Avoiding Fees

Blue Hill Bank offers a free checking account, the only requirement is that you must open it with at least $10. Their fee schedule says that there is an early account termination fee of $25 if the account is closed within 90 days.

Our Verdict

This is the best deal they have ever offered by far, previous deals were for $300 in Uber credit or $200 in cash. Really nice that there is no monthly fee to worry about and the requirements are fairly easy to meet. This is easily one of the best checking bonuses currently available. Shame it’s only available in branch at Seaport and it’s not $350 like last year.

How do they define new customers? I closed my account late 2016

Blue Hills closed my account due to inactivity sometime in early May 2016. I opened another account with them on June 1, 2016, and was still awarded the bonus.

These guys are Chex sensitive. I was denied last year.

Any idea what they count as direct deposit? I’m in MA and this is tempting.

Following as well – if they accept ACH as direct deposit, I’d be in for sure!

Thanks Doc(s).
For deals like this, besides the bank only having branches in MA, how do we know it is limited to state residents only. In their offer, they did not mention an exclusion based on state. Do we try to open an account to find out?

Ok, I tried to open the account, first thing it says is:
“NOTE: You MUST live or work in Massachusetts to open an account with Blue Hills Bank”

Closing the account is a pain too, FYI. Refused to close online or over the phone. they asked me for a notarized letter delivered in branch. Ain’t nobody got time for that.

Amex Starwood definitely runs through as a cash advance. I disabled my cash advance and the card would not go through at all. I used my chase sapphire reserve for $50, not sure if it went through as a purchase or not yet. Not worth gambling $300 worth of cash advance fees to get $10 worth of points imho.

The fee schedule indicates that the free checking account has a $25 minimum opening deposit, which matches your info in The Fine Print section but not the Avoiding Fees section.

This may have just died – can’t load the page anymore, was able to earlier today.

I talked to their representative in the morning. She said that the offer is available only at the seaport branch in Boston. It will be there only for a couple of weeks.

I e-mailed a banker this morning and she told me the promotion is still going on in-branch, only at the Seaport location. It’s a new location so that’s probably why they are doing the promotion. They have been rearranging their branches recently.

So I can confirm and have the flyer for the promotion in hand, posted an image here:

$350 bonus very much alive, but in branch only at Seaport, Milton and Westwood locations. The flyer DOES say it is available online even though the rep seemed to say this is in branch only so YMMV…

Should add, I was able to sign up with the promotion on my account today (4/7).

Opened up online and made an opening deposit of $1000 by BOA Travel Rewards card, posted as a purchase. Balance shows $1000 as available. Had set CA limit to $500 a while ago. Now waiting for my employer DD to hit the account. Great info, DoC!

Opened online on 4/4. Used CSP to fund $1,000 and it posted as a purchase on 4/7.
