The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • BBVA Compass is offering a bonus of $200 when you open a new checking account and complete the following requirements :
    • Receive a direct deposit of at least $300 within 60 days of account opening

The Fine Print

  • You must be a new BBVA Compass consumer checking customer who has not had a BBVA Compass consumer checking account open within the last 90 days or closed due to negative balance to be eligible for the bonus.
  • Eligible accounts include BBVA Compass ClearChoice Interest Checking, BBVA Compass ClearChoice Free Checking, Clearconnect Checking, and Easy Checking.
  • Eligible accounts for residents of AL, AZ, CA, CO, FL, NM, TX include BBVA Compass ClearChoice Free Checking, BBVA Compass ClearChoice Interest Checking, ClearConnect Checking, and Easy Checking.
  • Only BBVA Compass ClearChoice Interest Checking and ClearConnect Checking are eligible accounts for residents of all other states.
  • Offer is valid for accounts opened in branch, online, or by phone
  • Within sixty (60) days of account opening, at least one electronic direct deposit from an unrelated 3rd party (e.g. your employer or a government agency) in the amount of at least $300 must post to the new checking account.
  • The $200 cash bonus will be deposited into the new checking account within 60 days of meeting the bonus requirements described above. The account must be open with a positive balance at the time the bonus is deposited.
  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

If you live in AL, AZ, CA, CO, FL NM or TX then the best account to open is the BBVA Compass ClearChoice Free Checking as this has no monthly fees to worry about. Otherwise open the Clearconnect checking account which also has no monthly fees to worry about. There is a $3 fee on ClearConnect for paper statements, so make sure you opt for paperless statements.

Early Account Termination Fee

Account needs to be kept open for 12 months otherwise they reserve the right to deduct the bonus.

Our Verdict

Bonus definitely worth doing, they have had lots of $200 bonuses recently but they have required going in branch in specific states. This is the first one that can be done nationwide and is also available online. Because of that I will be adding it to our list of the best checking account sign up bonuses. It’s always nice to have a credit card funding available as well, but people have reported a lot of issues with this in the past. As always share your experiences in the comments below.

Big thanks to readers Maximillian W & Elena who let us know. Learn how to find bonuses and contribute to the site here.

  1. Josh says:

$5000 has been the credit card funding limit in the past, is it only $300 specific with this deal?

    • JS says:

The Clear Connect just allowed me to fund an account with $5,000 via credit card.

      • L T says:

Which card did you use, please? Useful for datapoints on what works 🙂

        • JS says:

I lowered my CA limit on my CFU and then funded the account.

The wording of the email was:
“You recently initiated a request to make an initial deposit to your new account(s) with $5,000.00 from Visa, Credit Card. Unfortunately, we were unable to fund your new account(s) using your source account.”

      • Gerhardt says:

I just funded Savings ($500 daily or $25 waiver) and Checking with $5,000 each with BOA Premium Rewards. Account was approved, but both accounts show $0 balance and BOA shows no purchase either. CA is $1.4K. Did you see any of the amounts go pending?

        • Ryan says:

Check your email if they were able to fund the account with the CC. I tried using Premium rewards with my CA lower than my funding and it got denied.

          • Gerhardt says:

I haven’t gotten an email about funding specifically, but did receive “Congratulations! Your application has been approved and your new BBVA Compass ClearChoice Free Checking account is open. Here’s what you need to know now:
When will my deposit* be credited to my account? Credit or Debit card: 2-3 days”

            Hoping for the best!

        • Matt says:

Same. No pending amounts on my credit card (Chase) and $0 in account. Very confusing.

          • marvin says:

Im in same boat. funded with Bofa Premium rewards, no pending on card, 0 balance on checking. hopefully it shows up. needed it to meet my spending!

      • Thanks, will update post.

      • JS says:

Update: I just got an email that my CC funding didn’t go through.

        • kirk says:

awww! care to share some more info? what card? what was the wording?

that was rather a quick ‘card funding declined’ email.

        • MP says:

Same here. No pending charges or fraud alerts from Chase on CFU. I was rather close to my credit limit with the funding, though. Also, the email is saying I should mail a check for the specified amount to them, I imagine this is more of a suggestion than a requirement. BBVA’s call centers are closed right now, else I’d be working on fixing this.

  2. kevin says:

Great bonus! It says maximum credit card funding is $5000 with Visa Debit Card, MasterCard Debit Card or Visa Credit Card

    • kirk says:

+ also states, BBVA Compass does not accept pre-paid or business cards for funding.
*funds generally available in your new account within 48 hrs.

      welcome email shows this:
“When will my deposit* be credited to my account? Credit or Debit card: 2-3 days
Transfer from external account: 2-3 days
Mailing a check: Generally within 5 days of receiving your check”

  3. PG says:

Had serious trouble with the CC funding. Same screen just kept refreshing, but finally went to the message “we are reviewing your application” after trying with the 3rd cc. Tried different amounts and this time it was for $5k.

  4. Duke I. says:

I have my mortgage with BBVA. I opened a checking account to get mortgage rate reduced. After a year, I requested to have the checking account closed in 2016. Today the account is still open with 13 cents despite my requesting it to be closed twice.

BBVA customer service center seems to be understaffed. Expect a long wait time if you ever need to call them. If you send a message online it take them at least 7 days to respond.

  5. Ender says:

What CC did you guys used? From DPs it looks like chase code it as purchase. So I guess Citi and BOA?

  6. Tom says:

I have opened about 12 or so checking/savings accounts since February. Even though it’s possible that not all of these banks use ChexSystems, I am a little worried about my ChexSystems report causing problems for this particular opportunity.

Quite interested to hear anyone’s experiences/problems with ChexSystems.

    Thanks all…

    • Jenn says:

I’ve opened about 30+ accounts YTD and was approved

      • Tom says:

        Thanks Jenn!

Also — almost forgot — I have all 3 major credit reporting agency accounts frozen right now.

Anyone know which agency they use for the pull?

    • Duke I says:

I opened 12 checking accounts since early October. I requested a copy of my Chexsytems report and there’s nothing negative in it. I need to spend $3000 on my NFCU card to get the $250 bonus. So I’m going to try to open a 2nd checking account with BBVA. I probably won’t get the bonus since they never closed my other checking account that was opened in 2015 and was supposed to be closed in 2016.

  7. Andrew says:

Definitely not nationwide. Try entering Wisconsin in the application and see what happens.

  8. becoo says:

Hmm..based on DJ’s comment in the AZ-specific promo, he/she got a hard pull:

Can anyone else vouch for soft or hard pull? Thanks!

  9. Jenn says:

Tried my Fifth Third Credit Card to fund and got declined. So I used a Visa Gift Card and that went through. Also called to confirm you don’t need to enter a promo code in the application

  10. olympia says:

Anyone try a MC CC? Looking at double cash….

  11. Vince says:

You can leave the promocode part empty then?

  12. Jon says:

Funded both Checking and Savings with $5k each on CFU (cash advance set to $20 on each). Accounts are both open, however, no charges on my card yet.

  13. becoo says:

Let me try this again..earlier comment with a link didn’t make it through. Comment 502282 from the earlier AZ-specific BBVA bonus reported “Just opened up a new account and got a hard pull on Experian” Can anyone else confirm soft or hard inquiry? Thanks!

  14. L T says:

Tried but got a message that said they could not verify my identity. Called in and they mentioned it would only be able to opened in branch and not over the phone. Haven’t done that many bank accounts lately, maybe ~8 this year and no reports frozen, so not sure why it didn’t work out.

    • Timmy says:

I’m wondering.. did you fund the account and if so was the money taken even after they were unsuccessful in opening?

    • Doodums says:

i got the same message. i chose the Free checking and i’m in California. Player 2 got the same message. no history with BBVA Compass. really disappointed as this was a good way to meet my min spend.

this error comes up after hitting next (so before CC funding).

  15. olympia says:

I used CNB Crysal Infinite – there’s a current promo thatmight be targeted – 10,000 bonus points for $5k spend between 10/15/17 and 1/15/18.

  16. Don says:

I think you have the Direct deposit required section mixed up with CC funding section.

  17. olympia says:

Anybody going to roll the dice and try for more than one per household?

  18. Samwise says:

Has anybody had success with Amex Serve for the direct deposit?
Checked the data points on the master page and there weren’t any for Serve.

  19. KK says:

Can someone explain the $5k funding with a debit card? How does this fit into the fine print “Within sixty (60) days of account opening, at least one electronic direct deposit from an unrelated 3rd party (e.g. your employer or a government agency) in the amount of at least $300 must post to the new checking account.”

  20. Jim says:

Is it possible to use two different cards to fund the checking and savings accounts?

    • Matt says:

I don’t think so. I’m actually glad you couldn’t, because the $5K is seemingly in limbo for everyone. I’m holding off on the savings account until that becomes clear (you can apply separately).

  21. jz says:

The link for DD goes to CC funding.

  22. Mark says:

My $5k BoA Travel Rewards Card charge was accepted but I received this notice. I applied for ClearConnect Checking and I live in Massachusetts.

“Thank you for your application. Your application is currently under review. A BBVA Compass representative will be contacting you (usually within 24-48 hours) to discuss the application and request any additional information that may be needed.”

    • David says:

I just applied this morning and funded the initial deposit with my BoA Premium Rewards card for 3k, then received the same “application under review” message. For the record, I live in NJ and applied for the ClearConnect Checking as well.

What was end result of your application? Approved? Did the CC charge go through without a hiccup?

      Thanks in advance.

      • james says:

Hi did the cc charge post yet on boa and did it get approved

        • David says:

No charge or pending charge yet. When I called BBVA on Friday afternoon, the rep said that he didn’t see anything wrong with my app, but BBVA had a recent influx of online applications, so it would take 2-3 business days to review/approve my checking account app. Hopefully then the charge will post successfully to BoA.

  23. Naga says:

There is a maximum of one (1) bonus per household …. condition as well on the landing page …any DP on this? …

  24. Tom says:

Application approved online, no problems, even though all 3 of my credit reporting agency accounts are frozen. Slightly surprised — I assume a soft pull should have failed if these accounts are frozen?

  25. When posting credit card datapoints, please only post if your account has actually been charged and then let us know if it shows up as a cash advance/purchase. Also it’s quite pointless asking for datapoints on things like multiple bonuses per household, usually people will just share these datapoints if they have them. Asking the same questions over and over just clutters the thread and makes actual information more difficult to find.

  26. Justin says:

“Your application is currently under review. A BBVA Compass representative will be contacting you (usually within 24-48 hours) to discuss the application and request any additional information that may be needed.”

My Chex is obliterated with inquiries. Will follow up when I hear more.

  27. Phil says:

BOA declined the charge- incorrectly identified it as suspicious activity. I’m going to try to get them to run it again after verifying

    • Phil says:

FYI BBVA will NOT re-run the credit card if it is declined

      • marv says:

someone on reddit said the csr told him to just put in another application to fund it. I tempted to try this too because Bofa declined the charge on a fraud alert

      • TD says:

Checking and savings opened and instantly approved online. Tried to fund with BOA Travel Rewards – triggered BOA fraud alert text message and BOA declined. I replied with approval, and BOA said OK, try again. But no way to try again. 45 minutes on phone this morning confirmed that reps – none in any department – can fund with a credit card. Online only, and only during initial application process. Of course, then I wouldn’t be a new customer anymore and I wouldn’t get the checking bonus.

  28. Vijay says:

I just successfully opened the checking account with $5000 CSP CC and it went through and the account number showed up instantly. I like their website and the navigation’s they offered. I felt like I’m in Mars accessing their website. I plan to continue to bank with them just for their website experience.

  29. anthonyjh21 says:

Was instantly approved and funded with $5k. I’m sure I have a ton of chexsystem and credit inquiries so it leads me to believe they’re not inquiry sensitive. I do have the amex card with them though and I’m in California so maybe that helps.

  30. ppsh says:

I’m skeptical that it’s a soft pull. Reading between the lines, those reporting soft pull seemed to almost all had account relationship with BBVA previously, which might be why it went “soft” on them the second time around.

Also, if Robinhood doesn’t qualify, other brokerage houses seem likely in the same boat. The DPs seem to suggest BBVA may have made a change disqualifying EFT/ACH from brokerage houses + Paypal between Aug and Oct 2017, such that nothing short of real DD would trigger the bogus.

  31. eclipsor says:

anyone else having issues funding with citi? wont accept any amount, tried 500-3k while on the phone with citi and it won’t go through at all. both above and below my cash advance limit with them, really annoying

  32. Rab says:

Looks like only US citizens can apply online?

