[Note that M&T Bank is one of the few banks that doesn’t give you a grace period, the requirements mentioned below must be completed your first month to keep it fee-free.]

EZChoice Checking

This account has a monthly fee of $9.95, soon changing to $6.95.

  • Monthly fee is waived by making just ONE transaction such as a deposit, withdrawal, or debit purchase.

MyChoice Checking

This account has a monthly fee of $6.95 that can be waived with any of the following methods:

  • Receive direct deposits totaling $200 or more
  • Make 10 or more monthly debit card purchases
  • Keep an average daily balance of $500 (might be $1,500 depending on your area) or more

Basic Banking

This account has a non-waivable $3 monthly fee.

Early Account Termination Fee

Update: Looks to be $50 now.

Our Verdict

In the past (here & here) people have successfully gotten the bonus without being targeted, but YMMV as always. They also have a $150 bonus with a landing page that some people may prefer. There are two great things about M&T bank:

  • Their bonuses are extremely churnable
  • Their bonuses post extremely quickly after meeting the requirements

We’ve added this to our best bonus page now that somebody has confirmed getting the bonus without being targeted.

Big thanks to reader, cloknem & Bagel_Fatigue on /r/churning who let us know. Please consider sharing bank bonuses with this site so we can make it even better.

  1. DirtyLilRat says:

How much time needs to pass after closing a previous checking account?

    • Justin says:

I believe there is no requirement.. I was able to get 2 bonuses within a week of each other in August. I still have them open because it hasn’t been 180 days. Unsure if I should open a third or close the first 2, then open this one.

    • Eric says:

I was about to ask the same thing. I still have my account open.

No terms are listed here about not receiving a bonus within a certain amount of time. Does that mean there are no such restrictions?

  2. Greg says:

    I second the above question,

Also, if I already have one of the accounts, can I open a different type and get the bonus?

  3. Eureka. says:

I keep seeing “easy” and “churnable” which is great, but the 180 termination means this can only be done twice a year right? or can I presumably, do this over and over, make 150, pay 50. next month, make 150, pay 50… ect

  4. MM says:

FWIW, Arizona doesn’t seem to be included in this offer. If you go to the bonus landing page and put in an AZ zip, it says not offered in this region. This happened with their bonus offer sometime last year too. Guess the snowbirds don’t wanna share the wealth:)

  5. John says:

I have opened 3 EZ Choice Checking accounts last year. The first one through the DOC link and the second using the promo code QF. The nationwide bonus came back around in November and I pulled the trigger a 3rd time. Each time I used my payroll and received the bonus the next day. I have closed the original account and am now waiting on the 180 days for the other two. Transfers between your M&T account will avoid the monthly fee. Opened the 4th one today and hoping it works again.

  6. JP says:

Please. Overzealous people please. Don’t kill this deal. Wait at least three months to open new account. They have regular bonuses and no need to apply twice or thrice in a month. That is what kills the deal. Every. Time.

  7. EO says:

Where is the geographic restriction listed? I successfully opened an account from IL and entered the promotion code when I did so. Should I expect not to receive the bonus?

    • Chap says:

Did you open with a Drivers license or passport? I want to use a passport but they do not seem to have that option

      • EO says:

Drivers license. Already got the account number and successfully setup online banking. Only question will be whether they restrict the bonus in terms of geography (even though I saw no mention of this in the ad.) I suppose I will be the dp I want. Will keep everyone posted.

        • Chap says:

I’m in too! Except I will be using an out of state DL with an in-state address (parents address). There are previous DPs (one I could find) that say they got the bonus without the state restriction so we’ll see.

  8. Johnny says:

I got the following message, anyone else get this before? This will be my 3rd checking acct in last 2 months so perhaps that could be a reason?

    Application Review

Thank you for applying for an M&T Bank account. We are in the process of verifying the information you have provided.

You will be contacted by telephone or e-mail within the next three (3) business days.

Please retain the following confirmation number for your records:*************

Thank you for your patience and for choosing M&T.

  9. y says:

Any way of getting the account and routing number online once the account is opened? They gave it to me as soon as i opened the account but i dont see it anymore and per the rep I can only request it in bank or wait till monthly statement generates…?

    • velks says:

Try generating a direct deposit form, that should have those two numbers in it.

      • Patti says:

I tried this. It simply opens a new window offering to download a dd form but it’s a blank with instructions to fill it out and print it.
I had to go into branch to get my acct number. They would not give me acct numbers for my hubby or son of course, so they will have to go in themselves.
Their branch hours suck for people who work days and occasional Saturdays so who knows when they will get the chance to get to a branch. It’s possible we can view it on next statement by the time they can get to a branch. Sigh…. 🙁

Note to self: Slow down, pay attention and READ when opening accounts!!

