Our Verdict

A friend of mine got these offers, I think they are showing for those in the NYC area. Not sure how many people still use yellow cabs in the Uber/Lyft era, but I’m sure some still do, and the MTA offer is useful for subway riders.

Has anyone actually gotten this to work? I’ve been using tap to pay but just checked my account and I haven’t gotten the 4x for any of my rides.

The MTA offer is not nearly as good as it appears at first look. It’s only for contact-less payments which are an experimental technology in New York available at a tiny number of stations. And it’s only usable when paying for one ride at a time. If it allowed you to charge up your Metrocard it would be easy to max out. As it is, only people who regularly board the train at those stations will be able to use it.

In NYC area, got both offers on my Amex Gold. Tried Apple Pay with my Amex Gold at Grand Central station several times.
Thanks DoC!

MTA offer is quite limited – it requires use of tap-to-pay, which is extremely limited in NYC – very few stations have it.

They’re basically the same. The only other custom terms that are not included in the above post is that eTix is excluded. Hopefully they’ll move the rollout along, https://omny.info/ says late 2020 for full system. I am on the 4/5/6, so I am happy enough.
