    • Use promo code GET300
    • Sign up for a qualifying direct deposit of at least $50. Must be made within 60 days of account opening

The Fine Print

  • Minimum direct deposit of $50 required to receive payment.
  • Sign up for direct deposit (direct deposit transactions are limited to payroll, social security, pension and government benefits) at the same time you open a PeoplesBank Free Checking Account or any consumer checking account and we will deposit $300 into the new checking account after the first direct deposit is made (please allow up to six weeks after your first direct deposit is received). The first direct deposit must be made within 60 days from the date the new checking account is opened.
  • Minimum opening deposit of $10 required.
  • Offer valid from 11/20/17 – 12/31/17.
  • PeoplesBank employees are not eligible for this promotion.
  • Personal accounts only, limit of one $300 payment per customer, cannot be combined with any other offers. 3rd party fees for message, data and internet services may apply.
  • Must enter code “Get300” to be eligible. Online account openings only.
  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

The free checking account as that has no monthly fees. According to comments on previous bonuses there is an  early account termination fee of $15 if the account is closed within 90 days.

Our Verdict

There are lots of different banks called PeoplesBank, making this super annoying. That’s why we also refer to it as bankatpeoples (the websites URL). Obviously a nice big bonus, shame we don’t know if it will be a soft or hard pull to open. If anybody knows, please share in the comments. I won’t add it to the best checking bonuses until we know more.

Big thanks to reader, Curmudgeon who let us know. Learn how to find bonuses and contribute to the site here.

$1,000 max on each Free Checking and Easy Savings per entering numbers in and being told the max. Not applying yet, but that’s some information at least.

Dan

It’s actually $500 max. If you enter $1001, it tells you that no amounts over $1000 are allowed. But if you choose $1000 and hit continue, it then tells you no amounts over $500 are allowed. So it is actually a max of $500 (even though it misleadingly says $1000).

Thanks for the clarification!

Online only

Don’t open checking and savings together if you want to maximize credit card funding. $500 cc funding allowed per application (whether just checking or checking and savings combined). Best strategy would be to open checking with 500 cc funding and then open savings later in a separate app with another 500 cc funding

Seems like residents from any New England state can apply online.

I applied. Seemed to go through but I didn’t get an account number. I’ve mostly given up funding with CC as long as I’m not working on spend, it seems the potential hassle far exceeds any reward. They required trial deposits for ACH funding so I’d recommend using a debit card for anyone in the same boat.

Successfully applied. Verification questions are the usual slightly tricky ones, and I had to upload my primary ID.

It seems I was able to successfully fully fund $500 with Discover It Miles (still getting 3% back) with CA set to zero. I Iive in MA. Not sure if it was a HP. I will check CreditKarma and update.

Received this screen message after fully submitting the application:

“Your application has been successfully submitted. Below is a summary of products that have been successfully opened or are pending review by our staff.”

Is the direct deposit requirement $150 or $50? It looks like $50 on the website but the post says $150 twice. Wondering if that is from an old bonus that was copy/pasted?

Update, was declined. Have opened up 10-12 checking accounts this year. Not sure if it is that (and they are sensitive to inquiries) or if it was some failure with the verification questions in the last step.

Did anyone run into this and successfully reapply or anything?

I have over 20 accounts this year, doubt it’s inquiries.

Denied as well. I am blaming the fraud alerts that I set up because of Equifucks. I did not retry. Do, bofa cc goes through as purchase.
How do I remove the fraud alerts?

Thanks guys. Called this morning and they confirmed it was due to failed identity verification questions at the end. They suggested applying again but advised it might be denied due to entering the same info again.

I hate those stupid questions. Especially when it asks what credit card you opened in a certain month. That can be a tough one for readers of this blog…

Tried to apply again just now by simply going to their home page and choosing to open “free checking” account. You enter promo code on first page towards the bottom. Unfortunately I was declined again due to identity verification, even though they were completely separate questions from my first attempt. The one that probably got me was “Your credit file indicates you have a credit card with which of the following institutions” and I had cards with 3 of the 5…Lol. I apparently did not choose wisely. Good luck to everyone else.

I agree, I have opened at least 15 accounts in the last 12 months and was approved instantly for this one. They don’t seem to be inquiry sensitive, probably your security questions

Can confirm account opening worked with NH address.

My husband and I got instant approvals with account numbers. My Experian is frozen and did not affect it. We funded both with his Hilton Amex card-$500 each. No credit inquiry alert so probably soft pull. The security questions were very specific so I will check my credit after it refreshes. I normally get same day alerts from various credit monitoring when I apply for credit card.

works for CT! No hard Pull
