[Note that M&T Bank is one of the few banks that doesn’t give you a grace period, the requirements mentioned below must be completed your first month to keep it fee-free.]

EZChoice Checking

This account has a monthly fee of $9.95, soon changing to $6.95.

  • Monthly fee is waived by making just ONE transaction such as a deposit, withdrawal, or debit purchase.

MyChoice Checking

This account has a monthly fee of $6.95 that can be waived with any of the following methods:

  • Receive direct deposits totaling $200 or more
  • Make 10 or more monthly debit card purchases
  • Keep an average daily balance of $500 (might be $1,500 depending on your area) or more

Basic Banking

This account has a non-waivable $3 monthly fee.

Early Account Termination Fee

Update: Looks to be $50 now.

Our Verdict

This is the same bonus as this from M&T Bank, the only difference is the promo code. This is technically a targeted offer but in the past this has not been enforced at all. M&T Bank bonuses are churnable and there is quite a few currently available:

We will be adding this bonus to our best of list if/when somebody confirms they successfully got this bonus without being targeted. Update: Confirmed.

Big thanks to reader, Michael who let us know. Learn how to find bonuses and contribute to the site here.

  1. Justin says:

Omg M&T the gift that keeps on giving!! Will happily be your DP, Doc

  2. Tony says:

Can you get another one of these bonuses if you did this last year?

  3. Marco says:

Does M&T Bank just enjoy giving away money? I don’t get it. I’m opening my 5th bank account with them right now. I can’t wait to close a few of these.

  4. Michael says:

As I mentioned in my comment on the other $200 deal post, both my wife and I received this bonus even though technically we weren’t targeted (the mailer came to our address but made out to the person who lived there before us). Both Venmo and Discover Savings triggered bonus (posted on the same day as the transfers cleared).

  5. Frito Pendejo says:

Damn I was only able to open accounts for the 150 and 200, got “account cannot be opened online, please call customer service” type error when I tried for the 250. I guess I’ll wait a week and try again.

    • Ken says:

      Haha, nice username 😉

      • Frito Pendejo says:

I retried this QL code today, over a week later, and it worked! Not sure if I had too many accounts opened at once (2 already that day from MT), or perhaps I messed up the chex questions last time.

  6. Neil says:

Has anyone been able to do an M&T Bonus while living out of state using a relatives address in one of the qualifying states?

  7. Mark says:

Is it possible to open more than one of the same account type with M&T and get the bonus?

I.E. I used the QL code to open an EZ Choice 2 months ago. Could I open a second EZ choice with the new code and qualify for the bonus or do I have to wait until I close out the previous account to qualify?

  8. Dave C says:

Doc, opened last week with QK. Live in LA and have FL license (here temporarily for work, all legit). Should I expect an issue getting the $200? It allowed me to open it and everything.
    Thanks

  9. Sal says:

Anybody know if this works for in-branch without been targeted?

  10. mike says:

I just opened account and now i’m wondering if promo code is applied or not… It doesn’t say 🙁

  11. Sean says:

I wonder how many M&T checking accounts I can have concurrently while flying under the radar. I already have a couple.

    • Dan says:

I have 5 open and just finished opening a 6th and have gotten bonuses on all of them so far and no issues so far.

      • Eric says:

Did you use a different promo code for all 6 accounts?

      • Ken says:

How long have you waited between opening accounts and are they all the EZ checking accounts?

        • Dan says:

All but one were EZ – I did one MyChoice for the $250 promo though I plan on closing that soon and just taking the $50 early closing fee as a cost of the bonus vs moving a pile of cash there to keep it fee free. I would open them as soon as I saw the promo’s post seeing as I wanted to be my own dp.

          • Ken says:

Ok, so not all on the same day?

          • Patti says:

Dan, Did you close this account already? I just read this comment and wanted to let you know we also did the $250 bonus and had no problem downgrading it to EZ checking soon after the bonus posted. Just made the request by SM.
Just saying in case you don’t really feel like paying the $50 to close it early

  12. NBG says:

Opened my 3rd one one today. Bonus for first one posted today (less than a week since opening).
All were discover checking $100 push.

  13. sara says:

Can I open all 5 offers at once?
If not how far do I need to space them?

  14. TD says:

Went to open just now, told me they could not process my information online and that I should call 🙁

  15. Lin says:

Is QM still a valid promotion code?

  16. V says:

Trying to open my 4th MT bank since December, and wife’s 3rd. The previous ones were approved immediately – both of these are pending and only got a confirmation number. Any thoughts as to why? Have I hit a limit with them?

    • John says:

The same thing happened to me as well. Luckily the account appeared in online banking in 2 business days and the opening deposit was deducted from my personal checking account today. Not sure why it was opened instantly. Hoping to get the bonus again. Thanks DoC!

  17. Justin says:

This is my 4th bonus in 7 months and it posted yesterday after a $100 Discover push. Awesome.

  18. NBG says:

Can confirm that opening more than 1 account using different promo codes at the same time works. I just got the bonus on all 3 of them i opened.

  19. andrew says:

Hi guys, do you know a way to find out your account number online before you get your first statement? I forgot to take a screenshot of the confirmation page like I’ve done on my previous accounts.

    Thanks!

  20. Ken says:

Discover Checking ACH triggered $200 bonus.

  21. MarcoPolo says:

I am not seeing MyChoice Checking. The only options are:
    EZChoice Checking
    MyChoice Plus Checking
    MyChoice Premium Checking
    Basic Banking &

    M&T Classic Checking With Interest:
Have at least 1 direct deposit to your M&T Classic Checking with Interest account
    OR
Keep an average daily balance of $500 or more in the account per monthly service charge cycle
    OR
Make 10 or more debit card purchases or payments
    OR
Keep combined balances of $1,500 or more in eligible personal deposit accounts

    • Bob says:

“MyChoice Premium Checking” is the “MyChoice” that we’re talking about

      • MarcoPolo says:

        @Bob
        I don’t think so.
According to M&T website and various M&T deal posts there is one post which mentions $250 bonus for opening MyChoice Premium Checking which has requirements of average daily balance of $7500 with $24.95 per month fee waived.
But if you read above MyChoice Checking has $6.95 monthy fee which can be waived with direct deposits totaling $200 or more/10 or more monthly debit card purchases/ average daily balance of $500.
So they are obviously not the same thing.
The closest to MyChoice Checking (as above) I can find is M&T Classic Checking With Interest account.

  22. Bob says:

So many M&T pages, don’t know where to leave this DP: ACH does NOT count as a transaction for EZChoice Checking. I was charged $6.95 monthly fee for both my accounts but also had it automatically waived as a courtesy, it seems. Looks like I’ll need to do Amazon reloads. Ugh, annoying.

    • DirtyLilRat says:

You sure it posted befor your statement cutoff date? Deposit, withdrawal, or debit purchase shouuuuuld work.

      • Bob says:

Yes, I got the bonus so obviously the Alliant ACH went through as DD. The obvious conclusion is that ACHs do not count as deposits or withdrawals.

      • Bob says:

Alliant push as DD, then Alliant pull out to recover bonus

      • Ted Morrison says:

Hey William, On the phone M+T said that the account wasn’t completely opened.. that they are now requiring that I fax my SS card and some other documents, I think a utility bill. Did anyone else get asked these things? Jesus christ.. I don’t really want to send my SS card through the fax.. seems a bit insecure.

I am also worried now whether the bonus code would even still apply.. because the account wasn’t opened at the time that I applied. I need to manually fax documents and then somebody at M&T bank has to manually approve the account.

Do you think it’s even worth it to try to get the bonus? I have no experience with this bank before. Never even heard of them until I saw this promotion posted on several sites.

        • MJG says:

I now have 3 opened M&T accounts. On the first one, they asked me to fax in SS card and utility bill. I did so, but I have to say that my bonus had already posted by the time I got the letter, and I had ACHed bonus + initial deposit by that point. So not sure if anything would happen if you *didn’t* do it. Letter mentioned restrictions on transactions without that info but that isn’t very specific and it obviously didn’t prevent me from doing anything I need to get and take out the bonus.

    • Pat says:

I, too, had the $6.95 monthly “SERVICE CHARGE” fee debited from my account. Then an immediate $6.95 “ONE MONTH WAIVE” credited it back. When I phoned in and asked about this they said that even with activity on my account (transactions, deposits, withdrawals), this debit/credit will happen every month. Seems a bit shaky of an answer to me, but that’s what they said. Note that I did have several deposits and withdrawals initiated from an external bank account.

The rep also assured me that it makes no difference whether the activity is generated from M&T or my external account, any transactions during the monthly cycle will waive the fee with the EZ Choice Checking. I suspect next month I’ll have to deal this this again AND an NSF as the fee will take my currently positive balance into the negative and the One Month Waiver will be depleted.

