Our Verdict

The best bonuses from KeyBank are when they offer $300 for opening a Key Express account. Unfortunately those aren’t very frequent anymore/at all and it seems like this offer is as good as it gets these days for KeyBank. They also have the following bonuses in other areas:

I think I’ll start adding these bonuses to our best bank account bonus page as even the $200 bonus is pretty good in comparison to other banks and the requirements to get the bonus and keep the account fee free aren’t too high. I personally don’t think the $300 bonus is worth considering due to how hard it is to keep the account fee free.

Big thanks to reader, Vijay who let us know. Learn how to find bonuses and contribute to the site here.

  1. deek says:

So if I’m in Brooklyn NY i don’t qualify?

  2. Dan says:

For Key@work program member, can someone explain that. Do ACH transfers that trigger DD for the sake of the bonus also count as DD for Key@work for the sake of keeping the account free? (referring to the $300 bonus and the $1000 DD for waiving account fee)

  3. Frito Pendejo says:

I did one of these before and it was pretty painless. I did $500 ach as qualifying DD (discover) AND 8x debits because it seemed like the debits didn’t work one month. Bonus posted quickly and I closed it out 6mo later

    • Aditya Shrivastava says:

Will doing $0.50 Amazon reloads count as debit card purchases?

      • Frito Pendejo says:

It seemed to, thats the only debit I ever made. One month I got charged a fee, so I started doing ach and debits to be safe. Im not sure if I made a mistake that one month or their IT is unreliable

    • Brian says:

Just how quickly did your bonus post after meeting all requirements? I me too all requirements about two weeks ago and still no bonus. I think the offer said something about “withinn 90 days”.

  4. NBG says:

They are chex sensitive. They have small signboard in every branch about this.

  5. Razzputin says:

Has anyone outside of the target states tried to get the bonus?

    • Nick says:

I live in NJ, and last time I’ve opened an account on the phone. Mentioned that I worked in NY and asked to make me eligible for the offer.
I was able to get the promotion applied to my account.

  7. JP says:

can’t you change your account type and then it will be easier to manage six months after you get bonus? I believe most back waive monthly charge for at least couple months

  8. Bub says:

The hassle free checking account wass the worst account I ever had. It was nothing but hassle. I had problems receiving the account number, then they froze my account when I logged in away from my home State. Still they froze my cash for 4 months. Finally I hsd to use CFPB intervention to get the 100 signup bonus. Good luck.

  9. Gadget says:

I am bolding going into a branch tomorrow in the target area and going where no bonus miner has gone before. Well, a few other bonus miners based on Chex sensitive data points, but I am going to try anyway.

I spoke to a banker today to see if I would be able to apply in branch, use my e-mail promo code, even though I am from out of state. He said it was fine as long as the personal code had not been used before, and had my name on it. I also asked about numerous Chex inquires would disqualify me, and he said all banks use Chex, but as long as I don’t have outstanding debts he couldn’t see why it wouldn’t be approved. However, he said all he does is input the account information and the computer decides if the account is approved. I am also a former First Niagara customer (Key Bank bought them out in 2015 I believe) – not sure if that helps or hurts my odds – I did a bonus with First Nag in 2014. I mentioned it, and he said as long as the account has been closed 12 or more months, I would still qualify for the bonus.

Going to go do a bonus dance for good luck… Hopefully I will be posting positive results in a couple days.

    • Goodluck and thanks as always!

    • Gadget says:

Fail. Denied. Banker was implying that numerous accounts should not deny me from getting an account, and that I am on “a (bad) list”. I assured him that I do not have derogatory remarks… But he has no power to do anything and the system is in control. The denial sheet has a 1-800 to call… Which I am pretty sure is to Chex. I will examine on another day when I am not so pissed off.

Afterwards, I drove a few miles to a Citizens Bank supermarket branch – instant approval & pre-qualified for a CC. No branches in home state VA. Banker told me Venmo will count as DD, if I didn’t have a job. LOL. Also, he said ANY deposit keeps Citizens account free… Even just a few cents.

DP: Keybank will allow any out-of-state person with 2 forms of ID apply in-branch. Inquiry sensitive – thier bankers are clueless – they just know how to push buttons. 10+ this year.

Huntington, Chase, and Associated Bank – hitting each this week or Monday.

  10. larry says:

Looks like the fee structure on the $300 bonus has a balance requirement of $100k not $10k.

Waived for the first 3 months4, $50.00 thereafter

To avoid a $50.00 monthly Maintenance Service Charge:

Maintain a minimum of $100,000 in any combination of checking, savings, CDs, retirement deposits and investments (including annuity balances reflected on your Key Investment Services LLC (KIS) account statement)5, OR
If you are a Key@Work program member and have at least $5,000 in cumulative direct deposits each statement cycle.

    • boogieforward says:

Damn, this is too much for me. Can anyone else confirm? Doc, can you update if this is confirmed?

