you without notifying you, unless notification is required by applicable law.

Our Verdict

You can signup for The Athletic at this link for a trial $1/month subscription for six months. After the $1 Amex credit it’ll end up entirely free. The AmEx Offer seems to end on September 30th, so you can only really get at most 4 months free if you signup today.

Just remember to cancel before the regular monthly fee kicks in. Also, don’t use Paypal since it might not trigger the AmEx Offer credit.

I don’t think you can use the Amex Connect site to signup for a regular Amex card, only for 3rd party Amex cards. Hopefully you can find the offer within your regular AmEx Offers on your Amex card, no luck for me.

Note, you might already have access to The Athletic: if you use the Amex Platinum entertainment credit for subscribing to The New York Times, you get The Athletic added as part of the All Access subscription.

If at all on the fence about the quality of the subscription, go for it. The trial is definitely worth it (in my opinion) if you’re looking for a new source of sports writing.

The coverage is pretty broad and includes national teams, sports business and lots of features. In my experience, the Android app is pretty good; the mobile web view is really clean.

In the past, letting your subscription lapse could lead to increasingly useful offers to resubscribe, over roughly a month’s time. Hopefully this will still be the case following the NYT acquisition.

You can now link your NYT and Athletic accounts with the NYT subscription carrying over.

So does this mean the $20 Entertainment credit includes The Athletic when you link it to your NYT Account? I currently pay $17/month for NYT. Might be paying too much. Haven’t had time to really look into it.

Need to make sure your subscription is “All Access”. The regular rate is $25/mo for “All Access”, and I see $17/mo for the Basic, which does not include it. You can bring the rate down. If you try to cancel online, it might offer you a one year discount rate. Mine was coming up and when I checked, was able to get it to $4/mo (well per 4 weeks with their billing).
