Avoiding Fees
Monthly Fees
$7 monthly fee is waived if you do any of the following:
- Perform 20+ card transactions (Debit and/or credit)
- Members who are age 24 and younger,
- age 60 and older, or
- maintain an average daily balance of $10,000 in MyStyle Checking will also have the fee waived automatically.
Early Account Termination Fee
Account previously needed to be kept open for six months, but doesn’t seem like that is the case any longer.
Our Verdict
Seems like you can open out of state with a donation to American Consumer Council. Previous bonus was $150. Not the biggest bonus but might be worth doing for those that have already done the larger bonuses.

phone rep claims promotion is only for residents of footprint states (even though i don’t see that anywhere on the promo page), still requires chex pull
(did not pull chex to join the credit union with just savings/certificate accounts, but you would then need to call in to open a checking and they won’t extend the bonus promo out of footprint, and want chex thawed before proceeding with a checking application)
I don’t get it so you got approved with Chex frozen, you then called to have checking open but want you to thaw Chex before that happens?
Is this still a hard pull?
No hard pull on 5/5/25. But I was denied, probably because I’m already a Sunward member.
I had hoped to double dip before the merger completed.
Suggest opening Sunward first because that bonus is better and easier.
Thanks I just opened Sunward on 05/06. This would be my second time as I received the bonus when it was Sandia. I might try for Mountain before 06/30 and before they completely merge or is that definitely a no go?
My position was about the same as yours:
Already a Sunward member.
In the footprint for MACU (at least the former one; maybe it’s more restrictive due to the merger). But they accepted my zip and DL.
I applied with all 3 CRAs thawed, but Chex frozen. There was no soft pull on anything, including Chex.
Normally, when Chex is frozen and someone attempts to pull it, that shows up as a soft. So I don’t think they tried to pull Chex. They never mentioned it either; all they said was “We are unable to open an account for you at this time.”
They also used a Blend app (same as Sunward does now).
My best guess is they denied because I’m already a Sunward member.
You would be DP #2. Can’t hurt to try, at least not if you keep Chex frozen.
According to the webpage of Sunward aka Sandia Laboratory Federal Credit Union…at the top it states Moutain America will be transitioning to Sunward.
MACU currently has a 5% APR promotion on 18 mo certificate, which comes in both standard and “growth” versions. The latter takes $5 to open, and additional deposits can be made later up to $100,000 at any time before maturation and earn the same APR.
Beware of Mountain America!!!

down to 4.15% for 18 mo cd as of today (really annoying, i opened a membership yesterday and tried to open a cd but the system wouldn’t let me, and today they’ve dropped the rates)
Only $100 for all that?
Meh…
Unfortunately, we are unable to open an account for you. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to 1‑800‑748‑4302
Locations need to also include ID, NV, NM, MT. I was denied in branch a couple of years ago. Maybe I’ll give it another shot soon
I did the bonus back in 2020 from OOS. Unfortunately, this was shortly before I started keeping track of my Chex stats so I don’t know what my Chex stats were before applying.
However, I found the 2 comments below of others being declined for Chex so MACU may be (or least was) somewhat Chex-sensitive.

You left “$150” in the title from the old post.
Fixed, thanks
Is there a Chex pull?
Last week I joined the cu just for a cd and they did an Experian soft pull and pulled chex. So I’m sure they will do both for a checking account.
Were you able to fund CD with CC? If so can you do Amex (I know there is 2.5%)?
No, I was only funding an add-on cd so I put the $1 for a main share and $10 to start the cd on a debit card. Reading above, it sounds like they charge a 2.5% fee for a credit card.
By the way, their current cd special is excellent – 5% for an 18 month term.
what were your chex stats for the cd (were you approved oos)? thinking of applying for membership/cd first, then maybe adding on checking in a few months if they’ll let me
My stats were quite high. Probably like 3/1,8/3,13/12, 23/24. I was approved for a CD. I tried the $100 checking promo a few days later and was denied for chex. The 18 mo cd is now down to 4.15 %.
Yes, OOS.
