The Fine Print

  • To receive the $250 bonus, customer must make at least one deposit of $250 or more for each of the first four consecutive calendar months following the month in which the account is opened. Calendar months do not necessarily coincide with statement cycles. Two or more separate deposits in a single month that add up to $250 do not qualify. • Bonus will be credited to the open checking account by 10/31/2019.
  • Offer does not apply to second or multiple checking accounts. Bank will classify the bonus as interest paid to the checking account. Any applicable taxes associated with this offer are the responsibility of the account holder. To the extent required by law, Bank will report total value of the offer to the IRS on Form 1099 for tax year 2019. All accounts are subject to the Bank’s standard terms and conditions and Schedule of Fees and Charges
  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

Monthly Fees

The any deposit checking account has a $10 monthly fee. This is waived if you qualify for one of the following:

  • Choose any deposit method (mobile, ATM, in-branch, or direct) and make a deposit of any amount each statement cycle
  • If any account holder is under 25 years of age

They also charge a $3 paper statement fee, so make sure you have paperless statements set up.

Early Account Termination Fee

There is an early account termination fee of $25 if your account is closed within 91 days of account opening.

Our Verdict

In my opinion this is the best bonus they have ever offered. Most recently they offered a bonus of $150 that required a direct deposit and the same any deposit checking account or a $300 bonus that required an account that is much more difficult to keep fee free and required $25,000 in funds to trigger the bonus. This bonus has no direct deposit or fund requirement and is much easier to keep fee free. This is a really great offer and if you’re eligible I’d strongly recommend doing this offer. I’ll be adding this to our list of the best checking account bonuses.

Drooling over this but I’m in Texas. After entering zip, application doesn’t load. 🙁 Anybody try the M&T Bank approach with this one?

LC

yeah not worth it. everything is super hard coded.

I entered the zipcode of my old addy in CA but then when form loaded to enter personal info, the zipcode CANNOT be changed to my current zip :/

this bank is a tease. they either wont approve you due to a multitude of reasons (very chex sensitive) , will approve you but then not pay out the bonus due to one per mailing address, debit card transactions too early / wrong month.

didnt enjoy banking with them at all and i told myself wont sign up again regardless of the offer. This falls under the too good to be true type of bank…

I had pretty bad experience in 2017 too with similar stuff you mentioned.

But I’ll give them another chance now that I’m eligble again:
Much like churning Citi, I never learn and think THIS time it will work smoothly… 😉

Ha, I actually closed down my account last night. It was definitely one I didn’t feel bad about closing. I was more than happy to tell them the reason: their branches are never open on the way to/from work, or on the weekend. I was losing $$ due to not being able to make a deposit!
And I just missed out on the $50 debit card bonus. But that one was on me.
If they have a ‘good’ offer like this when I become eligible, I’ll try and redeem myself.

They closed my account a couple of weeks before the timeline finished for the last bonus to pay out. They cited account closure due to chex inquires. Even though I had the account open for about 4 months. I filed a CFPB, told them to shove it and then they cut me a check. They suck, and if they screw you over make sure to file that CFPB. It should go in your favor.

First time got denied by opening a checking account. I have no problem what-so-ever with all other banks except this one. Just received the denial email today. Disappointed.

yep sure enough 2/2 denied. lol

I had no problem circumventing their Chex-system sensitivity and receiving the bonus late last year. I applied in-branch. I wonder if this helped. Anyone else have a similar experience?

JT

So can you confirm that you did not get a Chex pull while in branch?

JohnnyBoyJr
JohnnyBoyJr

I think it helps. I applied in branch last year and my Chex was starting to get iffy. Approved no problem.
I’ve only been denied by a bank once and that was in branch. I was traveling and it wasn’t available online to non-residents, and it was a nice $300 bonus. I had a bad feeling pretty early on as the CSR kept running back to their boss’ office multiple times…

Radster

I havent pulled my Chex report, so unfortunately I cant confirm.

LC

in branch bypasses a typical chex system denial because they can verify you in person.

Once again answering to you, since this was exactly the info I opened the thread for. thanks…

Doesn’t always work IME. I opened in-branch last year, everything went great. 2 weeks later my account was closed. Upon calling they said it was due to chexsystems.

Is CC funding allowed in branch? If so, any DPs on whether it codes as purchase or cash advance?

Jay
Jay

From my experience couple years ago, BotW does not let you open account in branch with CC funding.

Lc

No

Hi
Hi

I went in branch today and they did not open an account for me due to Chexsystems. I have 3 accounts on my Chexsystems history for this year, 6 for 2018 and 1 for 2017. Seems like they went back 3 years.

Also note that external transfers via online banking have a $3/ea charge per their fee schedule.

Maisel

Is this only for user-initiated transfers directly from the Bank of the West site? What about debits from other things like Venmo or Paypal?

calwatch

Only for user initiated debits, I use Ally and Chase as hubs to drain the money away.

calwatch As in you initiate transfers from Chase and Ally pulling funds from Bank of the West?

Approved. Funded $500 with Visa, charge pending, but received an email saying my account is being reviewed. 3-5 business days to review.

What institution is the Visa from?

Barclay

Bah Humbug!
I tried using my Barclay Arrival + and it kept saying “Try Again, there was a problem” or something similar.

Anthony posted “No issues with verification, they denied my CSR for funding 3x before it went through” so I kept trying, then it told me I’d reached the max amount of attempts and no longer could do a cc funding.

The card had its Cash Advance limit lowered to zero.

And got the “Your account is being reviewed” message when I finished the application.

Confirming that it coded as purchase 🙂

Denied due to chex, anyone apply in branch successfully after online denial?

Wondering this too, same thing happened to me. There’s a branch about 5 minutes away from me.

Yep 2 years ago

Was approved instantly a few minutes ago and previously denied many times.

Miles4Matt

Thanks for posting! This one seemed like a no brainer given how easy the requirement are. Just signed up and funded $500 with my Chase Hyatt card.

Paul
Paul

Does it show as cash advance or as a normal payment transaction?

Did you apply online or in-branch?

Anthony
Anthony

Approved. I’ve opened about 5 accounts in the last 6 months. No issues with verification, they denied my CSR for funding 3x before it went through. Will likely just use a $250 DD to hit the requirements. Easy $250, just payed for the car parts I bought!

re: funding denied. Was this a fraud alert from Chase or an issue with BotW app? Did you redo app multiple times or just a ‘retry’ on the funding? Thx.

Looks like a great offer, but unfortunately got a bonus from them after 10/17 which makes me and my address ineligible maybe next time around!

Aww bummer, I just signed up for their $150 bank bonus last week! Anyone know if they will match to this $250 bonus?

How long do you have to wait after being denied online to go into a branch and apply?

I did it next day

Let us know please if they close your account in a couple weeks like that other guy who got denied online and then signed up in branch!

Yes

So an external transfer of $250 is fine? Doesn’t have to be a direct deposit?

I’d also like to know this, but may just deposit a check via their app.
