The Offer

No direct link, targeted offer

  • Some American Express cardholders are being offered either a $15 statement credit or 1,500 Membership Rewards points when they use a card enrolled in this offer to spend $50 or more in a single purchase with Hello Fresh at hellofresh.com. You can do this offer twice per card.

The Fine Print

  • Valid until April 2nd, 2018

Our Verdict

For those not familiar with Hello Fresh is a food delivery company that sends you all the ingredients you need plus a recipe for a meal. This deal becomes a lot more attractive when you stack deals. For example BeFrugal is offering $20 off your first two boxes plus $20 cash back.

  • Two person, 4 recipe box comes out to $59.92 for the first two weeks. Week one you’ll pay $24.92 ($59.92 minus $15 from American Express offer and a further $20 from eBates) week two you’ll pay $44.92 ($59.92 minus $15 from the American Express offer)
  • Using a referral code gets you $40 off, I can’t seem to find any good deals that would help hit $50 in spend
  • Unfortunately a 4 person 2 recipe box comes out to exactly $49.92, just 8¢ needed to trigger this offer. If you’re a two per

Feel free to share any better stacking opportunities in the commentsApparently Sam’s Club has gift cards for Hello Fresh on deep discount as well, so that might actually work out better than this offer.

Just for the record my $20 cash back for going through Befrugal was denied. I have a well over 90% success rate of automatic posting (never run adblock!) so this is either Befrugal or Hellofresh deciding to keep the $20 for themselves.

Does anyone know ways to stack these amex offers for existing HelloFresh users?

If you are an existing subscriber like me and are annoyed because you have more offers available than there are weeks between now and April 2, you could also purchase a gift box for yourself. I purchased a gift box for myself last night and it triggered the offer, and then you can redeem it later on. Not sure how easy it is to redeem though, I’ll have to test that before I buy more than 1 gift box for myself. It comes in the form of a promo code though.. might have to pause existing subscription then activate a new one using the promo code… not sure yet. But it did trigger the offer at least, so that’s good.

Did you have a chance to try redeeming the gift box? Super curious.

Any update on this? I am in the same dillema and want to pull the trigger on gift cards for each card, but i want to make sure i can use the promo code for the gift box with my existing subscription.

Did it work for you?

The funny thing is that Amex offer is kinda useless,
but if you go via BeGrugal, it is $60 – $30 coupon – $20 cashback =$10,

and if you are new to that cashback site there is also $10 cashback for new members so it is free

“kinda useless” ? Not really. If you are an ongoing subscriber, this is a goldmine! And it’s actually a pretty decent service. Might not be the absolute best one, but it’s not bad! Definitely cheaper than eating out, and with these AMEX offer discounts it’s now probably on par with (or maybe even cheaper) than buying the individual ingredients from the grocery store, plus you get the convenience of everything being delivered right to your doorstep. Hardly “useless”.

It really depends on whether you are very interested in being a long term customer or more inclined to try and possibly cancel after the first box. Doing the $60-$30-$20 deal for the first order will be $1.67 per serving which is awesome. If you do a second order, then you will pay $60-$15 Amex for that so the price per serving for two orders will be $4.58 per serving.

If, instead, you do the $40 coupon for the first two orders, you should use the Amex offer which means doing 4 meals per box. The price per serving will be $4.37 for two orders. If you cancel that after one box, you will have paid $3.13 per serving. The third and subsequent box will be the same with either scenario and hopefully you have several Amex cards you can use for those.

So, if you think you will order at least two boxes and have the time to make four meals from each box, do the second scenario. Otherwise, do the first scenario.

DoC, struggling to understand the calculation to arrive at this “Two person, 4 recipe box comes out to $59.92 for the first two weeks”.

Did you mean you type $69.84? (24.92+44.92)

Thanks.

The $59.92 the price per box for the first two boxes after using the $40 coupon ($20 for each of the first two boxes) but before the other discounts.

For people that actually use Hello Fresh on a regular basis (like me), this offer is glorious. It doesn’t seem to be very strictly targeted, if at all (maybe just geographically?). I had it on all 11 of my cards, including AU cards, and even including the BBP (shocking, I know!) Most of the MR cards seem to have a 1500 point offer, while most other cards have a $15 offer. I wish there were more weeks between now and April 2 so that I could take advantage of every single offer! Does anyone know if it’s possible to purchase a “gift” box or something like that, which could be redeemed in the future? This might be useful for people with extra offers if they want to take full advantage.

If anyone has any specific questions about Hello Fresh, feel free to ask me, I’ve been using it for many months and love it.

if i just want to use these hello fresh offers for the bare minimum, no ongoing subscription, how easy is that?

Tom

I haven’t done all the math calculations for that, as I am on ongoing subscriber, but I can assure you that if you wish to cancel after the first week it is super easy, you can do it all online without needing to call or chat with anyone at all. You can also reactivate at any time if you change your mind, and sometimes they’ll even email you discounted offers after you cancel to try to win you back.

Compare to Blue Apron, which one is better?

Tom

  az

Blue Apron might have slightly higher quality ingredients, but in my experience the recipes are more tedious to make and the portion sizes are smaller than Hello Fresh, on average. I prefer Hello Fresh due to the slightly larger portion sizes, relative ease of the recipes, and the MUCH wider range of recipe selection each week.

VERY TRUE! I’m not a huge Blue Apron fan, but it’s still way better than Sun Basket… I don’t know why some people are obsessed with it, I hate it…

Yes you can purchase a gift in advance then redeem it in the future. I’ve done the exact same thing for Sunbasket.
