The Fine Print

  • Valid from December 4th – December 10th, 2016

Our Verdict

It’s a bit strange as there is no promo code listed and generally GCM requires a promo code. It’s also listed as 5% off on the left side and then an extra 5% on your load in the main body of the promo. You don’t get an instant 5% discount when ordering, so I assume if it’s working correctly then you should get an extra 5% loaded to your card.

A few important things to note:

  • We can’t be sure this promotion is currently working correctly, my suspicion is that cards will have an extra 5% loaded to them but who knows.
  • These cards earn 5% back on select retailers
  • Topcashback & SimplyBestCoupons (my referral link) are both offering 1.25% cash back on Visa gift cards purchases
  • GiftCardMall has a history of canceling orders for no real reason

Simon Mall are also waiving the fees on 5 back Visa gift cards.

Do if I load $500, then the card will be shipped with a $525 balance? Is it even possible for these cards to have a balance higher than $500?

Evan

I wouldn’t think so.

Why not

Why not? They sell 1K cards.

Evan

I’ve found it goes only up to $500 for these ones. Where did you see the 1K ones?

Once upon a time I messed it up at Kroger and ended up with $503 balance on my $500 Visa Gift Card.

One never knows.

I am not sure if I want to use my Amex Platinum for this but seems like a good deal

Do NOT use for Plat to make Min spend; only several mos AFTER min spend met. AX will know you did MS on this due to the merchant name!

Thank you. I used my Merrill Lynch card to pay for 500 GC. got a call for second review and it seems like it’s approved. I did ask if they can find where the 5% cash bonus will come from. I was directed to Customer service, which was rude and useless and dc my call without hearing a word.

I bought target gift card at a discount on my Platinum. Hopefully, they don’t consider this MS or Target does not report L3 data. Anyone chime in?

Frank
Frank

I bought target gift cards for an Amex card that later went under financial review. The financial review rep asked me about the target purchase that included those gift cards asking why it was such a high purchase ($800+) and asked if I purchased any electronics or gift cards. I assume no L3 data otherwise they wouldn’t of asked. Came out of the FR without any problems.

They are contacting individual retailers to inquire about the transactions in question. As someone who was involved in a clawback and tried to fight it legally. you better not push the boundaries. Amex clause specifically states the exclusion of GCs from counting toward eligible point earning spend. Any large denomination payments will surely be looked at. First they award pts, then freeze, perhaps free them up, and then claw. Any legal claim activity has been completely deferred to their MR team whom sympathizes with the BS but has no power. Pay insurance, car pmt, or anything else you have but don’t attempt to pull the wool over their eyes as they are fighting our activities tooth and nail on lucrative Platinum sign up bonuses.

Can you buy MO at Walmart with these?

Nathan
Nathan

No. Registers are coded not to accept them

Bodiddely
Bodiddely

Really? I’ve used regular GCM and Simon Fivebacks for WM MO with no issue. If GCM sold Fivebacks cards did not work at WM that would be the first instance of Metabank VGCs not working (aside from the YMMV style/dining anywhere ones).

ur talking about another GC man…

Dan

You should be able to.

At least at my WM, they don’t work. BHN says it is running as a cash advance and so the charge is being denied on their end. This is at a Supercenter MoneyCenter. What’s odd is that a month ago it worked, but last Monday it stopped working. I suspect it has to do with the new payment terminal / POS they installed. I haven’t been able to test other MB-issued cards, but I’d be worried of other BIN numbers were implicated.

Considering USPS is a no-go for this, and Kroger looks to be on life support, I’d take a good hard look at your liquidation options before delving into this deal.

Maybe the system does not reflect the promotion yet.
The website says ” The discount will be reflected in the Order Summary in your shopping cart.”; however, nothing is applied on the summary page. I would wait until they fix it.

Steve
Steve

That could also just be generic wording on the website that they didn’t bother to clarify for this deal. Maybe in this case the discount isn’t supposed to show up in Order Summary. Or, if they load an extra 5% on the card, then the amount shown in Order Summary already reflects the discount (e.g., if you’ll receive a $525 card, but Order Summary shows you’re paying $500, then that reflects the discount). Technically the discount isn’t “5% off” (25/525 is more like 4.76% off), but that’s probably just more sloppy wording.

I saw a data point somewhere a little while ago where someone claimed to see a sign in a store advertising an initial 5% bonus loaded onto the card (I don’t remember the store). Anyway, we already know that Five Back cards can have 5% of purchases credited back to them after you use them, so it would make some sense that in this case they could add 5% initially.

i got my order cancelled.

Did you get the message about your card being declined after you submitted or did it go through with an email confirmation and then cancelled later?

Skor

Added to cart, tried to sign in before checkout, got the message – account was temporarily locked

AB

The promo doesn’t appear to be working. It is supposed to be 5% off at checkout but that isn’t applying. I’d suggest waiting on it.

Good luck trying to order this. GiftCardMall is prickly in the best of circumstances. I was buying a couple of these last week (without the supposed extra 5%), and I seem to have gotten some orders in. Today, my similar orders wouldn’t go through. It’s like paypal’s weirdness, only worse.