  23. James says:

1/08 Opened account out of state in Florida with code QL
1/10 Wells Fargo Trial deposits posted, set up $100 ACH transfer
1/15 Wells Fargo ACH and Bonus posted at 12am

VERY nice! Thanks DOC! I’m going to try my luck with the other 2 bonus codes next.

  24. Biggiefries says:

Do I have to keep the bonus money in the account for 180 days?

  25. Ken says:

Opened #3 for me this morning and got account numbers. Tried for #2 for my wife just now and it was not instant approval. Has anyone gotten this and still had the account opened?

    Application Review

Thank you for applying for an M&T Bank account. We are in the process of verifying the information you have provided.

You will be contacted by telephone or e-mail within the next three (3) business days.

    • MarcoPolo says:

      @ Ken

Same thing happened with me when I applied #2 for and my wife.
Mine got approved but DW’s got the “Application Review” message.
      Haven’t heard from them since.
I think they are tracking IP address since I cleared the cookies after my application.

      • Ken says:

How long have you been waiting to hear back from them? I’m not in one of their states so there’s no way I could call to push it through.

        • MarcoPolo says:

It’s been 5 days and haven’t heard from them.
I am trying not to call to avoid answering “why did you open the second account ?”

          • Ken says:

I’ll update if I hear from them or if the account just shows up with her other login.

          • gina says:

            Any updates?

          • Ken says:

It’s been 6 days since I applied and got the pending message and I have heard nothing from M&T yet. The new account hasn’t shown up online like they usually do in 3-4 days. I applied 2 days after my wife and her account showed up Monday, so mine should have shown up yesterday but it didn’t.

          • Miya says:

Just call them. I got the “app review” message on my very first M&T app ever, annoying since DH was able to open multiple without issue. Called on the 3rd day, and they said they’d review and call me back. I didn’t get a callback so I called them again the next day and the CSR gave me the account number immediately. I’m not in one of the targeted states.

          • Steve says:

Don’t call. What’s the rush? It will show up eventually. Calling is a good way to draw attention to your account.

          • Ken says:

I would never call, as that’s a good way to bring their attention to this loophole. If the account doesn’t show up next week and I don’t hear from them I’l write it off as dead for me.

          • Ken says:

Now 7 days and new account has not shown up yet for me. This is over twice the time it normally takes for M&T accounts to show up in existing logins for me.

May be dead for at least myself. It was a good $800 run for me though.

          • Ken says:

Received letter from M&T today with new account number and I setup a new login. Still not showing up under my other logins so I don’t know what’s going on.

    • MarcoPolo says:

I have a feeling that your wife’s account will not show up under her previous login.
I had to enroll my wife’s second account separately since it did not appear under her previous login.
I think it’s because that pending applications are manually reviewed and approved since I also received a “signature card” with name of my wife handwritten along with the paperwork of the second account. HTH

      • Ken says:

Alright, I’ll keep my fingers crossed that we get something positive in the mail soon.

      • Ken says:

Received a letter that her account was approved, and they gave us the account number in the letter. Also it does show up under her 1st login.

  26. MarcoPolo says:

    This is odd.
Received an email this morning “Thank you for opening your new M&T checking account”.
Just received the Debit card for the second account.
But it does not appear under my first online account?
What should I do now- sign up for online access for the second account or wait for it to appear by itself.
During second account application I did enter my first account # as asked If I have an account with M&T Bank.

  27. Simon says:

I have a security freeze on my Equifax report, but not the other two. When I tried opening this checking account online, I got the message saying that they cannot approve my application. I called the number provided and the rep checked my app and said there is a freeze on my credit report, and she suggested I submit another app as they pull different agencies each time (which is a lie). I tried submitting two other apps, with same result – cannot approve my apps. Seems like a no-go for me.

    • Ken says:

Other people have mentioned that they pull Chex for them. Interesting that they’re doing EQ for you.

      • Simon says:

I don’t know if they’ve pulled Chex for me. they were definitely trying to pull EQ and didn’t succeed – the id verification questions I got (about previous addresses, loans, cars) were pretty bizarre and don’t apply to me at all.

    • MarcoPolo says:

      @Simon
It’s very odd that they told you that.
I checked mine and DW’s credit karma report and there is no credit inquiry.
The only explanation can be that you are probably not opting out of overdraft coverage.
Banks check credit report for overdraft coverage since they are basically extending credit to you.

      • Simon says:

        @MarcoPolo
when I open bank accounts, I specifically make sure I never opt in overdraft. My guess is that they do a soft pull from Equifax to verify my id. Apparently the phone rep I talked to had no clue about this.

  28. Yoshi says:

    DP:
    Applied 3/12
Opening deposit posted 3/17* (actually still pending)
    WF transfer 3/16
    Bonus posted 3/16

*Note: I already had multiple M&T accounts before I opened this account, including an account I used to get the $150 bonus. In fact, the opening transfer came (or is coming, it’s yet to post) from one of those M&T accounts. I did not have to “hide” the fact that I was a current customer.

  29. Ted Morrison says:

On the phone M+T said that the account wasn’t completely opened.. that they are now requiring that I fax my SS card and some other documents, I think a utility bill. Did anyone else get asked these things? Jesus christ.. I don’t really want to send my SS card through the fax.. seems a bit insecure.

Do you think it’s even worth it to try to get the bonus? I have no experience with this bank before. Never even heard of them until I saw this promotion posted on several sites.

  30. MarcoPolo says:

    @Ted
Not a good idea to post your full name on the web.
You might ask the site administrator to remove your last name from the post.

    Regarding your question:
Yes, your account have to be manually approved but it doesn’t mean that promotion will not apply.
Why don’t to call them before sending in the documents they asked you to send?

  31. Kate says:

Triggered the direct deposit with an ACH push from Ally–bonus posted immediately.

  32. PandakA says:

    DP
I was instantly approved for the EZ checking on 3/16/17. Received my debit card 3/21/17 and when I tried to create an online banking profle I wasn’t able to. I was asked to call customer service. I had an account with M&T maybe 4 years ago that I closed at a branch, or so I thought. CSR told me that the account wasn’t fully closed so that is why I couldn’t create an online banking profile. I was put on hold for at least 15 minutes while the issue was resolvled.

    Just thought I would share.

  33. Chris M says:

I have my debit card and enrolled in online banking for an EZ Choice checking account using this promo code. I am interested in opening a second account using a different promo code. During the account sign up process, it asks if I am a current customer (now I am) and for my account number. I haven’t received anything in the mail telling me my account number. Is there any place on the online banking site that will show my full account number? Right now, I can only see my last 4 digits.

  34. MarcoPolo says:

Same thing happened again with me when I applied #3 for me and my wife.
Mine got approved but DW’s got the “Application Review” message.
This time I opened them two days apart.
Maybe it has to something with the time of the day.

  35. Ken says:

Wife’s account went pending last week. Received account info few days ago. $110 ACH received today along with $200 bonus.

My instant approval a few days ago had blank account number. Hopefully it pops up in another login so I can get the account number.

  36. MarcoPolo says:

    Good to hear Ken.
Now wondering if I should apply for $160 bonus offer which is exclusively for NY.
Your experience gives me hope but I’ll be pushing it a bit.
Think I’ll rather try $250 bonus though 🙂

  37. PatWithThePens says:

I’m not sure which of the bonus codes I used when I signed up for my account. Anyone know of a way to find out?

  38. Jake says:

Anyone know if this offer has renewed yet?

  39. Thomas says:

DP – Santander still working as DD; bonus posted immediately.

  40. Jake says:

Looks like M&T bank won’t let me open an account online anymore. Any ideas? I do currently have 7 accounts open with them so that might have something to do with it

  41. Wad says:

We opened 3 separate accounts same day..3 different family members. All three opened fine.transfered 100 from citizens into each of 2 accounts which posted fine along with bonus…but with 3rd account we did 100 transfer from Key..it along with initial deposit posted ok, but no bonus😭. The Key transfer went as “BANKTOBANK” and grumpy manager on phone said that wont quaify. Ill just send 100 over from Citizens like I did with the other two, and hope that works…
Curious…anyone try and see is Paypal transfer from PP balance would trigger the bonus?

  42. Lynn says:

Does anyone think it would make a difference if we applied for second or third accounts in incognito mode on the browser? thanks

  43. Castro says:

Code is still available. It expires 5/24/17

  44. Justin says:

Have there been any DPs of people applying with the same promo code twice and either getting or not getting the bonus?

    • Patti says:

I’d like to know this as well

    • V says:

I did a double application once using QI – I thought I had failed the identity questions, so I re-applied using the same code. Ended up with 2 accounts with the same promo code, bonus posted twice.

      • mike t says:

thats ridiculous. i love it. may try that in a while.

