[Expired] [NY, In Branch only] First National Bank of Long Island $400/$500 Checking Bonus

Update 2/4/19: Deal has been pulled and is no longer being offered.

Update 2/3/19: Seems to be available at all branches, although some branches are offering $400 instead of $500. Also confirmed soft pull. Looks like it’s also possible to open if you live out of state and go in branch.

Avoiding Fees

Monthly Fees

Free checking account has no monthly fees to worry about

Early Account Termination Fee

Account must be kept open for at least one year

Our Verdict

Seems like a great bonus and worth doing if you live in NY and semi near a branch. Will be interesting to see how strict they are with the direct deposit requirement. I’ve added this to our list of the best bank account bonuses.

Seems like a great bonus if it’s a soft pull to open the account, you should be able to ask in branch before opening. If anybody goes for it then please share your experiences in the comments below.

Big thanks to reader, Gerald who let us know. Learn how to find bonuses and contribute to the site here.

Sees NY only gets excited, but a huge letdown in branch only 🙁

Wonder if it’s just that branch. There are Manhattan and Brooklyn locations.

Just a word of warning that banks that use uChoose Rewards do not give you equivalent value to what they advertise.

I signed up with Ridgewood Bank when they were offering a $200 bonus. $150 for direct deposit and $50 for bill pay, or something like that. The $150 came as a credit to my checking account, but the $50 was 50,000 points for uChoose Rewards gift cards. I was only able to get $35 in gift cards with it.

If the same methodology is used you may end up with only $350 in gift cards. That is still a really good bonus for what should be easy requirements, but nevertheless.

The Uchoose isn’t part of the bonus. It’s available if you opt for the debit card.

The bottom is cut off so we can’t see what the asterisk refers to. I hope it is just associated with the debit card, but it may say $500 equivalent in uChoose Rewards. I hope I’m wrong.

The banker said it’s shoukd be any NYC / 5 borough branch but she was not positive about Long Island. Easiest thing to do is call around the branches and just simply ask.

Can you check if residents of other states qualify if they walk into any of these branches?

I spoke to someone at the downtown NYC branch over the phone and they said it was available at all branches.

The person did not seem that friendly and was giving unclear answers on how long you must keep the account open and whether or not there was a minimum amount for the direct deposit. She did seem to indicate it needs to be recurring, but again, her responses weren’t really clear. I didn’t bother asking about a hard or soft pull as I doubt she would know what that is.

This location is minutes away from work so I will sign up on Monday or Tuesday. I’ll let everyone know any further details then.

I called the Long Island branch and was told that any branch would do. It’s the entire bank. The Manhattan ‘s rep confirmed.

I called college point branch. They confirmed $500 bonus, 50 minimal to open and any amount of DD within 30 business days.

Called a Long Island branch. They said it’s $400 there, but $500 in NYC. No CC funding, cash or check only. Confirmed no monthly fees. Said the account doesn’t need to be used (but noted some fees like using another bank’s ATM or $.70 for POS at a grocery store).

She also said it was no problem that I live in NJ and wanted to open an account.

I don’t feel like testing out whether Venmo, Discover ACH, or Paypal count as direct deposits. I may just switch my DD at work

Oh yeah not taking my chances with that. Especially with no minimum deposit number.

No need to swing by a branch to check whether the $500 bonus is available. Just call the branch you’re interested in. I can confirm that College Point has it (they have it posted in the window) and that the Long Island branch I called (Hewlett) has a $400 bonus. The bottom of the flyer that’s poster here says “Brooklyn/Queens,” so I suspect it’s available at all Brooklyn and Queens branches.

There’s also a $500 business checking bonus. I asked about it (I’m a sole proprietor using my own name and SSN), and was told I’d need to get a business certificate. I looked into this and decided against it.

Word of warning: this bank has something pretty close to banker’s hours. Most branches are open 9:00 to 4:00. Some are only open 10:00 to 3:00!
