The Offer

No direct link

  • Get a one time $60 statement credit by using your enrolled card to spend $300+ on room rate and room charges when you pay for your stay with SPG participating properties from 6/15/18 to 9/4/2018

The Fine Print

  • Offer valid only at the following SPG® Hotels and Resorts in the US and US territories: Aloft®, Element®, Four Points® by Sheraton, Le Méridien®, The Luxury Collection®, Sheraton®, St. Regis®, Tribute Portfolioâ„¢, W® Hotels, and Westin®.
  • Reservations must be made online at spg.com, via the SPG® mobile app, or by calling 1-877-782-7966.
  • Excludes Design Hotelsâ„¢, all Marriott brand hotel properties, residences, Vistana Vacation, and all timeshares.
  • Not valid for online retail store purchases. Offer only valid on room rate and room charges.
  • Offer not valid for lodging stays that are paid for before the promotion start date or after the promotion end date.

Our Verdict

Works out to be a 20% discount if you spend $300 exactly. Even if your stay is after 9/4/2018 you should be able to call in and prepay before that date and get the promo to trigger that way. Don’t forget to stack it with this SPG promo as well.

Anyone know if, since the programs have merged, that you can buy a Marriott gift card at an SPG hotel and have this trigger the offer?

I have the same question. May be a non issue – my local SPG properties do not yet have Marriott gift cards and the promo deadline is one week away.

Does anyone know if resort fees would qualify for the credit? Room will be paid using points. Heading to a Westin resort in a few weeks. Thanks!

Have we confirmed that this doesn’t work internationally?

I can confirm. Did not work with a recent stay at Sheraton in Canada.

Aren’t SPG hotels combining with Marriott on Aug 1st? (Or is that just the rewards programs?) If so, might this AMEX promo then apply to Marriott stays as well (yes, I know what the terms of the offer say).

If I have a ~$650 room charge, and I put $300 on my Amex card with this offer and $350 on my new Marriott card which I’m working on an MSR for, I should still get the Amex offer, right? I don’t see anything in the fine print saying that the full bill has to be put on the Amex card. My only concern is that a partial bill payment will be coded differently and not count.

Curious if anyone has DPs here.

surprised u had never split payment amex before for charges. but u just got a new marriott card which probably means ur new. so welcome to the game. split payments is done more often than you wipe your ass with toilet paper. yes it works. no its not coded differently. i have used 12 different amex CC to pay for one stay. all split payments.

Nope, not new at all, just have a reluctant P2 who conveniently dipped below 5/24 when the new Marriott card came out 🙂

I’ve never stayed at an SPG resort while having an Amex offer for it and a reason to use another card as well, so this has never come up for me. I know that the MCC code will be the same, that’s not what I meant by “coded differently”. What I meant was that the Amex offer has extra rules (“only room rate and room charges”), so assuming Amex actually tries to enforce that, presumably SPG is sending them extra data about what the charge is for. And it is possible that when paying a bill in full it gets processed in one way but when paying a partial bill it gets processed as a generic charge or something which doesn’t count. I agree it is unlikely, but wanted to double-check. Thanks for your explanation, glad to confirm that it should work!

The terms don’t say that you have to spend $300 in a single transaction so can we assume that multiple transactions will trigger this?

If you charge a meal at the hotel restaurant to your room, does that count too?

for hotels, its always multiple charges. same with airline offers. one or more eligible transactions. amex promos would never expect one time charge of a certain amount for hotel and flights rates. it just wouldnt make sense. yes, food counts when billed to room.

this should work on prepaid rates, correct?

usually. even when terms say it doesnt count, it has worked so far for hotels. just be careful and keep watch.

Would buying SPG points trigger the offer?

no. those are from Points.com. everyone would be all over that shit if it did. but using SPG card gives you 2x.

US and US territories. Hmm. They’re so much more expensive here compared to other countries.