      • Mark says:

Same – I used the same $150 code that is still active from last year that I didn’t realize I already used but opened a different account and a bonus posted.

        • Ken says:

I wonder if when they extend the expiration date they end up deleting that promotion and creating a new promotion. Either way I would never hold any good amount of funds in a small bank that hands money out like candy. No way that is sustainable.

          • mark says:

Very well could be the case re expiration date. They did do 5B in revenue last year but I agree makes sense to play it safe..I pay off a CC balance as soon as the bonuses post.

        • mike t says:

if i didnt have 2 accounts pending right now, i’d do this promo code again and see what happens.

    • James says:

Lets all just open like 50 M&T accounts, what could possibly wrong? :^)

  45. mike says:

Anybody know how much tax do we need to pay after we get 1099-MISC from bank?

  46. Dave C says:

Shows “expired” in title, but extended in the body. Which is it? (Assuming it’s extended).
    Thanks

  47. Theory says:

Are there any data points on whether or not transferring between two M&T checking accounts qualifies to keep EZ Checking free for that month? Is that a “qualifying transaction”?

  48. JL says:

to avoid monthly MyChoice Plus Checking fee in NYC:

Keep an average daily balance of $2,500 or more in the account per monthly service charge cycle
    OR
Have direct deposits to your MyChoice Plus Checking account totaling at least $1,500 per monthly service charge cycle

    • Ian says:

Will needs to fix the account section for MyChoice Checking Plus.. the minimum is NOT $500 or $1500; it’s $2500 (in Baltimore,MD or Norwalk,CT). The MyChoice Checking account is not offered anymore.

  49. Scott says:

The last M&T offer I did gave me my account # on the confirmation page, so I was able to set up online banking and direct deposit quickly.

This time I didn’t get an acct # on the confirmation page.

I know people are finding it in their SM outbox, but how are you enrolling in online banking? Are you waiting for your debit card to arrive and enrolling with that?

  50. LC says:

Sorry if I missed it… I see you need to leave the account open 180 days or $50 fee.

My question is, can you withdraw the bonus prior to the 180 days, say right after it post? Any insight would be greatly appreciated

    • Patti says:

Absolutely, take the bonus and use it. For my previous 2 accounts I pulled out the bonus, the dd that triggered the bonus, & the openinng funding $$.
I left the trial deposits from Capital One 360 which totals about $0.50.
I started feeling bad while opening another account so I sent $500 so it doesn’t look so unused.

  51. Scott Degen says:

You need to enroll in online banking just once, for your first account; your 2nd account (for which you didn’t receive acct number after successfully applying) will appear in your online account list in a day or two, but will just show its last 4 digits.
Myself, I sent the SM to customer service asking what’s the full account number. Answered my own question by displaying my Sent Messages and Lo and Behold it reveals the full account number in its headings! Yeh!

      • Ken says:

this may not always be true. I’m on account #5 and it did not show up with the other 4 accounts. I had to create a new login.

Also you can transfer $1 from one account to another and looking in the transaction history it will show the full account number.

      • Ralph says:

For my second account in which I had the account number, and after a week of not seeing it in my online account, I messaged them and they manually created it so it shows up now.

Hopefully future ones will show up automatically as others have reported, hate to have to create a separate login each time.

  52. Prometheus says:

Got the bonus from push Citi IIS. Coded as P2P.

  53. Prometheus says:

Citi codes as p2p when using IIS. Still got the bonus for QL.

  54. Avi says:

FYI, the $3 monthly charge for my Basic Banking account was waived for the first month. On 4/14, there was a $3 service charge and the same day a $3 credit stating “One Month Waive.”

  55. El Guapo says:

DP on app failures. My wife got two promotional accounts even though we are abroad at the moment by using our VPN service. When I tried the same way, the apps stopped before verification questions. Thinking that they would ask for documentation, I called and was told that the system flagged that my IP address did not match my home state and i would be unable to try again for 31 days. So, VPN may or may not work for you.

It’s fine, of course, and I knew I was pushing it by applying from abroad instead of waiting to get home.

    • MoreSun says:

Most interesting. I think the last app I did I had to type in a zip code at the beginning (didn’t have to do that for the others). I errored out at the same place you did. Applying from CA, typed in a NY zip code.

      • lingua says:

I’ve been able to continue with 5 for wife but am stuck after 2 since I think I messed up with a verification question. Now it stops me before the security questions as well. Have tried with different locations/computer after a few days but with same result. Hopefully some DPs show about timeline in resolving this…I’m in CA.

        • MoreSun says:

I don’t know that anyone has successfully opened an account online since around 4/14 or 4/15? Fingers crossed M&T is just having some IT issues or are swamped or something right now and will be back to normal soon!

        • MoreSun says:

@lingua can’t reply to your below comment but thanks for answering! I went back a few days after my errored out incident and tried for acct #4 and it went through this time. I went for QC instead of QL (got errored out on QL last time, so decided to try something else). Didn’t get an account number on the confirmation page but I know it will show up eventually online or in the mail.

          • lingua says:

nice. How long did you wait? It’s been 6 days for me. Wife’s account #4 and 5 also didn’t provide an account number like the previous as you allude, not of concern.

          • Ken says:

Over a full week for me and 2 weekends.

        • MoreSun says:

4 days since I errored out on #4 originally. Also it happens to be 2 weeks + 1 day from when I opened #1. I keep trying to see some rhyme or reason to the error but maybe it was just an IT mishap or something this weekend? (I also applied this time using the in-private browsing setting on my browser, no idea if that made any difference.) Good luck when/if you try again!

        • MoreSun says:

Did you try with in private browsing mode or incognito mode on your browser? I was finally able to open QL today (my fifth, and final code for now!). No idea if that helped me finally get #4 & #5 open or not. I again got the confirmation but no account number.

          • llingua says:

The fact that you were able to sign up again after being blocked is a good DP.

I’ve tried in incognito and at different locations with no luck after about 9 days. Will wait and see.

When I get the dreaded “cannot process online at this time” message, there’s an option for chat, but I’m assuming chatting is equivalant to calling in for a promo where I don’t meet reqs. (out of state)

  56. Money D says:

I recently signed up for 2 M&T checking accounts and received the bonuses for them already, however it looks like they are not letting me sign up for any more online. I want to try and get 2 more available bonuses. Does anyone know if they will let me sign up for 2 checking accounts in branch at the same time and still be qualified for the bonuses?

    • MoreSun says:

Woah there! It specifically states in the disclosures one bonus no matter how many accounts you open. No way would I try to open 2 in branch at the same time, it’s like begging the bank to flag you for suspicious behavior.

    • Ken says:

Going into the branch to chase multiple bonuses is a recipe for failure for any bank usually, but especially for M&T. We want to keep this gravy train going for as long as possible.

    • Mike t says:

please do not go into bank and ask for 2 bonuses

    • Patti says:

I would only try for one if going in branch. I’d also be prepared with a good explanation if they ask why you want another account. Just in case.

  57. mjm says:

MJM asks – Has anyone enrolled in M&T Classic with Interest with the promotion applying? It wasn’t on DOC’s list of accounts. Any info appreciated.

  58. David says:

Have people been able to use the same code 2 or more times with the same applicant?
If so, how long between account openings?

  59. Josh says:

I keep getting a message with a confirmation number as message starting you will be contacted in 3 business days by phone or email. This was even for the first account and then got something in the mail with account docs and that it was opened. I’ve never been able to successful open one online without issue. Any ideas why this is?

    • MarcoPolo says:

      @Josh
      No one really knows.
For example, I was successful in opening my first account without any issues but my DW had the same issue as yours.
Then I has similar issue with my 2nd account but 3rd account opened online without any issues. On 4th account I got the message but when I logged in next day it was already there.
My DW has not been that lucky, since one of her account they asked to FAX in documents and despite them opening it and DD the bonus did not post. Maybe because DW used VPN to open her account.
So, there is no single factor which makes sense and we all are scratching our combined heads to figure out how M&T operates 🙂

      • Josh says:

There was another comment about the IP address location causing issues, I will fax in requested docs and then try from a local IP.

  60. Patti says:

Has anyone applied using their cell phone?

    • Ben says:

I thought about doing this to perhaps avoid the current issues with multiple accounts and such. However, my IP from my LTE connection was in CA, which is very very far away from my home state. I think this would cause more issues from their system than multiple sign ups per IP

      • Patti says:

        Oh well, just an idea.
My employer’s wifi is not secure so I’d be afraid to go that route.

        • MarcoPolo says:

          @Patti
What about using your cellphone’s data connection as hotspot for your Laptop? That should work.
You can also use an android OS on USB drive (e.g. Remix Mini OS) on your computer instead of your usual OS.
I might try to change my Modem. That should give me a new IP address 🙂
There is a Linksys Advanced DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem on sale for $19.99 at Amazon.
          Worth the effort IMHO 🙂

          • Ken says:

Or go to a neighbor’s house to use their computer for 10mins.

