Our Verdict

You used to be able to open this account for $250 even if you weren’t targeted, but that was shut down. This is the same offer but only for $100. Still not a bad bonus considering it’s $100, doesn’t require a direct deposit and you can fund with a credit card. I doubt we will see a $250 public bonuses and I think the chances of being targeted would be quite low. Because of all that I will be adding it to the best checking bonus list.

I currently hold the account from the previous bonus. Close it out and hit this again?

DP of my extensive issues with TCF:

Signed up for previous promo of $250 using the code from the mailer (JDM250), before they were enforcing the targeted mailer requirement. After account opening, I sent $500 from my existing Chase checking account and Chase called TCF to verify I controlled the account (probably because my Chase account was new too).

This call somehow made TCF freeze my account. I called and they told me Chase had to call again to verify I controlled the account making the deposit to TCF. I spoke to a local banker and she called in front of me, and said it was good to go. Called TCF back, they said I had to drive to the branch (100+ miles for me) and verify my identity with them. I did it, thinking I’d eventually get the bonus and it would be worth the hassle. They told me to wait 10 business days and if I hadn’t heard back, to call.

I waited until the end and called, and they told me because it was still closed I couldn’t reopen the account and that I’d have to drive back to drain the account of what had deposited. Apparently the call from Chase was enough to release my deposit, but not enough to reopen my account.

Opened a CFPB case against them, it is ongoing. Just be careful with them, is my only advice.

    posted as purchase on Altitude…

    $250 was sweet.

    • Darv says:

A little gutsy putting the bank funding on the AR, Dan. You have my respect, sir.

I’m hoping this $1,000 credit card funding holds up. I’ll have the wife apply in a few weeks. Gotta scatter the Chexsystems inquiries a little. There were some comments that CSRs with TCF were knocking down the allowed credit card funding.

I did this bonus but I doubt TCF will be able to enforce the household limit. I’ll report back with her results if the account is opened.

    • Superchurn says:

goddamnit…now I’m tempted to try on wife’s new Altitude. $1000 in spend is $1000 in spend, and a successful DP makes me very tempted to try

  4. Jeff says:

Thx. Opened and funded $1k with CFU. Received initial FA but was cleared as a purchase.

  5. JVP says:

Anyone knows if non-citizens, resident aliens can open the account online?

  6. Brian says:

DP – I thought I wouldn’t get the $250 bonus because they started shutting it down, but I checked and it posted 9/5! I totally wrote it off and considered closing the account, but had a nice surprise when I logged in this morning.

I’ll try the $100 for my wife even though it says 1 per household…. something in their software allowed my $250 bonus to go through…

  7. Clippy says:

Does TCF require you to purchase paper checks when signing up online? The $18 (or so) cost for a box of checks always stopped me from applying online.

  8. Jason says:

    Opened 9/13
9/15 $1000 from Fidelity VISA posted to account (not sure if purchase, haven’t received statement yet)
    9/18 $100 Reward posted
    9/23 Received debit card

Received reward before even receiving the debit card, but I’ll still make the $250 purchase to ensure it isn’t reversed.

No data points yet on multiple per household, so I’ll try one with my spouse to see if they will post.

  9. Susanne says:

The direct link does not go to the offer only the home website – is that correct? I can’t find any info regarding the offer on their site.

  10. Jeff says:

Would buying a $250 MO at Walmart or grocery store satisfy the $250 debit card purchase requirement?

  11. Ozzie says:

Funded $1K from Arrival+. Bonus posted 3 days later. Waiting for debit card.

  13. David of Michigan says:

Frustrating experience but was resolved in my favor with help from the CFPB (Consumerfinance.gov)

August 9th – Did the telephone call to open the account with representative as was advised on here and the agent inputted the promotion code.
While trying to credit the account with Fidelity Rewards Visa, the credit card denied the effort to credit account $1,000
Later that day finished the application online by crediting the TCF account with a Citi DoubleCash which posted as purchase for $1,000

Sept. 12th – $500 transferred to account from Fidelity Cash Management

Sept. 25th – Called TCF rep to ask why I didn’t receive bonus yet. He said I met requirements, but then he said did I open the account online? and what was the promotion code used? I said I did it on the phone, he made me read the mailer that said you have to open it in branch, and I said the mailer didn’t explicitly say you can’t do it over the phone and that customer support said it was fine when I called to open account.
He reluctantly said I would get the bonus the next day.
Sept. 26th – No bonus as promised
Sept. 27th – Called TCF rep, and rep said she would have to do research and maybe they’ll call me back in a few days to let me know whether or not they”ll give me a bonus.
Sept. 27th – Filed complaint with CFPB
Oct. 12th – Bonus posted, and company “apologizes” but claims I opened the account online without the promotion bonus code.