  33. Matt says:

Got the card declined email. I’m going to call tomorrow to see if they can run it again. Will update with a DP.

  34. Chris says:

What counts as direct deposit for this bank?

  35. JuicyJosh says:

BBVA has recently run state specific promos for this same $200. When I completed FL bonus I referred to the CA promo. Check these for relevant DPs.

    CA/CO –

    FL/AL –

    AZ –

  36. Adam says:

Is there a savings bonus currently active as well w/BBVA? That’d be awesome to do at the same time. You know sweeten the deal a bit, instead of just opening up a savings acct merely for CC funding.

  37. Cesar says:

I wasn’t able to fund with my Citi Thank You Premier. Can confirm that Master Card credit card funding is now allowed.

I was however able to fund with $5,000 on my Bank of America Rewards card. I received instant approval for the Free Clear Choice checking.

Should be an easy bonus. Thanks for the tip!

  38. Matt says:

I was able to find $5,000 using USAA Limitless cashback 2.5% Card. I did go on the app first and notify them of a 5,000 charge. It now shows as pending.

    • Justin says:

Thanks! The DP I was looking for.

      • Justin says:

My timeline (USAA, and cash rewards confirmed posting)

        Nov 10: Applied
Nov 10: About an hour later emails came for cc funding (and I think around that time the pending auths showed up on USAA – def wasn’t immediate
Nov 13: Changes went from pending to final
Nov 14: USAA cash rewards show up

    • Josh says:

Please update if/when this posts. USAA won’t set CA to zero, so I’m hesitant to try my Limitless Cashback card…

  39. Shane says:

dp1: Attempted $5k funding with CNB infinite: declined
dp2: $5k funding with Merril visa, successfully funded and got the funding approved email.

    • Shane says:

Oh forgot to mention, the preauth on CNB shows MCC code 6012. Hmm.

      • olympia says:

Hey Shane, did it immediately decline? I got the congrats screen and email with CNB but when I checked CNB’s site I saw that the charge was declined. I’m interested in understanding how you got the opportunity to try funding again. I’d like to replicate your success with the Merrill.

        Thanks for your help.

    • Mark Spivey says:

No idea how you funded with Merril+. I got declined as it was posting as a cash advance.

      • Mark Spivey says:

        Nevermind. I’m a fucking idiot.

I moved addresses recently and didn’t update my info on this card. However, I wasn’t helped by the Merrill rep who said the transaction was declined due to being a cash advance.

    • nathan says:

my CA limit on my merril is 3000,

i funded 5k with my merill and the charge is still pending

im a little worried cuz when i log in online, the cash advance available limit shows 0.. indicating that this charge may be coded as a CA

im hoping that once the charge posts, it will update and show as a regular purchase. Did this happen to you shane?

      • nathan says:

update: the charge finally posted as a purchase, and also stayed pending for a day or two (taking up a total of 10,000 of my avail credit)

        • Melon says:

Thanks for this info. I signed up yesterday for 2x $5000 on my Merrill+ and am a bit concerned because the “pending” transactions are showing up as cash advances even though my CA limit is $4500. Hopefully they turn into regular purchases like your’s did.

My total credit limit is under $20k, so I wonder if there will be any issue with that if the pending and posted transactions stay on the account at the same time. Time will tell

          • Melon says:

Update: The purchases went through and the pending charges are still there as well. My credit limit is under $20k so it’s showing the amount of credit available is $0. I’d be mildly annoyed if I actually used the Merrill+ for any regular spending.

  40. Jay A says:

This language under the “Next” button mid-application has me weary of a hard pull:

Credit Report Use: By clicking the “Continue” button above, you authorize us to obtain and use a consumer credit report and other information about you and your financial condition in order to: (1) verify your identity; (2) determine your eligibility for the account; and (3) offer you enhanced or additional products and services.

Thinking I’ll wait for some fresher data points on this one. Anyone have thoughts on this?

    • Shane says:

I applied around an hour ago. No hard pull alerts yet and I have the usual monitors set up.

      • Jay A says:

That’s good. Did you happen to see that same language on your application? A quick Google took me to Hustler Money Blogs list of soft vs hard and BBVA is listed as having a hard pull, but then again I don’t frequent that blog and can’t speak to their reliability.

  41. Jeff says:

Does the DD have to be $300+ or can it be cumulative (i.e. $200, $100, etc)?

  42. JP says:

hmm. which visa cards you guys using?

    • Vijay says:

I’d recommend all of you to check whether your CC funding has gone thru as CA or purchase. I also just now got an email from BBVA that my CC funding was declined and when I checked with Chase just now, they said BBVA tried to process it thru CA and hence the system denied since I set my CA limit as $100.

  43. payyoutuesday says:

Here is a checking account DP from Reddit that says that BBVA does NOT pull your Chexsystems report and did not perform a hard credit pull. It was a “phone/in branch” application. Not sure if online applications would be handled differently.

Same post has a similar DP for an online savings account application.

  44. John says:

Applied and approved in AL. 15+ Chex in 8 months. Did not enter a promo code, funded $1400 with BofA card. Going to Ally transfer, WF, and Chase for DD. Wish me luck.

  45. ChurningFast says:

Is there anyone here who was approved in a state where BBVA has no branches, in the northeast for example? Just applied in PA, received pending message. Also got an email saying they’ll manually review my app and get back in 24-48 hours. Curious to know if they’re doing this to all out-of-state apps.

  46. Kevin says:

Opened the checking account tonight w/ $5,000 credit card deposit using my BoA Platinum Rewards card. Received confirmation that my opening deposit was processed a few hours after the application was approved.

Your Opening Deposit Has Been Processed
    Item #: xxxxxxxxx
    Amount: $5,000.00
    From account: Visa, Credit Card
    From account number: #####################################xxx
    To account number: ######xxx

My cash credit line is set to $5,400 and it has not been lowered since the temp authorization showed up, so I’m expecting it to post as a purchase.

  47. Superchurn says:

Tried to fund 5k with US Bank Cash+ Visa with CA limit set to 0 (i know, i know, but I’m not currently working on any new Visa cards and don’t have CA limits of 0 on any other visas ), and it didn’t fail. The charge also hasn’t shown up on US Bank’s website yet, so not sure if it’s a CA or purchase yet…will update as soon as known.

I doubt they’re Chex sensitive or maybe not even checking since i’m at 22/12 months, and they didn’t reject me

    Here’s to another easy $200 😀

  48. SamSimon says:

“Only personal cards are allowed.” does it mean card should be on my name? For example, I cannot use girlfriend card?

  49. Joe says:

Chase Freedom Unlimited declined funding. Cash advance limit was set lower than funding, so likely still trying to post as cash advance.

  50. Dustin says:

It means no business cards, in this instance. Generally speaking, they want the name on the account to match the funding source, though.

  51. Noobie Noob says:

This might be a noob question, but how do they charge the Early Account Termination Fee if you fulfill the terms of the bonus, receive the bonus, and then withdrawal the entirety of the account? The way I see it you can:

    -DD $300
    -Receive a $200 bonus within 60 days
-ACH pull $500 from this account to another account.

    Am I missing something? Thanks!

    • Ann says:

      Debt collectors.

      • Noobie Noob says:

        Thanks, Ann!

So I suppose the following sequence is the way to go about it:

        -Open account today 11/7/17
-DD $300 from paycheck on 11/15/17.
-Receive $200 bonus within 60 days.
-ACH pull $500 from this account to another account on 11/8/18 or after.

  52. Bub says:

How soon do you get the account number after signup? Immediately or does it come in the mail?

  53. Lisa says:

Account opened online. There is a branch down the street from me. Was able to fund 1k using boa travel rewards. It shows as pending. How do I know if it’s coded as CA? I had my CA limit set to 200$ and now it shows the limit is 0.

  54. T says:

Funded 5k with BofA travel rewards, CA limit is 1700. Currently pending, but did receive an email from BBVA that the opening deposit was processed

  55. Mac says:

Ugh, I only have Chase cards. Guess I will fund it with a regular bank deposit, although it seems to be a waste of a $5,000 deposit opportunity.

  56. JASON says:

Unfortunately we had some difficulty verifying your identity, so we won’t be able to complete your application online. You may visit a branch to apply for an account. Feel free to call us at 877-737-7727 with an questions.

That a sign of too many inquries on chex report.

  57. anne says:

I just applied online and got approved instantly with account #. Funded $3000 with Fidelity Visa (the cash advance limit is $1200), so I don’t have to worry about that. Too bad my limit is only $5000 but this works out nicely for my current Fidelity promotion (2000 bonus points once you spend $850 until Dec 31).

    • Denise says:

Did you fund with the Fidelity Rewards Visa Signature? I was thinking to maybe use this card. Sorry for asking, but how do you know for sure it won’t code as a cash advance? Thanks!

    • Diomai says:

Just to chime in here to reassure anyone wondering about using the Fidelity 2% rewards Visa card: I was able to open the ClearConnect checking and fund the max $5k using this card. Later got a “successful funding” email from BBVA and the charge showed up as pending. No sign of any CA fee.

Trying to fund savings with an add’l amount failed, but I think only because I was getting close to my CL on the card, so savings opened, but unfunded.

Unfortunately, I’m probably out of the running for the bonus. When I received my new account number and set up online access, what should be listed right along with my new acct but an old checking account that I thought I had closed about a year ago. Seems it never did close but has been sitting at $0 since then… Oh, well. Got $100 cashback out of the exercise anyway.

      • Diomaiuti says:

Oddly, I just got an email invitation from BBVA to open a ClearChoice acct “We’ve noticed you haven’t banked with us for a while…” Does anyone think I’d have any luck converting the ClearConnect to a ClearChoice and possibly get the bonus since it was by invitation?

  58. Young says:

    Has anybody seen the following?
“We’re sorry. The account you’re applying for is not available in your state.”

  59. britchurner says:

Funded 2500 with Cathay Pacific visa (synchrony bank)- it went through and got confirmation email that deposit was accepted. Cash advance available limit on the card seems unaffected, so am guessing this worked as a purchase. Nice way to meet the minimum spend and get 50,000 asia miles.

  60. quasimodo says:

WA state…tried opening and got the will call you back in 24-48 hours. Not sure what gives…had a BBVA NBA card for 2 years…closed recently. Did put spend on it…mostly during NBA 5x

  61. Curmudgeon says:

Will – the ClearConnect checking account does have a $3/mo fee for paper statements (default), but this can be avoided by choosing e-statements.

  62. FM says:

From reading all the comments so far i can’t tell for sure if anybody was able to do this with a chase card and CA limit set to $0. Can anybody confirm if it actually went through with a chase card and the type of card used?

  63. TG says:

I have two pending charges for some reason. One for the amount I funded and another for $75.

  64. sonia says:

for those that got the confirmation of the funding of the account, how long did it take from account approval to receipt of the funding email? thx

  65. Jay A says:

Account approved for me but funding of $800 failed. Received an email asking me to mail a check for $800 (that’s never going to happen).

My CA limit is $200 on this card. Noobish question I’ve never thought to ask: If funding an account processes as a CA, does it not also stick you with the CC CA fees and bypass triggering rewards for the transaction?

    • Jay A says:

Update: Called BBVA this morning about not being able to fund my account. The rep said funding has to happen within the first 30 days and suggested I wait another day or two and deposit money the old fashion ways (all the ways that don’t involve CC fund).

Also called my CC, they said there was no no attempt to run $800 that they can see in their side. This and all the other DPs has me seriously doubting CC fund is possible outside of cash advance for most people. Super confusing. I’ll take the $200 bonus though.

  66. Denise says:

    Can anyone help me out?

I need to know whether BBVA Compass will require a Signature Card or not? I’m a citizen and resident of the U.S, but I’m currently traveling overseas for the next few months. The Signature Card issue has tripped me up in the past when going for one of these bank bonuses.. trying to avoid that again, especially if I fund this with 5k..

  67. Sulj says:

Tried funding 5k twice with chase hyatt didnt go throug. Ca set at $1600

  68. Ben says:

Opened with a Chex freeze in place, DC, $5K charged to Merrill+

  69. Brax says:

Anyone thought about opening the checking first and then the savings later on… in order to use two different credit cards? I’m not sure if this would be possible or not. But just thinking. I have two cards where I’d love to spend 5k each :/ but I also don’t want to miss the chance of funding the Savings with a cc.

    • Too Good 2B! says:

I don’t see how there would be any issue with opening a savings account online later on and funding with a CC.

      • Jay says:

Only potential issue is the possibility of incurring an additional Chex inquiry, but DPs seem to indicate that they don’t pull Chex in the first place, so that’s probably not a factor here.

