The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • Hilton is offering a 100% bonus when you purchase 40,000 or 80,000 points. Prices are as follows:
    • 40,000 points + 40,000 bonus points for $400
    • 80,000 points + 80,000 bonus points for $800

The Fine Print

  • Valid until September 20th, 2018

Our Verdict

You should be able to go through Topcashback for another 2.5% cash back. Chase Ink Preferred also codes Points.com as a 3x category. Personally I don’t think purchasing points makes much sense, Hilton cards are all offering all time high bonuses at the moment:

If you’ve already hit all of those bonuses and don’t have any Hilton points left and have a very specific redemption in mind, then I guess this sale could make sense but I wouldn’t be purchasing any speculative points.

By the way Doc, the offer has ended early. Tried purchasing tonight, but the system said “Our bonus points packages have sold out!”

I value Hilton points at 0.8 because of the 5th night free and even as high as 1.0 if you count the free breakfast buffet for Gold members.

Quick example: Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki beach resort 5 nights Nov 15-20 is 240K or $1,800 for the cheapest room at member rate (before resort fees) that’s a minimum of 0.7 and I have redeemed at resorts where it was 1.0 to 1.5 comparing to the high season cash price.
That being said I wouldn’t advice to buy just to stock up even at 0.5 but when you redeem them go for the 5th night free to get top value.

I actually have my own 5 day stay at Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Resort coming up next June. 2 rooms, one is paid with 240k points for 5 nights. The other room, my wife and I split the room 2nt on her Amex Hilton Aspire and 3nt on my Amex Hilton Aspire. This gives us $500 off that 2nd room ($250 resort credit x 2 Aspire cards). If we do the math on what we ended up paying, the 2nd room cost is 0.0022… substantially less than 0.005. However, that’s a very specific scenario due to the resort credits. After factoring in the $250 air credit, we’re $50 ahead on both of our Aspire cards, and that’s before using the weekend night free certs (and all the room upgrades we’ve received for being Diamond members thanks to the Aspire).

If you’re going to be loyal to Hilton, the Aspire is the best card to have, hands down.

Do people actually stay in one hotel for 5 nights?

Can’t remember the last time I’ve stayed put on a vacation.

Most people who go to a nice resort especially in places like Cancun/Aruba stay the entire time in the resort enjoying the beach etc.

I’m a digital nomad who flits from hotel to hotel. I regularly stay 4-7 nights at one hotel.

Right, same hotel is so much more relaxing, hate packing and unpacking, lol.

Even though you gotta pack, at least you get to see the world. I was just in Alaska and didn’t stay in one hotel/city for more than 3 nights at a time.

Agree with the others, I generally average about .4 cents per point. Not worth buying.

the day after the sale hilton points will probably be devalued

If you can transfer these to Virgin flying club at 3:2 ratio I think there could be some value if you have a redemption in mind at getting VS for under 1cpp

The .5CPP is also misleading as the $800, if spent at hilton rather than points, would be earning points as well

The past year, I’ve averaged around 0.45 CPP when I found something that was a good value. However, if I didn’t find a good deal, I either booked through IHG or Hotels.com.

If you have a stay that’s 5 nights it would increase those valuations 😉

While its not an amazing value, if you’re close to hitting an award stay threshold it could be worth it, especially considering the free 5th night on award stays. If I was looking at an 80,000 point a night redemption and I needed 80k to hit the 4th night, you’re getting 160k of value for $400 which is .25 CPP which is a very good deal

Such a bad deal. Hilton points are rarely usable for anything over .5CPP. As you mentioned only worth it if you have a specific redemption and need to top up.

To be fair, this sale seems much closer to “fair value” than most point sales.

I haven’t purchased points before, but I agree and with the added cash back bonus it seems like a decent deal if you can float the cash & intend to stay at a Hilton property in the near/ish future!

If the purchase also qualifies to MSR in general, this seems like it would be an easy move to justify, though I feel like purchasing points may not qualify (at least for AMEX), but maybe someone will correct me :p

I’d completely agree with you, in general points “sales” are not worth buying. Though, with most other points currencies you can potentially have big upside if you redeem the efficiently (first/biz class awards, sweet spots on hotel award charts, etc). Rarely does an opportunity come around to use Hilton points above .5 CPP. I have plenty of HH points in my account and every time I have a travel need I use another currency since redemption rates for Hilton are almost always ~.4CPP.

Places like WA beverly hill, conrad koh samui and conrad bora bora are the “first class awards” of Hilton. I have completed trips with these properties where Hilton points value exceed 1.5 cpp.

It’s all about how one uses the points. Hilton might have a more limited upscale overall speaking, but there are several great options.
