The Offer

No direct link, requires a targeted mailer

  • TCF Bank is offering a bonus of $300 when you complete the following requirements:
    • Bring mailer in
    • Open a TCF Premier Checking account
    • Do one of the following within 60 days of account opening :
      • Receive direct deposits totaling $500 or more
      • Enroll in TCF digital banking and make $250 in online bill payments within 60 days of account opening

The Fine Print

  • MN, MI, IL, WI, CO & SD only.
  • Bonus will post to your account the business day following the criteria verification
  • One offer per household
  • Not eligible to current TCF customers or those who have closed an account in the last 12 months.
  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

This account has a $15 monthly fee, this is waived if you have a balance of $2,500+. There is a $2 fee if you receive paper statements. According to this fee schedule there is no early account termination fee.

Our Verdict

Sadly last time they offered a similar bonus they actually required you to bring in the mailer. Previous times it has been possible to just call in and request it but unfortunately it seems like those days are now over. Previous deals only required the free checking account, this requires the premier checking account. Big thanks to all the readers who sent this in.

You can fund via CC if you were to not open it in branch. He’s saying how to fund in general for this bank, not with this offer

I think it’s out of date because I opened an account 6 months ago online and the max I could fund was $100. Unless this “open via phone and get a subsequent email to fund your account” has a different limit, but I doubt it.

I signed up for this last week over the phone and they let me fund $1000 with my credit card.

Post has an error where you can’t have an account closed within last 90 days. Its actually last 12 months.

I got the first round of the $250 TCF Bonus just by calling in. I think those days are long gone. Many smaller banks are waking up to this and are making it much harder.

My mailer offer was only for a $250 bonus with the same requirements mentioned in the article.

My friend got the mailer for $250, I went in branch said that we were roomates and was able to put a different address on the account (said we were moving) and use the offer.

3 days later did a venmo transfer for $501

Bonus posted 48 hours later

Plan on closing the account this weekend

Is it safe to close the account that quickly? What is your general rule of thumb?

Targeted with Direct Mailer for $300
8/23 (Thr): Opened via phone and funded with Capital One 360 Debit MasterCard for $500
8/27 (Tue): $500 clears from Cap1 360
8/28 (Wed): $300 Bonus posts

DP- received flyer in the mail, live 5 minutes from an in-grocery branch.

9/18- opened account over the phone, funded $1,000 with BofA premium rewards visa (coded as purchase, not cash advance).
9/20- transferred $501 from Alliant CU.
9/21- deposit from Alliant cleared
9/21- received $300 bonus

By far the easiest bank bonus I’ve ever done. $300 plus $26.75 in cash back for ~20 minutes on the phone.

DP – Received fly in mail
10/8 – opened account (at a branch)
10/12 – Made a transfer from my Ally Savings account
10/15 – Received bonus

Also, initially I tried to open an account my phone and fund using my Citi AA biz with cash advance set to $0. This did NOT work and the card was rejected. I ended up going into a branch to sign up for the account.

How quickly have others closed the account after receiving the bonus?

This is an old post, but they are still periodically mailing out the flyers so on the off chance you get one please note they are extremely aggressive with fees. We made a small initial deposit and immediately set up a transfer in for enough to cover the minimum balance requirement plus some cushion. which the banker told us was fine. This settled less than a week after opening the account. Two weeks later, $15 monthly fee and no apparent way to protest without calling in or talking to someone in a branch. I’m sure they’ll waive it if we complain, but so annoying. Most other banks will waive fees for a month or two. We will be closing ASAP after the bonus posts.
