The Fine Print

  • To get your $150 or $200 Bonus offer: What to do: Apply for your first AAII Savings Account from Discover Bank (OSA) by 10/31/17. Enter invitation Code: AAIIBONUS when applying. Deposit a total interest of at least $15,000 into your account by 11/15/17 to earn a $150 Bonus or deposit a total of at least $20,000 into your account by 11/15/17 to earn a $200 Bonus.
  • Maximum eligibility is $200 per account.
  • What to know: Offer not valid for existing or prior Discover savings customers.
  • Account must be open when bonus is credited. Bonus will be credited to the account by 11/30/17.
  • Bonus is considered interest and will be reported on IRS Form 1099-INT.
  • Offer may be modified/withdrawn without notice.
  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

There are no fees to with this account.

Discover does not have any minimum balance requirement, and you can withdraw all the funds after opening the account and fulfilling the $15,000/$20,000 deposit requirement. You do obviously need to keep the account open until the bonus posts.

Our Verdict

The fine print states: “Offer not valid for existing or prior Discover savings customers”, despite that the bonus is working for people who have done the regular & AAA bonuses before. This looks like a pretty easy $600 from Discover. I’ll be adding it to our list of the best savings accounts.

Big thanks to readers, Rene & Yet Another Redditor who let us know. Learn how to find bonuses and contribute to the site here.

If and when the promo works, it couldn’t hurt to move $15k from my other AAA Discover savings account (deposit made for bonus purposes) to this one and roll the dice.

Nil
Nil

That would surely NOT work as it always needs to be ‘new money’ to discover.

Cole
Cole

just move it out… then back in.

Ryan
Ryan

That’s actually not required, per the terms of this promo and the AAA promo.

I figure why not open it, transfer 20k, see what happens.

No downside to me as my Chex score is already in the toilet (yet I still get approved for nearly every checking account I try)

Katherine
Katherine

Actually got the promo from moving from my Discover Savings to AAA savings without having to move it out to an external account and back in.

were you saying the bonus already posted in your AAA saving? thanks for the DP

kirk

always??? i seem to have seen a lot of DPs to the contrary. especially DPs from this thread ~ https://www.doctorofcredit.com/discover-aaa-100-savings-bonus-15000-deposit/

of course, ymmv and that they might have changed their terms (recently). hoping not!

Reg

Ryan, to get an accuarate data point, new money should be used. Even if the terms don’t say it, the systems may be coded to only recognize new money. Terms and systems differ all the time.

Other than that, I’m sure the DoC community appreciates you volunteering as tribute!

before I opened my first Discover savings acct, I talked to an agent to clarify whether I have to “park” $20K and for how long I should, if that is required. I was told I do NOT have to park the full $20K, they just require that $20K be posted to my account at a certain point and then I can take out amounts as I want to while keeping a small amount to keep it open until I get my bonus. I will then get my $200 bonus. I also clarified if it’s one offer per household and was told NO, it is one offer per person in a household as long as it is their first savings account. Great offer!

Hope this one works out similar to $100 AAA Savings bonus back in June which had the same language “Offer not available for existing Savings customer”.. worth a try since there is no additional Chex Inquiry. Time to arrange $20K now 🙂

JP
JP

Are you saying this is churnable? I had saving acct with them in 2015. I should get bonus if I open this account? Did you get it twice?

Klad
Klad

No it’s not about churning.. Regular Savings, AAA Savings and this new AAII Savings are all different products.. I received Regular Savings bonus early last year and then opened AAA Savings June this year and received the bonus although offer had the language “Not available for existing Savings (Regular) customer”

JP
JP

Ah. Thx for clarifying. I should then be eligible for this then.

