The Offer

Direct link to offer (shows on the homepage)

  • You can now receive a sign up bonus of 30,000 points after $1,000 in spend within 90 days of account opening on the Bank of America Amtrak Credit card.

Card Details

  • Annual fee of $79 is not waived
  • Complimentary Companion Coupon, One-Class Upgrade and a single-day ClubAcela® pass for access to ClubAcela, Amtrak Metropolitan LoungeSM or First class
  • Card earns at the following rates:
    • 3 points per $1 spent with Amtrak
    • 2 points per $1 spent on all other qualifying travel purchases
    • 1 point per $1 spent on all other purchases
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • 5% Amtrak Guest Rewards point rebate when you book your Amtrak redemption

Our Verdict

Standard bonus is 20,000 points but we’ve seen 30,000 points and 20,000 + $100 before as well. In terms of the value of Amtrak points they are as follows:

  • Non-Acela tickets points are worth 2.9¢ each
  • Acela tickets points are worth 2.56¢ cent

For more information on best uses and valuation read this post. This can be a valuable bonus for those that take advantage of/enjoy train travel. If you have any questions about Bank of America credit cards I’d recommend reading this post first. I will be adding this to our list of the best credit card bonuses. This offer certainly isn’t for everybody, but it is great for some people (nearly $900 in non-acela tickets).

I saw the DP on it being churnable after closing, anyone know if multiple can be opened at the same time like Alaska?

Has Bank of America gotten much stricter about approving cards? Both my wife and I have gotten Alaska cards in the past with no problem (and I still have one open). But my wife was declined for the Amtrak card; the letter I just received says it’s due to too many recent accounts, and no deposit/investment relationship. I then tried applying for myself, and was also declined. I’ll see what the forthcoming letter says, but I’m guessing it will be the same. FWIW, she’s only at 3/24 (plus 3 business cards), and I’m at 6/24 (plus 3 business cards). And although the letter didn’t mention credit scores, we’re both around 780 FICO. So I’m pretty surprised that she was declined.

Is this an anomaly, or is this now typical for Bank of America? Is it going to be similarly hard to get new Alaska cards?

Hmm, I can’t get the offer to show. It can only see the regular 20k offer

Currently it’s 20k on the homepage, but I just got the 30k offer on the payment page while making a booking, so you could probably get it if you made a dummy booking.

Any cool itineraries you can do with 30k points?

It’s all cash basis now but you could do a Chicago to West Coast in the sleeper fairly easily.

can you get a statement credit for the points you accrue? if so, what is the point value?

No statement credit. Somone in reddit said you could cash out to gift cards for $300, but that doesn’t sound like a good deal.

Edit: And a PSA, both this card and the Amtrak no-AF cards are churnable. Opened World card Sept 2017, closed April 2018. Just applied again today and was auto-approved. 18/24, TU 4 inquiries.

I currently have a BoA checking account (opened May 2018, for bonus), Amtrak no-AF card (opened Sept 2015), and Biz Advantage Cash Rewards (opened June 2018). Previously held a second Amtrak no-AF card (opened March 2017, closed Nov 2017).

This one didn’t show for me until I tried a different browser + cleared cache. Great offer. Thanks!

Amazing offer, been waiting for this for a while. Now that SPG can’t transfer to amtrak after 8/1, these points are harder to accrue
