Don’t waste your time on these Amex / Mint offers now. When you buy a phone and service on Mint Mobiles site (PC browser, not sure about mobile app) per Amex’s terms, the billing shows up as Q1 instead of Mint (Mint uses Q1 to supply their cell phone sales). Because the bill doesn’t go through as “Mint”, Amex won’t offer the reward. They screwed my elderly father over with this bait and switch. He spent $450 and didn’t get the $90. Would have been much less to buy the phone on Amazon and use a good 3% credit card.

I have Mint, and I get 3 offers from the last Amex offer so I’m stuck with them. They are horrible. They throttle my data speed in crowed places. It is almost impossible to browse anything when you needed. Speed is great otherwise, but I would not recommend.

So far I have not had any throttling issues in busy areas. Make sure you have good T-Mobile coverage and bandwidth, because Mint runs on the T-Mobile network. Technically, Mint servicve is throttled before regular T-Mobile customers. It all depends where you use Mint service. Overall, I would recommend Mint and give them 4.5 out 5 stars.

This is what happens when you use a shit-tier MVNO, even when they’re fronted by a dishonest actor like Ryan Reynolds. I’ve never understand why people willingly (after they realize they’ve been scammed and eventually have the ability to get out) stay with these crooked outfits when you can just go get a good deal with a 1st rate carrier instead

Why so much hate? What would you suggest? First rate carrier at $720 per year? Mint offers the same for 1/2 price.

Second year Mint customer. I’d recommend at least trying the service after taking a look at the coverage maps where you spend the majority of your time. I’ve had great coverage and no issues at home or on the road.

Performance-wise, Mint has certainly been on par with TMO’s own-brand prepaid option in my experience.

Also note that mint charges taxes and fees if you pay them directly.

It’s better to buy the prepaid cards at stores if you’re a new customer. For existing customers, I don’t think it’s possible to avoid the renewal fees and taxes

No, but it’s cheaper to buy $20 reloads with the $1 fee than it is to just reload at $180/$240/$360 levels.

Do you mean online reloads or the prepaid physical cards? (Thanks.)

This is >20% back on a large purchase plus the points.

Last year’s deal was baller, we used it on P1 & P2. As of this writing we aren’t targeted on either player. If we were, I certainly would be looking into doing 2 things:

1) I’d renew (we’re due at end of month anyways) for 1x4GB and 1x10GB. That total bill would be $420 before tax, so it’d qualify if they happen to not look for device purchases (like the terms say, but I don’t really buy it).

2) If that cleared on 1 player and we were targeted on both, then I would look to see how prices are for the new iPhone as well as how competitive any phones are; for a new phone of ~$900 that’s still 10% off which isn’t bad for *new* iPhones. With the platinum card you can still get the default purchase protection (*not the phone insurance though*, since it’s not a monthly bill).

Alas, personally being untargeted, I believe Black Friday might give a better value for last year’s devices, so I’ll hold out for that. But I’d have preferred to be targeted than not.

All and all, I would’ve liked to be your DP because we’re shopping around for new plans. This isn’t as good as last year, but Mint already crushes it when it comes to pricing so we shouldn’t expect too much. Also, fwiw, to some it’s better to get 10% off a large purchase that you’d already make rather than 50% off of one that you don’t value. So, there’s that, saving $90 is better than saving $45, if your purchases would’ve been made even without any bonus and I’m nearly in that boat.

I’m just curious about how they come up with this specific number “415”?

2x their min 12 month contract size is less than $415. This can help to “upsell and offset” the discount. I presume. Also, with this being approx 20% of the required spend (tbh, I don’t know if they have to pay all the $95 or more or less even), they can safely assume they won’t be taking a loss on any devices that are purchased.

The few phones I checked (e.g. Pixel 5) were priced $50 above the going retail price in most outlets. So “$50 with a plan” gets you back to effective MSRP, so you can get $90 off retail here.

If you know what phone you want and you are confident it’s not going on sale AND you need to re-up your Mint plan, then this makes sense. Absent all those conditions, I suspect you can do better elsewhere between now and Black Friday.