          • MarcoPolo says:

            @Ken
I don’t know what kind of bugs they have in their computer.
I might just “borrow” they WiFi for few minutes or use the free XFINITY WiFi hotspot.
But I think it’s safer and easier to just change the modem since I might need the new IP for (hopefully) future sign ups too 🙂

      • Josh says:

That could be my issue for the contact notices I’ve been getting.

      • MarcoPolo says:

        @Ben
How to find the IP of a cellphone data connection?

        • Ken says:

Go to http://www.whatismyip.com in a web browser. Make sure you’re on data and not wifi.

          • MarcoPolo says:

            Thanks @Ken
So the idea of using my cellphone as a hotspot just got thrown out of the window since the ip address is from a
different state hundreds of miles away.

        • Gadget says:

You can Google it and find your IP right from the search engine page. What I found that was interesting (to me) is that my cell phone carrier has moved to IPV6 when on cell data… (hexadecimal address, not the typical IPV4). On wifi, your cell is going to have the same external IP as your computer on the same home network.

You guys are over-thinking this. Why would you need a new IP address when they approve the accounts manually anyway when they “error-out”? We don’t know that unique IP is the trigger for automatic approval. Personally, I hard reset my cable modem and router usually about once a week, just because I am a geek, and then verify my IPV4 address changed (speedtest.net). However, I don’t believe that has impacted my auto, or lack thereof, approvals.

          • MarcoPolo says:

            @Gadget
Because it’s driving my crazy why some applications are getting immediate approval and some not with almost everything else being same i.e. me and my DW.
Although I agree with you that it doesn’t really matter as long as the applications are getting approved 🙂
But I am not really happy that one of my DW’s application needed documents to be FAXED and although the account was opened it did not get the bonus despit two ACH DD of >$100.

    • NBG says:

Tried for my wife and same end result- come to branch :(.

      • MarcoPolo says:

        @NBG
I think you should check your and wife’s CHEXsystems report.
        Something is spooking them.

        • NBG says:

I did order my wife’s CHEX report and nothing out of the ordinary.
Mine, i dont have an issue even after 7 accounts, it’s going strong.

          • MarcoPolo says:

            @NBG
Are you applying for your wife immediately after your application.
That might be an issue since their “system” might be “seeing” two applications at a short interval from the same IP address?
This is what I was thinking is causing the problem with my DW’s applications too.

  61. NBG says:

@MarcoPolo nope, completely different days, PC’s, tried from office, home- nothing. What’s strange is at one point- only once, it came to the verification question, then after the answers, it gave the same error to come to branch. I think it has been about 10 tries in a span of 2 months. Guess, i will give it a rest for few months.

    • MarcoPolo says:

      @NBG
Nothing makes sense with this bank.
You might try – your wife to go to the branch to apply. That way you might find out the reason for multiple denials (unless you don’t have any branches nearby). This way she’ll get the bonus too.
Apart from this I am out of ideas.

    • MarcoPolo says:

      @NBG
You might to look at this post: https://www.doctorofcredit.com/banks-credit-unions-chexsystems-inquiry-sensitive/#comment-362037

He was also denied by M&T Bank with no adverse report on CHEXSystems.

    • gina says:

Does the location at the top of the page say New York before you apply? My dad had his browser update it to his current location and got the come in bank message. He applied 3 hours later and didn’t change the location and it worked.

      • Patti says:

        Interesting….
I never look at that because I put the log in page in my Favorites. When I apply for a new account, I click the link from the offer page and dont ever go to the home page.
Now that I check, it says my home town.
Are you saying it’s better to change that? Or that to make sure that matches your home zip code when applying for a new account?

        • Ken says:

It makes no difference. I left it at the NY location and I still get the “we’re verifying your account” message. i can’t remember the last time we got an instant approval.

        • gina says:

Depends on your msg. When we did it the address was not the default NY and we changed it and half way in got the please come into branch msg. We then opened incognito/private browsing and left the NY default and got the end with the confirmation. One with instant account number and one without a number that they mailed later.

  62. EO says:

A DP: My wife opened her 8th account with code QL. This was the second account we opened with this code. Bonus successfully posted today.

    • NoonRadar says:

I was gonna try this but haven’t gotten around to do all the codes once, did 2nd & 3rd same day, a few hours apart, got account nrs for both but 3rd isn’t showing any transactions (trial deposits etc) so figured I’ll wait until that happens before opening more.

How long from the 1st QL bonus until the 2nd one posted, approximately?

Did you guys open the account type (guessing EZChoice) both times?

Did you try to repeat any of the other codes or was this your first attempt?

      Thanks.

    • Jim Buckman says:

Wow.. so we can open another account with the SAME CODE we already used once.. and get the bonus a second time? Just making sure I read you correctly and I’m not dreaming.

      • EO says:

Yes, that is correct. At least that’s exactly what I did. I don’t know if matters that “QL” had been extended or not, but it worked. God bless M&T.

        • Superchurn says:

This seems very vulnerable to clawback. I’m not trying to naysay, but re-using promocodes, even if it works, seems very risky

          • EO says:

I agree I run the risk, but wanted to see if it worked. Not likely to repeat with all the other promo codes. However, this bank clearly wants new accounts and is willing to pay out against them. They are very much aware (or should be) my wife and I have opened a total of 13 accounts, with each one generating a bonus. If they were interested in stopping me, it would have been very easy to deny the 6th, 7th, or 13th account.

I don’t disagree this is unsustainable. But that’s why I am making the decision to strike while the iron is hot.

          • NoonRadar says:

I concur, let’s not be too greedy and possibly run into issues, besides the increased risk of the deal being killed altogether while many of us are still waiting for some of the bonuses to post.

I was going to try it, I admit, mostly to see if this would work, yeah might have been tempted to abuse it, but no it doesn’t seem nice or worth the risks, so I’ll keep it one bonus per code if M&T will let us keep the bonuses. I’ll also keep the accounts open for a while with a bit of money in them and schedule myself reminders to do a couple of random transactions/month.

    • Ben says:

Now we are truely asking to end these bonuses

      • Anna says:

        ^This
Please don’t kill the Golden Goose.
        We ALL lose !!!!

      • Ken says:

Seriously. This definitely crosses a line for me into abuse territory, and I will not be reusing already used codes.

        • NBG says:

Exactly!. MTB is not that stupid to not realize what is going on already. Its’s a WIN-WIN for now, but i don’t think they will let this happen for long before closing the door. My biggest worry is them taking our bonus back showing the terms.

          • Ken says:

Terms specifically state that the code is once per person. Even if their system does allow it they could always claw them back, and that’s not something I’m willing to do. They also report to Chex, please don’t forget that people.

        • Patti says:

Wait, but having 7 accounts is not abuse?

  63. Jack says:

I live in California but will be in DC next month, any data points of someone from out of state receiving the bonus or even being allowed to open an account in the branch?

  64. Kalei808 says:

I submitted my first app for EZChecking and got a confirmation but no account number. I’m not in one of the qualified states. Then submitted my 2nd app a day later and again, confirmation, but no account number. Do I wait until it comes in the mail? Or try to set up an online account using my SSN? Then to trigger the bonus, I just deposit add’l $100+ in both?

  65. Jim says:

I already sense something is changing with this opportunity. I am noticing a huge slowdown in progress from step to step…I have one account where all requirements were met a few days ago, no bonus yet. Another account, I got the welcome email several days ago and it’s still not showing up in the list online.

I have already gotten one bonus, can’t see myself calling and asking why they are not giving me the other bonuses, lol. Guess I will just transfer some small automatic transaction to avoid fees, then close these out after a few months if the situation doesn’t pan out as hoped.

    • MarcoPolo says:

      @Jim
      Sounds like a good plan.
      That’s what I am doing.

    • MoreSun says:

Ditto to the slowness, but I’m not sure if something is changing or the bank is having internal IT other issues. My first accounts were fast. My 2nd to last account was 3 days before they took the initial funding and another couple days before it showed online and then another day or two before ally trial deposits and initial funding showed in the account online. Every step was much slower than usual. I sent Cap360 initial deposits TWO days ago and they have yet to show in the account. (I screwed up my Ally link by looking at the wrong M&T account and entering the wrong trial deposit amounts so I wasn’t able to link them online, I called Ally today to try again and Ally said I have to wait until they get the previous trial deposits back from M&T.) Considering trial deposits from 2 outside banks are clearing this slow I’m not at all surprised bonuses have slowed too, but I wouldn’t worry at this point!

