This deal is no longer available, view other ways to save on your prime membership here.

The Offer

Targeted offer, no direct link

  • Select American Express cardholders are receiving an AmEx sync offer as follows: Get an additional 5,000 Membership Rewards points one-time by using your enrolled card to spend $99+ on an annual Amazon Prime membership at Amazon.com by 3/2/2018

The Fine Print

  • Valid until 1/31/2018

Our Verdict

So normally there are a few different ways to get discounted Amazon prime:

These obviously won’t work for this promotion as you need to spend $99+. The question then becomes will using any of the three following offers still trigger the 5,000 Membership Rewards? Keep in mind these are for new Amazon prime customers only

My guess is yes, but that is purely just a guess. I’d personally just wait for datapoints to come through to confirm this (or be the datapoint you want to see) in the comments. If they do work then Ibotta would be your best bet, in the end you’d be spending $99 getting an Amazon Prime membership, a $20 gift card and 5,000 Membership Rewards points. If you don’t want to risk it and want to sign up for Amazon prime directly you can do so here (our affiliate link, thanks for supporting the site). If you got the 2,000 Membership Rewards points for spending $50+ at Amazon earlier in the year then you should also be able to stack that offer with this.

I also wonder how well American Express/Amazon have set up this offer and if purchases other than prime would work or not (Update: Amazon Prime shows up as Amazon Prime in the transaction description so won’t work). I’d be very surprised if other purchases over $99 did work, but you never know I guess. I’d strongly recommend reading our full guide to saving money on Amazon if you haven’t already. Gifting Prime membership also doesn’t work.

The weirdest thing: 5k posted to my account yesterday. I didn’t even have this offer on the card my membership went on, it doesn’t show up under “savings”, and my membership renewed on 3/23. Guess I’m lucky since the membership did go to an MR-earning card by coincidence? Never received my AU bonus, so guess I’ll call it a wash.

So like most people, I didn’t get the 5k points from Amex right away with the renewal. But just today my Awardwallet notified me that I got another 5000+ points. I didn’t believe I would get it, but I actually got it back on Feb 22nd. I got in on the offer close to the end and I made two calls to Amex, both of them saying they’d follow up with me but never did. But I’ll take the points…

After I enrolled in the 5000 MR offer, the info at the bottom of the email from Amex confirming that I added the offer states: “Not valid at international sites owned and/or operated by Amazon or websites affiliated with/linked to/from Amazon.com.” so this would explain why you cannot stack the offer with TCB or ibotta. :/

I swear I had this on at least two cards when it first showed up….. now even using the old amex interface i cannot find it. This sound normal for them to remove a offer if I didn’t add it to my offers yet?

I bought Prime om 12/18 thru a popup offer on Shopkick app for $20 Amazon GC with purchase of Prime. I got 2000MR from the spend $50 get 2000MR Amex offer but did not receive the 5000MR. It did not post to my Amex card as Prime but instead as AMAZON MKTPLACE PMTSAMZN.COM/BILL, WA just as kirk noted above when using TCB. I guess I screwed myself out of $30.

actually those 2 would stack! so you’re really missing out on that 5k. if i were you i’d go to chat. just tell them you wanted to take advantage of amex offers and that it didn’t code properly. now you want to make sure that it codes properly that’s why you’re on chat to cancel and rebuy right away. amazon is really that easy to deal with.

i wasn’t aware that Prime gets taxed. Has this always been the case? i’m in California. i don’t recall paying tax before but then again i paid for it only after seeing some kind of deal from SD ie prime day, gift tricks and the likes.

I just bought it after closing 2 days ago as it expired yesterday to stack tcb $15 and amex 5k mr. will update if it works.

==update== TLDR: if you want to make sure it codes properly for amex, do NOT use any cb portal. buy it new or just let it renew.

cancelled my order using tcb as it coded ~
AMAZON MKTPLACE PMTS – AMZN.COM/BILL, WA

bought it without any portal and it coded as ~ AMAZON US PRIME
also got the email right away ~ Great news! You just used your Amex Offer
Thank you for using your American Express® Card ending in xxxxx at AMAZON US PRIME. You will have successfully redeemed the offer if your purchase meets the terms of the offer.

Any idea if I can sign up for a membership and then have it converted to a student one?

Anyone try making a new Amazon account, getting a new prime membership, and then merging accounts via CS?

Wondering if anyone would know the answer to this…

I gifted my sister Amazon Prime in early January 2017. Would it work if I gave her my amex card # to add to her account for the prime renewal? Any possible consequences, like getting our accounts banned? I got a little nervous reading the elliott.org banning stories, but wasn’t sure if those are extremely rare. Thanks for any input on this 🙂