    • RS says:

I’m having trouble with it too. Can’t find it online and I guess I’ll need to go in branch for it. When I close the account I’ll cite the poor web interface as to why, which is true.

    • Robert says:

use the chase secure message trick. Send a secure message then look in your outbox and open the message you just sent, it will give the full account number.

      • y says:

Thanks. Wish I had known this earlier. Had to go in bank.

      • loren says:

Where can I find my routing #? I did this to get the account # but need both to set up ACH

        • Tom says:

          Routing Number… 022000046

          • Tom says:

Upate:There are three M&T Bank routing numbers based on the state in which you opened your account. They are:

022000046 – New York, New Jersey and Connecticut
            031302955 – Pennsylvania and Delaware
052000113 – Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, DC

I live in Virginia but opened account online and was given and use the 022.. routing number successfully.

          • Loren says:

Cool thanks yeah I saw that but I did online from California so I’m unsure of what it is. Would it be the same as my 1st account i made?

          • Ken says:

@Loren – Yes your 2nd account will have the same routing as your first.

  10. Jake says:

So we all know that we can get both the $150 and $200 offer. The question is how often can you repeat this process? Once per expiration date? Going to test this out in a couple of days.

  11. bt says:

When I go to apply I am getting an https certificate error. No way in hell am I going to put my SS in that.

  12. AD says:

I went to branch today in DE. I was told that $200 is targeted and I was offered $150 bonus instead.

    • Pat says:

This is interesting. I opened my first M&T EZChoice account (also on 2/11) using the QK code and received a $150 bonus on 3/3 right after meeting the $100 DD requirement. Seems most DPs in this thread specify their account was opened some date prior to 2/11. I wonder if M&T began to separate bonus amounts based on branch vs online application.

  13. jcb says:

Now I’m confused. Comments here say can churn with no real date but this reddit comment says mailer had 6 month language:

  14. crystal says:

has anyone who wasn’t targeted got $200 bonus?

  15. Paul says:

I was not targeted but got the following letter in the actual snail mail:

At your earliest convenience, please fax to us copies of the documents listed below:
    Social Security Card
    Recent utility bill.

Then a fax and a phone number are listed. Seems odd to just fax my SS card to them but I suppose I’ve already given it over in the app anyhow.

  16. YJ says:

dp: opened my third account last week online with QK promo code, bonus posted today with DD from my Barclays saving. The previous 2 were opened last year in Sep in branch at the same time.
    Easy $550 (1st:$150, 2nd:$200, 3rd:$200) and thank you DOC!!

    • Captain Koo says:

I did the $200 using Promo Code: QK
I planned to do $150 using Promo Code: QM

As you said, you opened 2 accounts at the same time (Month) and still got bonus

I will try using promo QM soon

All your 3 accounts are EZ checking????

  17. zach says:

Opened a EZ Choice checking, transferred $150 from Wells Fargo, waiting for bonus.
About open multiple checking with M&T, I know it has to be different promo code, but can it be the same type of checking? i.e. Open send EZ choice with promo code QM.

    • YJ says:

3 EZ Choice checking accounts with 3 different promo codes (Q? (do not remeber the 2nd letter), QM, and QK). all bonus posted!

      • JB67 says:

Thanks so much for the info!

        Curious about a few things,…

        1) Did you open all 3 on the same day?
        2) QK was the $200 bonus. What was the bonus for QM and what was the bonus for the one you can’t remember?
        3) Is it possible you did the $250 bonus, which was code QO? If so, then how did you do EZ Choice, since that one needed to be the Premium Checking account.
        4) Did you have an current M&T account when you did these latest 3 apps?

      • Ken says:

How long between opening new accounts?

  18. Justin says:

I opened 2 M&T Ezchoice accounts back in August and got the bonus for both. One was $150 and the other was $200.

Opened this account on 2/9, did a $100 push from Discover Savings which posted today (2/15) and the $200 bonus also posted today. Loving M&T Bank

  19. JP says:

Some rookie posted this on SD. No problem. What’s more troublesome is he/she added word “churnable” smh. Better get on this while you can.

  20. ray says:

Can’t open online for some reason. Final page told me to call or visit a branch. Has anyone been approved over the phone or in branch, even though not targetted?

  21. Chris says:

This code differs from the $200 bonus last year. This years $200 code is QK and last years was QF

  22. JC says:

Great site! I am barely new at this, and I appreciate immensely all the info that you provide.