Fwiw my last account, QL actually, was approved 4/18 online with no account number and I haven’t received anything on the account yet. The first step for me is when I see initial funding pulled from my outside bank but they haven’t even done that yet. I can be patient- all I have to do is remember how long HSBC took to do everything! This is nothing!

  66. Ken says:

Account #4 for my wife 4/22. Did not even get to the account funding page. Account showed up in her login today, 4/25. Pretty good considering it took almost 2 weeks for the account to show up for my last one. I think we may have one more promo code that both of us haven’t used yet.

    • MoreSun says:

Can take 2 weeks- thanks for the DP Ken!

    • MarcoPolo says:

      Same DP as Ken.
Took almost 12 days for the account to show online and by then I have already received my account info and debit card via snail mail ans was seriously considering getting a separate online access.
Let’s see if bonus posts this time.

      • Patti says:

        MarcoPolo,
If you want to start another log in to see a new account you can, and eventually it will get merged with your original account. At least this was my experience. When I applied for my 2nd account, I was afraid to say I already had an account so I answered ‘no’ to that question. I created a new log in and could view it just fine but a few business days later it showed up in my original log in.

Did you already push your DD?

        • MarcoPolo says:

          @Patti
My apologies for the delayed reply.
I pushed DD after the account showed under my previous log-in and the bonus posted as usual.
I am trying not to do anything these days which might draw attention of their fraud department.

          • Patti says:

Yeah, I hear ya. I’m laying low for a while. Dh and I each have 3 (2 used to be premium) and already I wonder how will I close these out after 6 months without looking like a jackass?

    • Gina says:

Same with me. Applied Monday, the 24th, for the fifth account for myself (all different codes) and it went straight to they will verify the information right after the security questions so I didn’t think I got them right. Account showed up online today, the 26th.

  67. Harry says:

Has anyone with multiple accounts closed one or more of the accounts? If yes, how do you close them…I mean you cannot SM and say I want to close my checking account since you have several of them. Do you specifically state an account number for closing?I am wondering if there will be a review/clawback of bonuses at closing time?

    • Ken says:

When you send a message you have to select the account you’re referring to, but I always put the last 4 of the account number either way. Better to be as explicit as possible so there’s no confusion.

    • MarcoPolo says:

      @Harry
There is no instances of any bonus clawbacks so far.
However, you should be aware of the early account termination fee of $50 if closed before 180-days.

      • Harry says:

yeah probably because no human other than the account owner need look at the account until such time as closing the account and that is when there could be a review of so many accounts under one name. And hence the question if anyone has actually closed one of the multiple accounts, successfully and without any issues.

        • Ken says:

I’m just going to wait till the 180 days are up and then start closing them out. No point losing $50 per account just to close now.

  68. Kevin Le says:

    maybe this was discuss already,
but for those that open an account and only have the confirmation number,
you can send a message with the confirmation number and that that card added to the account before the account number arrive!

    • Ken says:

No, that won’t work. It only takes a few days to show up, just be patient.

      • Kevin says:

I don’t think it’s about being patient, my account took a week and it only got added because she I called , they said it was something with my name but I filled out every application with the same exact thing.
Also it works because they replied saying they did it .

  69. tr3ndsetr says:

I opened 2 account using QL and QI ( as in eye ) , I took screen shots all way .
When i created my online profile , only 1 account showed up
I had to call the online services , provide them both my account numbers and ssn and they were able to link
    That number is

    1800 790 9130 online service dept

  70. ekopt says:

I opened my second M&T account on 4/20 and a week later it still hasn’t shown up in my online banking. I did not receive the account number on the confirmation page like I did for the first one. How much longer should I wait before calling? I’m not in one of the listed states, so I’d like to avoid contacting them if at all possible.

    • Ken says:

My last account took 2 weeks to show up online, and I got the welcome mailer a day later FWIW. Be patient. They’ll either approve you or deny you, but in either case they’ll mail you a letter outlining their decision.

  71. Jennifer says:

Opened 3 accounts 4/24 and the bonuses for 2 posted today 4/28 using Santander to fund

  72. Jags4186 says:

FYI M&T is starting to crack down. My online account was locked today and when I called they told me “due to unusual activity on my account” I need to go in branch to have my account unlocked. Public shaming is about to commence.

    • John says:

How many accounts? Did you zero out your accounts?

      • Jags4186 says:

I have 8, wife has 6 and she was locked out as well. Accounts were at $10 each.

        • EO says:

I have 13 between my wife and I and our online accounts are functioning as normal. Is there anything you did that was strange (other than opening 14 accounts of course)?

          • Jags4186 says:

I think there was a combination of things.

            1) I set up a bunch of $0.01 transfers between accounts internally to keep everything fee free

            2) Our passwords expired after 180 days (apparently M&T will force you to reset your password) and Mint kept brute force trying to log in causing everything to get locked.

1 other thing to note I called to activate my latest debit card and I was unable to do so. I wonder if they will end the relationship when I go in.

          • Ken says:

Wouldn’t be that bad if they severed ties and gave your $10 per account back, that way you won’t have to close accounts in 180 days.

But you’ll likely be banned from M&T in the future, plus they might put a negative dig on your Chex report which could hinder future bank openings.

        • Harry says:

I doubt this is a general crackdown. You had events happen specific to your account that drew attention there. Still, I would not be too concerned. Just go into a branch and talk about the password reset issue and you could still come out good. I also do not think your account and other person in your household account should be clubbed together for any reason. These 2 should be separately handled. It may just be as small as password issue…no need to jump the gun and worry before they even tell you why it was blocked.

This bank has poor online facilities, Not sure if anyone tried, but bill pay is a horror. For recipients in their published list itself, browser times out when trying to add a payee. I doubt they will have enough resources to try and find who is opening how many accounts automatically.

    • MarcoPolo says:

I’m pretty sure that your account was locked down due to “unusual activity on the account” by repeated sign-in attempts by Mint which alerted their fraud department.
It’s typical of fraud department to do that.

      • Jags says:

M&T has ended their relationship with me and they do not have a good system for that.

I went in and explained I could not get into my account and after calling I was instructed to go in branch.

After an hour with the customer service person trying to help me finally got a hold of someone in their “enterprise security team”.

This person was speaking regarding my multiple accounts with bonuses. After the banker got off the phone she disappeared for a while and came back, she informed me that they were “ending their relationship with me” and that “these bonuses are 1 per household, and “I should be lucky they aren’t filing a suit against me to get back the money”. I said I would close the accounts. She then said that if she closed all 8 of my accounts I would be subject to a $50 early closure fee on each. I obviously didn’t want that, so she left all of the accounts open with $0.01 in them. I received a cashiers check for the balance (minus $10 I was charged for the cashiers check). I asked about the one MyChoice Premium account and she said I would be charged $24.95 a month and the account would go negative.

        My options were:
        1) Let the account go negative $24.95 a month for 6 months
        2) Deposit $7500 to keep the account fee free for 6 months (no chance)
        3) Deposit $50 in cash, come back tomorrow when in posts, and close the account.

        I chose option 3.

I will also have to set a reminder to go back in 6 months to close the rest of my accounts. The customer service rep said there is no fee but I’m pretty sure the Ez Choice account has a $6.95 fee if there are no transactions. I’m debating continuing to push $0.01 a month into those accounts to keep them fee free.

My online access has been permanently revoked. I didn’t really have much to say and I did not want to put up a fuss–especially since I couldn’t believe they gave me the 8th $250 bonus which posted today.

The CSR mentioned that I had multiple pings from NJ, NY, CA, etc. over 800 attempts to log in. This must be from having the account linked to mint.com. I highly recommend anyone who has an M&T account linked to Mint, Quicken, or Personal Capital to unlink it. I feel like this is what caused the initial trigger to look at my account.

        • Ken says:

Sad to hear that this happened. So they didn’t charge you an ETF for the other closed accounts?

        • MoreSun says:

Lucky they don’t file suit against you? Haughty banker there! If they allow you to continue to access the accounts I would keep up the transfers. There is a fee on those accounts if there’s no activity! And closing an account with a negative balance is something that could go on your Chex…

          • Max says:

I know, bankers think they can launder money for al Qaeda, foreclose on homes they don’t own, commit giant fraud and bribe all the politicians in Washington to repeal regulation so they can crash the economy…. but you take advantage of their stupidity and it’s you who should be taken to court.

            Arrogant stupid people.

        • John says:

Wow, thanks for your post. So it seems they still don’t know thousands of people with multiple accounts? We should proabably drain our accounts fast now anyway.

        • Ian says:

Jag, so how much bonus money did you get from your 8 accounts, not including wife? Also, I’m confused; how are you to see your statements, check transactions, use billpay, do transfers? Are paper statements for all accounts free? Is wife’s the same story..and linked with like mint? Delink it.