    • Bnau99 says:

DP- opened checking only, funded 5k with fidelity visa. Posted as purchase.

Logged in to my account and hit the icon that said open savings account. Funded 5k with fidelity visa again, posted as a purchase.

I didn’t want to frighten fidelity into denying the funding by doing them at the same time and it worked out.

  70. mcafeeee says:

    No promo code correct?

  71. J says:

Does anyone know if this is actually restricted per household?

  72. Samuel says:

    Hello all,

For those of you funding via CC with an amount greater than your CA limit, is the assumption being made that if the funding went through, the transaction was coded as a purchase and not a CA?

    Thank you in advance.

  73. JD says:

Anyone know if having a Simple account would disqualify you as a current account holder?

    • Robert says:

I am curious about this also. However, if we can fund with cc, then the bonus is secondary to get a min spend covered.

  74. Richard says:

Used wellsfargo cash wise visa for $5k open fund, got a result said banker will call me 24/48 with application id#, not sure what to expect, I am in TN

  75. Mimi says:

With a lot of $5K CC initial deposits getting denied, I’m wondering if that was a typo from the bank’s end with BBVA’s actual limit at $500?

IME with Suntrust where I used CitiDC and ChaseFU for the initial deposits, they were both rejected and found out ST coded it as cash advance. I’d rather have it rejected though instead of paying huge CA fees if it went through.

    • Ann says:

The comment right after yours successfully funded $4200 with a Merrill CC.

    • Superchurn says:

nope, not a mistake. I successfully funded with US Bank Cash+ for $5000 with a CA limit set to $0

      • It’s showing as a purchase?

        • Miles Hustler says:

Hey @Superchurn, wanted to confirm that your charge actually posted as a purchase and that you did not change the CA limit prior to it posting. This week, I tried to do a test charge for a much smaller amount with the CA limit set to zero, and while it was initially pending, the charge eventually just fell off and disappeared. Called US Bank to see what happened, and they said it didn’t go through since my CA limit was set to 0. I have the US Bank Biz Flexperks

          • Superchurn says:

Well, I had set the CA limit to 0 some time ago. and yes, it did post successfully. It shows $5000 under the Charges column, with a description of “Bbva Compass Visa Transfer Al”

I called them to reconfirm my CA limit of 0, so it must be a purchase since it cannot be a CA

        • Superchurn says:

for some reason, US Bank’s interface doesn’t let me explore individual charges, but it does show up as $5000 under the Charges column with a description of “Bbva Compass Visa Transfer Al”

The Transfer bit seems odd, and I’m not sure what Al means, but it doesn’t look like a cash advance, so I don’t think it is

          • Jeff G says:

Just showed u the same for me. USAA limitless, does not show cash back yet.

          • Miles Hustler says:

Ok, thanks, Superchurn. Please report back after the statement closes to confirm there are no fees. If your limit is set to 0, it should be fine but that “transfer” language has me curious. Thanks in advance

          • Jeff G says:

My cash back has now shown up, $125, no apparent fees.

Time to get that savings account going.

  76. Adam says:

Successfully funded $4,200 with Merrill card. No problem.

  77. DCJoe says:

Reminder to turn off paper statements (Service Center–>Online Banking Services), which are automatically set to ON and will charge you $3/month.

  78. Brendan says:

Tried to fund $5,000 with Capital One Quicksilver. Everything seemed to go through smoothly, but my BBVA balance is $0 and I have no charges on my QS card. Bummer, was hoping I’d get an extra $75 cashback.

    • NoonRadar says:

Once your Quicksilver charge posts, let us know if it was processed as cash advance or not. CapOne refused to make my cash advance limit $0 or anything close to it, it’s over $10K.

I’d also be interested to know if anyone tried to fund these accounts with CapOne Spark (your name is on it so BBVA shouldn’t have an issue processing it) or Discover IT if that’s an option.

Citi Costco I guess would be a safe bet since Citi does let you set the CA limit to $0, at least has in the past.

      • Darv says:

I funded BBVA checking with Cap 1 earlier this year. Initially coded as cash advance but reverted to purchase when it posted. That was not a fun three days.

        • Superchurn says:

good to know…here’s hoping CapOne doesn’t bend me over for using the QS to fund it

          • Superchurn says:

Update: I got the $75 cash back on my Quicksilver. Which makes me think its going to be a purchase when it gets done pending. I doubt CapOne is generous to give 1.5% back on a Cash Advance

A friend who used the QS also got the $75, so that’s 2 DP that are encouraging

          • becoo says:

Thanks for this, Supercharge! I might try this w/ my QS, too. Can you report back if the load remains a purchase after it finishes pending?

          • Matt K says:

Used my QS and $75 posted right away next day too. Confirms it’s a purchase. My cash advance line was lowered at first so was a bit nervous.

          • Superchurn says:

Reporting back of 3 successful fundings with my CapOne Quicksilver Visa. All 3 posted as purchases, and all 3 yielded instant $75 cash back, which I’ve since redeemed.

            No apparent fees anywhere

  79. denise says:

Question for you guys.. I’ve read through all the comments.. I’m especially concerned about some people getting their opening deposits funded by credit card declined. I’m overseas for the next few months, so there wouldn’t be any possible way for me to mall in a check or visit a branch, should my CC funding get declined for some reason.

How many people are getting the “you must send in a check” for opening deposit message / e-mail?

How many people are getting the option to fund via a checking account, if your CC funding failed?

  80. denise says:

    Sorry.. one more follow-up question..

Do you think it’s any more likely that an opening deposit of $5,000 (checking) + $5,000 (savings) would go through instead of just a $5,000 (checking)? or even just a $3,500 opening deposit?

I really would like to try to fund with at least $8,000, to reach spend on a card.. but I don’t know whether people here are getting denied or if I’ll be more likely to have my CC funding denied if I’m trying to fund with say $4,000 + $4,000 (savings).. instead of just maybe one $3,500 (checking)

    • kirk says:

what card will you be using?

some positive DPs now. mostly BoA cards (few rejections too though). a US bank and Fidelity card seemed to have worked also. every other cards (Chase mostly), declined or in limbo unfortunately.

*my blispay 2% visa card was rejected.

  81. Chap says:

I can’t seem to find if there are any fees for initiating an ETF/ACH to another Bank from BBVA. Does anyone know?

  82. Billy says:

For those who opened this account..

Did it say anywhere that it will be necessary to MAIL in a Signature Card?
With each of these bonuses, I always wonder whether we will be required to mail a physical signature card in.

  83. Billy says:

Do we have to mail in a physical Signature Card for either the BBVA checking or savings? I mean, does it say so anywhere during the online account application?

  84. Kapil says:

Need to be US citizen to apply online , others need to visit branch

  85. Peter says:

Just tried funding ($2,450) with Citi Prestige. Bounced back saying it was declined. No record in my Citi account so I called, and was told of a $0 cash advance record. Thank goodness that I (unintentionally) tried an amount higher than my CA limit.

Then I tried funding ($4,000) with CSR, intentionally set above my CA limit. System let it go through and my account is approved and open. 20 minutes later there’s still no amount showing either in BBVA or Chase.

  86. NoonRadar says:

Has anyone who had BBVA accounts in the past tried using Wells Fargo ach as DD? If not what worked for you (other than actual DD?) The DD data points thread for BBVA doesn’t seem to have many reports on it. Thank you.

  87. FM says:

As a follow-up, I just tried opening checking + savings with funding from my CSR ($4500 each, $9000 total). I called Chase ahead of time to give them a heads up just to be safe. It says my account was approved and I got account numbers but no pending charge on my CSR thus far. Fingers crossed it works out!

    • FM says:

As a follow-up, I received an email shortly after I posted the above and they said they were unable to fund the account. Chase says they see no pending charge from them. Bummer, not sure what else I can do here now 🙁

  88. JR says:

Want to pull the trigger on this, but I’m waiting for more feedback on whether funding with Chase CC’s are posting as cash advance or purchase.

  89. SF says:

Applied and got a “under review” status 🙁 Said a rep will call me to confirm various things.

  90. Pipboy says:

As a DP, I tried a business card (Cap One Spark) with my name as the business name. Declined.

  91. quasimodo says:

they opened my account, but visa BofA CC denied. Maybe I try lower amount…or I just send money via ACH.

  92. ChurningFast says:

Was given an ‘under review’ yesterday. Just got an email saying I need to visit a branch for them to validate my identity. The nearest branch is 1506 miles away, according to Google maps, lol

  93. meed18 says:

No issue opening a BBVA Compass ClearConnect Checking account online with a Virginia address. I received an account number and online access immediately after completing application. Be sure to use your real cell phone number because they will send a verification text. I didn’t have to do any identity verification questions. No data point from me for credit card funding – I funded the minimum $25 with a Master Card debit card. Went ahead and turned off paper statements so the account should be fee free with no issues.

  94. dizzy says:

App pending review…I tried to fund with a GCM Gebit since why not, another user reported success. It did let me get as far as creating an online username so I’m thinking problem is just with the card? I did register the card btw.

  95. Marshall says:

I just got approved. Funded mine with $5,000 on BofA premium rewards. So now I’ve made my $3,000 minimum spending. YIPPEE!

    • Robert says:

Do you actually see the pending charge on your BOA account? I just signed up for the Premium card with this strategy t meet the min spend

    • meghan says:

i tried funding 5k with boa premium. a day later they emailed me and said ‘unfortunately we cant fund, please mail us a check’

very annoying bbva. dont accept cc funding if you’re not going to honor it.

  96. t says:

Browsing through the comments… have there been any positive DP with CC funding? Looks like most go into process and later get denied. Doc, can you update above if anyone post positive DPs?
Looks like most cards I have had been tried. Maybe I will try the Barclay A+ but it’s not under my name… Anyone else made it work? Thank!

  97. Gerry says:

Another DP. Opened ClearChoice account just now, funded with Alaska BOA CC for $1,500. Approved, and just got email that funding will be deposited in 2-3 days. The charge showed up on BOA as pending.

  98. Jill says:

Did anyone use Alliant CU Visa Signature credit card (3% Cashback)?
Did it Code as purchase or as cash advance?

  99. Lloyd says:

I had no problem opening my account using a Chase Freedom Unlimited card (Visa) for initial funding. But 20 minutes later there were still no pending charges on the card. Several hours later I received the following email:

    Dear Lloyd,

You recently initiated a request to make an initial deposit to your new account(s) with $5,000.00 from Visa, Credit Card. Unfortunately, we were unable to fund your new account(s) using your source account.

    Action Required

In order to fund your new account, please send a check for $5,000.00 to BBVA Compass, 701 South 32nd Street, Birmingham, AL 35233

Please make it payable to BBVA Compass and include your Applicant ID number in the memo area.

    • Kathy Hamilton says:

I received the same email–after I received a notification from Fidelity that a charge had been processed for $5,000. Hmmm

      • denise says:

Hi, did you fund with a Fidelity Rewards Visa Signature? I was thinking to use this card too. But I am wondering whether it will go through as a purchase or a cash advance. I worry about the latter.

      • kirk says:

wow! almost SEEMS like someone from BBVA manually reviews cc funding and decides which ones go through or not. in your case, approve initially and now possibly taken back. *popcorn* keep us posted.

        • TJ says:

A lot might have to do with whether the new account is being applied during business hours or non business hours.

          • kirk says:

perhaps …but there are already at least a couple of positive DPs for Fidelity funding. safe to assume that hers should go through also but getting that ‘can not fund email’ AFTER getting notified by Fidelity that a charge is being processed seems sketchy to me.

*perhaps i’m just bitter coz my blispay funding did not work. boo-hoo! 🙁

  100. Jeff G says:

Successful opening of account, 16 in last 8 months.

Attempting to fund with USAA Limitless. My CA is set at $3k, I attempted $5k funding. Went online and informed them of upcoming $5k purchase.

  101. gene says:

Is there a requirement to keep the direct deposit coming in for the year to keep the bonus or avoid fees?

Also, anyone know if I have a fraud alert from a long ago incident where someone opened a credit card in my name will they open it for me online as no branches are in my state? Thanks

  102. J. Grant says:

Application pending. Funded maximum with BofA Visa. Called BofA to add a note to my account to expect a large purchase for 10K so they don’t flag the purchase. Fingers crossed!

  103. Dave says:

Does anyone know: If you open the checking with CC, can you open the savings at a later date also funding via CC? Or do they both have to be done at once to take advantage of CC funding?

    • Kathy H says:

I opened my checking account a couple of weeks ago at a branch, and I opened a savings account online today using credit card for funding. Used the Fidelity Visa–will know in a day or two if the credit card funding was successful.