I tried to applied to the M&T Bank EZChoice Checking last night 02/16/17; got a notice stating: “we are unable to process your application trough the online channel.” I called them and a representative said that the system was unable to verify me. I asked if it has to do with ChexSystem. She said that the system does not provide further information.

I did opened 2 other checking accounts online that day at TD Bank & Wells Fargo, with no issues whatsoever. It has been more than a year since I have opened a new Bank Account. I did tried to open a Santander Bank checking accnt online without luck last summer. Also, I closed a Citizens Bank checking accnt on December, and a B of A checking accnt last month. I have a Discover Bank at the moment and B of A Savings.

I decided to order a ChexSystem report and Score. If they did a softpull, I do know that my credit info is up-to-date and I have a FICO score in 760s, so that wouldn’t be an issue.

Based on your experience, do you think I should try to open the M&T accnt again (perhaps I made an error, system glitch/update since it was late at night), or should I just wait for the ChexSystem report?

On the other hand, I read that is recommended NOT to open more than 8 Bank accnts per year, is that correct? If so, how much in time apart would it be appropriate/recommended? Obviously, I want to avoid any red flags. I do NOT intend to open more than 5. Any advised would be much appreciate it. Thank you guys!

    • Gadget says:

Per my experience, TD Bank & Wells Fargo use EWS. M&T uses Chex. I would get your Chex report and clear up the issue before applying again.

Sounds to me like your Chex report may have inaccurate info, or you failed to properly answer the knowledge based questions on the app. (pro-tip: have your creditkarma pulled up so you can see when CC’s were opened, loan payment amounts, etc.)

I wouldn’t worry about the 8 per year rule, unless you anticipate moving to an new area and having to setup new banking. MOST banks are not that picky about inquires, but a few are. They use Chex is “identify you” and make sure you didn’t leave banks due to bounced checks – unresolved negative balances.

To do this “hobby” right you need to keep your hub and B&M banks open to facilitate your regular banking tasks/needs. Keep them open and then you don’t need to cap your inquiries, IMHO.

      • JC says:

Thank you Gadget! I got my ChexSystem report and no inaccurate info, nor negative. Also, no M&T inquiry. When I applied, the identity based questions did NOT came up. Re-applied again and same situation happened. I called and was asked to go personally to a branch. Bummer. Thanks again mate!

  23. EO says:

I posted before, but just wanted to confirm that I just received the bonus even though I am located in Chicago

  24. Jonner says:

Dr, you wrote “@Drofcredit: If you do checking bonuses, read this:

The post is this one. Useless to me as I am not in one of these states? Am I missing something?

  25. cf says:

Live in Illinois, got this message: “Thank you for applying for an M&T Bank account. Due to the information you provided, we are unable to process your application through the online channel. For assistance, please contact us at 1-800-724-3222 or visit one of our local branches.”

Might have been because they asked me which bank card I got in January 2017 and there were two correct answers. I’ll call tomorrow.

  26. bmanamex says:

For those who had an account prior to opening more:
Did you check Yes or No under “Do you currently have an M&T personal checking, savings or CD account?”

  27. Michael says:

I received a mailer with a different promotion code, also for $200. That one was “QL” so I might try this bonus as well. In terms of the “QL” offer, just a DP from my wife’s account:

    2/3 – Account opened
2/21 – Withdrawal from Venmo cleared
    2/21 – Bonus posted

Easy peasy. My account is still in process – used Discover Savings transfer. Will update DP when/if it clears.

  28. wondering says:

you say that the EZchoice checking is waivable if “Monthly fee is waived by making just ONE transaction such as a deposit, withdrawal, or debit purchase.” does that mean once and your good for 180 days? meaning after that i wont get hit with fees even if i dont do anything?????

  29. Amber says:

Opened a second EZ Choice checking account and just received the $200 bonus. Had opened the first one in January with the $150 bonus. I answered “yes” during the application when they asked if I had any other M&T accounts.

  30. yusuuf says:

Received bonus two days after i DD. ACH’d out, now they’re saying if you need to pay an early account termination fee, you need to pay it in bank. Bummer.

  31. wondering says:

i dont remember if i used code QL or QK what should i do???

    • You could try contacting them asking what the terms of the promotion are

      • wondering says:

        I did thanx

        • Deb says:

Did you get the info you were looking for? I was sure I was keeping the codes straight but then I second guessed myself.

I went back to see if my original EZ checking account had posted the code with the bonus but they hadn’t. Otherwise I was just going to wait for this to new one to post then verify and open the next account.

  32. Gadget says:

I think I had an anomaly, or maybe a “cookie error”? Did anyone notice that on the confirmation page if it gave the M&T New York state routing number? I have had other M&T accounts, and usually I get RTN 052000113 for my state… But, this time the confirmation page gave me RTN 022000046.

