The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • Santander is offering a bonus of $150 when you complete the following requirements:
    • Open a new eligible checking account with promo code DIGBONUSA5J
    • Have direct deposits totaling $1,000 or more within the first 90 days of account opening
    • Keep account open for at least 90 days and open at the time of bonus payment

The Fine Print

  • You must be 18 years or older. Offer is not available if any account owner is a current deposit customer of Santander or had a Santander deposit account in the last 12 months prior to account opening.
  • Offer cannot be combined with any other bonus offer.
  • Eligible new account must be opened between 10/01/2017 – 12/31/2017. 1/1/2018 – 3/31/2018 4/1/2018 – 6/30/2018
  • The account needs to be open for at least 90 days and remain open in an eligible account type until payment of bonus, which will occur within 30 days thereafter. In addition, the account must remain open and in good standing to be bonus eligible.
  • Bonus is considered interest and will be reported to IRS on Form 1099-INT.
  • If multiple accounts are opened with the same signer, only one account will be eligible for the bonus.
  • For the purpose of bonus, Santander considers direct deposits to be automated electronic deposits made to your account by someone else, such as an employer issuing payroll or a government paying benefits. It does not include deposits to your account that are made by an individual using online banking.
  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

$25 Early Account Termination Fee

Account needs to be open when bonus posts and in addition you need to keep it open for 90 days otherwise you will be charged an early account termination fee of $25.

Basic Checking

There is a non-waiveable $3 monthly service fee.

Simply Right Checking

There is a $10 monthly fee that is waived when you make any financial transaction that posts during a calendar month*. Includes deposits, withdrawals, transfers or payments. Excludes fees, rebates or adjustments posted by Santander.

*based on the footnote “per service fee period”, you should interpret this to refer to a transaction posting during each statement cycle (as you would expect) — if your statement cycle does not match up with the calendar month.

Premier Plus

Not that I think anyone here is considering this account, but there is a $35 monthly fee that is waived by maintaining $75,000 in combined balances in deposits and investments held with Santander Investment Services, OR 6,000 in total monthly direct deposits.

Our Verdict

A $225 bonus with direct deposits of only $500 just recently ended, so this new bonus has higher bonus requirements for a lower bonus. That being said if you didn’t do that deal this one might still be worth doing as you’re eligible again if you haven’t held an account in the last 12 months (making it churnable) so you really want to start that clock as soon as possible and there is no guarantee that a $225 bonus will come back. These used to be available nationwide, but sadly state restricted now. I will be adding this to our list of the best checking bonuses.

They confirmed I am eligible for this if I have a biz account.

First I tried to apply online. In the final step of the application it was declined citing identity verification. I have been in the US for just four years and I assume this is the issue.

That same day (to combine a Chex inquiry) I went in to complete an application in branch. Went smoothly. But Santander branches have really poor service. Sometimes they have 1 teller when there are lots of people trying to deposit cash. Today they had 4 people behind the teller desks all doing nothing while there was just one person handling account issues.

Saw targeted offer $300 in mailer expired on 7/15 already however

Tried signing up but was unable to verify identity. Was asking me questions that didn’t even come from my credit report. Answered all as none of the above and still didn’t work.

Yet Another Redditor

This has been tagged as a Credit Card Offer. Should be Bank Account Bonuses .

Just recently opened and haven’t received the bonus yet but wanted add DP that funding on IHG coded as purchase.

Can you close this account after the bonus posts? So, 3 months, plus 30 days.

Offer says “Eligible new account must be opened between 10/01/2017 – 12/31/2017”

This write-up still says “Eligible new account must be opened between 07/17/2017—09/30/2017”

fix ur shit dude

Matt, how about you fix ur attitude? Will, thanks for all you do for us.

Does anyone know if Santander adheres to their policy of no bonus if you’ve had an account open in the past 12 months?
I closed mine early April 2017. I think I should just be patient and wait but I recall Wells Fargo didn’t stick to their rules about that at all.

If anyone has trouble getting the verification to work, call the 800 number and attempt to do it over the phone. If the phone attendant fails to verify you, they’ll mark your account as unable to open and refund your funding money…

After this, attempt the application online again and you should be good to go.

I had this problem and a second attempt at opening the account resolved it.

Hey DOC, letting you know Discover didnt work for me. Been 4 months already no bonus.

9/8 opened simply right checking in branch

9/26 $1000 university tuition billing account refund posted as UNIV EREFUND

9/29 $965 ACH from Cap1 Checking posted as P2P

9/29 $35 ACH from Cap1 Checking posted as P2P

11/09 $1000 ACH from PNC posted as P2P

11/14 $1000 ACH from Cap1 360 Savings posted as CAPITAL ONE N.A. CAPITALONE

11/14 $1000 ACH Wells Fargo Checking posted as IFI DDA TO DDA

11/30 $1000 ACH from SunTrust Checking posted as P2P

I guess the university refund worked as DD? I kinda freaked when bonus didn’t post after all that time lol All that work for only $150… when can I safely close the account? Wait another 30 days? 60 days?

9/05 Opened
9/21 Schwab Brokerage DD $1000+
12/05 Bonus

Had employer DD as well, but it was less than requirements. Schwab should have been the one that triggered it.

Transfer from fidelity brokerage to Santander on 10/17/17, bonus post on 1/3/18

Not jumping on this. Holding out for the $225 bonus, after making that mistake last year.

Your ‘Direct link to offer’ is out-of-date, expired 12/31/17 and uses promo code DIG15010ND
I found a link for code DIGBONUSJ2M expiring 3/31/18 is

also, Your post’s The Fine Print might want to update what Santander’s DIGBONUSJ2M offer considers a Direct Deposit: offer says “Santander considers direct deposits …. does not include deposits to your account that are made by an individual using online banking.” which, if enforced, would disqualify online initiated ACH transfers that have the WEB entry class code such as Ally’s.

The previous offer’s foot note 2 Direct Deposit terms seemed more liberal, allowing “… generally, payments made by corporations or other organizations”

If anyone outside of those targetted states applies and gets approved, let us know!
