Avoiding Fees

Monthly Fees

Citizens Bank One Deposit Checking Account $9.99 Monthly Fee

The One Deposit checking account comes with a $9.99 monthly fee. Fee is waived by making one deposit each statement period. (According to this comment they really do count any deposit – even a transfer from another Citizens Bank account will trigger this.)

Green Savings $4.99 Monthly Fee

The $4.99 monthly fee on this account is waived with a minimum daily balance of $200+

Citizens Bank Platinum Checking Account $25 Monthly Fee

Citizens Bank Platinum Checking: $25 fee is waived with $25,000 in combined deposits

Early Account Termination Fee

As far as we know there is no early account termination fee.

Our Verdict

The $200 bonus is the same that is currently available. The $450 bonus is $50 more than the current $400 bonus but there is no savings offer available with this. Personally I think the $450 bonus is better than the $400 + $100 bonus. You’ll have to pay a few monthly fees if you don’t want to have $25,000 tied up, but it’s worth it considering it’s a $450 bonus. We will be adding it to this our list of best bank bonuses.

Haha, wow, posted just as I came here to look. And me just past the six-month mark. Thanks, Doc.

It says “Customer may only be paid a bonus associated with this program one time”.

Maybe, but it also says a new customer is anyone who hasn’t had an account for six months. Guess I’ll find out.

I’m not sure how strict they are with this language as I, and many others, have received multiple bonuses with Citizens in the past.

Dylan

So you are sying the terms arent actually enforced? Hmm.

Kyle

Possibly. I am in the process of finding out.

Robert m, Are you sure we cannot churn it? “Customer may only be paid a bonus associated with this program one time” maybe they mean THIS specific ongoing program, so offer cannot be paid two or three times within ongoing promo dates…. maybe I’m just making stuff up to make me will better. Or maybe it’s not enforced… 🙂

Based on previous accounts, it appears people were able to churn with this kind of promotion at this bank. Not a guarantee that they will be able to churn it this time but it seems like a good chance to give it a shot at trying to go for this sign up bonus if you’re thinking about churning.

Reference: https://www.doctorofcredit.com/ct-de-ma-mi-nh-nj-ny-oh-pa-ri-vt-citizens-bank-400-checking-bonus/ (ctrl+f and search “churn” and you will see a couple posts from Dan – Legal Bank Robber)

Has some odd language “open your first new account” and “only one bonus with this promo” does that mean people that had in the past can get assuming they are past the six months since having an account?

notsurprised
notsurprised

The previous 6 months for not having an account would be from the close date of the previous account, right?

In my experience, this has been the case.

Have out-of-state folks been able to open this online? I ask because this is meant to be online only and only seems to work with zip codes in their branch footprint.

Has someone found a way to open this in-branch instead with the same bonus?

I started the app with a bank branch zip code, hoping to change it later – but it is read-only later on in the app when you have to end your home address.

Would like to know about this as well

Anyone attempt this yet out of state?

Closed my last Citizens account in October after finally getting $150 bonus which I had to file a CFPB for. Looks like I’ll miss the 6 month cutoff (3/21) to churn this bonus again :/ :/

Aaron
Aaron

does it go by the closed date?.. i thought it was the open date…i could be wrong

Phil
Phil

Interested in this as well. If it’s open date, I could do this one again.

Other thread has code / promo code issues. The URL shows 2 codes, I wonder if we need to apply those manually or risk not getting the bonus?

UPDATE: After closing browser and opening it again, the promo code appeared after I made my new account selection, so probably make sure this happens. I see for platinum this code: 19WZT04752099

Yet Another Redditor

If the link to open account does not put in a code, the code from the URL is 19WZT26541768. It is the same code for the current promotion for either of the accounts. The ProductIds variable in the URL determines the type of account.

Chris
Chris

Interesting, looks like it auto generates with different zip codes and instances. Might be single use codes?

SamSimon
SamSimon

What are you talking about? promo codes based on zip codes, auto fill….

Chris
Chris

When you click on the link to the offer above, it takes you to the promotion splash page. Once you click on the offer you want and press open account, it takes you to zipcode and promo code page.

SamSimon
SamSimon

I see now, it’s a glitch! Now it doesn’t work! The promo code is not generating! And account type is not auto attaching to the application after clicking “open account” checking!