I am second guessing myself that maybe I selected the wrong state when filling out the form, and used Chrome auto-fill. But if I did that, seems like I wouldn’t have gotten approved and past the KBA’s? So that leads me to believe it is because of this promo code. Strange. Hoping it doesn’t affect the opening, processing of the account, or the bonus.

  33. Shawn says:

DP: Received M&T’s $160 bonus in December. Applied for $200 Bonus using QK and a Discover push 2/23. Received the $200 bonus 2/28 🙂

  34. DirtyLilRat says:

Opened a second account, but only my first account appears when I log in. Am I supposed to do something to get both accounts to show up when I log in?

    • JB99 says:

If you opened the new account late in the day, after 9pm or 10pm EST, the new account won’t show up on when you log in until late the next morning.

When you apply early in the day, the new account shows up instantly.

      • Amy says:

I signed up yesterday morning for a second account and it’s still not linked in any way to my first online account. I check “yes” for whether I already had an M&T account and gave them my account number. Is this a bad sign?

  35. Superchurn says:

Opened 3/2/17 with QK offer code with an Oregon address. Bonus posted 3 days later along with the $100 Santander ACH “DD”

    • Superchurn says:

DP: Wife also opened with QK and an oregon address with a $200 ACH from Ally. Bonus posted 3 days later.

  36. gustave ferbert says:

Unique DP: Applied for EZChecking online with Michigan address using QK and received bonus.
    3/5 – Account opened.
3/10 – Initial deposit credited to my account.
    3/14 – $200 ACH push from USAA
    3/14 – $200 bonus posted

This was so easy that I just applied for a second EZChecking using QL. Will follow-up when bonus posts. Thanks DOC!

  37. andrew says:

I’m going to ask this question because I’ve already maxed out all the bonuses, but… does anyone have a DP on whether the same code can be used twice? I know it’s not supposed to allow that, but… I think it could work.

    • Ken says:

You have all 5 accounts and received the bonus for all of them? Any accounts for a significant other? How long did you wait between opening new accounts? I have 3 for me, one for my wife and on the 2nd for her she got the pending message.

      • andrew says:

I have 4 accounts (not in NY), no significant other sadly. I opened them basically 1 a week. I opened, got the bonus, then opened another.

        • Ken says:

There are 5 bonuses total 😉

That’s what I was doing, but I stupidly tried for an account for me and my wife on the same day and though different browsers would help.

          • andrew says:

The 5th being the NY only one or one people have yet to see?

          • Patti says:

I signed up myself, hubby and 20 yr old son one right after the other. Actually I did this for 2 M&T accounts approx 1 week apart.

          • Ken says:

            @Andrew – $150, $160, $200, $200, $250.

          • Eric says:

The $160 offer is for NY only. That’s why he wrote “not in NY” to imply that he did the 4 bonuses he’s eligible for.

          • Ken says:

I don’t live in any of their states and I’ve gotten bonuses from them.

          • Eric says:

Will specifically wrote “NY only” for the $160 bonus. I haven’t been following that thread too closely. Have people that don’t live in NY gotten bonuses for it?

          • Ken says:

I’m just assuming that they aren’t enforcing any of their other state restrictions that the NY Only terms aren’t being enforced either. I’ll be able to try in a week or two.

  38. Yoshi says:

    Applied 3/12
Opening deposit posted 3/17* (actually still pending)
    WF transfer 3/16
    Bonus posted 3/16

*Note: I already had multiple M&T accounts before I opened this account, including an account I used to get the $150 bonus. In fact, the opening transfer came (or is coming, it’s yet to post) from one of those M&T accounts. I did not have to “hide” the fact that I was a current customer.

  39. Ken says:

Wife and I both missed calls from M&T yesterday, but neither left us any voicemails.

  40. Daniel says:

    Hey Sir Charles,

There a new $200 bonus for code QI i was informed and applied for while in branch. It started 3/24 but I have no idea when it expires.I went into a branch to open a M&T ez choice checking using QL however they couldn’t find the code and instead they gave me that.

  41. Mike t says:

Any issue having multiple accounts of the same type? I got 4 bonuses already. Can I open up another ezchoice checking with a new bonus offer or will it deny me a duplicate account.

  42. Patti says:

We did the $250 bonus & the $200 bonus a week apart. I didn’t have any problem downgrading from Premium checking to EZ checking after the bonus posted but Capital One 360 froze my son’s accounts until he called to explain why he had 2 M&T accounts on his list of linked external accounts. I could see why this might raise some red flags for their security dept but they kept him on hold while they called M&T to verify that both accounts were indeed his.
Kind of weird that they chose a 20 year old to pick on when dh & I both had the same situation and are much more experienced at banking than our son. He’s been a Cap One customer since he was around 10 or 12 so it’s not just a new account issue.

