Our Verdict

Last time these were sent out it was possible to get the deal by calling in even if you didn’t have a mailer. This was then shut down, I suspect you will need to bring the physical mailer in to get this deal but if anybody tries calling in or going in without a mailer let us know in the comments below.

Big thanks to reader, Norm who let us know. Learn how to find bonuses and contribute to the site here.

I opened a TCF checking account earlier this year online and the CC funding maximum had been reduced to 100. Where’s the DP about this “send via email to fund 1,000”? It’s not in the link to that portion of the summary.

And what does it even mean, to be sent an email to apply with a mailer you have to bring in branch?

Warning- they enforce the rule and having the physical flyer very, very firmly.

I did this last year. Closed my account this Spring. I just got a flyer for this current offer. Mine says can have an account in the past 12 months. Do so,e flyers say 90 days?

My flyer had the same language. It says $500 direct deposit OR minimum $deposit With $250 in billpay.

I was able to open account over phone with a rep who then guided me to complete application online. Had to call back because Passcode rep gave me didn’t work until he tried it. (?) Only allowed $100 funding through a card
. And took several days for it to clear. (Meanwhile- my bank showed tcfs immediate Double Withdrawal- second withdrawal cancelled once I called tcf and said I only did one deposit.)

The personal check I wrote myself is so far taking a whopping 13 days for TCF to approve. Reason stated as No previous relationship with tcf. I think if I deposited cash they might actually put a hold on even THAT because TCF has the worst record of messing with that thing to earn fees off people . We will see how long it takes for the $250 bill pay to go through. I have 47 days left to do one billpay transactions that should be able to be completed in one afternoon. Will be the DO I want to see !

TCF is in my state but a couple of hours away. Last year I tried to open a checking account with them over the phone, not even for a bonus, and they shot me down after they got my address. Was going along fine and then hit a brick wall after they got my city and zip code.

If anyone has a mailer they don’t want, I’ll take it.

Last time they enforced matching the name and address.

I did tho one in branch yesterday with physical flyer. Flyer had name of a previous resident, but they down care about that (it even said “or current resident”. I imagine it’s highly dependent on to much the employee cares.

TCF's horrible customer service
TCF's horrible customer service

TCF bank has, in my experience, truly horrible customer service. One of their agents gave me inaccurate information, resulting in my account becoming overdrawn (to my recollection) a small amount. They charged me hundreds of dollars of fees as a result and they refused to refund the vast majority of them, even after I went to their higher-ups. I have had bank accounts with many banks and TCF is some of the worst. I would stay far, far away from TCF.

You’re right, it’s terrible.
One time I made a deposit and they wanted me to enter my PIN. Then they put it into the wrong account.
Fortunately I noticed it before walking away, but I was told “You have the same PIN as the other person’s account”

Yeah. I’m obviously dumb enough to believe that….. I try and stay away from them as much as possible.

Oh. And they wouldn’t let me take my money out of one of my accounts, because ‘the account was set up for a minor.
But we’re going to charge you a monthly fee because you’re not a minor. But we still won’t let you take your money out. So have fun while we slowly drain your account, and you can do nothing about it!’
Man, I would love to take them for a $250 ride…
If anybody else is thinking about it, I would strongly encourage you to do it.

Enrolled through telephone and needed to complete application online. Called back to confirm code was attached to my application. Initial banker did not properly attach the bonus. Good thing I double checked ! Took a while for deposit to clear but I sent out a bill payment of $275 with TCF online bill pay to a cc. Took one day to post. Day after transaction cleared, the bonus $250 appeared in account. Disabled paper statements in the account to be fee free .

Could be the worst bank in the Midwest; nobody that’s employed there has the slightest clue.

I just received this mailer (I think) and it is now $300 when you open a new tcf premier checking account.

Got a mailer on 8/13 for this bonus above, with $500 in direct deposit OR $250 in bill pay earns $250.

Ryan

FYI- TCF does not enforce the 12 month rule.

Opened checking about 11 months after the last account was closed and still got my $300 bonus.

Sam

Hum… Did you open both in branch? When I did this in 2017, the banker saw I had a really (10+ years?) old account and didn’t think I qualified as “new”. Read the fine print and they let me go and I got the bonus.

I close my last account 3/25/18. Of course I got a flyer last week…

In branch. Looked for a young teller.

I got this in the mail today, in MN

With the mailer I received, the requirement is a $500 DD OR $250 in online bill pay, not $500.

If anyone has a code that isn’t unique and is willing to share that would be great. I would like to try over the phone again. Last time it was a generic code.

The code is JDT250. Let me know if it works.

Thanks. I’ll try Monday morning and report back.

I called this morning and it was a firm no; she said the mailer has to be “reviewed” by a branch. I waited on hold for 15 minutes before anyone picked up.

Charles Mann

That’s normal for their “cust serv”. As I said earlier; anyone that bites on this deal will earn every penny, mostly through aggravation.

JR

The bill pay requirement this time is only $250 per the mailer I received.