  104. jamesheine says:

Tried funding $5k with Capital One Venture and not allowed to

    • m says:

jamesheine, did you call ahead to ensure the large charge wouldn’t be flagged as suspicious? this may be responsible for the declined funding.

  105. JR says:

As much as I’d like to try funding with my CSP, I think I’ll just try a pin-enabled Visa GC as a debit card.

  106. max says:

does anyone know if ach counts as direct deposit?

  107. Samwise says:

Chase does not appear to work.
Tried with my United card and got the Email prompting me for the $5,000 check instead.

  108. Klad says:

DP: Not a US Citizen, was able to open account online.. funded $4500 with BOA Premium Rewards, no pending charges, will report back if it eventually post.

    • Klad says:

Received an email from BBVA that my initial deposit has been processed, at the time I am also seeing a pending charge on Premium Rewards.. it sure will post as purchase, CA limit already lowered to $200

    • Bill says:

Klad: Would you share How were you able to open online being a non-citizen? When I try it pops up an error message “o apply online for a BBVA Compass account you must be a U.S. Citizen. However, you can apply in person at any BBVA Compass banking center.” Thanks for your help

      • Klad says:

You can say ‘Yes’ to ‘US Citizen’ question and after funding page on final verification page they only need you to be a ‘US Person’ which we are..

        • Bill says:

          Great. Thanks

        • Danny says:

That’s called fraud to obtain financial services. You can go to jail for that.

        • Terry says:

I agree that this is fraud. You can try and justify it all that you want but if you answer Yes to whether you are a US Citizen and you are not, that is fraud. I don’t care whether you are a US person, a US taxpayer, or a resident legal alien, you are not a US citizen and you have lied on the application.

          • Klad says:

I do not want to be in an argument but it’s just a matter of verbiage on banks website.. there is subtle difference between lying and fraud.. If this is fraud there are lot of things we all are doing which is fraud as well – for e.g. opening business account/card without an actual business, pretending you need multiple cards for separating business expense, opening area specific accounts by inputting footprint zip first and later on changing the zip, booking a refundable flight getting the credit canceling the ticket, and so on.. and then there were people who open those BMO and M&T accounts without the residency status.

          • Bernard Albrecht says:

I hate to generalize, but SO many immigrants to the USA work their way to prosperity through fraudulent activity.

I’m an immigrant, now a citizen. I’ve been a part of a few different immigrant communities, once you’re in the circles, you see the weird stuff that people do to get free money, housing and services from the government, non-profits, etc.

And they think it’s OK, they think they’re entitled to it, and see nothing wrong with breaking laws.

I should be surprised this guy lied on his app, but I’m not. It’s standard practice for them. It’s what they did back in their home countries, and continue to do here in the USA.

          • If you hate to generalize, maybe just don’t do it? I found your comment to be pretty offensive to be honest.

          • RT says:

            Drump supporter?

        • tony says:

You sound completely clueless and probably deserve to be in jail for FRAUD.

btw, being self-employed IS IN FACT legally for tax purposes considered as owning a business (there are licenses, etc. but that’s a different topic). You are comparing apples and oranges. hope they catch you

          • Klad says:

No need to be rude.. I did my research and know my limits..

When I talk about business, I am not talking about self-employed people they are legal by all means.. what I meant was people lie of business account/card applications about their business and it works for them.. same thing applied here as well, its not about lying or fraud its about interpretation

        • Terry says:

What is there to interpret about being a US citizen? You either are a US citizen or you aren’t. No interpretation necessary.

          • Klad says:

For Bank account purposes if you are a resident alien with valid SSN and have a local address then you are considered a US Person and is good enough to proceed openeing an account.. I do not want to argue more and ruin this post.. tried to be DP for others but stuck being a so called “fraudster” which I am confident I am not..

          • David says:

I don’t think he’s committing fraud by any means. He clearly knows the lingo since he works for a bank. Plus, yes – a resident alien with a SSN should be eligible for this.

    • Tax Man says:

You’re a U.S Person. NOT a U.S citizen as the application asks. It is plainly fraud and against the law.

  109. PR says:

    Positive DP for CC Funding!

-Applied on 11-7 & funded $5,000 with the Fidelity Rewards Visa Signature (2% cash back).
(I called Fidelity ahead of time to let them know the purchase was coming. They noted BBVA Compass in my account.)
    -Checking account was opened instantly
    -Purchase went to pending
-2 hours later, I received an email from BBVA confirming opening deposit was processed
-22 hours later, the $5,000 purchase just posted
-Still hasn’t shown up in the account, but I’m hopeful it’ll show up in a day or two

    • denise says:

Wow! It’s good to hear from someone using their Fidelity Rewards card.

Did it already clear your Fidelity account as a “purchase” and not a “cash advance?”

Just curious also why did you not want to open a BBVA Savings account to fund it with an additional $5,000 of spend (extra $50 of rewards).

I am still thinking of opening a BBVA Checking and Savings at the same time and funding $5,000 each with my Fidelity Rewards Visa Signature.

      • PR says:

Yep, it has cleared my Fidelity account and posted as a purchase. It shows up as “BBVA COMPASS Visa Transfer AL” & I also called customer service to double check it is a purchase.

I plan to do the savings account next, I only have a credit limit of $6,500 on this card.

        • Dan says:

Did you notice anywhere did it say anything about a Signature Card or needing to mail in a signature card? Some checking and savings accounts require this. I’m a U.S citizen but overseas for the next few months. Thanks!

          • PR says:

It didn’t ask me for a signature card & I’ve never had any contact with BBVA Compass before this.

        • anne says:

I also got “BBVA COMPASS Visa Transfer AL” for $3000 initial deposit. Just came here to see if this means a purchase. The way the charge was posted was not clear if it was a cash advance or purchase, especially with “transfer” word.

        • anne says:

Even lower credit limit than yours ($5000) so I could only do $3000 because there was already $1000 purchases on the card prevously.

  110. Dan says:

Anyone who opened the BBVA Savings account in addition… did the 5k for the Savings also count as a purchase, and not a cash advance? I’m thinking to use the 2% Fidelity Rewards Visa

  111. Mark says:

Are there any current DPs on non-employer DDs?

The BBVA page seems to have limited DPs.

  112. Chris says:

Has anyone tried funding with Citi Costco card?

  113. dan says:

    Ah crap.

After carefully reading all the comments for 1.5 days on here before applying to open the BBVA clearchoice checking.. I just got the message: “we are currently reviewing your application.” it says they will call in 2 – 3 days. So far I didn’t see anyone who got this message was able to get it automatically approved.

I’m just wondering.. for anyone who got this message.. did you try to put another application through? I saw in the comments that one guy who got his funding rejected.. simply put another application in.

For identification I used my passport instead of my driver’s license. I wonder did anyone else here use their passport? I’m wondering if that’s it.

If I were to re-apply before Nov. 20th. I’m wondering maybe I should also try a different credit card.

I dunno. I dunno why I couldn’t get this bank bonus opening to be a success. I had success this year with the M&T account and recently the HSBC was no problems either for me. I’ve opened about 7 – 8 accounts this year.

    • LC says:

I’d wait before you get a decision before putting in another application in or they might just close both accounts and refund CC. It’s not specific to passport, same thing happened to my dad but he used DL

  114. sara says:

When we used to load Serve with Chase cards it was always pending as a cash advance and then posted as a purchase. In that case the cash advance limit had to be greater than the charge.
All these people writing that they got declined, did any of you have a cash advance limit large enough to cover this?

  115. Dan says:

Credit card funding declined (Citi DoubleCash). Called Citi and they said this would code as a cash advance. Since my cash advance limit is set to $0, it didn’t go through. Also, if your CC is declined 3 times in a row, they won’t allow any more attempts to fund with CC

  116. Dave says:

Any data points for funding with a US Bank Visa (i.e.: Club Carlson)?

  117. Shaun says:

Hmm tryied to charge $10,000 to my Quicksilver and then $7000, both declined. No email or notice Capital One about the attempted charge.

  118. Matt says:

DP…Was able to fund $5,000 with USAA limitless cash back card. Posted as a purchase today. Will be opening a savings this afternoon with another $5,000.

  119. ed says:

Does anyone know if if bbva accepts an ach transfer as a direct deposit?

  120. kirk says:

besides the $3 paper statement fee (turned On by default), be aware of the Courtesy Overdraft Options. ATM & Everyday Transactions is Opt-In by default.

    • James B. says:

Good point…….Opened account yesterday and I just now turned off paper statements and courtesy overdraft options for checks and all other options. Courtesy overdraft option for ATM and Everyday Transactions was already turned off by default in my case.

Couresy overdraft for ATM, etc usually requires a hard pull. I did not see any hard pull alerts so far from Karma, etc……..

Can we open this account via phone??

  122. anthonyjh21 says:

Opened and funded $5k on 11/6 with my Alliant Visa CC. Funds posted today as a purchase “BBVA COMPASS Visa TransferAL ”

Debating on the savings account now for another $5k. I might want to let it sit for a while considering how touchy BBVA is known for being (such as with this offer and their Amex card previously known as the NBA card).

    • kirk says:

lucky! that’s at least an extra 100 bucks! more, if you got the 3% card going.

if i were you i’d go for it now. especially if you’re not ‘saving’ that ‘bbva savings/any account 5k funding slot’ for an MSR. if i’m not mistaken this is the first time they’ve offered an online app for a bonus. norrmally in-branch, i believe. lotsa people taking advantage of the 5k funding and as you say, BBVA is known for being a .. i mean, touchy. who knows.. they might lower cc funding, reject more/different banks visa cc, or worse, close cc funding in the future. i say, strike while the iron is hot! 😀

      • anthonyjh21 says:

Yeah I have the 3% card. Originally had the now 2% card from a targeted $400 bonus. When the 3% card came out I product changed. We have quite a bit of expenses so I’ll probably keep it for the foreseeable future. Can’t hurt my banking relationship and I’ve never had any fraud issues.

    • R says:

      transfer AL means purchase?

  123. Chris says:

On-line app couldn’t verify my identity (DL) even though I have a credit card account with them and pre-filled the application by logging on to my account! Had to call in, went through the process and the phone rep says because I’m doing the app over the phone, I have to go to a branch to finish opening the account and be eligible for the bonus–even though the terms say i can open over the phone!

  124. Most likely not, King. Online directed me to branch to open twice, I have dozen plus Chex inquiries this year and sub-prime credit, they opened with $25 cash so I can’t speak to the reason most of you are using it.

  125. Help says:

I funded $1k with BoA cashback rewards credit card. Transaction posted. I am now seeing a second $1000 charge on my credit card pending? I can’t get a hold of BBVA. Anyone else having this happen?

    • Neal says:

Yes, I got the same, $3000 funded and shows as a purchase, also still shows $3000 as pending. Assume it will drop away soon.

The charge that went through codes as a purchase but the wording below would make me nervous. Still if nothing changes all is well.

      Merchant information: Visa Transfer, AL
      Merchant Name: BBVA COMPASSS
Transaction Category: Finance: LoansSelect to Edit

      • Joe says:

Been pending for almost 3 days, I assume it will drop soon? Frustrating as I maxed out my card with that, and now I’m over my credit line with that charge

        • denise says:

I’m in the same situation.. I got the “manual review” message 3 days ago. But my card never got charged. Did they charge your card? That seems very confusing.

Are you going to try again and apply again and hopefully the new one doesn’t get frozen?

        • Jon says:

Joe, how did you deal with your card being charged twice? Did you speak with BOA or BBVA? Did you get the second charge dropped?

          • Joe says:

It eventually dropped after 6 business days. BoA can’t do anything until it posts (understandable) and BBVA said it was only charged once and I’m crazy. It wasn’t a big deal, was just annoying that my card was maxed out with that pending charge

  126. tinker25 says:

CC fund page appeared to be fine, No ID verification questions asked. But ended with message: “Thank you for applying for a ClearConnect Checking account. Unfortunately we need to manually review your application. We will contact you by email or phone (usually within 24-48 hours) to collect anything needed to help us finish processing your application.
Feel free to reach out to us at 877-737-7727 with any questions regarding the status of your application. ”

Logged on CC, no pending charges showing

  127. Max says:

I’m a TN resident and opened the Clear Connect account. I funded $5,000 with my CSP and received an instant approved message. Funding said to show in 2-3 days. We’ll see!!!

  128. tinker25 says:

For those of you who opened online, did it ask for ID verification questions?

