Saw a post on flyertalk that Amex is not processing some of the credits citing that Amextravel.com (which Amex IAP points you to) is not a valid booking for this offer. Super shady if true.

i attempted the double-dip on this about a month ago. cancelled the trip for Delta eCredit a week ago.
Amex caught wind that i canceled it and sent an email confirmation about the cancellation. i haven’t received the $300 off $1000 statement credit.
the fine print is tricky. it says “Travel must originate in and return to U.S. gateway and select Canadian gateways”
and it says ” Statement credit will appear on your billing statement within 90 days after 7/20/2022, provided that American Express receives information from the merchant about your qualifying purchase. Statement credit may be reversed if qualifying purchase is cancelled.”

dunno if i’ll get this one. if you still haven’t done it, book a flight far into the future and cancel in October or so for eCredit.

Thanks for sharing your experience here. I have some questions:
1. What did you mean by double-dip in this context?
2. Even though you activated and qualified for this offer about a month ago by making an eligible purchase, you didn’t receive the $300 off $1000 statement credit yet?
3. What kind of email confirmation about the cancellation did you receive from Amex? Did the email contents state that a flight booked through the Amex travel portal has now been cancelled?

AmEx adds a 30-50% markup on airfares purchased through their portal. If you pull up an itinerary on AmEx and then pull up the identical itinerary on Google Flights or the airline’s portal, the AmEx listing will be more expensive.

This is not true. Sometimes it’s slightly more expensive (a couple dollars), sometimes it’s cheaper (premium international fares), but it’s never a 30%-50% markup. If that’s what you’re seeing then there’s something different about the tickets you’re looking at. You need to look at the fare basis codes to see if you’re actually buying the same fare. Simply put, this is not how airfares are priced.

this is YMMV. I just checked a Japan Airlines flight in premium economy and the price on the Amex site is about $500 cheaper. Though, the same flight in Economy is more expensive on the Amex site.($100 more) But this particular offer requires Premium Economy or higher class tickets anyway. So the bottom line is the deal is only useful to people who would purchase premium tickets.

DP: I booked a Finnair IAP (premium economy) through the Amex Travel URL linked in the offer and was told that the charge would be ineligible for the offer because the merchant ID is Finnair, not Amex Travel (doesn’t match my experience with the Delta 400/100). Representative submitted an “I-care” form to look into it, so will update if Amex honors their end….so maybe hold off on booking Finnair PE on Amex Travel for now

It appears that it does not apply to economy class international fares. The link from the offer americanexpress.com/us/AmexTravelIAP refers to below steps. It appears it has to be premium economy at minimum to get $300 off.

Step 1
To find International Airline Program fares, you must be logged in to AmexTravel.com with your American Express Platinum Card account.
Step 2
Use the booking tool to search for First Class, Business Class, or Premium Economy to an international destination.
Step 3
Select qualifying flights highlighted by the International Airline Program banner.

Am I missing something? Did it work for economy fares for anyone? Thank you!

IAP is only for premium economy and above and the offer is only for IAP…

Good catch. Thanks a lot. I almost fell for it thinking I could book a $1400 flight in economy and only pay 1100. It does not make sense to me to pay an additional $1000 just to get 300 off even though the service level is obviously higher. It only makes sense if you already decided to book premium class tickets regardless.

Are you sure they can’t? Booked a flight on AF through Amex travel a couple weeks (PWP), but before the points were applied the merchant showed as AF.

Is it possible to use points and still get credit – so in essence double dipping 35% back as well as the $300 back?

yes, bc it will charge as a flight first, then trigger the 1k threshold. Following days it will post an equal amount of points covering the charge, with the statement balance credit.