Just something to consider. So now I’ll make sure I transfer out everything except $0.50 minimum, once the bonus is posted, then remove M&T as an external account. I can transfer that 50 cents back and forth so both M&T accounts have some kind of activity each month so no service fees and just before I close it, I’ll use the debit card to reload an Amazon gift card to pull out the last few cents.

  43. MarcoPolo says:

Great tip @Patti regarding moving 50 cents back and forth between M&T accounts.
Now regarding Problems with Capital One 360.
That’s why I have an Ally account.
Ally allows you to link TWENTY external accounts.
Not only that but it also does “instant verification” for most banks so that you don’t have to wait for the “trial deposits” to post.
It also has dedicated “Activity” page where you can see all the transfers etc.
As I have said earlier, there are many many other advantages in having an Ally account.
I hardly ever use my Capital One 360 account which pales in comparison to Ally 🙂
Try it out and you’ll never go back to Capital One.

    • Patti says:

I did check out the link uou posted from fatwallet and it seemed to have quite a few complaints about the website itself having a lot of issues.
Also I have a lot of sub-accounts with Cap One with various automatic transfers. It would take a lot of time & effort to set all of that up again with Ally.
My gripes with Cap One are minor and as of yet are not bad enough to make me switch.
Also there are many, many data points regarding Cap One transfers triggering direct deposit bonuses and barely any for Ally. Maybe it’s simply a matter of popularity differences but to me Cap One is still reliable.

      • MarcoPolo says:

I never had any issues with Ally website.
I have both Ally and Capital one so I am in a good position to compare 🙂
In addition to the things I have already mentioned about Capital One another thing I hate is that that Capital One holds you money “hostage” for few days once it reaches your account. Ally doesn’t do that.
At the end of the day it’s your choice but I can assure you that once you try Ally you’ll never go back to Capital One. Everything is a breeze with Ally.

        • Harry says:

Any referrals, bonuses, etc for opening Ally account currently available? I too am currently C1 customer but agree with you on the issues with C1 and have been looking for alternatives. I am sold based on your feedback and thanks for that. Only right to give you referral credit.

            @ Harry
I am not aware of Ally ever having any bonuses. It is still worth having an account with Ally since it makes it very easy to do these bank bonuses deals.
I was actually a GMAC customer which reincarnated into Ally. Prior to doing these bank bonus deals, I was just using my Ally account as a hub to move money from my one bank account to another.
I am also with Capital one since it was known as ING Direct.

Applied for the $200 promo using the new QI code online. Will report how it goes next week when the bonus posts.

    • MarcoPolo says:

      That’s great NBG.
      Keep them coming 🙂 🙂 🙂

Hmm… I have 3 m&t accounts currently open. I tried this one and I get the usual confirmation but it doesn’t actually list the account number. Just says EZ Choice Checking with no number like normal, then the routing number

      • Harry says:

Happened to me as well last night – I had to call this morning to get my account number. One person said they cannot give over the phone but after couple of transfers the third person gave it after some verification of personal details. It might be because at times their systems are down like in at night (computers need to sleep too ?:-)) or also because I pressed a “previous” button on the application – no this is not the browser button, but just pressing even the previous button could cause the failure it appears (just from my experience that is)

      • MarcoPolo says:

No need to worry. You’ll receive your Debit card in the mail and by that time your new account will show up under your previous login.
Once it shows up then you can SM about your account number and it will show up in your sent SM (secure message) header.

      • Patti says:

So are you thinking this is some computer glitch? Or that maybe 3 checking accounts is the max they allow. Are they 3 different types of checking or all EZ?

  45. Cicero says:

Fifth bonus posted today. Ally transfer used again.

    • Trey says:

Did you have any problems opening 5 accounts? Just wondering.. any calls or mail from M&T? Or requesting additional things? Or just any annoyance?

      • Cicero says:

Nothing like that. After the 3rd account, the checking account number didn’t appear right after the application. This meant waiting for the checking account number to arrive via snail mail which delayed the bonus by about a week.

    • Dollar Wells says:

Did Ally ask you to do the two micro deposits initially? Wondering if that impacts whether it reads it as a DD.

  46. Luke says:

Anyone that wasn’t able to open their 2nd or 3rd account couple days after their 1st, were you able to open the 2nd or 3rd later?

  47. zalmy says:

Just got a mailer for M&T offer code QJ. 200 dollar bonus, requires a $100 direct deposit. Until August 12th
