Update 5/19/19: Deal is back and valid until June 30th, 2019. Maximum bonus is now 75,000 American Airline miles instead of 60,000. Hat tip to @jtgtix

Update 2/21/19: Deal is back and valid until March 31st, 2019. Seems like a unique code is no longer required, but fine print does say you need to have received direct communication from Citi regarding the offer. Hat tip to reader @vinceted

The Offer

Direct link to offer (requires unique code)

  • Citi has sent out an offer for up to 75,000 American Airline miles when you open a new new regular checking account. The bonus you receive depends on what account package you open:
    • 60,000 miles bonus. Open a Citigold Account Package and make $1,200 in debit card purchases and pay one or more bills for two consecutive months
    • 50,000 miles bonus. Open a Citi Priority Account Package and make $1,000 in debit card purchases and pay one or more bills for two consecutive months
    • 30,000 miles bonus. Open a Citibank Account Package and make $600 in debit card purchases and pay one or more bills for two consecutive months
    • 5,000 miles bonus. Open a Citi Priority Account Package and make $250 in debit card purchases and pay one or more bills for two consecutive months

The Fine Print

  • Valid until December 31st, 2017 March 31st, 2018
  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

Citigold Account Package (60,000 mileBonus)

This account has no monthly fee but you need an average monthly balance of $200,000 to be eligible.

Citi Priority Account Package $30 Monthly Fee (50,000 mile bonus)

  • The Citi Account Package has a monthly fee of $30, this is waived if you maintain a combined average monthly balance of $50,000 or more in eligible linked deposits, retirement and investment balances. There is no early account termination fee for this account.

Citi Account Package $25 Monthly Fee (30,000 mile Bonus)

  • The Citibank Account Package needs $10,000 in combined average monthly balances to remain fee free. Otherwise, there is a $25 monthly fee.

Early Termination Fee

In the past, Citi has not charged any ETF, and none is mentioned for this offer.

Our Verdict

Currently the public bonus is $400 or $600 and that matches up with the 30,000/50,000 mile offers here. You’d need to value American Airline miles above 1¢ per mile (1.33¢ per mile for the 30,000/$300 mile deal or 1.2¢ per mile for the 50,000/$600 deal) for this milage offer to be better. The advantage of the cash offer is that there is also no debit card spend requirement either.

Keep in mind the Citigold & Priority account packages also reduce the annual fee on the Prestige by $100. I think the sweet spot is the 30,000 mile bonus as it’s easier to keep the account fee free, but if you’re willing to just pay the monthly fees then you’d be better offer with the 50,000 mile bonus. Keep in mind Citi is notorious when it comes to slowly posting bonuses. Because it’s targeted I won’t be adding it to the best bonus list. Recently they haven’t been sending out 1099-INT forms for these mile bonuses, but no guarantees that will happen here.

Hey Doc,

I got the mailer. This is a new brainer citi priority move, isnt it??

Unless you have 10k sitting around or the new account bandwith to better spend tha $375 spend difference between the ackconts, i think the citi prjority offers much better value, 20k miles more miles for about $400 spend eat the fees for a couple months and 5/6 of the way to lie flat to Japan…giddy up!!

Nothing in the mail. Are they targeting people with an existing banking relationship or AA card holders with no banking relationship? Any ideas?

Ron
Ron

Most likely its the latter group they are targeting as existing banking relationship makes you ineligible for the offer.

I got targeted and I only have AA card. I was able to see this offer after logging into my AA card.

Thanks! Will keep an eye out for a flyer, hope they target us. I just hit the 9 month mark on the Fidelity brokerage account so I can cancel that now and move my 50k to this.

seems the 5,000 bonus miles one is for the Basic Banking, not Citi Priority

Ben
Ben

I got this offer except with TYP not AA miles.

Manny
Manny

Got this mailer but also for Thankyou points. I do have a citi thankyou CC

Brian
Brian

Same. Everything is exactly the same, but instead of miles it’s TY Points.

I’m an existing Citigold customer with checking savings and brokerage account, can I get this offer or is it for new customers only?

Sonia
Sonia

Does citi tax these AA miles?

Sonia
Sonia

Also, do these AA miles expire or does have the same expiration as my AA miles earned through credit card spending?

Fine print says: “”WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR THE CITI / AADVANTAGE® MILES OFFER?
For Citibank’s Cards to Checking Offer (R2C) (“Citi / AAdvantage® Offer”), “Eligible Customers” are (1) New-to-Citibank Customers..”

I did the Citigold version of this deal when it came around a year or two ago (the one where people were having trouble with the bonus posting). Am I ineligible for this Citi Priority deal?

Matt
Matt

**ps- I received a targeted mailer. Not sure why they would send it to me if i wasn’t eligible, but it sounds like i’m not…?**

Hey everyone – I was successful in signing up for the 30k offer by simply calling in and mentioning that I received something in the mail. In about 20 min I was signed up, and the terms matched up to the ones listed here.

Bob
Bob

Lets say, If there are early termination fee, how much would it be. I got the mailer for 50K TY points but I don’t wanna sign up if the termination fee will bite me

Elliot

Hey Will, any idea if Citi charges the monthly fee the first few months/when they start charging it? Thanks!

I got the same offer terms yesterday but for TYP and my SO got it for AA miles

nate

Check the terms. If you close your AA credit card or TY credit card (premier & prestige) you won’t get the bonus. Both the checking and credit card account need to be in good standing.

Nicky L.
Nicky L.

Have both the AA and Prestige card, no prior banking relationship with Citibank and was left out from both rounds of targeted offers.. dang.

William Charles I have a peculiar situation. I opened a priority account and have met all requirements. I did not pay attention and closed my AA credit card. Do you have any DP point on if Citi actually denies the AA points in this case? Should I try to reinstate the account. Do you know if that would reset my 24 moths clock for AA cards? thanks much.

Nate
Nate

This is what happened to me; I opened a new AA card mid January and got the AA bonus from the checking account on February 13.
I don’t know if I would’ve gotten the miles without having an active AA credit card (in fact I didn’t expect the miles as I didn’t meet the requirements).
To summarize, I opened a checking account mid November, met requirements {except having an AA card} Beginning of December, opened AA card mid January, and got miles mid February.

Calvin

Received the mailer with same requirement and receive cash bonus instead. I have Citi DC with them.

I received this mailer today for TY points. I recently opened a Premier card which is my first Citi account of any kind.
