    • $150 when you receive at least two direct deposits totaling $2,500

The Fine Print

  • Customers with a current checking account, or who transfer funds from an existing WesBanco deposit account, are not eligible for the bonuses. An initial deposit of $1 is required to open an A+ Student Checking account and receive a bonus; all other consumer checking accounts require a $50 initial deposit to open and receive a bonus.

  • Customers that have received a new account opening or debit card usage bonus on any previous WesBanco checking account are not eligible for the debit card portion of this offer.
  • Customers that have received a direct deposit bonus on any previous WesBanco checking account are not eligible for the direct deposit portion of this offer.
  • No bonus will be paid if the account is in overdraft at the time the bonus is to be credited.
  • Businesses and employees are not eligible for bonuses.
  • Program subject to change without notice.
  • Offer effective from June 10, 2019 through September 1, 2019.
  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

Monthly Fees

Their basic checking account has a $4 monthly service charge, this is waived if you receive eStatements or maintain a monthly balance of $500.

Early Account Termination Fee

I couldn’t find their fee schedule, so I’m unsure if they charge an early account termination fee or not.

Our Verdict

Previously best bonus was $200. This is a slightly bigger bonus with slightly bigger direct deposit requirements. Doubt we see a bigger bonus from them in the near future, so if interested I’d sign up now. Because of that I will be adding this to our list of the best checking account bonuses.

FAQ for Checking/Savings/CDs (“How do I close an account?”) says there’s a fee for closing new accounts within 90 days, but doesn’t say how much.

In the folder I got yesterday, there is no mention of a early closing fee on their long list of fees… Who knows, there still may be one, better to just keep it open past 90 days if you can.

it’s certainly convenient to tie up lose ends as fast as possible, but I always try to leave accounts open a good amount of time anyways.

Banks are more likely to leave bonuses available to future customers if they think they are working to attract long-term customers. And in this case it looks like the account can be made free of monthly fees anyways.

I opened an account in branch yesterday, quick and painless. They did mention there was a $50 referral bonus as well, if referred by a current account holder, not sure if the referee gets the $50 as well on top of the $250, but it may be worth trying.

I have my 2 deposits scheduled by Transferwise (currency exchange platform), if that doesn’t trigger the bonus will be doing some ACH pushes from various banks.

Can you share experience using transferwise, if they are a good fit for travelling or paying friends in another country for language lesson. Thanks!

It is by far my favorite platform to make international transactions. Fees are low, platform is very user friendly, and the transfers are quick (at least for the countries I send money to/from, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium.) This was my transaction yesterday for example:

Amount sent 2,250 EUR
Converts to 2,543.66 USD
Fee 12.93 EUR
Exchange rate 1.13710

I used their fast transfer option, which is slightly more expensive, but delivers the money within 2 business days. They always use the real time exchange fee, which is unheard of in the traditional banks. Anyway if you want to give it a try, feel free to use my referral link, which gives your first $600 sent fee free: [removed]

William Charles feel free to remove my referral link if not allowed.

The $50 is just for the person who referred you. When opening the account you give the banker the name of the person that referred you. If I recall correctly the $50 posted within a week. Now you could open the account for the $250 and then refer someone else for an extra $50. I believe the cap is 5 referrals a year.

So many restrictions for $250, unless you can use a easy fake DD

Personally I thought this looks like a pretty easy one. Perhaps I have it easier than some, since I use a local credit union to transfer funds and it has counted for bonuses every time.

Did you try this bank before? So few dp for DD, and I think you can not tell whether it’s count for a DD or not if you do ACH until you get the bonus.

Pretty decent bonus at a bank with local branches. I believe they are fairly new to central KY. At least I’ve never noticed them until recently. I like banks that have free accounts, as it gives a little more flexibility as I earn bonuses. (And it looks like this account is free as long as you have e-statements.)

I hit my limit for bank bonuses pretty quickly this year due to selling some stocks. (The EIC has a ‘Cliff’ if you earn too much interest, etc.) I’ll definitely be having one of my parents do this bonus however.

Tried to open an account today at Louisville KY but got rejected. Reason: about 8 inquiries from banks since 2016. Quite sensitive huh?