  129. Joe says:

DP: The Clearconnect Checking account opened immediately for me, a Utah resident, but I just received an e-mail confirmation after 30 minutes that my BoA Cash Rewards Visa was declined for the initial $5,000 deposit even though I called the funding in to BoA ahead of time.

Oh, well. I’ll still keep the account for the $200 bonus. Hopefully that works out better than this initial funding fiasco.

  130. JR says:

Anyone successfully funded using a PIN enabled gift card? If so, what type?

  131. Eric says:

DP: I opened a Clearconnect checking account and funded with a BOA Alaska Airlines card (personal) for $5k. After pending for a couple days, BOA posted it as a purchase this morning and my BBVA checking account shows a $5k balance as well. Strangely though, the pending charge hasn’t dropped off yet, so I have $0 credit remaining on that card ($5k pending + $5k purchase posted). I’m assuming it’ll drop off eventually.

  132. Austin P says:

  133. Docta G says:

Funded $10,000 (checking and savings accounts) with USAA Limitless Cash. It went through as a purchase, not a cash advance. At 2.5%, the cash back is $250, better than the actual bonus. Might open the accounts for my spouse as well, and at least get the $250 cash back, even if we can’t get another bonus because of the household limitation…

    • Jeff G says:

Great idea, thinking of doing the same once I am sure my USAA purchase goes through.

    • anne says:

Do you think if we both open accounts for wife and husband during the promotion time, bonus payout can be affected? In other words, how do they decide to whose account is bonus credited? Can we just open accounts for spouse after the promotion since bonus does not matter anyways assuming that the accounts can still be opened online and credit card funding still works? Just a thought.

      • Docta G says:

My guess would be whoever met the conditions first would get the bonus. So many times these banks don’t actually enforce their terms, so who knows, maybe both spouses will get the bonus. Probably won’t be any DPs on that before the offer expires though.

Tried funding $5k with Capital One Venture and not allowed to

    • T says:

      Hi JP,

When your account was funded, was the transaction coded as a cash advance or as a purchase on capital one’s side?

      • JP says:

Coincidentally my CA limit is also 5000, but I think it never coded that. It codes something like visa transfer….. but as purchase.

        • T says:

I see. Can you clarify some more on how it looked to your via your account online? I have never made any cash advances before, and I wouldnt like to get hit with those fees, so I am cautious…

So you are saying that it never coded or appeared as a cash advance to you, and that it was always a purchase? And that you received your miles immediately?

From what I can tell, it looks like people that can fund the account with Cap One cards usually get it classified as a purchase, or they don’t get accepted at all.

Thanks for your replies. As I said, I want to be reasonably confident that my Venture card will either be coded as a purchase or not at all before I make the leap… Would really like to hit that minimum spend…

  135. Curmudgeon says:

Just opened checking & savings, instant approval and have access to my account already.

Funded $5k checking, $5k savings. Used Merrill+ card. Called BOA yesterday to advise of large purchase and had them note on account.

Will update if credit funding doesn’t go through.

    • Curmudgeon says:

Got the “Your deposit has been processed” from BBVA about an hour after opening the account.

Charges showing as pending on Merrill+. Cash limit on this card is $200.

Just saw that my statement closes on the 10th. Hopefully it will take a couple days to go from pending to actual charge so it misses my statement cut off. I was hoping to pay off the charge before the statement cut, but that may not happen now.

      • Melon says:

Is there a reason to pay before the cutoff other than OCD?

        • Curmudgeon says:

Credit utilization is a part of the FICO scoring model. Higher balances lower the score so lots of people pay charges off before the statement date to prevent temporary drops in their score.

  136. SkinnyElvis says:

Dear God are they incompetent. Got disconnected 3x while trying to set up an online account b/c somehow I was not signed up for online banking; I guess it is 1997? Their website has a schedule a call option but when you click on that; it states that function is down. On hold again…

  137. Scoobs says:

Funded about $4600 with business Amegy Card (as part of that separate business card promo). Took a few days for it to show up.

    • Steve tx says:

That’s great to hear on a couple of levels. I had read that only personal cards could be used for this funding. How was Amegy’s application process?

      • Stammers95 says:

Steve – I just went through the process and it was smooth (applied out of state). The only real issue I had was that it took about roughly 30 days from the day applying to the day Im estimating to get the card. Well worth the wait for the extra $1000 bonus I guess especailly if I can knock out $5k of the required spend with Compass Bonus.

    • Stammers95 says:

Scoobs, you beat me to the punch with this DP…I got approved for the business Amegy card as well and waiting on the card to be sent to me. Hopefully I will get it in time to use for this bonus. Thanks again for the DP!

    • Thanks and it’s showing now?

  138. NickS says:

OK…it appears folks are having no issues funding the $5K with Merrill…..for those who have used their Merrill card for funding can you confirm it went through as a purchase?. Already called Merrill to reduce CA to the minimum($200) and ready to pull the trigger on this. Thanks in advance

    • Curmudgeon says:

I funded with Merrill+ (2x $5k) and got the email from BBVA that my opening deposit has been processed (about an hour after getting the “welcome to BBVA” message) , and the charges are showing as pending with BOA.

My cash limit on this card was already set to $200, so I’d be pretty upset if they allowed a $10k cash advance against that. I’m expecting it to post as a purchase.

  139. Roger says:

Attempted funding $5k + $5k on Chase Amazon Visa, declined. Called BBVA and CSR confirmed that you don’t get another crack at it with another credit card; that funding action is only available during the initial sign-up phase.

  140. LAG says:

DP: Confirming Merrill+ works for $5k funding w/confirmation of coding as purchases

My Merrill+ went through on 11/7/17 for $5k, received account number immediately, received email confirmation of account opening shortly thereafter, and 2 hrs later received add’l emailing confirming initial deposit processed.

Went pending on BOA 11/8/17 & now posted to BOA & BBVA on 11/9/17.

    BOA shows:
    – Transaction type: Purchases

  141. Aaron says:

Mixed DP. Used my BoA Alaska Airlines card to fund both a checking and savings account, $5k each (why not go for broke?!), both at the same time during account opening.

Just got back “Your Opening Deposit Has Been Processed” for the checking account, but a separate “We Could Not Fund Your New Account(s)” for the savings account.

It would appear it processes them as two transactions, and for some reason, the second transaction didn’t go through. There is one “BBVA COMPASS” pending on my Alaska card statement. In hindsight, I should have probably funded a slightly different amount on the savings, I’m guessing that BoA declined because they appeared to be duplicate charges (though I don’t feel like bothering to call them). Oh well, it’s still 5,000 Alaska miles + $200.

  142. MaddoX says:

BOA Premium Rewards posted as purchase.. received the 50K bonus.. sweet

  143. MaddoX says:

  144. Liz says:

Successfully funded using Merrill+ card. My limit is $5000, so I funded $4900.

  145. Kevin says:

Opened the ClearChoice Free checking for my wife and successfully funded $5000 on her BofA Travel Rewards Visa.

Thanks to kirk for the heads up on the paper statement $3 fee (default on) and the overdraft (default on).

  146. Tom says:

Anybody who wasn’t approved instantly and received the “We’re reviewing your application” actually heard from BBVA yet about whether application was approved or denied? I applied this Monday and haven’t hear anything yet. Wondering if others have?

    • John says:

I called the number listed in the email. I was then directed to the verification department and the rep there sent me a one time code to my cell phone. I was able to verify that and then she stated I would receive an email in 2-3 business days with a decision. Hoping that’s enough haha

    • Tom says:

Received an email from them this morning with my temporary password for online banking. They never even notified me that my app was approved and account opened. I called and the rep said my account was open and provided me my account info. She stated that if your account was approved instantly after the online app and needed to be reviewed, they don’t notify via email of account approval. Someone will call you once it’s approved. I never received a call. I asked her about my cc funding during app (5k BOA Cash Rewards), she said she doesn’t see it and I would receive an email if it was declined. Haven’t received an email of cc decline and there are no pending charges on my BOA account.

      • denise says:

so you got the message “we’re manually reviewing your app.. and expect a call within 24 – 48 hours”.. but then today (surprisingly).. and 5 days later.. you get an e-mail telling you that your app was approved?

If I understand your comment correctly.. that gives some hope to the rest of us who got the manually reviewed message. lol

        • Tom says:

Yes, received the “we’re reviewing your app” email on Monday. They never notified me that my account was approved. Out of the blue today, they sent me a temporary password for online login. Called them and they told me my account was approved. Just received email that my $5k cc deposit with BOA cash rewards card was processed. I did call BOA ahead of time that there would be a $5k charge. Hopefully, it goes through fine.

  147. Richard says:

I applied on 7th and said being reviewed and some one call me 48 hours, no one called, so I called compass today after 48 hours, asking for an update, they said it’s up to 10 business days and I will be contacted by mail or email, so I guess I will wait, strange thing is my Visa card never show attempted 5 k pending or auth.

    • Tom says:

Up to 10 business days may be cutting it close to the 11/20 promotion expiration. I’ve been waiting since Monday

    • denise says:

I’m in the same situation. I applied almost 4 days ago. At the end of the checking application it said “we will review manually and contact you in 24 – 48 hours. I’m actually wondering whether anyone who got this manual review message has simply tried making a new checking application? Maybe the second try it could just go through automatically?? Either that, or I wonder does it flag as suspicious activity and alert their fraud department?

This is the first time that I’ve had any issues with opening a bank account online in at least two years. So it seems confusing why this account could be so easy for most people to get approved automatically, but a few of us got the “manual review” message. It makes me think maybe we should try applying again to see what happens before the Nov. 20 deadline. I’ve never had this happen before.

      • Tom says:

Never experienced this before either. I’m going to give it until middle of next week. If still no response, I’ll try to apply again.

  148. Matt P says:

Attempted $4,350 ($4,250 checking, $100 savings) on CFU. Initially said it went through, then got an email saying it was canceled. My accounts there are frozen now for suspicious activity, can’t transfer from any other bank or deposit any checks. It seems that unfreezing an account is done on a case-by-case basis by the fraud rep that originally froze it, and the frontline rep I spoke to implied that it may not even be possible, and I would have to open a new account. Be VERY careful with credit card funding on this one. I’ve got payroll heading that way that I can’t cancel (fortunately just enough for the bonus), so I’m hoping they are able to fix it, otherwise I need to work with their asset recovery team, the rep said.

    • Ann says:

Nobody’s gotten any Chase cards to go through on this yet, but I think you’re the first to report that Compass froze the whole account after a failed CC funding attempt! 😮 Was there anything else unusual about your experience?

    • denise says:

Wow.. so you mean, the account was approved.. funding was approved.. but your account got frozen?? In all the comments on here, this is the first time I heard of your scenario. Any idea why BBVA targeted you specifically?

    • Joe says:

I just received notice from my payroll department that my new BBVA account was invalid as well. I called in, was transferred around three times, and have now finally been told that my account has been frozen. I am now on hold to talk with yet someone else. I also had a failed CC initial deposit, but then successfully sent in $25 from another bank account to make sure I funded it as part of the $200 promotion – so I figured that would mean everything would work out ok.

Boy, was I wrong. This promotion just keeps getting messier, and messier. They now have $25 locked up tight. At least it isn’t the $5,000 I initially tried to fund the account with via CC.

  149. Josh says:

Opened the free checking account online, funded with $4950 with my USAA Limitless Cashback (I have a $5k limit & I used it to get gas this morning lol). Notified USAA in app ahead of time about purchase. Easy peasy.

  150. Cole says:

Just curious… i know its nice to get money from USAA… maybe i like my USAA card too much to “abuse” it? just trying to understand the thoughts.

  151. Jeff says:

Uber Visa was declined for funding – had CA set at $2000, told Barclays about purchase in advance on the phone, and tried funding for $3000, declined.

Merrill went through fine after that.

    • Jeff says:

Got the dreaded e-mail today that Merrill funding did not go through, and they want a 4k check. Does anyone know if we’d still be eligible for the bonus if we transfer $25 from another bank for the opening deposit?

      • Joe says:

You might be, that’s what I’m trying for after my CC funding failed. But be beware, they will probably lock your account down as they did mine. See my reply above on this point.

  152. Sivs says:

I was able to successfully fund 5k with Merrill+ card. Does anyone know how long I need to wait before I can use those funds to pay the card off? Also, is there a minimum balance required to keep the account fee free? Thanks!

  153. Brian says:

A DP regarding the business cards. I tried using a CIC to fund the account. It got denied due to it being marked as a cash advance (and above my CA limit). Not sure if it was due to it being a business card or whether it was only because of my CA limit but it seems like the business card would have worked…

  154. Luke says:

Funded with a Alliant credit card and posted as purchase. Nice and easy $150 cashback. Account opened and approved the same day.

