Avoiding Fees

Monthly Fees

This account has no monthly fees to worry about.

Early Account Termination Fee

I wasn’t able to find a fee schedule, so I’m unsure if there is any early account termination fee.

Our Verdict

Looks like it’s worth doing considering it’s a soft pull to open and there are no monthly fees to worry about.

Can confirm it’s a Chex pull (did not receive any HP on 3 bureaus). I opened with its predecessor NEFCU (rebranding). Also their membership is still limited to Nassau/Suffolk county on Long Island NY. William Charles

I tried to apply but seems its not all of NY. When you try to open it has an option to select one eligibility:
I live in Nassau or Suffolk County.
I work in Nassau or Suffolk County.
I can be sponsored by an existing NEFCU member who is an immediate family member or a household member.
I attend school in Nassau or Suffolk County.

If you can debit $250/month and maintain DD you can earn 3% apy on 25k.

DD or one bill pay per month in any amount counts as well so DD is not required. The $250 debit can be a single $250 transaction or cumulative. Easier than the 10-15+ debits with no set dollar amount.

Additional DP: Venmo and MO purchase works for debit.

That APY is now 2.5%. Still higher than most accounts out there

This CU has a wonky system. My real employer DD said “xxxx xx payment” (and clears other banks perfectly with zero issues) I had to call in and argue with them that it was a real employer DD. They denied me the bonus “based on the code”. Will be filing CFPB.

Also DP that Schwab does not work as DD. I pushed Schwab earlier, but it was rejected as nothing appeared 30 days after my DD date.

Just to update, a couple hours after I ended the call (before I actually filed the complaint) I received a call from a manager and the bonus was credited.

Are you able to SM them to close the account or do you have to go in to a branch to close?

“The minimum opening balance of $100 must remain in the new checking account for six months”. It looks like if you close the account before 6 months or simply don’t have a balance of $100 or more in your checking account (for at least 6 months) you forfeit the bonus.
