When is DoC’s Birthday??
I had a huge errand deposit made and reversed 3 days later in a savings account years ago. Added a a couple bucks in interest at the end of the month. No idea what was going through this couple’s minds to spend it.
I had $400+ show up in my account. It disappeared a few days later. A year later, another $800 showed but and stayed there. I finally called the bank after 3 weeks and they IMMEDIATELY took it out.
Only a fool would spend such an unexpected financial windfall. With sums of money that large someone, somewhere, is looking to get that back.
At best, I would call back the bank. If I really wanted to make money on this, I would take the funds and park them in a high interest savings account. Then when the bank comes back asking for the money, transfer it back and keep the interest. Sitting on that amount of cash would earn you $6.37 in interest per DAY!
It’s not like the bank is asking you to please send them a check, they just reverse effective the erroneous transaction was made — the overdraft fees by far outweigh the interest you’d earn by taking the money out.
Lol, spread that out across some interest bearing accounts and then when the bank calls tell them their request will be processed in 4-6 weeks after receiving proof of ownership documentation which can only be mailed to you
Many thanks, Will! It’s very flattering to be a favorite of Doc! … even if we have to share being co-favorites with Stephen 🙂

Go to jail
Do not pass go.
I had an incorrect deposit into one of my retirement accounts (the brokerage firm allows you to make direct deposit like a bank account, and allowed this large deposit to go in even though it was way above the max contribution for a given year). I notified them immediately and even tried to call the firm who made the deposit (a major league sports team, no less). The issue was eventually corrected but it made for some good laughs (like knowing a millionaire athlete was missing his paycheck somewhere).
Yep, mistakes happen.
I had a small withdrawal (>$100) happen to me at Old National at a teller window in Indiana. I am in Virginia. Called the main bank number, they transferred me to the branch, and I could overhear the conversation when they thought they had me on hold… At first the CSR was saying “He was in branch this morning when I cashed the check”. Silence falls, and I assume they are locating at the paper check. Turned out it was a different customer, and the CSR looked up the wrong account when she cashed the other persons check. It wasn’t a case of fraud, so I was satisfied with the response, yet annoyed I had to show them their mistake.