    • Luke says:

I’ll have to reverse on this comment. My purchase posted on 11/08 but on 11/14 it was refunded back to my credit card.

      • kirk says:

refunded? what was the exact wording? tia!

also how much was your available credit when you funded? was it 10k or less?

      • Daniel G says:

I’m in a similar situation. I opened on 11/8 with 2 $5k charges on my Alliant Visa ($15k credit limit), the funds never hit BBVA but today they were credited back to my Alliant Visa. Might have not worked out too badly… The rewards are still posted to my account. I imagine the way the credit is treated will determine if the rewards are clawed back or not.

        • kirk says:

any email/contact from either bbva or alliant about this credit/refund back?

im waiting on my alliant card with 4k msr. was gonna use bbva coz of alliant’s positive dps here but now i see a couple being ‘returned’ after a few days of successfully funding it. O.o

  155. Simon says:

11/06: I applied for the ClearConnect checking (no savings), with all three credit report frozen and also fraud alert in place. I notified BoA of an upcoming large purchase and then used Merrill+ to fund $5k. After I submitted the application, I got the pending review message.
11/09: I received a call from BBVA to verify my identity – DoB, address etc., and after that I was told I’d receive a decision for the account application soon.
11/10: I received emails from BBVA asking me to change my online account password. I followed the instructions and set up my online account, and saw my new checking account. About the same time, I got an email saying that my initial funding went through. I checked BoA and the $5k was shown as a pending purchase.

    Thanks, DoC!

  156. Avi says:

Called BOA to let them know I’d be making two $5k purchases today with my Merrill+, then applied for checking and savings with $5k funding in each using Merrill+, accounts instantly approved, about an hour later I received emails from BBVA stating that they couldn’t fund my new accounts with the card.

  157. Elliot says:

tried to fund $5000 with my bank of america cash rewards visa, it was rejected by BBVA, even though I called bank of america to let them know it was a valid purchase.

    Should have aimed lower -.-

  158. WayUpNorth49 says:

Turns out that none of the checking account options are available to residents of Alaska (I tried clicking through each).

    Nationwide my foot!

  159. bob says:

tried to fund with Wells Fargo Cashwise Visa ($5K for checking & savings). It did not work, despite a $12K CL limit and $10K CA limit. BBVA opened the accounts and demanded a check for funding instead.

    • bob says:

also: got a call from WF (automated, thank goodness) that my card had been locked for a fraud alert – triggered by the first $5K attempt from BBVA.

So..maybe if i’d called WF it wouldn’t have? But oh well.

  160. Jeff G says:

Hmmm, I just messaged BBVA since I was unable to transfer my deposit out. They said my account is frozen and I need to go in branch.

This could be a problem with $5000 in my account…..

    • Jeff G says:

It’s weird because nothing shows up on my account and I just got the email saying my debit card was on it’s way.

      • kirk says:

what do you mean? when you login to bbva there’s NO account? like it was closed and does not appear anymore? weird indeed if that’s the case. seems like it’s not even frozen anymore but closed!?!

        • Jeff G says:

No, sorry wasn’t clear. Nothing on my account indicated a freeze, at least that I could see. Thought I would see big red letters or something.

    • Docta G says:

Were you able to receive trial deposits in your BBVA account that were sent from your external bank? I initiated trial deposits from my USAA account, and they still haven’t shown up in the BBVA account.

  161. Corndogg says:

Funded $5k successfully as a purchase with Alliant Visa Platinum Rewards. I just received a targeted $250 signup bonus after $4k spend so perfect timing. With 2% CB and 0% on BT and Purchases for 12mo.

    • Sam says:

Did your charge ultimately move from pending to posted?

      • Corndogg says:

I’ll stand corrected. Alliant didn’t ever post. It was refunded to the credit card, no notification received yet from either bank and no transaction activity appears for BBVA. Doesn’t look like this works as a funding source.

        • Sam says:

So, it was pending on your credit card, then dropped off without posting? Or did it it show pending on your bank account then never became available?

  162. Chris says:

Couldn’t open as BBVA “couldn’t verify my identity.” U.S. citizen with existing credit card with BBVA. Tried to call in (three different days) but they told me I had to go in branch.

  163. Peter says:

As my earlier comment noted, I opened a checking account on Tuesday but my attempt to fund it with CSR failed. The email hours later asked me to send in a check, like many of your experiences.

I called today to try my luck at CC funding again. With a HUCA, two helpful reps tried investigating and then told me my account is frozen. That is, even if I mail in the check it wouldn’t be processed. The rep is unable to identify the reason my account got frozen, but promised to look into it and call me back

    • Peter says:

Also, like Jeff and Chris above, one of the reps told me that I need to go into a branch to unfreeze my account. I don’t see the logic since whoever froze my account definitely isn’t in a branch… Also there’s no branch in San Francisco. I could go down to the nearest 30 miles away, or I could just ditch this entirely?

  164. Duke I says:

Good luck dealing with this bank. It’s customer service and policies needs a lot of improvement. Your calls may get disconnected, get transferred to several different departments or if you send a message it will take days before you get a response response. They are no Chase. It take 30 days to close the accounts.

If you can get the bonus without ever having to call BBVA for any thing, congrats. If you have to call them before even opening an account avoid yourself the frustration. The $200 bonus isn’t worth it even though I know most want to earn points or cash back from their credit card promo deals from other banks.

  165. Curmudgeon says:

Looks like I made a small mistake. 🙂

My Merrill+ statement closes today. The two $5k charges I made to open my accounts posted as purchases, yesterday. Oops.

Oh well. Getting up to $200 in value on the Merrill card and $200 from BBVA so I guess I’ll live.

Another weird thing – the pending authorizations haven’t disappeared yet even though the charges have posted, so BBVA is eating up $20k of my credit limit. It should drop off in a few days and I don’t plan on using the card any time soon but it’s just odd to have both on there.

  166. Robert says:

update, even if you call BOA before, they won’t necessarily approve the charge, I had it rejected after calling due to the size. now the dilemma is to try again to fund with a card and let the first account close? Will that invalidate the opportunity for the bonus?

Has anybody tried a second account after the first failed with cc funding?

  167. Eddy says:

DP: Tried funding 5k with Chase Marriott, after a few hours got email funding was rejected (probably tried to code as cash advance)

  168. kirk says:

i think my account is also frozen – trial deposit have not posted. eta was yesterday. funny thing is they just sent out the debit card. funnier if it activates. 😀

btw my account started the same as most – online app accepted, cc funding declined but asked to send a check. i didn’t and haven’t called. decided to do online ach funding by linking it to my hub but, like i said, no sign of trial deposit.

i expect this thread to get even messier in the next days/wks. i see a lot of approved app but declined cc funding. if the only way to get this unfrozen is by going to a branch (100+ miles away), i might just have to forego this bank bonus. hopefully closing won’t be as messy as opening coz that would really suck.

*waiting for more DPs like mine and how they ‘resolve’ it. smh.

    • Duke I says:

It takes 30 days for the account to close. And it is not guaranteed. Dealing with BBVA is a hassle.

      • MoreSun says:

It is “not guaranteed”? Please explain. Sarcasm because sometimes they fail to close it (I get that, they sound like a PITA) or actual language from the bank?

  169. DL says:

I opened it with $3K from a BOA Premium Rewards. I had called BOA previously to avoid the fraud alert and it appeared to work. No pending charges showing up on BBVA or BOA yet though.

  170. BW says:

My app wasn’t automatically approved and they want to speak to me on the phone. At this point I’m wondering if it’s even worth opening based on the comments.

  171. Mark says:

I applied for the ClearConnect checking on Nov. 6th and received an email today (Fri.) saying the account had opened. However, the BofA Travel Rewards card initial deposit of 5k did not post.

I called BBVA (I seem to get nice CSR’s on the phone), but they indicated the funding was declined; most likely due to it running as a CA. I am not sure if it was declined as a purchase on BofA’s end as I never received any fraud alert. My CA limit is set to $200.

So, then I figured I would give it a shot on a BBVA savings account. The savings account was immediately approved, but still no pending purchase on my BofA account (different card). I don’t intend to fund the savings account and I will need to read the fine print for early closure penalties. I tried to fund the savings account with a Barclay Arrival+, but of course, no MasterCard funding permitted on BBVA’s part.

No CSR’s mentioned anything about a freeze on my account. Now I am wondering if the trial deposits will go thorough to make the initial $25 deposit within 30 days.

I guess I will just need to be content with the $200 sign-up bonus after one ACH of $300.

    • Duke I says:

The is no fee to close savings or checking account. It take 30 days to close.

    • Freddy says:

No fees to close, I just messaged them to close my account and it was done the next day so YMMV.

      • kirk says:

care to share what made you close the account? did you open it during THIS promo or awhile back?

        • Freddy says:

This was for a previous promo but I was in error on the fee. There is a $25 early closure fee on the savings account if closed within 180 days (in California at least where I am at). I was thinking of the checking account that does not have an early closure fee.

I kept it open for the 180 days so there was no fee at the time and closed it to use the money for another promo.

  172. Mark says:

    Holy goofiness Batman!!

Both BofA accounts now show the funding as pending and I just received this email from BBVA:

“Your Opening Deposit Has Been Processed

    Re: Applicant ##

    Dear Mark

Thank you for taking the final step to open your account with BBVA Compass! The funds are generally credited to your account in two to three days.

    Amount: $5,000.00
    From account: Visa, Credit Card
    From account number:####
    To account number: #####

We have debited these funds from your original funding account and they are generally credited to your new account in two to three days.”

  173. Jeff G says:

Just gave them a call and CSR told me I needed to go in branch to unfreeze. I told him that I did not live within 1000 miles of a branch. He put me on hold, called another department (could not understand which one) and came back and told me my account was all good. Just checked online and I am good to go. Call took about 10 minutes, nice guy.

He asked me a few id questions – last deposit to the account and drivers license number.

    • kirk says:

got an incompetent one. csr was still talking about my cc funding which was already declined the first few hrs of my approved app on 10.06.17. my inquiry was about an external account that im trying to link (with trial deposits) that did not go through. i even mentioned that maybe my account is not fully opened or ‘frozen’ somewhere. she’s basically giving me canned answers and that i have to wait til monday for my cc funding to post. lolz. really??? smh.i just thanked her and will try again monday.

  174. Mimi says:

I tried to open account in my name and I got the message before funding to call for ID verification. I didn’t call but switched browser and opened account for DH. He was approved for clearconnect checking BUT it was a PITA to fund the account. I chose bank account, it wouldn’t take any of our joint checking accounts. Ugh. I switched to Debit/Credit and decided to just use bank Visa DC for $25 to avoid huge headaches that others are reporting. With a minimum amount just to open account, we’ll be glad if we receive the bonus in 60 days after one $300 DD. I already have a preview of what it’s like dealing with this bank, hopefully they prove me wrong…LOL

  175. Roberto says:

Was pleasantly surprised how smooth the UI and website were! Opened checking and savings within 10 mins and was instantly granted online access and routing/account #’s. Already linked with my other accounts and now just waiting on the $5k funding to each account on my Fidelity 2% Visa. Called Elan first to warn of big purchase, asked to lower CA limit but rep said it’s fixed at 25% of CL.

I didn’t have any of the issues that folks are reporting, and in fact, I thought the account opening process was great. I have 2 of 3 bureaus frozen and an initial fraud alert too.

Fingers crossed the cc funding goes through! Thanks as always, DoC!

    • Jeff G says:

Don’t get comfortable! I was in the same place as you and then it became difficult.

    • Freddy says:

Good to hear it’s gone smoothly with you so far. Let us know if your credit card funding goes through as a purchase and you don’t get shutdown or frozen as others have. My Fidelity 2% card arrives next week and hope to be able to use it also.

      • Roberto says:

Got the funding email from BBVA and both charges are showing Pending on my Fidelity Visa. So far so good, so fingers crossed.

        I made them different amounts ($4,985 & $4,995).

        • Roberto says:

Update: Smooth sailing. Purchases posted to my Fidelity Visa, funds available in BBVA accounts. No issues at all so far. Going to do an actual DD from employer just in case, not many DP’s on EFT’s that work.

  176. denise says:

  177. Ben O. says:

I got the message that they couldn’t verify my identity (?). Looks like it’s not even worth calling in based on the other posts. Have to go in branch to open – doesn’t seem like a road trip to AL is worth it just to be rejected.

