Avoiding Fees

The monthly fees will vary slightly based on what state your living in. We suggest checking this before choosing your account. Most people will be best off going for the Bright Banking account and then using one of the fee waivers, unless you’re a student or senior in which case those accounts will be the best option.

BB&T Bright Banking® $10 monthly

You can avoid the monthly fee on this account if you meet any of the following requirements:

  • Receive $500 or more in direct deposits
  • Have an average monthly balance of $1,500 or more
  • Have $6,000 or more in combined deposits in checking, savings, Money Rate Savings, Investor’s Deposit Accounts
  • Have an outstanding personal mortgage with BB&T

BB&T Fundamentals Checking $5 monthly

It’s not possible to get this monthly fee waived.

BB&T Identity Protection® Checking $6 monthly

It’s not possible to get this monthly fee waived. If you want free identity theft insurance we suggest looking at Credit Sesame (also gives you access to a free FAKO credit score).

BB&T Student Banking $0 monthly

This account does not have a monthly charge if you choose to receive paperless statements. If you choose to receive paper statements you’ll need to pay a monthly fee of $3. You must be under 23 and a student to be eligible for this account.

Senior Checking $8 Monthly

You can avoid the monthly fee on this account if you meet any of the following requirements:

  • Receive $500 or more in direct deposits
  • Have an average monthly balance of $1,000 or more
  • Have $6,000 or more in combined deposits in checking, savings, Money Rate Savings, Investor’s Deposit Accounts
  • Have an outstanding personal mortgage with BB&T

Elite Gold $30 Monthly

You can avoid the monthly fee on this account if you meet any of the following requirements:

  • $25,000 combined deposit balance in checking, savings, CDs, IRAs, Money Rate Savings, Investor’s Deposit Account, or investments through BB&T Investment Services, Inc.
  • $25,000 combined outstanding balance in retail loans and lines of credit3
  • $150,000 BB&T personal mortgage loan balance

Early Account Termination Fee $25

All accounts come with a $25 early account closure fee if you close them within 180 days of account opening.

Our Verdict

I don’t like the fact that this is open to the first 3,500 people that use the code only. It isn’t clear if they will remove the landing page when they hit this number or not. I think you should be safe to do this promo and get the bonus, but I’d probably do it sooner rather than later. Zelle is basically just a way to send money to friends that is free and instant, it used to be called Clearxchange you can read more about it here. Given that it’s really easy to meet the bonus requirements and it isn’t that difficult to keep the account fee fee. Because of that I will be adding it to our list of the best checking bonuses. They also have a business bonus for $300, it’s supposed to be targeted but readers are reporting this isn’t being enforced.

Big thanks to reader, Alex who let us know. Learn how to find bonuses and contribute to the site here.

Seemed like this would be too much hassle, but there’s a fee-free account option in my area. No credit card funding available.

Alex
Alex

Same here, but if you check the DOC datapoints, it states debit only at the end, but will accept a credit card. Successfully funded w/ ThankYou Preferred.

David

I see a $50 bonus for refferals also (up to $250). That ought to make this more worthwhile.

Anthony

Also had a Back to Basics account offered in my area (Southeast PA) which has no fees associated with it.

I think you meant “free and instant” instead of “fee and instant”

As always, thanks for finding more free money for me!!

got similar offer mail from US Bank for $
225 bonus ($75 each month when u make $25 of Zelle Trsnfer.. up to 3 months). I think it is targeted one for US Bank credit card holders.

Painlessly opened, funded with CC, transferred in funds from another Zelle account, and immediately sent 2x outbound Zelles. Time to sit back and wait!

KP

Just sent mine this morning. Wonder how long it will take for bonus to hit. I’ll just sit here and wait patiently along with you!

I’ve had problems in the past signing up for Zelle with banks. It seems with every bank I had to set up a new Zelle account with a new email address since they detected my old account with the other bank. Is this the same?

Ben
Ben

Only one email address can be associated with one Zelle account (i.e., you’ll need to use a “fresh” non-Zelled email for BB&T.)

I just opened the account and I see an admin hold on my 250 cc transfer? do you guys see the same?