          • Jags says:

I am not able to see my statements, check transactions, use bill pay, or do transfers from M&T’s side. This is so incredibly botched. I am going to try to push $0.02 a month into these accounts.

On the EZ Choice checking accounts the worst case scenario is that I pay $6.95 for 6 months or $41.70. If I chose to just close it now it would be $50, so either way it’s cheaper to wait it out. Reality is if they wanted to just shut me down they should waive the $50 fees but she didn’t have the ability.

I have 1 MyChoice Premium and my wife has 1 MyChoice premium. It is cheaper for us to pay the $50 ETF rather than wait it out and I am certainly not going to put $15,000 into a bank that has adverse actioned me.

I collected $1700 in bonuses, my wife received $1250.

Really was in a bad bargaining position, option I took is to try and figure it out vs. paying $700 in ETF fees…

        • Patti says:

Wow! Jags I’m sorry to hear this. What a nightmare for you and your wife. I hope this ends well for you.

          • lingua says:

On another note I have received calls on my home and cell phone from 1-888-816-7868 which appears to be a M&T customer service number.
Did anyone else receive call from this number and what is this about?

    • EO says:

After the first few accounts I opened, they just called to see if I needed help setting up anything. They were very friendly and not at all looking to interrogate me. After the fourth account or so, they stopped calling to check in with me.

Just received this offer by email:

Now through May 31, 2017, get 5¢ for every purchase you make (up to $25) each time you use your M&T Debit Card.

    http://i.imgur.com/kJlCbU2.jpg

Pretty weak offer… even a 1% credit card does better on purchases over $5. Maybe 5¢ is all they could afford after paying all these checking account bonuses.

  75. MarcoPolo says:

  76. Patti says:

    Lingua,
I honestly didn’t think he tried to misconstrue the facts. I think at first he thought the problem arose simply from having several accounts and the bank froze his account because of that. That is a reasonable assumption.

It wasn’t until he later went inside a branch and spoke to security & banking staff that he discover what caused his account to be flagged. It was not simply a matter of having several accounts but the fact that his Mint account gave the appearance that his account was practically under cyber attack. This is what raised eyebrows at the bank and got them looking deeper into his banking itself.

This is also why he reported back to us to warn people about using any programs that log themselves into your bank accounts. As in this instance, when the online account says it’s time to change your password but the program such as Mint can’t read that and keeps attempting to log in hundreds of times anyway, it’s going to wreak havoc.

It was like the perfect storm in the timing of it all.

I didn’t get to read any of it until I was on my train ride home from work and saw the story unfold. I didn’t feel mislead. Until he had all the facts, he was simply reporting what he assumed to be the truth at the time. Of course, reading various replies on my phone for 3 or 4 different M&T promo threads didn’t help either which is why I didn’t reply until after I got home and read it all on a desktop.
    =:o

At least he gave a thorough summary post branch visit of how it all panned out while at the bank and where he stands at the moment.

It’s educational to all of us to say the least.

    • MarcoPolo says:

      ^This
      @Patti
Couldn’t have said it better myself.
Once the ball is in Fraud Department’s court there is nothing anyone can do.

    • Eric says:

If you read through the comments and the time stamps you will see that lingua is in fact correct. Jags mentioned that they were “cracking down” without mentioning his other unusual activity besides having so many accounts.

Jags revealed the other activity only after EO questioned if there was anything that could have caused this. This was BEFORE he went into the bank (not AFTER like you wrote).

I’m only correcting what you wrote (and not bashing Jags). Although I would hate to be in Jags’ position I’m not sure how you people can find fault with what M&T did under the circumstances.

    • Jags says:

Why there were definitely attempts at humor with the “public shaming” comments I can tell you that it indeed was embarrassing as I was in the branch and seemingly the entire staff was trying to figure out how to unlock my account. 2 hours being there everyone knew I was being thrown out the door and why. Not that I necessarily cared, but at the end of the day everyone there was looking at me like I was a criminal.

What you all need to be aware of with M&T is that they require an automatic reset of your online password after 180 days. Since my first account was opened with them 6 months ago this is what caused the issue with mint.com. It must have just brute forced tried to log in when the password was rejected. I don’t believe any other activity on my part led to this. It was just a convergence of bad luck.

If you choose to continue with M&T bonuses, stick with the $200 EZ Choice accounts. What is obvious to me is that even though they “ended their relationship” with me, they don’t have a formal process to close someone out. I literally have to blindly push money to a bank that doesn’t want me as a customer to hope I avoid a monthly fee. I’m seriously concerned about overdraft fees since M&T doesn’t “waive” their monthly fee, they debit $6.95 then credit $6.95. I’m partly considering just eating the $700 in ETFs to avoid a larger problem. I don’t expect much help from the staff.

Whether or not they are cracking down on the bonuses, it is blatantly obvious they consider more than 1 bonus per household to not be within the terms.

  77. Patti says:

For anyone concerned that leaving a $0 balance would result in an overdraft of -6.95 when they debit the monthly fee,but then reverse it, do not worry. I kept $0 in our 2 M&T EZ checking accounts last year from June-Dec and was never charged an OD fee because I made sure there was some activity each month. I think this is because the 6.95 fee is immediately reversed. At the close of the business day it is not a negative balance therefore no OD fee.. The same holds true again for the 6 we have this year. I put a couple hundred in last week out of guilt but prior to that I only left the $0.42 or whatever little change was left from the Cap One 360 trial deposits.

Now I suppose if the account had no activity for that cycle and the 6.95 was not immediately reversed, you would be charged the OD fee because at the close of the business day there would be a negative balance. It’s so easy to keep it fee-free though with ANY activity.

    • Andrew says:

No OD fee if you forget to do the one activity, IME. I let one account do that for two months and just had to pay the monthly fee. No overdraft fees.

  78. Jags says:

Hi Everyone just a final update.

I went back to the branch today and they told me after further communication with their corporate team they decided to close all of my accounts and waive the $50 fees. I did have to pay $10 for a cashiers check to clear out the remaining pennies.

It took about an hour to close everything.

Overall I got off pretty easy–it cost me $20 to close the accounts and about 3 hour of my time. Hopefully no negative remarks on Chex or EWS.

    • NBG says:

Is this saga just for you or even your wife?. Thanks for all the update and providing DP’s.

      • Jags says:

This so far is just me but I assume the identical thing has happened to my wife seeing as she has the same message and is unable to activate her newest debit card. She just is pissed off and hasn’t dealt with it yet seeing as I do all the work and she’s just sort of along for the ride. We’ll put it off until next weekend.

Will definitely being going to a different branch to deal with it.

        • Harry says:

Firstly thanks for coming back and providing valuable information.
You got into this situation not of your own making but just out of bad luck. I thank you for coming back and continuing to provide good data points. While not everyone would get into that position, I think there are valuable lessons for everyone from story.
I also do not think it the end result is unfortunate. You are in fact better off than most us who have multiple accounts that we want to close but have to wait for the 6 months to complete. Its only that you will not be in a position to open more, but then everyone needs to stop at some point.
Second, I would suggest if at all possible go to another branch when you try to close the other family member’s accounts. May take a bit longer since they may have to figure it all out again, or may just get lucky with a different outcome…up to you. You could even go in not asking for online access to be reinstated since that you already know is out of question, but just that you want to close the accounts and see if they can waive the fees or some other such explanation that you can think of. Also a little time may in fact allow things to work themselves out since the locked online access may be released after some days have passed.

          • Jags says:

So one thing I forgot to bring up was when I initially called customer service about getting locked out I was transferred to someone in the Enterprise Security Team. He was the one who said he personally blocked my account and I needed to go in branch. He is also the one the personal banker ended up speaking with after an hour trying to figure everything out. I’m going to have my wife call during the week, hopefully get transferred to that team and then I think when I send my wife (definitely to a different branch) I am going to tell her to instruct them to reach out directly to the Enterprise Security Team and hopefully skip the first hour of trying to fix everything.

I do agree that getting all accounts closed isn’t the worst thing, as long as there are no negative Chex/EWS notes, and since I seem to be the first reported casualty I didn’t have to worry about a claw back. If they do decide to look further into this on a larger scale they may find they have to claw back bonuses.

The lessons everyone should learn are these:

Your initial M&T online password will expire after 180 days.

Do not link to Mint/Quicken/Personal Capital

If your account gets flagged for something unrelated it will invite further scrutiny.

M&T does consider more than 1 bonus against their T&C

        • NoonRadar says:

Jags, thanks for the data points! I’d say you made out well with closing the accounts without early termination fees. I don’t suspect they would report anything negative as you didn’t commit anything fraud-related.

Re Mint & pass, even without knowing this I instinctively picked up the max pass reset time. I don’t think there’ll be a problem with Mint unless the pass resets. People that let the option be at 180 should make themselves a reminder to reset the pass manually (both at MT & Mint) a couple of weeks before it resets.

