Last month we decided to start doing a ‘best comments of <month>’ and awarding comments that were selected with a $10 Amazon gift card. The aim of this is to help point out useful comments for people that might have missed them and also to reward readers that provide helpful comments.
The hope is that this will make the comments section more useful with readers trying to provide datapoints and helping each other. One of the things I like about this site and something I want to foster is that sense of community and helping each other out. Now onto this months comments.
Credit Cards
- Reader JC educating me on credit card portals & Cardlytics. I love when readers that are knowledgeable about certain subjects share information like this, when I was writing that post I knew it wasn’t very good and largely incomplete so it’s great when a reader can come along with lots of useful information to add.
- Reader Squid23 let us know that they cancelled their Avianca credit card, got the annual fee refunded but then the sign up bonus of 60,000 miles was clawed back 5 days later. Very useful to have this data points shared so you can learn from others’ mistakes.
Bank Account Bonuses
- Gadget sharing their opening experience with First Bank. Very detailed comment including credit card funding maximum and also possible mileage restriction.
- MarcoPolo reminding people to opt out of paper statements with Santander. Santander is a bit tricky in that the option is greyed out when signing up. Because of this comment we were able to add a word of warning.
- Steve Smith letting people know that the Old Missouri Bank 3.01% APY Rewards Checking Account On Balances Up To $25,000 account is available in Arkansas as well as Missouri. There is just no way I have of seeing updates to these sorts of things, so I really rely on readers letting me know.
- TJ giving a short comment loaded with information. This is everything we needed to know and it was nice & short, couldn’t ask for anything more.
- Matt letting us know that the Capital One 360 $200 Money Market bonus just needed cumulative deposits of $10,000, not $10,000 at once or $10,000 in the account at one time. Lots of readers asked about this and Matt took the risk and provided the answer!
Misc
- Brad reminding people with Costco memberships that if their membership is expiring between June through August they can renew online early and save $5.
- MontyFC letting us know that he was able to get the Alaska 5,000 mile bonus added retroactively to his account. People always ask questions about if you can get a bonus if you recently applied for an account without a bonus regardless of the promotion, instead of asking just try it and then let everybody else know how you went.
Final Thoughts
If you’re one of the above comments, check your e-mails (in the coming week or so) and I’ll be in touch with your gift of a $10 Amazon gift card. In addition readers feel free to vote for your favorite comment below (can be one of the ones listed or just another random comment on the site) and I’ll pick the most popular one to win an additional gift (if somebody else has already mentioned it, you can just reply to their comment with +1).
If people have other ideas on how we can build a better community, let us know in the comments below.