Ben
Ben

Currently have the hold as well, I’m sure it’ll disappear in a few days. I was still able to transfer funds in and out using Zelle

Ken

Same thing happened with my Biz account. I sent a SM and they said new accounts have holds placed on new funds. My hold has already gone away.

I mean keeping $1,500 tied up for 6 months to avoid fees.. doesn’t really make this deal seem worthwhile. Plus, we also have no way of knowing whether the 3,500 sign-u[p limit on this promo code has been reached or not.

I tempted to bite because I love $100 of free money. But it seems like a hassle and there are unknown factors that could prevent us from getting paid.

Alex
Alex

Fair, although the fee piece is avoidable if you can DD $500 a month and then immediately transfer it out.

That’s making a guaranteed 14% APY on a 1400 investment (presuming you get the $100 reasonably quickly and are only then investing 1400 of your own money) tied up over 6 mo. What kind of investment do you favor that is more worthwhile?

ChaseJuggler
ChaseJuggler

I just chose to pay the $5 monthly fee and end up with a net gain of $70ish after the $30 loss. Hopefully that $1500 can earn more than $30 by having it invested for those 6 months.

For the number crunchers, it would be a guaranteed APY of 4% by keeping $1500 in there for 6 months to save $30.

KP
KP

What is the formula you used to figure that out.

ChaseJuggler
ChaseJuggler

30/1500 = 2% return in 6 months. That’s the same as a 4% return in 12 months.

too much hassle, zelle is very crappy and a great way to be hacked

MoreSun

Hacked is pretty strong language and we’re all very serious about our bank bonuses and transfers around. Please explain.

It was very easy to do this as I’d just done the biz app, it used same info, I bit. It wouldn’t let me fund w/CC tho, even when using the “debit card” option. I realized after I transferred $ in from biz that maybe it was bc I used a biz card (Spark). They had a fee-free option in PA. Routing & account # given right away. You can design your own debit card for free woooo

Re: “Must be first BB&T retail checking account in your household.”

This excerpt is concerning as well. Does this mean first ever?

Ae

That is my question as well – I have had a bb&t account in the past but my wife has not… too many wiggle outs here for me.

Trippy

I see a Back to Basics fee free option too. Is it not mentioned because its not in all the states?

Bobo
Bobo

Word of warning — I was not able to use any of my CC to fund this. Not my CSR, not my Citi AA, not my InkCash, so I think BB&T may have closed this CC loophole. After 3 attempts, they only allow you to mail in a check to open an account. 🙁

Svy
Svy

I did not see an option for using a CC. I enter my Fidelity Visa as debit and got an error. I was thinking that the CC option was not available in my state of VA?

Gadget
Gadget

It used to work (in VA), as of a few months ago. Maybe they closed the loophole, or picky about the card co. I don’t recall what I used in the past – I think Chase? But, things do change…

Nacho
Nacho

Did they still provide you with an account number, or will they wait for you to send in the check?

Jenn

Chase blocked my CSR for fraud at first, but after confirming it was not fraud I was able to fund with my CSR

Drew Hanessian
Drew Hanessian

I was able to use my USAA Visa (2.5% cashback).

KP
KP

I was able to fund $250 with CSP on 2/4/18. So I find this to be quite odd.

Bobo
Bobo

Crap — never mind. What happened was that both CSR and Citi cards flagged me for fraud alerts. If I’d said these were valid transactions, they both would’ve gone through. My bad for not checking my email.

I’ll save my chexsystem inquiry for some real cash. I command $150 or more. Good deal for those who are new to the checking bonus game. Good way to get your feet wet.

exactly my CHEX inquiries are now worth at least $150 lol I wouldn’t give it up for any less

meed18

I’m way past my CHEX inquiries being worth anything anymore thanks to M&T. Any bank that is CHEX sensitive wouldn’t give me the time of day. How few do you guys have?

International student, non-resident alien. Been rejected immediately. Cannot open a student account for this deal…

Did you try opening over the phone or in branch?

I tried online.

This is what it says on their website: Non-resident alien clients must also submit a valid Form W-8, NRA Certification Statement and a copy of their passport to BB&T by the time the account is reviewed for incentive eligibility as described above.
