[Expired] [CT, DE, MA, MI, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, VT] Citizens Bank $200/$400/$600 Checking Bonus

Deal has expired, view more bank account bonuses by clicking here.

Update: The promo code now automatically appears after entering your zip code.

Warning: No promo code is automatically applied so I’m worried that this bonus won’t work. My gut feel is that it’s supposed to be targeted with a unique promo code required but the terms don’t say anything regarding this.

The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • Citizens Bank is offering a bonus of up to $600 when you open a new One Deposit Checking or Citizens Bank Platinum Checking. The bonus you receive depends on the direct deposit you set up the account to receive:
    • $500 direct deposit: $200 bonus
    • $1,000 direct deposit: $400 bonus
    • $2,000 direct deposit: $600 bonus
  • Direct deposit received needs to be by a specific month based on when the account was opened, check landing page for the dates.

The Fine Print

  • To qualify for a new checking bonus you must open your first new personal checking account, excluding Student Checking, between 1/31/19 and 5/16/19 and have at least one single direct deposit post to your new checking account by the date stated in the table below based on your account open date.
  • Bonus amount and payout date will vary (see tables below for details).
  • Direct Deposit is recurring income electronically deposited into your Citizens Bank checking account and may include salary, pension, Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits and other regular monthly income.
  • Primary signer on the new account may not be or have been a primary or secondary signer on any Citizens Bank personal checking or savings accounts within the previous six months.
  • The new account must be open and in good standing to qualify for this offer. Offer may be withdrawn without notice and cannot be combined with any other offer.
  • In order to be eligible to participate in this promotion, the customer must open their first new personal checking account via Citizens Bank’s online account opening system accessed by clicking on the link on this page.
  • Customer should print this screen for their records. Customer may only be paid a bonus associated with this program one time.
  • If you meet all the checking account requirements the new checking bonus will be deposited to your new checking account by the date stated in the table below.
  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

Monthly Fees

Citizens Bank One Deposit Checking Account $9.99 Monthly Fee

The One Deposit checking account comes with a $9.99 monthly fee. Fee is waived by making one deposit each statement period. (According to this comment they really do count any deposit – even a transfer from another Citizens Bank account will trigger this.)

Citizens Bank Platinum Checking Account $25 Monthly Fee

Citizens Bank Platinum Checking: $25 fee is waived with $25,000 in combined deposits

Early Account Termination Fee

As far as we know there is no early account termination fee.

Our Verdict

There is a public $200/$450 bonus, this bonus is better because it’s bigger ($600 max vs $450) and you can also do the one deposit account and still get a bonus of $400/$600. Because of that I will be adding this to our list of the best checking bonuses.

FYI, last time this was offered, they up and closed my account after I did my initial deposit and then linked a couple of accounts for transfers. I may try again on a future bonus but I’ll be surprised if I’m not permabanned. Be careful.

Why was your account closed?

Sorry to hear this happened to you. Did you push $2000 right away? or send some smaller amounts first? I am going to try to be very patient with this one because I don’t want to blow it. I will push some small amounts first and gradually build up. Also I will schedule some cc payments too. The deadline for the DD is end of May so taking it slowly.
I have had an account just close on me out of nowhere too with no answers & rude by phone and left me hanging. Stinky Popular Bank..

Popular did the same thing to me. I can’t precisely recall the reason they gave but whatever it was, was an outright lie. Happily I’d already received their bonus and didn’t care about using it as a long term checking account, but it was really silly because they have a branch like 3 blocks from my office, and I almost assuredly could have taken care of whatever the problem was with a personal visit; had they but advised me of it.

At your own risk… those of us who opened accounts around October-November are still waiting for the bonus. I did a “DD” so no point in filing a complaint or calling the bank.
Edit: referring to the first paragraph regarding promo code

When I applied last year, a promo code wasn’t applied and the bonus didn’t come through by the end of the period they specified. Had to CFPB them to get someone to even respond to my inquiries (customer service and marketing are incredibly slow – I waited over a month and no one had touched my initial inquiry), and in the end they told me to pound sand because I didn’t enter a promo code.

Taking a screenshot of the bonus screen like they recommend doesn’t do squat – eventually they sent me a letter saying “if you had done this right, you would have clicked the link on this page and the promo code would have been loaded” with a picture of the promotion landing page. Funnily enough, my CFBP complaint including a dated and timestamped screenshot of that exact page.

Definitely beware – I’d recommend avoiding the platinum checking account so you’re not getting hit with $25 monthly fees while you wait for them to give you the run-around. If you haven’t gotten your bonus within 1.5 months of your DD, it’s probably not happening.