    • boogieforward says:

Did some Googling and the Key Advantage account has a $10k minimum to waive the fee. This may be referring to one of the other types like Privilege, etc.

  11. SS says:

Tried to open a $200 Key Express account today online for PA address (17202). After accepting my info I was declined due to ‘information on my Chex report’.

I’ve opened a lot of accounts the past 2 years (~20), but this is the only outright Check rejection I have gotten so I can confirm they are Chex sensitive

    @William
You might want to get rid of [Expired] from the title 🙂

      Use OFFER CODE OAPE0917

      • joanne says:

Larry, the code OAPE0917 appears to be for the $200 offer. What is the code for the $300 offer?

      • joanne says:

Received clarification on this promo since there are multiple offers and quite confusing. In order to get the $300 promo with the least amount of relationship banking ($10K) make sure to open the Key Advantage account. Higher level accounts will require $100K in the bank for the $300 promo. However, the $25 early termination fee may be well worth doing to avoid the monthly $18 fee after the 3 initial billing cycles.

  16. Foodie says:

I currently live in Portland, OR but will like move to another city soon (in a month or so). Will I still be safe to get the bonus?

  17. Young says:

Closed my Key checking account in August (opened in 2016 for the same $300 offer). How long do I need to wait to get another bonus?

    • First line of the fine print:

Offer is available to clients who do not have or haven’t had a KeyBank Hassle-Free Account® or a KeyBank checking account during the past 12 months

  18. Matt P says:

Applied online for this but eventually had my initial deposit returned because they couldn’t verify my identity. I had recently moved from another part of WA but my new address hadn’t shown up on my credit report yet. They asked for copy of ID, SS card and bill with address. I brought all but SS which I lost a long time ago into the local branch, but apparently that wasn’t good enough. Going to try again for my wife.

  19. Mr. PTM says:

Applied for $300 offer online today, denied (assuming) because of too many Chex inquiries (14 or so this year), however, I did notice the denial said I could still try to open a No-Hassle Checking Account ($100 offer), which I applied and was approved for. $300 would have been cool, but $100 is fine. 🙂

“While we cannot open this account, you may still be eligible to open a KeyBank Hassle-Free Account.”

  20. Elena says:

Applied for $300 offer online, funded with $100 from SouthWest CC (posted from merchant “Keybank Online Funding AC”, transaction type “Sale”). Opened 10 accounts in the last 4 months.

  21. Sully says:

Not sure where else to put this, but got an a targeted email from KeyBank for $5 statement credit offer if I use the debit card 10 times from 10/10/17 to 11/10/17. So check those inboxes!

“Make 10 purchases on your card ending in 7995 between 10/10/17 and 11/10/17 to enjoy a $5 reward.

With convenience, security and rewards, your KeyBank Debit Mastercard does it all – it’s perfect for your everyday purchases instead of using cash or checks, any recurring payments, and you can even add it to your digital wallet for use with your favorite smartphone payment apps. And now, you can enjoy an extra $5 just for using your card.
Receiving your extra $5 couldn’t be easier:
    1. At checkout, choose to pay with your KeyBank Debit Mastercard.
    2. Make 10 purchases that post to your account from 10/10/17 through 11/10/17.
    3. Your $5 statement credit will be added to your checking account by 11/30/17.
This invitation-only offer ends 11/10/17, so start using your card today!

Valid only on purchases (i.e., PIN/SIG Point of Sale, online, Recurring Payments, Digital Wallet) posted to account from 10/10/17 through 11/10/17 11:59 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. ATM withdrawals and purchase returns do not qualify.
Offer valid by invitation only. Offer is non-transferable and cannot be sold. Statement credit will be added to qualifying account by 11/30/17.
    *Conditions and exceptions apply.”

  22. Brady says:

Do you have to actually live in these city limits or how does this work? Is living in Oregon close enough or do I have to live in or near Portland? If near is good, how near is “near”? Haven’t seen any info on the exact areas of offer availability aside from the name of the city. Would rather not go through the process of opening one of these accounts and jumping the hoops only to find out I don’t qualify in the end.

  23. Jake says:

Wouldnt it be okay to just open it, get the 300$ and then close it by opaying the $25 fee vs. 6 months of the $18 monthly fee?

  24. mark says:

Was denied by chex and I haven’t opened crazy number of bank accounts. May no more than 10 in last 2 yrs.

  25. Sexy_kitten7 says:

You forgot to add Maine (ME) to the title.

I was also denied due to chex 🙁 I’m 20/24 for HPs.

    • larry says:

24 HP’s this year? Wowza, you better pull back on the reins for the year!

      • JuicyJosh says:

Pull back? I say keep on going! In my experience more bank don’t care than banks that do. Really, what’s to lose at this point.

      • Sexy_kitten7 says:

No. x/24 means x inquiries in the last 2 years. I have 23 reporting in total.

Unlike credit cards, banks are either chex-sensitive or not. It’s binary. So having 25 HPs isn’t worse than 10 HPs bc you’ll get denied or approved either way depending on the bank.