    • Mimi says:

I got that message prior to funding so instead of calling, I switched browser and applied for DH and he got instantly approved…BUT the funding process was a PITA. I almost gave up on it but when I did a bank DC instead of bank acct number, it finally went through. He had to call because after approval and he was given his account number, $25 initial deposit from a bank debit card went through, he got the message to call to complete opening of his account. Ugh. I’m glad DH was in a good mood and cooperated with the phone call and while he was on the phone, I wrote a note for him to ask the male rep to verify if the $200 bonus was attached to his account and he was told it was and he will get the bonus if he did a one time $300 DD w/in 60 days. I don’t have good vibes with this bank but I hope they prove me wrong and the bonus posts within 60 days. Once the trial deposits go through, I’ll push DD and wait and see.

Michael, I see that the charges of $5,000.00 from BBVA

Does anyone know if being a Simple bank customer (who partners with BBVA Compass) will affect this bonus in terms of being new to BBVA Compass?

  183. Micah Chaney says:

Also seems like you need to keep your account open for 12 months, otherwise they reserve the right to withhold the bonus upon closing.

    Just an FYI.

Still trying to open (system down for maintenance).

    • Curmudgeon says:

This is noted at the top of the page but there are no fees or minimum balance requirements, so leaving a few bucks for a year shouldn’t be an issue.

You DO have a spreadsheet or other tracking method for these bonuses, right? BBVA is my 30th new account in just over a year. I’d be lost without my spreadsheet.

  184. Dave says:

Applied online, a few days later I received the call to prove identity, was told to wait for the next call from another dept which will determine if account will be opened. Jeeeeze

  185. Tim says:

I tried the link and received a “Your external account funding attempt was unsuccessful” message. I attempted to fund the account from my Schwab checking account and I triple checked my information was correct. Anyone else encounter this issue?

  186. weedibix says:

Thank you for this useful post & comments, DoC & community.

Since I already had a BBVA Compass credit card, their system prepopulated the applications once I logged in. Checking and Savings accounts took almost no time to be approved.

I had phoned BoA to alert them to expect the large charges. Both seem to have gone through without a hitch per BBVA, though they are not yet showing at BoA.

BBVA does not function well with Chrome. It is more functional with Safari.

CD accounts are not showing a credit card funding option.

Next steps: completing the bonus requirements; setting up the accounts for transfers.

    • weedibix says:

Update: Consider additional costs, time & admin to access your deposits.

Online, you can ACH to an external bank up to $1000 per transaction, up to $3000 per day, for $3 per transaction.

Or you can order checks for $27.

CR and CR supervisor both say there is no better way.

Anyone have more DP’s on what Bank ACH’s work for DD with BBVA?

  191. Micah says:

I was able to successfully fund my account for $5,000 with my Visa Credit Card. It took about 4 hours to get the confirmation email:

“Thank you for taking the final step to open your account with BBVA Compass! The funds are generally credited to your account in two to three days”

I do see charge pending on my credit card. I used the Citibank Visa Credit Card (for Costco).

    Good luck to everyone.

  192. Joe says:

Note: Watch out guys, Compass charges a $5/month ‘dormant account fee’, which, as of yet, i’m not sure what the minimum activity on the account must be before it’s deemed dormant.

    • Mark says:

Here is the link to disclosures for the ClearConnect Checking for “Other-States”. As far as I can tell, there is no ‘dormant account fee’. Perhaps the fee is listed on the other types of accounts (savings?) and/or other states.

    • Ann says:

I don’t know what Compass’s particular definition is on that, but my procedure (which is more than enough for the dormancy requirements of any financial institution I’ve heard of, most of which require several years of no activity) is: set up annual automated transfer pushing $1 from my primary account to the new account, and another annual automated transfer pulling $1 from the new account back to my primary account, offset by 6 months. So for example, push $1 every November and pull $1 every May.

  193. stacker says:

I called Fidelity Visa before I applied to let them know I would be making a $3500 purchase. Then opened the checking account. Received automated call from Fidelity fraud dept. to confirm the charge. Received email from Fidelity that the $3500 charge was successful. I checked and it’s not showing in my Fidelity account. A few minutes later received email from Compass “We Could Not Fund Your New Account” and they want me to mail a check. WTH?

    • Freddy says:

      Now that’s disappointing to hear.

I was going to use my new Fidelity card when it gets here later this week to also fund the BBVA account based on positive comments above and now your comment puts a damper on it.

Might just use the Merrill+ card since I didn’t see anything negative about it being used.

If you can, keep us posted if you find anything else out.

      • stacker says:

I called Fidelity and they said the charge didn’t go through because it was flagged. They said even if I call ahead of time it may still get flagged. I learned that it’s better to talk to someone from the fraud department because they have more access to adjust the fraud alerts. As for the email saying the charge went through, they claim it was just an account email alert saying a charge was made, not that it went through. They told me to have Compass run the charge again. I doubt Compass will. Told Fidelity nicely if the charge fails again will cancel card because it’s worthless to me.

    • anne says:

I did not even call Fidelity before submitting $3000 funding for my checking account. It went through last week!

  194. kirk says:

yep nothing but trouble with this bank so far. imo this should ba taken down from the best bank account bonuses list. *just my opinion though.

visa cc is suppose to be accepted per their terms and yet lots of negative dps.
positive dps are now actually marred with negative ones all of a sudden.
frozen app and/or accepted then frozen accounts. just lots of problem with initial and post app.
paper statement and overdaft are set ‘opt in’ by default.
also have seen that closing account could be troublesome too.
.. and now i just saw something about dormant fee!?!

my account is still frozen btw. trial deposit never appeared. really debating if i still wanna chase this $200 or not.

    • SamSimon says:

      What is dormant fee?
Yes, strange bank – paper statement and overdaft are set ‘opt in’
I only opened this account because they allow to fund account with $5,000 credit card.

Long story short, “reviewing your application.” Fidelity Visa was not charged.

  196. Jim says:

I was a bit uneasy after all the reports here, but I went ahead with this one. Just opened both the checking and savings accounts, application processed with no issues and I was immediately able to log into online banking and see the accounts.

Funded $5000 into both accounts ($10k total) on a Citi Hilton Honors Visa. I checked my Citi account immediately after finishing the application and did not see anything pending. However, I got an email about an hour later from BBVA stating that my opening deposits had been processed. I logged back into Citi and it showed two pending $5k charges for “BVA COMPASS Visa TransferUS”.

Considering that my CA limit is below $5k, I assume that these will settle as purchases. I’ll update when I can confirm that.

      • Daniel G says:

I’m in the exact same boat. Got the successful funding email on 11/8 for 2 $5k charges on my Alliant Visa. Still not posted to my account.

Looking back I should have timed that better as the charge was made on the last day of the statement and now has a payment due date. Should have waited one more day…

This should work, but you probably want to make sure that the addresses are different on your driver’s licenses or else you might get hung up during the application process.

Was anyone was able to get BBVA Compass to charge their CC again after getting declined? Sent a PM asking if they could and waiting for a response. Will probably try calling tomorrow.

    • Tom says:

I sent them an email asking them to charge the same card again with a lower amount but they replied they could’t if the initial deposit was rejected I would have to send a check or do mobile deposit. I’m just going to ACH transfer money in, should be good enough.

    • TD says:

No, they refused to do it for me after 40 minutes on the phone trying to get them to understand what I was trying to do. So I just opened a second savings account and funded it by CC after preauthorizing it with the card issuer. The app went into review, but I got the approval email today.

    • SamSimon says:

ASAP call your credit card customer service and fix the issue from their end! They will authorize the transaction – it’s their end precaution! Usually transaction declined/rejected forever after second or even third attempt, before that it will keep push/pull the transaction in the loop!

BBVA pretty much has nothing to do with it. But you can always try too.
“Thank you for reaching out to us and thank you for your interest into BBVA Compass Bank. yes, deposit from 11/10 posted.

trial deposits also went through, it’s all good now.

      • kirk says:

yep. my trial dep from chase finally showed up. sending $30 for funding. *fingers crossed* also re-sending Alliant trial dep (first try last wk got rejected. sent them SM about it and perhaps they fixed it(?)). if and when this shows up, i will then ‘DD’ $300 from Fidelity (test DP) but will also setup work DD for good measure.

  215. LAG says:

For what it’s worth, I thought I’d post an update to my previous DP confirming the following that I’ve seen others experience and have concern about.

    Funding DP:
Funded 5k with Merrill+ on 11/7/17 & received confirmation email within an hour
    11/8/17 transaction showed as pending
11/9/17 transaction posted as purchase and funds received @ bbva, but pending transaction never dropped off
    11/13/17 received debit card
11/14/17 pending transaction finally dropped off & original posting still reflects a purchase, not CA.

    External account/Withdraw DP:
11/8/17 immediately setup external account trial deposits
11/9/17 first account posted and withdrew 5k
11/10/17 setup deposit from same external account for $300 for potential DD trigger
    11/14/17 $300 deposit pending @ bbva, but 5k still not withdrawn/pending

A little worried they might have frozen my withdraws based on other DP but since I receive my account setup & debit card in the mail already and haven’t received any other mail or online notification to that affect I expect it may just be an internal processing time difference in the banks. I’ll update once I confirm cleared.

    • anthonyjh21 says:

Damn, seems I’m not the only one experiencing this. I already activated my card and my account is clear and I’ve had no communication from BBVA to believe my account is frozen but based on the ach reversal (R10 unauthorized) that’s the only conclusion I can come to.

I’m hoping it’s a matter of my withdraw being initiated too soon but what I don’t understand is why BBVA allowed it several days prior to issuing my bank with a R10 and pulling it back.

    • LAG says:

11/14/17 $5,000 withdraw initiated 11/9/17 that already posted was reversed and coded as “R16 Frozen account”…

I called BBVA compass to confirm frozen account & why since initial trial (deposits/reversals) & $300 deposit all cleared. They confirmed my account is active (as others have posted as well) and even confirmed the funds are fully available for withdrawal if I so chooose. Furthermore, they stated they had no record of a withdrawal attempt at all and only saw the trial withdrawal. They suggested it might be an issue at my external bank account; although I find it unlikely since I’m using a small CU & others have posted DP with similar issues…

I called my bank (Connexus CU), but they were unable to confirm at first and said they’ll notify me tomorrow when they have confirmed.

It seems more likely the R16 frozen account might just be a default rejection due to NSF as the terms & conditions on the BBVA compass website under each type reference different holding periods placed on deposits based on type; although, CC funding is not specifically mentioned as such a deposit/hold.

Link to terms & conditions disclosure on the account I opened reflecting holds:

Either way, I find this quite infuriating that it’s requiring so much work and now NSF fees, so I’d recommend others hold off until we can get some better DP clarifying what’s going on. It sure seems as those BBVA is just showing poor customer service & overall knowledge of what their own system is doing, but only time will tell.

  216. Danny says:

    Just a single question…

Anyone who got the “we could not verify your identity, come to a local branch blah blah” e-mail a few days after applying.. I wonder if anybody has successfully made a new application, and had the new application for checking get automatically approved?

I was thinking to maybe try it.. though the 11/20 deadline is coming soon.. and I’m not sure whether anyone has tried applying a second time after being rejected the first time.

    • Mimi says:

I got same message on the day I registered. I switched browser used incognito and opened acct for DH. It was instant approval although the process to put funds was challenging, to say the least. All’s well now, the deposit has posted to his account and DD is scheduled to be transfered soon. I hope the worse part is over and we’ll just wait for bonus to post.

      • Danny says:

What is DH? The way it’s written it sounds like it means husband.. Did your own application get rejected? But you applied for someone else and it went through? Did you try a second time to apply for yourself? Thanks!

        • Mimi says:

          DH = dear husband

The way the message was worded on my application was that I have to visit a branch to confirm my identity before they open the account. Knowing that the bonus offer is limited to one per household (HH), I registered for DH and it was approved instantly. No, I didn’t re-apply under my name knowing the limit is one per HH.

I decided not to try for CC funding after reading all possible complications and did only the minimum amount to open account by using a bank Visa debit card. So far, so good for now since the link between bank and bbva has been established.

          • Pete says:

I did the free checking $200 offer a few months back, but would like to help a family member apply for this current iteration.

Thinking maybe we’ll just head into a branch and fund with a check/cash. Hoping in branch app will circumvent the 1/household limit…

  217. TG says:

CC funding from 11/8 still hasn’t deposited into my account. Trial deposits still haven’t shown up. This bank seems like it’s going to be a headache to deal with.

  218. Tom says:

My account has been opened since last week, CC deposit and DD deposits posted to account and shows in my balance. Tried to connect a wells fargo acct today and WF sent me an email stating the trial deposits failed because BBVA said it’s no longer active.

