The Fine Print

  • Direct deposit enrollment and debit card order with new account required to qualify.
  • A $150 bonus will be credited to the new checking account within two weeks from second qualified direct deposit.
  • Transactions must post and settle to qualify.
  • Two (2) direct deposits must be an electronic deposit of your paycheck, pension or government benefits (such as Social Security) from your employer or the government of at least $250 each ($500 total).
  • Direct deposit sources will be manually verified prior to bonus payment. Checking account must be opened with the promotional code by May 31, 2019 and a debit card must be ordered at account opening to receive the bonus.
  • This offer applies to new personal checking customer accounts only and is limited to our Everywhere Connect, Premier, and Simple Checking account products.
  • Offer cannot be combined with other offers and is limited to two (2) incentives per household.

Avoiding Fees

Monthly Fees

Simple checking account has no monthly fee. Everywhere connect checking account (additional $5 bonus a month) has a $10 monthly fee this account has a $10 monthly fee, that’s waived if you complete with five debit card transactions or one recurring Direct Deposit. Make sure you opt for paperless statements otherwise you will be charged a $1.5 fee for paper statements.

There is also an inactivity fee of $4 if the account is inactive for three or more months.

Early Account Termination Fee

There is an early account termination fee of $25 if the account is closed within 90 days.

Our Verdict

Previously they only offered the $5 monthly checking bonus, but now you can get an additional $150 sign up bonus as well. Unfortunately no longer worth doing due to all the reasons they have added in the fine print to deny the bonus. Because of that I won’t be adding this to our best bank bonus page. Not anywhere near a branch, but in correct state. Applied. Awaiting contact/email from bank, per last page of app. These rinky-dink banks usually deny when out of footprint, but thought I would give it a shot.

Second page of application states: “All new accounts will be verified with ChexSystems.”

Typical multiple choice account opening identity verification knowledge based questions, 1 of 4 N/A for me. I assume that was the soft pull from one of the CRA’s. Looks like application is processed thru FISERV, so possible it’s whomever they are chummed up with at the moment.

No CC funding – ACH REQUIRED during application, no minimum specified so I did a $50. 5K max.

Lots of fees on the fee schedule, many are dependent on the level of checking chosen, making it a tough read.

Not normal: They may have different fee schedules for different states/regions, as my fee page says “Bristol, Virginia location is considered to be within East Tennessee market. Tennessee pricing applies at that location.”

I didn’t come across to order the debit card when applying for everywhere connect. I am assuming it comes after final approval but does anyone know for sure?

Just going off memory, but I think if you did the “Everywhere Connect” checking, a debit card was automatic and was listed as part of the product. It’s a requirement to keep the account fee free, so obviously your going to want one. Besides, most banks today you have to jump through hoops to opt-out of a debit card.

Per the main bank website, both the Simple(Free) and Everywhere Connect accounts come with a debit card. It will be ok, if they approve the account anyway.

Called to check on the status of the application. Spoke to a regular CSR (not someone who processes new accounts) and said she knows that new accounts are backed up, and they are hoping to be caught up by early next week. I suppose I could have asked her to transfer me, but I am not really in a rush on this one.

Slow, and doing it the old fashioned way, with paper documents – you have to call to get your account number to sign up for online banking, which I just missed the 7PM cutoff.

Trial WITHDRAWAL appeared in funding account. Verified using their website link from another e-mail.

Occurred to me this is the first bank I have seen do a single trial withdrawal vs. two micro deposits. Imagine how pissed someone would be if they caused the funding account to go NSF over a 60-something cent charge. I wonder if they will refund my 60-something cents?

Called to get account number. They ask for your name, last 4 ssn, and the ID number from the D/L you used. Got my acct number, hung up, and signed up for online banking, no issue. Well…

Paper statement fee. They show I was charged the $1.50 paper statement fee on Jan 31st. Next they show my 60 something cent deposit on Feb 1st. So I am 80 something cents in the HOLE!

I ASSUME they will go back in and credit the $1.50 fee, but really, not the way I wanted to start my relationship with this bank. Already overdraft… LOL SMH! I will give it a couple days before I go off on them. Watch me get assessed a $30+ NSF fee too and see me explode!

PSA, get yourself on ONLINE statements before the end of the month!!!

Hi Gadget, what type of paperworks/documents they ask for opening the checking account?

None. Used D/L number on application. They didn’t request copies of anything, but I have been at the same address for 15+ years.

I think they are mailing me a signature card to sign and mail back, prepaid envelope. Unless they have further directions in the letter to submit other stuff… no mention of it so far.

Waiting to see my funding deposit hit to do anything with the account. Still showing the paper statement fee causing a negative balance, so I definitely don’t want to throw any micro or trial deposits at it and have those go NSF. FNB PA did that to me once, and had to call 3 times to get the fee refunded.

Regardless, if I’m approved, I’d keep the account open longer than 6 months to take advantage of the $5 monthly bonus.

Got signature card today, waiting on debit card. Then, got a call from Hometrust, saw the caller ID, and instantly thought her comes the “we reviewed your information and cannot continue our relationship” as sometimes the loss prevention/fraud wienies will reject already approved accounts. So instead I speak to an overly enthusiastic (nearest) branch manager (3 1/2 hrs drive away). She soundly like I personally just gave her $5000, or maybe even a new car, by opening an account with them. As I hung up, I had to wonder if after the promo would they would be so tired and burnt out by the dash out the door many of us will do. Some of us might stick around for the $5 a month debit swipes, so it won’t be a complete mass exodus. But I don’t think we are the superstar clientele they were hoping for with our 50 cent Amazon reloads.

Waiting on debit card and PIN. Going with real DD. S.O. will be getting in on this shortly, and hopefully we have some DP’s for DD.

Applied today with a PA address and ID, and the app seems to have gone through up to now. They said ‘my account has been created’ at the end of the app. No CC funding. Definitely not Chex sensitive if I get in, have 77/36 and 31/12 inquiries according to the Chex report I just got today in the mail.

They retracted mine when I did a bank transfer early 2018 for a bonus so maybe I got unlucky with a manual review. Or possibly they started to automate the check since then. My $5 credit recently posted on the 13th so you may have to wait until March to find out about the amazon reloads.

The weekend they shut down the web page to the promo I thought about doing that for S.O. Doing it right away, you would have a better argument that the web page was cached on your computer, and that maybe they only took down the page, but the code would still be in FISERV where they process the applications. But there is no way to know for sure if they would accept it. With the footprint sensitivity now being an issue, S.O. will wait.

Had S.O. apply yesterday, and she got a denial e-mail today. “We received your application online, but are unable to process your request to open an account at this time.” No reason was given, other than to call or reply with any questions, and says “if you would still like to open an account, please visit any of our branch locations, and our representatives there will be happy to assist”. I would imagine denial was due to being out of footprint, but they did not say that. Just a couple months ago I got in from the same home address, but I probably wasn’t supposed to get an account. I am sure if we called and argued they would just say it was due to Chex, and there is no recon on bank accounts normally, so whatever they say goes. At about 14/12mo inquires, counting dupes.

JV Actually, yes, and no. I had S.O. reply to the denial e-mail and ask why she was denied. Here is verbatim what they said:

“At this time we are only accepting online account applications from individuals who reside within our regional footprint, as shown on our website here.” (“here” linked to https://www.htb.com/locations/)

My sarcastic response would be “can I move into any of these branches, or are they taken?”

I would assume 50 miles, but I just pulled that out of my a$$.. but you can ask OnlineAccounts@htb.com.
