Bank of America AAA Member Rewards Visa Credit Card Review, 3.75x Travel and Added Redemption Option

Update 8/18/22: Card was now sold off to Comenity and has an entirely new rewards structure.

Update 6/21/21: Card now comes with a $200 bonus. Hat tip to US Credit Card Guide

AAA offers various credit cards to their members, some are U.S Bank cards and some Bank of America cards. Today we’ll take a quick look at the AAA Member Rewards Visa card issued by Bank of America. The card has been around for many years, and readers recently brought out a couple of interesting aspects of the card.

AAA Member Rewards Visa

Direct Link

Card earns the following rates:

  • 3x (3% cash back) on travel and on AAA purchases
  • 2x (2% cash back) on gas, grocery, and drugstores
  • 1x (1% cash back) on everything else

A few other details about the card:

  • No annual fee
  • No foreign transaction fee
  • The card is only available in select areas
  • Reportedly, you can get and use this card even without AAA membership
  • It’s possible to get a 20% bonus when redeeming points for AAA vouchers (10,000 points will get you $120 in vouchers or $100 in cash back)
  • Rail purchases are not included in the travel category.

Interesting Notes

Relationship Bonus

Readers note that this card is eligible for the Bank of America Preferred Rewards program which will give BofA relationship customers better rewards. Apparently, only the base earnings get the Preferred bonus on this card (contrast that with other cards which give the bonus on category earnings as well). Here are the earning rates for the top tier relationship customer:

  • 3.75% on travel and AAA purchases
  • 2.75% on gas, grocery, and drugstores
  • 1.75% everywhere else

Cashing Out BofA Points

Another thing readers note is that this card makes it possible to cash out travel points from the Bank of America Travel Rewards card at one-cent-per-point without having to deal with travel redemption. Simply transfer the points from the Travel Rewards card to the AAA card and then cash them out.

There’s reportedly a grandfathered version of a BofA business card which can also be used to cash out BofA travel points. It used to be possible to do so via the Fidelity card, but that card is now issued by US Bank.

Signup Bonus

The card currently offers a $50 Walmart gift card as a signup bonus. Students are not eligible for the signup bonus.

Our Verdict

The most interesting part is to use the card to cash out BofA travel points, making the card a great combo for someone with the Travel Rewards card which can earn up to 2.6% everywhere for relationship clients. That said, BofA travel redemption category is fairly broad, and most people won’t find it worthwhile getting this card  just for this reason.

The other interesting thing is the 3.75% earnings rate on travel. This, too, isn’t spectacular being that many cards have travel as a bonus category, and a lot of people will value, for example, 3x Ultimate Rewards from CSR more than 3.75% cash. Further, the upcoming BofA premium card will offer 3.5% on travel for relationship clients, just .25% less than this card.

Anyone able to access their Comenity account for this card yet? Activated and registered and now it tells me that I have an existing account, won’t let me “forget my username or password” (says information doesn’t match), and won’t let me log in with credentials I created.

Cancelled the account. Good luck to the rest of you with Comenity.

Recently, at my local AAA branch office, I have signed up with an insurance agent for my auto & home insurance. At that time, I asked the agent if I can pay the insurance premium with the AAA Branch Voucher from redemption of rewards of the BofA AAA Member Rewards Visa Signature Card. They consulted with other staff at the AAA office and suggested me to buy the AAA MemberPay Visa Prepaid Card saying it can be used to reload with the funds from the AAA Branch Voucher. YMMV. P.S.: Deadline for reload of visa prepaid card at the AAA clubs is September 30, 2022.

I have been waiting for the latest statement cycle to redeem the $700 AAA Branch Voucher. The rewards points were accumulated by transferring the points from two other BofA rewards points credit cards, viz., TR (P1), and PR (P2) credit cards. Since I had a total of 40000 AAA rewards points needing another 10000 points to redeem as a $700 branch voucher — (before the latest statement cycle ended) I decided to make purchases in the United TravelBank to hit this mark. The BofA AAA credit card is now headed to the shredder and I am awaiting the mailing of the $700 AAA Branch Voucher from BofA.

Note: I received a letter from MetaBank, the issuer of AAA MemberPay Visa Prepaid Card, informing that AAA Clubs will not accept reloads effective September 30, 2022.

Not sure if it’s just Southern California, but I was told they don’t have prepaid visas anymore.

Toddo The AAA branch in my neighborhood (in Ohio) also does not sell new AAA prepaid visa cards anymore. But if you have bought one earlier that you can use to reload at the AAA branch until September 30, 2022.

Today, I reloaded my AAA MemberPay Visa Prepaid Card with $1,400 from 2x$700 AAA branch vouchers at a AAA branch. I had a total of 2×50,000 AAA rewards points that were accumulated from SUB (PR), travel (AAA), and non-category (TR) purchases during the last couple of years. All those points were redeemed with 40% bonus (Sigh). I will miss this wonderful redemption opportunity in future. RIP. There are many AAA branches in my region.

Got a letter that Comenity Capital Bank bought this product line from BofA effective October 9:

5% gas and electric charging stations
3% grocery store, restaurant, travel, AAA
1% everything else

Disappointing as I use this card for 5.25% on travel with BofA Preferred Rewards

I don’t have BofA Preferred Rewards, though.

It appears the minimum redemption amount is reduced to $5 from $50, so that’s a huge plus. The categories actually don’t look too bad, although many people probably have them covered already with other cards. But there’s the loss of the BofA Rewards program for some, of course.

Bonus value for redeeming at AAA clubs is gutted: now 5% extra vice 10-40% previously. Never used that, myself.

RIP. Today, I received a mail from Comenity informing that it is taking over the AAA credit card from BofA in October 2022. The reward structure will change to worse …

While this AAA card was gone from the BoA website for some time, it had still been available on the AAA website. But I noticed just now that it has also gone from the AAA website. Actually the AAA website describes its features for existing cardholders, but there is no way to apply for it.

“Rail purchases are not included in the travel category.” Not so!

(f) Rail Transactions (representing Commuter Transport/Ferries & Passenger Railways). Is defined in the 3 point category in the rewards terms.

The title and content of this post really should be updated to reflect the current realities of this card, which is 5.25% on travel/AAA purchases, rather than the outdated 3.75%

Last month, I spent $126.18 on Airfare

126.18 base
252.36 other bonus
283.91 preferred rewards bonus
662.45 total

I transfer the points from the AAA card to my Premium Rewards card so that it just pools together for auto-redemption since I don’t put a ton of spend on the AAA card.

I’m thinking about applying for this card and have a question. Could you help me as a current cardholder? On AAA website http://www.aaa.com/aaa_travel/financial/credit-card.html it says “rewards
worth up to 40% more than cash when you redeem for eligible AAA purchases, such as membership fees, travel and more”. How does the redemption work? Is it like you make a transaction on AAA first then use the points to reimburse the transaction? Thanks.