CFPB is the most useless toothless tiger organization. Can’t arbitrate. Just like a really bad post office between two parties.

Same exact thing happened to me. Screenshot, CFPB, phone calls and citizens wouldn’t take any responsibility and CFPB said they act only when many people are affected, and gave Wells Fargo unauthorized account opening as an example.

I chatted with a banker. They said that there is no promo code but when I pushed her on it, she said she couldn’t give a guarantee that there is no promo code.

Skip for now.

I never received the $400 bonus last year either. I’m not going to try again.

I received a targeted mailer with a Promo Code. Unfortunately I have to wait a few more months to meet the six-months requirement from having closed a previous account.

Burned by this last time round like others. No promo code attached when I clicked on the offer posted directly on Citizens site. Clown bank bonus bro.

So the $450 offer is also a waste of time without a promo code? Because I don’t see it linked from their main page, so I don’t see how it’s any better than this $600 offer. Neither appear public. I could legit fulfill the requirements so how can they possibly advertise this and still deny you without ANY mention in requirements of a promo code in fine print? That’s downright fraudulent.

I just did the $450 bonus (haven’t received it yet). Promo code is automatically applied when you click through to the account registration form.

I hope this bonus would be around when I become eligible again in 5-6 months.

never bother with citizens. They just systematically cheat. Me and wife did it last year, targeted offer from mail, genuine DD, no bonus so far.

William Charles There *is* a PromoCode in the URL when you click the Open Account button.
In fact, there are 2 promo codes in the URL.

The 1st one does not change when I try different browsers in Incognito mode. The second one changes every time. This leads me to believe the 1st one (48W94956656) is specific for this Promotion and the 2nd one is a unique code per visitor.

These were the Query Fragments in the URLs I saw –

Platinum Checking ?productid=295&promocode=48W94956656&promocode=19WZB43765110
One Deposit Checking ?productid=257&promocode=48W94956656&promocode=19WZB43765110

Platinum Checking ?productid=295&promocode=48W94956656&promocode=19WZB32719897
One Deposit Checking ?productid=257&promocode=48W94956656&promocode=19WZB32719897

Edit 1: For anyone applying for this bonus, I’d recommend they right click the Open Account button and save the complete link in their documentation before proceeding to apply.

Edit 2: I verified with the link for the other $450 bonus and the promocode does begin with “19WZ”. For that bonus, the URL has “ODSPromoCode” as the 1st parameter and “promocode” as the 2nd parameter. May be Citizens did not code the URL parameters correctly for this bonus. and also did not

I waited 3 months for my bonus from last October/November and finally just closed the account before fees hit. I used 3 different “DD’s” so I can’t really complain but the account was a pain to open, a pain to fund and a general distraction overall. It was even a pain to close because of “slow computer’s” on the rep’s end and endless pitches to downgrade it to something with no fees. I doubt I’ll ever go back to Citizen’s.

Why was this a pain to fund?

Opened your link to offer, clicked “open account”. This brings me to https://applynow.citizensbank.com/openaccount/acs?externalProductIds=222&promocode=NNXXXNNNNNNNN#!/acctopening

After entering in zip code it auto fills the promo code field with NNXXXNNNNNNNN. Looks like we’re in business. Obviously replaced actual promo with NNXXXNNNNNNNN, but I don’t think its a unique code

Hmm, I just tried to check this one out and it appears the promo code is automatically applied after I entered my zip code (similar to another person’s experience below). Was this not the case a few days ago?

Also, just to make sure I understand this right… you can get the $600 bonus with the One Deposit checking account for this offer?

Lastly, I just recently applied for the Platinum checking account for the $450 public bonus so I’m not sure if I’m eligible to go and open a one deposit account to go for the $600 offer or am I?
I looked at the fine print and saw that “Primary signer on the new account may not be or have been a primary or secondary signer on any Citizens Bank personal checking or savings accounts within the previous six months.” I was reading the verdict and was confused but maybe you can do both offers only if you open both the platinum and the one deposit accounts at the same time on the same application?

I just did the application today, a promo code was applied to my application. I was told that there was one promo code for this promotion not three different ones, and the amount of your bonus would be based on the size of your DD.

Jack - NJ

Had the same question, but it seems based on the fine print that you would only be able to get one bonus, since you will be a “primary signer” after opening a single account. Either way, good luck with the promo code issue. It auto-filled for me when I provided my zip code, but from dp’s above, it seems like it may have autofilled the 450 offer…

Pablo

Yeah, nevermind. Disregard what I said. Read the verdict section incorrectly. Anyway, bummer, but oh well.