Klad

If you haven’t opened AAA Savings, I would suggest going with that https://www.doctorofcredit.com/discover-aaa-savings-150200-bonus-1500020000-deposit/

JP
JP

Opening deposit is considered for total deposit? I can just meet requirement in one shot if that’s the case

Klad
Klad

Yes it does.. at some point you need to have 15K/20K posted to your account and that’s it

Anyone having extreme problems with their Discover deposit accounts? Originally found out when trying to open the AAA 200 bonus account, but then realized it’s not related to opening a specific account. I am unable to open any accounts w/ Discover. Called in Discover, and they were unable to do it. They are unable to update even the most basic of information such as citizenship. I currently have no citizenship on file. Discover said there was nothing they could do and they were forwarding it to a special team to look into it. It’s been a week. Call again?

Rene

FWIW, I don’t deserve credit for this. Yet Another Redditor found it.

Rene

I have an open “unbranded” Discover Savings account and the code didn’t work for me. I did not proceed with opening the AAII savings Account since the code was rejected.

Also, not that anybody opens this for the APY, but as Yet Another Redditor pointed out in his original comment: the AAII Savings has a slightly better APY of 1.20%.

Are these bonus promo churn-ablel? tia

Ryan
Ryan

The problem appears to be the offer code itself- I found a way to join AAII for $1 for 30 days, put that in the membership ID box, per the instructions of Discover and when I called them and told them it’s still not working, rep said she saw no AAII promo code.

I honestly think this promo just doesn’t exist.

Ryan
Ryan

Update- got an incredibly helpful Discover rep (1-800-388-1302) who said even though the promo isn’t working online, Discover will honor it. He added notes to that effect and was unequivocal that it will be credited to my account (and my wife’s!).

Another easy $400. Thanks, DofC.

Jim
Jim

Thanks, to confirm, you and your wife both applied online without promo, but called afterwards to manually tack it on?

Was the AAII membership ID necessary? Seems many folks did not put anything in for the AAA box.

Ryan
Ryan

Indeed- the promo wasn’t working for me or the Discover office people. They agreed to do it. If you ask for “Rob” (it seems like a small office) he will know what to do.

I signed up for AAII just in case. If you scroll up and down this page enough, you get the 30 days for $1 offer- http://www.aaii.com/join/index29f_2?clicksrc=

I have a credit card I have to cancel soon so I’ll simply change the credit card to the card I’m going to cancel before the 30 days is up and avoid any other AAII charges.

Jim
Jim

Great information, thanks.

Looks like the $1 AAII trial offer pops up as soon as I move the mouse on the regular Join Now page.

Will give this offer a few days before proceeding, hopefully with some more DPs. Still waiting for my regular savings bonus to post proceeding with AAII and AAA

Mike
Mike

As soon as the offer code “works” online I’ll stick my neck out and apply. Still awaiting the DISC AAA bonus from an account opened a few weeks ago. Worst case scenario is that I get neither that bonus or this one and move on. I personally think the disqualifying language from having a prior account for this offer refers only to AAII. So I don’t mind being the data point that hopefully proves it (once that promo code works).

eclipsor
eclipsor

I think it’s working now? “AAIIBONUS – Your offer code has been accepted.”

Or is everyone having a different issue?

Jim
Jim

Thanks for sharing this, definitely fixed since a few hours ago. Only issue being the same language about previous savings customers…

Upon entering my information and the promo code:

TO GET YOUR $150 OR $200 BONUS OFFER: WHAT TO DO: APPLY FOR YOUR FIRST AAII SAVINGS ACCOUNT FROM DISCOVER BANK (OSA) BY 10/31/17. MAXIMUM ELIGIBILITY IS $200 PER ACCOUNT. WHAT TO KNOW: OFFER NOT VALID FOR EXISTING OR PRIOR DISCOVER SAVINGS CUSTOMERS. ACCOUNT MUST BE OPEN WHEN BONUS IS CREDITED. BONUS WILL BE CREATED TO THE ACCOUNT BY 11/30/17. BONUS IS CONSIDERED INTEREST AND WILL BE REPORTED ON IRS FORM 1099-INT. OFFER MAY BE MODIFIED OR WITHDRAWN WITHOUT NOTICE.