Called BBVA after receiving the email and the rep says my account is active, not frozen.

    • anthonyjh21 says:

I’m having issues with moving funds out of my account as well. Read my post a few comments below. I’m waiting on BBVA explanation before I attempt once more to to have funds withdrawn. I’m wondering if they place a certain number of days hold on any money leaving the account and just failed to mention it as part of the deposit terms?

Either way there’s something here that’s not adding up but I suspect we’re not the only ones having this issue right now.

      • LAG says:

I’ll post an update to my DP, but wanted to reply to you on this directly because my account also received R16 account frozen notice on my external account and funds reversed causing NSF there.

I called BBVA regarding the frozen notice and they stated my account was active too. Furthermore, they stated they had no record of a withdrawal attempt at all and suggested it might be an issue at my external bank account. I called my bank (Connexus CU), but they were unable to confirm at first and said they’ll notify me tomorrow when they have confirmed.

See terms & conditions on the BBVA compass website. Each type of account references a hold placed on deposits, but CC funding is not mentioned, so not sure what kind of hold might be placed especially on a new account, but I suspect this may be the issue even though there is no reference to a hold or a balance available less than what is shown online, so still quite infuriating.

  219. Hodor says:

Is there more than one method to transfer funds to an external account? The only way I see has a limit of $1K/transaction and $3K/day and charges a $3 fee for two-day business delivery (I don’t see a way to change the delivery speed).

  220. anthonyjh21 says:

Had my $5k ach request from my external bank returned to BBVA with a R10 code which apparently means it’s unauthorized by bbva despite the fact the funds were in my external account for several days without issue. No notice from BBVA. Hopefully it’s not an issue with my external bank that will cause eyes or account closure.

Not happy with this but I’m still trying to get to the bottom of it. Either way, it’s obvious this bank is all over the place and a rat race judging the comments here.

    • Tom says:

I put in a $5k withdrawal pull from another bank earlier. Hopefully, it doesn’t get rejected, but wouldn’t be surprised if it did at this point. Also, the $5k charge posted to my credit card, but there is also a $5k BBVA charge pending, so it’s eating up $10k of my credit at BOA.

      • anthonyjh21 says:

I was hit with a $15 fee as well. Compass bank was removed as an external bank account option too.

        • kirk says:

curious to know which bank charged you.

          • anthonyjh21 says:

Alliant CU. It was for the $300 that I transferred to BBVA. When the R10 was issued it basically forced my bank to refund $5k to BBVA which also led to the external account and any other transfers being killed and funds moved back. I can’t blame Alliant. This is on BBVA and it’s not even close.

        • Mimi says:

If it’s your first time, you can request for one time courtesy waive of fee and they’ll grant it. It happened to me in the past with MTB where I made a transfer twice w/o realizing it. Slapped with fees from both but got them waived just by sending SM to both banks admitting my mistake.

          • anthonyjh21 says:

Yeah, unfortunately it’s not my first time…that was when Insight didn’t play nicely with the bank and I was slapped with two $15 fees which were reversed upon request. Not sure if I want to try my luck again but we’ll see. It really should be Compass Bank that eats the charge.

      • Jon says:

Tom, did the second $5k charge drop?

  221. Darv says:

My first experience with BBVA was an NBA Amex card which offered $200 after $1,000 spend. I had to CFPB them because it took them months to post the bonus, it was a saga.

My second experience was last December when I opened a checking account with a $150 promotion. Funded $5k on Cap1 cash back card (pre-dates Quicksilver). Initially coded as cash advance but reverted to purchase when it posted. Beyond that, was dinged with $3 paper statement fee twice, long story short they did a website update and my profile changes weren’t saved.

Oh, and one time I spent over 45 minutes on phone hold and finally gave up.

It usually takes about a calendar week for them to return secure messages.

Just got my debit card in the mail yesterday for this latest promotion. The number on the card does not work for activation. I managed to get it activated through their mobile wallet app, but that was hardly intuitive.

My best advice with BBVA is to have low expectations.

  222. Kevin says:

11/7: $5,000 CC charge for checking account posts to BoA card
11/8: $5,000 checking deposit posts to BBVA account
11/8: $5,000 CC charge for savings account posts to BoA card
11/14: $5,000 CC refund for savings account posts to BoA card

    • Daryl J says:

Hi, could you please tell me which specific BOA credit card you used? And were you able to lower the CA limit on that card first? Thanks

  223. ppsh says:

So is BBVA CC funding really not working with MasterCard? Any positive DP funding with MC?

  224. john555 says:

hmmmmm is it worth the effort for CC funding…..seems like lower amounts have better success?

  225. Everyone is pretty excited about the 5k credit card funding, but for those just doing the traditional direct deposit of $300, the process has been top to bottom terrible. It took me six days to be able to login, long waits, in person bank visits.

  226. psh says:

It’s challenges like this one that make this game fun to play (and obviously all the rewards too!). I’ll be happy if I get the bonus and the CC funding, but you win some, you lose some.
I’m going to apply tonight and I’ll post my DP later.

  227. Max says:

CC funding DP. Tried to fund 5k for checking and 2.5k for savings (my cl is only 7.5k) with the Quicksilver Visa. The 2.5k charge processed first and I approved the fraud alert. Processed successfully as a regular purchase. Cap 1 declined the second charge so it did not go through.

    • Kay says:

I’m curious about the reason why one funding went through and the other did not. My guess is that, based on DPs from others, the pending amount does not drop until a few days after the funding is posted. That could mean that you need double the funding amount in your available credit. For your situation, the first one ($2,500) went through because you still have $5,000 CL left, which covers another $2,500 as pending. So you only have $2,500 CL left, which is why $5,000 funding got declined.

      • kirk says:

very interesting observation. hmm it does apply to my declined cc funding last week. used my 10k cl blispay card to fund 5k but only had around 8k available when i app.

i hope people would see your post and comment some more coz i think you might be onto something here. basically stating if 2x of their funding amount was available on their card during their app. especially the fidelity visa card holders as this seem to be the one with lots of mixed dps.

  228. Jason says:

DP: Funded with Navy Federal Flagship Rewards Visa and posted as a purchase

  229. Prem says:

Should i open both Checking and Savings account at same time or they can be opened separately (one today and other maybe 5 to 7 days later)?

Can both be funded with different CC’s or has to be Same one?

Lastly, any DP bout Citi AA card/Chase Fdom or S’ire cards for successful Funding?

    • Jeff G says:

I opened them a couple of days apart and used the same credit card – USAA Limitless Visa.

Both funded and are working well.

      • Prem says:

Awesome, and happy for you. Any DP bout Citi AA card/Chase Fdom or S’ire cards for successful Funding?

      • Mimi says:

Have you tried withdrawing your funds that came from CC and did it go through? If you did, you’re the first DP I’ve seen that was able to siphon out their funds via ACH pull to their bank a week after deposits posted at bbva.

  230. Joe says:

What a nightmare. Funded the $1000 into the account, then deposited random amounts of 300+ to my account via WF, Ally, and Chase. I wake up to an email stating Ally froze my account due to not being able to pull $500 out of my BBVA account (with a 2k+ balance) due to it being frozen. Chase also sends an email saying transfer can’t deposit into BBVA account due to it being frozen. I go to branch. Most unprofessional degenerate bank I’ve ever seen. TCF looks like the Ritz compared to this place. Ayways, I ask why my account is froze. I get some hokey chick telling me that it’s not and that Chase, Wells Fargo, AND Ally all are having issues on their end. Hmmm all at the same time right? I ask what it is to close my account—$25 if less than 6 months open. Took it all out in cash but $10. If my Ally or WF DD clears and I get the bonus, so be it but I’m done with this bank. Now I’m locked from Ally transfers for 1-2business days until the account services department can check it out, then they will decide what to do with me. Never again.

    • anthonyjh21 says:

I feel your pain. My Alliant account is locked to $250 transfer limit right now that I’m currently inquiring about and hoping they are able to remove. It’s my hub account and had I known this would happen I’d never do it for $200 + CC funding. I have 10k sitting in the account and I’m afraid to even touch a damn penny of it right now. Definitely turning into HSBC Lite over here as far as issues and not having any answers other than to blame other banks.

      • Joe says:

Yup. I would have never opened it if it meant I risk relationships with all these other banks I actually use. I have some invstments with Ally and keep most of my money there, I use it as my hub account and to funnel it into my WF/Chase for my everyday spending. Best of luck to us!

  231. Mayer Weingarden says:

Can i close the savings account and pay the $25 etf while keeping the checking account open to preserve the bonus?

  232. Mike says:

They couldn’t verify my identity. Anyone and this issue?

    • Mayer Weingarden says:

Ditto, they denied me by saying they couldn’t verify my identity and I have to come in branch to open the account. Anyone able to get around this, maybe send in a 2nd app?

      • Danny says:

        I’ve been asking for a week… 🙁

so far nobody has shared an experience about trying a 2nd time and whether it could be successful or not. I’m thinking of trying it… but also don’t want my account or money frozen… but time is running out for this relatively easy $200.. choices choices. This is the first bank account I’ve ever been denied for… yet other people it’s been so easy.. so that’s another frustrating thing.

        • Deb says:

Don’t know if this helps, last week got the dreaded “thank you for applying..bla bla bla ..unfortunately we need to manually review your application” message. Called Compass Monday, rep said my app was cancelled “by customer”?? Very strange. I applied again, but this time I went thru Safari instead of Google Chrome and it went thru and approved immediately.

  233. Mimi says:

Those who have branches nearby can try withdrawing their funds days after they’re posted to see if they can pull out most, while leaving a small amount, to keep it open until bonus posts. Since there’s no maintenance fees, just mark your calendar on the 60th day when bonus should’ve posted.

Advantage of this is avoidance of possible NSF from the bank that pulls funds via ACH transfer in case BBVA freezes/locks account. It is also a quick way to find out if account is locked/frozen if one goes to the branch to withdraw from “available funds”.

  234. Mike M says:

Yeesh, sound like some terrible experiences so far. BBVA (thus far) has been extremely easy for me but I didn’t go for the elusive 5k funding.

Opened account online with an initial $25 deposit from a debit card. Initial $300 DD posted last Friday. Now just waiting on the bonus.

Instead of trying to push or pull any money from BBVA (seems like that’s where some problems are arising) I will just leave the 300 there and pay bills with it and do the same with the bonus.

    • Mimi says:

This is our plan as well. Once the DD posts I’ll let it sit there for several business days before doing B/P while leaving a small amount to keep account open. Hope to see the bonus by January 2018.

I didn’t want to deal with possible complications from CC funding, would be glad to get the bonus.

    • sara says:

what did you use to DD?

  235. Danny says:

I decided to “be the datapoint that I need” and sacrifice myself. My first application got the dreaded “we cannot verify your identity, come to a branch” message. So I waited 5 days and just tried applying again. Different browser, etc. Just got the message again that my application needs to be manually reviews and they will “call in 24 – 48 hours.” The same message as the first time applying.

I’ll see what happens and update on how it goes.

  236. Gadget says:

POSITIVE DP FOR IDENTITY ERROR: Clear all browser cookies/cache & use incognito.

I tried at least 4 times this morning to apply, using different variations for phone number (home vs cell), (street type spelled out vs. abbreviated), (middle initial vs none). I tried Chrome, IE, and Firefox “private” on my home computer, and even turned off WiFi on my phone, then tried Chrome on Android. No – Go! Instant identity verification error every time.

This annoyed the heck out of me because I have lived at the same address for 15+ years and have had (almost) no issues with MANY other banks. Seen positive DP above for my state (VA) so I knew it SHOULD be possible if you can just get past the “computer” screening. I wasn’t giving up.

SOLUTION: Used a program called CCleaner to purge my computer browser history & temp files. (not a product endorsement – use whatever program you want to clear your browser history/cache) After that, opened Chrome incognito window and pasted “” into the address bar, not going thru any other links.

That’s how I got to the funding page. Accepted my US Bank Flex Perks Visa CC. Application moved onto the selecting a user name for online banking, and disclosure info pages.

Last page I got to said: “Thank you for your application. Your application is currently under review. A BBVA Compass representative will be contacting you (usually within 24-48 hours) to discuss the application and request any additional information that may be needed. Feel free to reach out to us at
877-737-7727 with any questions regarding the status of your application. Your application ID is ###”

Near-instant e-mail recv. says “We’ll give you a call soon to discuss.”

Used US Bank Visa CC for 5K. Charge not showing under the US Bank, yet. Fingers crossed. I will update with the result.