Will need to look at past Citizens Bank Promos mentioned on this website and see if the language they used is similar to what is written now for churning (also will need to read up comments… will let you guys know if I find something or post back here if you end up finding it before I do).

Language from this new offer:
* For both offers: Primary signer on the new checking account may not be or have been a primary or secondary signer on any Citizens Bank personal checking account within the previous six months.

* In order to be eligible to participate in this promotion, customer must open their first new Platinum Checking or One Deposit via Citizens Bank’s online account opening system accessed by clicking on one of the links on this page.

* Customer may only be paid a bonus associated with this program one time.

NOTE:
For those trying to minimize monthly fees… best bet is to try to time opening this account with your next direct deposit so you don’t waste any time. And as soon as bonus posts… downgrade the account. I did this last time and I believe I was able to avoid any monthly fee with the Platinum checking. If I remember right (don’t quote me on this), I think they waived the monthly fee for 2 months.

Yup, looks like people were able to churn this kind of offer a few times. I will definitely have to add this to my list of accounts to open again when I’m eligible.

See: https://www.doctorofcredit.com/ct-de-ma-mi-nh-nj-ny-oh-pa-ri-vt-citizens-bank-400-checking-bonus/ (just do ctrl+f and search for “churn” and read the posts. Someone named Dan – Legal Bank Robber is churning for the 3rd time at Citizens Bank. They were able to get a bonus successfully by applying for the platinum account a couple times.

The following language popped up in previous sign up bonus fine print:

* Primary signer on the new checking account may not be or have been a primary or secondary signer on any Citizens Bank personal checking account within the previous six months.

* In order to be eligible to participate in this promotion, the customer must open their first new personal checking account via Citizens Bank’s online account opening system accessed by clicking on the link on this page.

* Customer may only be paid a bonus associated with this program one time.

I am curious to compare this with the $400 bonus. According to DoC its still available. However the link is showing that this one has ended. https://www.citizensbank.com/promotion/platinum/cash-offer-400.aspx
Is there another $400 bonus link? TIA

https://www.citizensbank.com/promotion/checking/cash-offer-500.aspx

I just applied using the above link (just for the $400 account) and it as the same language regarding the new account. I wonder if I get them to match the $450, I doubt it…

Chris
Chris

Ron – in the text above there’s a link to the $500 offer, which is a $400 checking and a $100 savings offer.

That link actually says $400 checking and $200 Savings…interesting!

The $450 bonus sounds like a great, great deal!!!!! Also very easy to meet the requirements.

Too bad I don’t live in one of the qualified states.

I guess I will have to borrow a friend’s MA address to get this one!

I just signed up for the $400 offer a couple of weeks ago. Has anyone ever tried to get Citizen to match?

Application was accepted this time after having been declined back when this was offered in November–I’m assuming because I removed the fraud alert from my EQ report.

Anyone have luck with waived monthly fees? I know the other deal was waiving it for the first three months

This is the response I got from customer service via online chat.

“To provide customers with time to properly fund their Platinum Checking account, monthly maintenance fees are not imposed: Until after three statement periods for *NEW* accounts.”

Has anyone signed up and been able to downgrade the Platinum Checking account?

Kumar

Yes. I was able to downgrade Platinum account after getting the bonus to one deposit account. Fees was not charged to my account for first two statements.

Good to know! Thanks for your help.

Nathan

Doesn’t it take 90 days for the bonus to post? How did you not get hit with fees for the first 3 months?

HBK
HBK

Yeah, would you mind elaborating on the fees? Did you wait 3 months and then downgrade it after the bonus posted and not have any fees during that time?

My wife got both the 150 and 400 bonuses. I went for the 150 and 200 (same type of account) and did not get the 2nd one. I think you can get one of each, hers posted pretty fast. YMMV.

Kyle
Kyle

DP, I was able to successfully churn this account in 2017 and 2018. Will be doing it again in 2019. Not sure if it will still work, but I think it’s worth a shot.

ChurningFast

Did you get bonuses for different or same account type? That’s the important question.

Kyle
Kyle

Good question. I looked and it appears they were two different bonuses ($200 & $400) so likely different accounts.