Mike
Mike

Received the bonus today (10/25), Happy not only for the $200 but that I can provide a data point as follows:

1)I’ve had both the regular DISC Savings account as well as the DISC AAA Savings within the past 2 years and received a bonus on each. As I assumed, the disqualifying language for being a prior accountholder may refer only to a DISC AAII account.

2) I did NOT fund through transfer from one DISC account to another (ie $20K was brought in from an external source).

Jill
Jill

Was the AAII membership ID necessary? Did you put anything in the AAII box.

The real churner
The real churner

I just got the bonus too and confirm no membership needed nor new money.

Jill

When you applied for the AAII account, did you pre-fill the form by logging into your Discover account or did you enter all your details manually?

eclipsor
eclipsor

anyone know if it has to be one 15k+ deposit? or can I do like 2 7.5k deposits?

Mimi
Mimi

it is cumulative according to the rep I spoke with, $15K total just has to post at least one time as total deposit to your account and that’s good enough to earn the bonus. two $7.5K deposits will work.

this line ~ What to know: Offer not valid for existing or prior Discover savings customers.

does it mean ‘any’ discover savings or just the ‘regular’ savings? coz if it’s just the regular savings then in theory one can open 3 savings in a particular order and receive all 3 bonuses (would only apply to people who never had any discover savings. eliminates most of us here but perhaps can be tried for your SO or family member). here’s the app order i was thinking:
1 – open AAII savings
~ Offer not valid for existing or prior Discover savings customers. = CHECK!
2 – open AAA savings
~ Offer not valid for existing or prior AAA savings customers. = CHECK!
3 – open regular Discover savings
~ Offer not valid for existing or prior Discover savings customers = CHECK! coz you ONLY have AAII and AAA and not regular Savings!

just a theory and everything is murky right now. heck i haven’t even gotten my regular and AAA bonuses yet. and this AAII code isn’t working for anyone but seems to work if you call ‘Rob’ per Ryan’s post. 😀

Peter
Peter

People have been denied regular Discover Savings bonus for having AAA savings prior. Don’t think you can get all 3.

kirk
kirk

i see. i guess it means ‘any’ savings then. those crooks! lolz 😀

Ryan

I know people are laughing at this, but as someone who reads contracts for a living, I think this is totally reasonable.

thanks Ryan! i appreciate it. at least there’s one who believes in my crazy ideas and thoughts! 😀

I’ll give this a try even though I applied for the other two already. Worth a shot. Interestingly, this product appears different than the regular and AAA accounts. This one has a 1.20% rate vs. 1.15% for the other two. I wonder if that might be favorable.

Nick
Nick

Please do and share your experiences, as a regular and AAA account holder 🙂

It doesn’t look like the savings account incur a Chex inquiry, as I just opened mine a week ago and happened to request my Chex a few days ago.

CtownBin
CtownBin

I have never done either the regular Discover or the AAA savings bonuses. I know they each have increased bonuses right now. Is the best course of action to just do both of those ones, and not this AAII one?
In general, what would be the advantage of doing this deal over either/both of the other 2? And- if it is true as DOC indicated that one would NOT be eligible for this bonus if one has already done the regular Discover savings- then why would anyone ever sign up for this one? If one has never done the regular savings or the AAA one, then they’d just do those, since the terms are seemingly identical. And if one HAS done those, they’re not eligible for this one. So why is there even a post on this? Just want to make sure I’m not missing something.
Thanks!

Brandon
Brandon

Higher savings rate if keeping the account. 1.20% is pretty good.

kirk
kirk

coz sometimes the terms are not enforced. people would fulfill the requirements, ‘silently’ – adhering to ‘do no call the bank’ rule. then one day, the bonus would magically appear! if it doesn’t, to these ‘be the DP you want to see’ people it’s no big deal and move on. also, DoC posts ANY and ALL bank bonuses! so yeah, that’s why it’s here. he then offers his thoughts at the end of his post. it’s up to us what we want to do with it but the best thing about this site is… people share their DPs. and that’s how we, somehow, make ‘sound decision/s’. 🙂

but to answer your question.. yes, app for a either a regular savings first then AAA (lotsa DPs) -or- AAII first then AAA (no DPs but like you said terms are idential). *make sure AAA is your SECOND app not the first as there are DPs that denied regular savings bonus if you’ve had AAA prior.

as always, YMMV! goodluck!