        • NBG says:

          Thanks for the info.
I thought MTB gave the option to reset password every 365 days as well. The default is 180. But the drop down had other options. Unless, that is some other bank (can’t keep track of all the banks and minor rules).

          • Ken says:

They do, and I set mine to 365 as well. Shouldn’t be a problem at 12 months.

“Reset Passcode Days You can select your Passcode Reset Frequency when you change your passcode.”

    • Jack says:

Maybe you should get a copy of your Chex report in a few weeks to see if they reported anything.

    • Prometheus says:

While it is rather unfortunate that you lost your accounts, it is just that, unfortunate. But it is not a crackdown, but rather being exposed(getting people to take a look) in prone position(barely any money in most of your accoutns). Mint’s auto-login, which triggered the automatic lockout, made them take a look.

No one should feel sorry for your loss, because banks know that bare minimum accounts don’t make them any money and terminating the relationship would actually be more profitable. It’s the hidden terms. You give the bank money, they won’t penalize you, especially if they are in desperate straits. They make the money from loaning out the money present in your checking account. Having a bunch of $10 accounts and one $7500 who might downgrade in a months can justifiably be considered a customer who is not worth the money, and they’d be right.

    • MoreSun says:

Now that makes sense since the bank decided to terminate the relationship. Everyone goes their separate ways, you really didn’t need that to drag out & they certainly didn’t either. You & your wife had an amazing haul though! Hope you’re able to get your wife’s taken care of with minimal trouble.

  79. JuicyJosh says:

I decided to go ahead and get my share of the M&T pie. After reading Jags comments I was going through the first time account setup just now. Your default password reset period is set to 180 days as mentioned. However you can choose many other periods including a 365 day maximum. I went with 365 😉

  80. MM says:

Any harm in just making multiple sign ins, rather than waiting for new accounts to show up in your old sign in? I know it’s just impatience, but I’d prefer to get the new account login available to see trial transfer deposits/get the account validated to speed up the DD transfer.

    • Ken says:

No, but for me usually the new account pops up online in the existing account before I get the letter with the account number on it or the debit card. If you already know the account number you can start linking your external account and by the time it pops up you should be good to go.

      • MM says:

Yeah, I’ve been lucky to see the acct # at the end of each application. The trial deposits are always visible the next day after I set up the transfer, so if I create a new sign-in, it speeds up the process by probably a week or so (the time it takes for the paperwork/debit to show up/new account to show up in old signin).

That said, I’ll probably start letting them just show up now that I’ve run through the two $200 codes. Don’t really wanna mess with the $250 downgrade option, and the $150s I suppose I can be patient with:)

        Thx for the thoughts, Ken!

        • JuicyJosh says:

MM, what was your timeframe between opening the $200 accounts? I expect the QL bonus this week and will move on to QI.

          • MM says:

I’ve been doing them 2 weeks or so apart, only b/c I’m in 2P mode and with the timing of transfers and such it takes about a week to get approved/send transfer/receive bonus. So, one week the SO gets an account, I do the following, and so on. Worked well so far. That said, it sounds from this thread like people are going way harder than that. Probably just depends on what you’re comfortable with.

          • Ken says:

We do the same thing. One of us applies and we don’t open a new account for the next person until the account shows up online and we can get the bonus first. Then we move on. It’s been roughly every 7-14 days to open a new account depending on how long it takes the new account to popup online.

But we’re going to have to stop soon since we’ve used all the promo codes and now we’re all out.

        • MarcoPolo says:

What browser are people using to open account?
Maybe the account number not showing is a browser issue?
I’m using Chrome and have had the account number not showing 3/5 times.

          • Jenn says:

I used chrome 3/3 times. 1 account the day 1, and then 2 accounts the next day. I was unable to sign up for anymore after that

          • MM says:

Chrome – 4/4 with acct numbers now (2 each on QL/QI)

          • James says:

I used Firefox. First 3 accounts all had numbers, fourth one I had to wait for the paper in the mail, 5-7 showed up in online banking in 1-2 days and I just sent a secure message to see the account number.

          • Ken says:

This has nothing to do with the browser used. Some people get their account number while others get it in the mail or their account pops up in an existing login.

    • MarcoPolo says:

      Won’t help.
Even if you enroll separably for a new/subsequent account(s) they will be merged under your first log-in after a week or so.

      • MM says:

Sure, but that means waiting. By creating a second log-in, I can view the acct immediately, meaning I can see trial transfer deposits, meaning I can get the DD transfer set up more quickly. They do, indeed, get merged eventually, but there doesn’t seem to be any harm in having multiple log ins.

        • MarcoPolo says:

I suppose no harm but I personally prefer not to do so to avoid any unnecessary scrutiny because the system might see it as an unusual activity and get spooked leading to the intervention of their “fraud department”.
Recently my Capital one 360 account got flagged just for adding an external account and they checked my EWS report.
So I tend to keep my interaction with banks as little as possible especially when there is no real benefit.

          • Ken says:

+1. I’m not in any rush and don’t mind waiting a few more days for the new account to show up. I prefer to fly under the radar as much as possible.

          • MM says:

No, that’s a fair point and really the reason I asked the Q in the first place — the sense that maybe multi logins was going to invite scrutiny. I think now that we’ve exhausted QI/QL and the QC/QD are less valuable bonuses, we’ll regain our patience and just let them show up in the existing login(s):)

  81. Kalei says:

I’m not in one of the targeted states, and at the time of sign up, they didn’t give me my account number. I wanted to call, but people on here said to wait. It’s been over a week now, got a letter now asking for my social security card and utility bill.

The initial deposit to set up the account has also not been taken out…..so what to do? If I’m not in the targeted states, will they just not open the account now?

    • Ken says:

Fax them what they’ve requested. I’m not in a target state and they have manually approved several accounts.

      • Kalei says:

I don’t have a utility bill in my name either….it’s in my partners name but same address….think it’ll be ok?

  87. MoreSun says:

Kinda weird- I applied on 4/18 and received an application confirmation number but no account number. Initial funding hasn’t been pulled and I haven’t received anything from M&T regarding this account and it hasn’t popped up on my online login. I’m thinking of putting in another app for it next week if I don’t hear anything. Anyone been through this?

    • Flea says:

      (1) yes; (2), I never saw it, nor received any communication about its failure or whereabouts. Initial deposit was never withdrawn from the funding source, and I was blocked from opening any further accounts with the online “must apply in-branch” full stop, before reaching verification question stage (haven’t dared to try). This has happened to me 3x over different devices and browsers. Recent Chex is clear with no censures, so I decided to quit while I was ahead.

      • MoreSun says:

Yeah, I’m gonna quit for a while too then. I don’t want any issues and was starting to get a bit nervous as it was with just my 4 accounts.

    • Saturn says:

I have a variation of this weirdness: Application for my wife was successful, new (2nd) account appeared after only 3 days under the registered login. However: no funding was pulled, opening balance was zero. Today the trial deposits from WF are registered, I followed up with a transfer of $ 110, expecting it to post in 2 days.

At this point every guess will remain speculation. I opened another QI for my son and was basically forced to fund by check. The app was successful but showed only a confirmation number, no account #. – It is possible that your account is still pending because there was no funding. You could follow up by mailing them a check with your confirmation # and wait for a result.

Given Flea’s experience below this seems worth a try.

      • Ken says:

That is not the case, at least pertaining to account funding. The last 5 or 6 M&T accounts I never even got to the funding screen. ALL accounts were opened with no funding at all. I setup ACH link with my external bank, confirmed trial deposits, and then pushed $100 and the bonus has always posted.

Does a billpay waive the monthly fee for the EZ checking?

  89. DirtyLilRat says:

Does a transfer from one M&T checking account to another M&T checking account waive the fee?

  90. DirtyLilRat says:

Says my “payment and transfers” options not activated… So I can’t initiate a transfer from M&T. I probably shouldn’t call them.

    • Patti says:

That just means you haven’t set up a linked account through M&T. It’s not really worth the effort because M&T charges $3 for every transfer initiated by them. If you want to transfer $ it’s usually better to initiate it from another bank account.

    • MarcoPolo says:

You can easily set up M&T to M&T transfer by validating transfers by selecting an account and inputting your corresponding Debit Card #

    Hey guys!

So this is my first bank bonus attempt. I live in ND so things seem to be moving very slow. I went ahead and set up everything but it seems to be moving very slowly. I deposited the initial $25…and verification took nearly 5 days. Now I have a pending $100 transfer from my WF Savings account. How long until i should see the bonus pending? The WF transfer has been 3 days and its still pending :/

    • Patti says:

Wow, I don’t know why it’s moving that slowly. Then again I only did WF to get their bonus so I don’t know how efficient they are at pushing $ to other accounts. If I did transfer with them, it didn’t stick out in my mind that they were crazy slow like this.
Once I see a deposit pending, it usually posts the next business day along with the bonus too. The last account I got the bonus with, I scheduled the transfer from Cap One 360 on a Thurs, was pending on a Friday after work, then posted along with the bonus by Saturday morning. I was very surprised to see any changes occur between Friday evening and Sat. am.

