Avoiding Fees

The easiest way to avoid paying any fees is by opening the WB Free Checking account which does not have any monthly fees. I couldn’t find the fee schedule so I am unsure if any early account termination fee is charged or not.

Our Verdict

Unfortunately we don’t know much about this bank, if anybody decides to sign up then please share your datapoints in the comments below. For now we haven’t added it to the best checking sign up bonus page.

Big thanks to reader, GRR who let us know. Learn how to find bonuses and contribute to the site here.

I guess updating their online account opening system wasn’t in the budget this year! They should be more focused on removing all the chex inquiries they initiated on people’s chex reports due to their false advertisement a few weeks ago!

There is more than one bank with “Westfield” as its primary name, but definitely really similar. Kind of like “First National Bank….” comes up with ~100+ different legal entities.

To help tease out really similar names try

https://research.fdic.gov/bankfind/

Westfield Bank, FSB (FDIC # 57077) from Ohio and the account opening mess

Westfield Bank (FDIC # 90300) from Massachusetts which is offering the $200 promo in Wares, MA

Wow…I just saw Westfield and popped a nerve. my bad!

Offer is no longer available in Ware, MA; only at the two CT branches. I called the Ware branch as I live fairly close-by.

Went to a Connecticut branch today and a new account was opened – despite my having a lengthy Chex report (which included the Westfield, OH bank), Funded with cash, so don’t know about credit/debit funding (seems unlikely for in-branch). I mentioned the promotion in-branch but forgot to include the promo code, so followed up via email.

Looks like there’s an online version of this offer available now with code ONLINE200. Not sure if it’d be considered a continuation of this deal or a separate one.

I live locally and was able to sign-up online. It is a little cumbersome. You need to leave all the disclosure statements windows open in order to be able to check the “I Agree” box.

I needed to upload my DL and while I received an email saying my account needed to be reviewed, if you look carefully on the e-sign application, it shows your account number, which you can then use to enroll in online banking. I was able to enroll.

Here is a link to the fee schedule; no mention of early termination or dormancy fees, but probably safer to email CS.

I started to review the application and noticed that there is a Hampden/Hampshire County resident/school restriction.

“You will need to reside or work within Hampden or Hampshire Counties of Massachusetts or the Granby area, Northern Hartford, or Northern Tolland Counties of Connecticut
OR
Be enrolled in a school of higher education within Hampshire or Hampden Counties of Massachusetts.”

CHEX SENSITIVE. I probably only have 5-6 inquiries in last 6 months on my report and was denied last month with Chex cited as the reason. Good luck all

I opened yesterday and it looked like all was well, had an account number but then I got an email today with a “Notice of Adverse action” with a file attached citing my Chex report and “Excess Bank Inquiries” I guess my checking bonus party is winding down.

no funding page (can not choose how to fund the account)after finish application. Is anyone same to me?

Arty

Fee schedule does not say early termination fee.

Funding page says “visa, MC, Discover, or Amex”. But there is no CC funding optionon the next page

Any luck on getting the CC funding to work?

Called the bank. Says they don’t take CC funding. Not sure if they just recently disabled it, or it worked before.

This bank is not leading the industry in technology. Didn’t have an option to CC fund even though it specifically mentions it in the app. Password requirements allow you to have a number or a special character but not both. Then they email the password to you in PLAIN TEXT.

Declined due to “Excessive Bank Inquiries”. Definitely a bit chex sensitive.

Can confirm chex sensitive

Denied due to “excessive inquiries” for 3 accounts opened in 2017

People that were denied, be careful to check if they charged your funding source anyway. They went ahead and charged my credit card $500 for the opening deposit even though they denied my account on 2/7. Beware. I am just getting my refund now.

hi M Brown. How did you fund with 500 credit card? why I can not see the credit funding option. Funding page says “visa, MC, Discover, or Amex”. But there is no CC funding option on the next page

I applied for the account yesterday, and after I indicated an opening deposit amount of $500, the following screen provided funding options including CC.