Superworm
Superworm

Exactly – Got this email: Order #XXXXXXXX, placed through Simon, has been cancelled. The order was unfortunately not approved by our security screening process and, as a result, your gift card(s) will not be shipped.

They would never respond to me as to why. But my previous orders of dominos and target gift cards would process….

Wyle

Netting a bonus around 12% seem worth a shot.

Jason
Jason

5% bonus on $1K order is $50. Way too generous. They will lose too much with this offer; something does not seem right.

RJ
RJ

I have a feeling they’re headed for bankruptcy and they’re going to take down as many customers as possible. This seems too good to be true. If you order 5,000 wortth of gift cards and going through a CB portal, you’re getting back at least 7% in money back ($350). repeat every day from the 4th to the 10th, and tell me why this isn’t the best deal of the year.

bob
bob

only if they would allow such big orders to be processed……….one would be lucky if it happens….hell this rascal website cancels even $500 giftcard orders………..who on earth would be lucky to get his/her $5000 order processed?

TJ
TJ

RJ, if you do this for 7 days in a row that would be 70 $500 gift cards. How many trips to the money order counter do you plan on making?

Bodiddely
Bodiddely

Losses will naturally be limited by GCMs super paranoid ordering system. Seems to only let me place one order for 3x $500 every week or so. Kicking myself for ordering on Friday lol, hope I get at least one in under the promo. As to the suggestion that they are near bankrupt, that’s far from the case. The company is publicly traded and from all indications seems to be doing fine.

is it possible to use this 5 back gift card for Walmart bill pay ?? and also to load netspend visa debit card ??

Will work fine for WM billpay. I’m not familiar with Netspend.

Strange that I ordered 5 VGC during Thanksgiving promotion ($5 fee off with code 5OFF), all 5 orders processed and received the first card last week already. Tried to order the Five Back card since Sat night 12/3 with saved credit card but GCM declined it. There must be a certain limit on the purchase amount within a certain period of time per account, otherwise I cannot think of what makes it appears as “GCM has a history of cancelling orders without real reason”

Mser
Mser

GCM is truly one of the screwiest companies to deal with. No rhyme nor reason why things get declined outside the $15K/mo limit on gc purchases. Talking to a CSR/manager is futile – they have no idea what is going on/or won’t tell you. Either way, hugely frustrating. I gave up after trying for a few months after my account was flagged for relatively minor purchases (maybe a few K over a few months).

JASON
JASON

Hello DOC, noticed the change today 12/5 when I try to place an order, you should be seeing this now:

Five Back Visa $500.00
Subtotal $500.00
Fees $5.95
Promo Discount -$25.00
Shipping $_.__
TOTAL $480.95

That’s insane! Even better than the Thanksgiving $5 off promo!

John
John

What about those of us who already ordered? I just put in a request to find out.

Tim
Tim

I called Gift Card Mall customer service at 1-877-426-2551. I waited on hold for less than 5 minutes and then was connected with Christine. She informed me that the card I ordered last night was already in process and may ship. They were able to refund my order and cancel the balance on my card. So I may have a $0 balance card show up and she said the $505.95 will be refunded within 1-15 days.

I then placed a new order for a card at the $480.95 price. Hope this helps anybody who pulled the trigger yesterday.

John
John

I just called and they are initiating a refund. At first the CSR said the promotion didn’t start until Dec. 18th. So funny. I had to tell her that its on their web site and I can buy one today at the discounted price.

Ann
Ann

Can these be used to pay Citibank?

Jason
Jason

Not even possible via plasitq, and you don’t want to do so anyway as that’s not the point of this Five Back gift card.

Here is what I will do if I can place an order (Unfortunately, creating a new account doesn’t help me, not sure if my billing address, credit card number, name or even IP address got flagged)

1. Use 2% cashback portal such as GivingAssistant or Yazing (both confirmed 2% on VGC to me for purchase in Sept and Oct) to go to GCM

2. Use 2% reward credit card such as Citi Double Cash to pay $480.95

3. Received the card with value $500, go to CVS to buy a PPMC and load $496.05, will charge $3.95 fee so total will be $500, proceed as credit

4. Load Bluebird or Serve using PPBDC to earn 1%, use your bluebird or serve account to pay bill and if not, you can still use the Serve debit card for daily purchase to earn 1% back.

5. Should receive $25 on the card after 48 hours

6. Spend $25 on the Five Back’s partnership company that earns 5%. received $1.25.

7. Spend $1.25 on the Five Back’s partnership company that earns 5%, received $0.06.

here is my math:
$9.62 from portal (3 months after for GivingAssistant or Yazing)
$9.62 from Credit Card (2 bill statements time frame as Citi Double cash earns 1% on purchase and 1% on payment which is one billing circle after)
$496.05 in paypal account, load into BB or serve to get an additional $4.96 by the 10th of next month
$25 after first use of all $500 card value as Five Back
$1.25 after second use of the $25
$0.06 after final use of the card $1.25

That is: $541.60 cash value, $60.65 profit, 60.65/480.95= 12.61% return

Ann

My Serve was shutdown in January and CVS in my area is cash only.

The only problem, how many people still have serve/bluebird open? and how many people still have ppbdc open? All mine were closed 🙁

Worked fine for me @ $480.95. Let’s see if it gets cancelled now and if not I will keep going…