      • Ehsanul Haque says:

A friend of mine (who is in one of the listed states) received his 3rd bonus before i got my first even though we started around the same time. Its just incredibly slow. I mean if i get my $200, i will happily take it. I made a 2nd account a few days ago but still waiting on the progress of that account. I just want this first try at a bank bonus to go smoothly!!

    • MoreSun says:

My bonus posted once my transfer posted. It didn’t go pending, just posted. Just be patient for your initial transactions to go from pending to posted.

    Interesting developments today:

I have opened 4 M&T accounts over the past 6 weeks: all EZ Choice, using different promo codes. The last account I opened was 5/15. I have already received bonuses on my first two accounts.

About a week ago, I initiated an ACH pull with Chase to withdraw from these two M&T accounts, even leaving $25.00 in each of them. They seemed to clear on Chase without any issues, but the amount was never removed from M&T.

Today, I got 2 secure messages from Chase saying: “We tried to transfer $300.00 to your external account by 05/15/2017, but the other bank wouldn’t accept it because it informed us the account is frozen.” The Chase balance no longer included the transfers. (NOTE: I was confused by the language “TO your external account”, but these were definitely pulls from M&T to Chase.)

Logging onto M&T, everything looked normal – and no transfer activity at all. But I was worried about this “frozen account” message from Chase. So I tested my accounts by setting up a transfer between M&T accounts. As feared, it was rejected, and I got a message telling me to call their customer service number.

I don’t know of any unusual activity that could have caused red flags (I don’t even have that many accounts compared to other users here). Of my 4 accounts, I have only gotten 2 bonuses; the other 2 have just been funded so far. Comparing this to the info provided by Jags, I don’t have Mint or anything similar accessing my accounts, and my online account is not frozen – I can see my statements.

I HOPE it’s just because I have a brand new account and the freeze will go away on its own. I desperately don’t want to call their customer service line, especially considering I may end up being transferred to the “Enterprise Security Team”.

Any other ideas from the folks on DoC? Did I do something wrong? Looking back, the only other thing I can interpret as a problem is that I set up my ACH pulls from the same account I had the deposits from. I didn’t consider it before now.

Obviously, I’m going to wait it out for now and report back, but any advice will be much appreciated.

See if you can withdraw money at an ATM. Also try few bucks of Amazon reloads using the Debit Card or a real Gas station/grocery use of the debit card.

    • Ken says:

A few of us were having trouble linking M&T accounts a few days ago, and they were being returned as account doesn’t exist or similar. Tried again and both accounts linked fine. Also Mint couldn’t find the accounts either. Seemed to be some glitch on M&T’s end that lasted for a few days.

    • Lee says:

      Update:

Couldn’t log on to Chase this morning. Got the message “account suspended, please call…”. I called them and entered my debit card number, and was given the automated message, “this card is closed”. Great. Continued on, and was transferred a few times to different people. Finally got “we’re ending our relationship with you”. When I said that I didn’t understand the cause, I was told that no more information was available and a check for the remaining funds will be mailed within 7-10 business days.

      Other info she gave me:

      – My credit card accounts will remain open *sigh of relief*
      – No date given for possibility of opening a new checking account, just that when I attempt to open an account, I will be looked over by a review team.

While I would have preferred to keep Chase open, it’s not the end of the world. Hopefully no negative Chex impact. I’ll get my Chex report AFTER everything is resolved with M&T.

No updates directly from M&T yet, but it’s only been a few hours. I haven’t tried NBG’s suggestions, but now I’m a little concerned about using the cards with any other accounts, even Amazon. As far as the ATM withdrawal and debit card transactions, I don’t have much hope, but I may try them soon. At this point, not knowing exactly what went wrong, and watching my other (legit) checking accounts close, the bank bonus game isn’t quite as fun anymore.

I’ll post updates as more info becomes available.

so strange. have you been depositing MO’s or anything in Chase? I wonder if this is literally just because of adding new transfer accounts and transferring

        • Lee says:

No money orders, no MS activity. Totally clean account except for the new transfer accounts. I set up several (maybe 5), including my legit accounts, and then the first transfers I attempted didn’t go through. So that may be the reason.

Small update: Chase credit cards still open, but I can’t login to my online account. I’ve been putting off calling them because I’m scared they’ll close them too, but I’ll have to call soon.

Any DPs of this code getting extended again (beyond the May 24th expiration)?

    • borntobehermit says:

+1 I would like to know the answer as well.

    • Patti says:

      I’d like to know too.

      • DeauxBois says:

I guess it’s time for me to be the DP I want to see. I just applied for a new account using the QL code. The app was approved, but for the first time, I didn’t get the account number on the confirmation page … only the routing number. I’ll report back once the “direct deposit” posts.

    • DeauxBois says:

The direct deposit posted, but NO BONUS. It looks like it’s actually expired.

Honestly, I’m surprised. I have such low expectations for M&T’s competence that I was fully expecting the bonus to show up when I logged in this morning. Oh well…

      • JC says:

I appreciate the info. Don’t give up yet. Perhaps it’ll post on Monday. If so, please keep us posted. Thanks! Enjoy the weekend.

        • DeauxBois says:

Still no bonus on Monday 🙁

          • Ken says:

Wow, I’m surprised that M&T seems to be enforcing their terms for a change. But that should be a lesson for all of us to not reuse codes and/or use expired codes and waste a Chex inquiry.

            Thanks for the followup.

      • Thanks for being the DP we want to see.

      • BonusHero says:

I’ve the same exact low expectations. But the Monday thing has happened with me; I just assumed at the time that if transaction posts after a certain time frame the bonus is not triggered. All but one of my bonuses have posted on Saturday with the transaction and all but one of my account numbers were generated right after the application. So may be there is light at the end of the tunnel or may be I am wishful thinking. Keep us posted.

  97. churnbro says:

Currently 5 M&T checking accounts in. Got 3 of 5 bonuses so far. During the online sign up process, I always select that I don’t currently have an account with them, then I call them up to join the newly opened accounts to my current online banking login. I wanted to ask if anyone knows if selecting that you have a current account will still qualify you for the bonus. thanks

  98. Patti says:

I opened #5 last week. Instead if the usual, “we need to verify your info” it showed the new account # at the end of the app. Also from that last page when it lists the new acct # I scrolled to the bottom and clicked the link for current acct holders sign onto my log in. The new account was listed there with the other 4.
This was around 11pm EDT so not even during business hours.
So after hearing about how easy dd pushes are with Ally, I opened an Ally account. Then made the dumb mistake to immediately enter my new M&T acct info so I can push from Ally. I should have waited a day or 2 instead of doing it all within an hour of opening both.
Ally’s trial deposits occur so quickly that my new acct was not even recognized in M&T’s system yet and denied the trial deposits. I called Ally to ask them to resend them and that I probably should have waited a bit before creating a link but it’s too late. For fear of fraud they will not attempt until I fax them something on M&T letterhead saying I am the owner of the account. So hopefully M&T sends their usual new account letter with account info. Just to prove them wrong at this point. I’ve already moved on with a push from CO360.

    • MoreSun says:

      Ouch!

I was just coming here to post to you Patti! I did the wait 30 days before attempting to open again (actually I waited a few days over that) and I opened my account just fine. I got the account numbers on opening as well, account showed up online immediately, I then linked to Ally and the trial deposits were there the next morning. I did this all during EST business hours though, maybe that’s what got you? But I’ll definitely wait next time! Now, I won’t be getting a bonus after all this effort- my stupid mistake- I read entering no code was a bonus even in the past and since I did the current active codes already I decided to give that a whirl. It didn’t work, this would have been obvious if I had remembered the couple of people who never got bonuses on accounts because we suspected they failed to input the code… but I didn’t remember that until AFTER I opened the account!

I’m impatiently awaiting the next code now 🙂

      • Patti says:

I’m kicking myself now for waiting so long in between. I missed out on a $150 and a $200. With hubby accounts that’s $700. grrrr….
I’m always afraid to push my luck. I just opened 2 more last week (1 for each of us) and think I’ll squeeze 2 more in next week. It might be a while until any new one are released. I wonder if they’re figuring out what’s really going on?

  99. bob wiley says:

Does transferring money from M&T to another bank via ACH count as account activity to avoid the monthly fee?

    • MoreSun says:

It has for me. I pull from M&T using Ally on a recurring monthly basis. Set it and forget it until it comes time to close!