SamSimon
SamSimon

“*make sure AAA is your SECOND app not the first as there are DPs that denied regular savings bonus if you’ve had AAA prior.”

Do you suggest to open Regular, then AAA, then AAII ? But you not sure?

The guy above wrote this:
“1 – open AAII savings
~ Offer not valid for existing or prior Discover savings customers. = CHECK!
2 – open AAA savings
~ Offer not valid for existing or prior AAA savings customers. = CHECK!
3 – open regular Discover savings
~ Offer not valid for existing or prior Discover savings customers = CHECK! coz you ONLY have AAII and AAA and not regular Savings! “

kirk
kirk

no one is sure. that’s why it’s just a theory on my part (coz there are no DPs with AAII at all). *i’m the guy who wrote both of your quotes.

one can try my theory (AAII -> AAA -> Regular) and see what happens. that’s all there is to it. Ryan seems to think it’s reasonable. I thought so too! 😀

but as always, ymmv!

right now it’s a waiting DP game. :p

SamSimon
SamSimon

oh, hey;)
“*make sure AAA is your SECOND app not the first as there are DPs that denied regular savings bonus if you’ve had AAA prior.”

If (AAII -> AAA -> Regular) then based on data points that you collected – people won’t get bonus because they will have AAA prior Regular?

kirk
kirk

SS, the concensus when this AAII was first mentioned in a post was you can only get 2 out of 3 discover savings bonuses because of the terms. thus i came up with that theory to go for 3 of 3. i devised it in a way that people would still get 2 of 3 bonuses with maybe a chance of getting a third one. hence, AAA as the 2nd app. *btw that quote was to answer a question. had nothing to do with my theory.

recently a couple of people went through CSR. see Ryan and TomT posts. this is promising and actually applies to most people here as most of us have app for regular and AAA already. so perhaps one can app in this order now ~ Regular, AAA then AAII with a better chance of going 3 of 3.

my theory is just that …a theory.

TomT
TomT

Doc, I thought the inconsistency of the wording between the AAA and AAII bonuses was odd (“Apply for your first AAA Online Savings Account from Discover Bank by 10/31/17. Enter Offer Code AAABONUS … Offer not valid for existing or prior AAA savings customers” vs. “Apply for your first AAII Savings Account from Discover Bank (OSA) by 10/31/17. Enter invitation Code: AAIIBONUS … Offer not valid for existing or prior Discover savings customers.”). Therefore, I called them to see what they truly intended on the bonuses. I just confirmed with a Discover banking rep that you ARE eligible for the $200 AAII bonus even if you have had or currently have a regular Discover savings account and/or the AAA online savings account. I had a Discover savings account a couple of years ago that I opened when the bonus was a paltry $50. It is now closed, but I opened my AAA account yesterday with that promotion. Knowing all of this, they said I still qualified for the AAII bonus as well. I became an AAII member for a month for $1 to avoid any issues with that validation. The are notating this on my account so that I will not have to prove it later. Please let your other readers know they can double dip and get $400 per person.

anne

How did become an AAII member for $1/month? The lowest option that I can see is like $29/year. Thanks.

Brandon
Brandon

That’s my situation. I’m neither AAA or AAII. The accounts show up in my Discover portal each with their unique label and no one ever asked for membership detail even during security calls. Funded with new funds already so we’ll see. I’m awaiting all three $200 bonuses so $600 per person. Same with wife! If everything works this could be s huge offer.

henry
henry

what is the order you created those three accounts?
are you transferring in new fund or just from one discover account to another?

thanks
