[YMMV] American Express Platinum 125,000 Points + 10x Grocery/Gas For 6 Months

Update 3/27/21: More people targeted.

(Update: I changed ‘highly YMMV’ in the title to ‘YMMV’ since many readers in the comments have been able to pull this up using the prequal links, below.)

You’ve probably all seen our post about the terrific American Express Platinum signup offer of 100,000 points + 10x on grocery and gas for 6 months (up to $15,000 in spend).

We won’t rehash it all here again, just to add one little nugget: there are sporadic reports of those who are getting an increased version of this offer with 125,000 + 10x. Both the 100,000 and 125,000 offers have the same $5,000 in 6 months spend requirement. Uscreditcardguide reports that some are seeing this in their prequalified offers, and I see now in the Frequentmiler comments someone who apparently saw it even without prequal (?).

You can check your Amex Prequalified offers here. Could also make sense to try checking CardMatch for pre-approved offers (see our original post here).

We’ve reported in the past about the highly targeted 125,000 prequalified offer, and apparently that offer now has the 10x grocery/gas bonus attached to it as well. Again, you’re unlikely to get the offer, but it’s good to know it exists and can’t hurt to check your prequalified offers to see.

Applied for 100k, 10/$200 referral. I am somehow in Popup hell. I got it a year ago on the Platinum app, and then again today. My last new Amex was the revamped Green in October 2019. I got the big 45k offer but kept the card, paid the fee and it’s still open. I closed a four-year-old Gold card last year because I wasn’t using it, but I had paid the fee the prior year and only got one retention offer. I use my BBP religiously and even put some small spend on the Green and my ancient BCE to butter them up. Good luck to those who got it. Only one card opened during Covid with BOA.

So I got approved for this offer last week. On my account page online the bonus tracker says $5,000 in spend within 3 months, which is incorrect as the offer says 6 months for the spend. Anyone else see this error?

I had this offer in Credit Card Match – went back a week later, it was still there. Finally bit the bullet to do it and its gone and I have no AMEX pre-qual offers (they all disappeared). Does anyone have experience with this? I have no AMEX relationship.

Does Amex code stand alone 7/11 as gas station ?

another update just to say more are targeted? what else is worth reporting, that the sky continues to be blue? let me know when this awesome offer is available in incognito, then I’ll care lmao

I appreciated the update. Prompted me to go look and found P2 was targeted when wasn’t before.

There’s no rule that says all posts apply to everyone. If it doesn’t interest you, move on.

Got the 125k +10% here…looks like it’s time to start the Amex churn!

I got the offer to show up for P2, however it doesn’t state it has a $200 home furnishing credit like the 100K +10x grocery referrals that are going around. Anyone know if that does not apply here?

That credit is only in referral links.

I’d love to get another Platinum (currently have another flavor), but this part scares me since I don’t plan on keeping the card open for the second year: “If we in our sole discretion determine that you have engaged in abuse, misuse, or gaming in connection with the welcome offer in any way or that you intend to do so (for example, if you applied for one or more cards to obtain a welcome offer (s) that we did not intend for you; if you cancel or downgrade your account within 12 months after acquiring it; or if you cancel or return purchases you made to meet the Threshold Amount), we may not credit Membership Rewards points to, we may freeze Membership Rewards points credited to, or we may take away Membership Rewards points from your account. We may also cancel this Card account and other Card accounts you may have with us.”

Anyone have thoughts/experiences on that? I’ve opened and closed the green/gold in the past.

You can wait for the annual fee to hit and then cancel. Amex will refund the fee as long as you do this within 30 days and it will leave you outside the 12 month mark. Amex can take away your ability to warn sign up bonuses on future cards, which they’ll tell you about if you try to apply for another card (sometimes referred to as “the pop-up”), but they won’t claw back the bonus as long as you don’t cancel within 12 months.

Only getting a 75k point bonus ….worth it?
