[NC, SC, TN, VA] HomeTrust Bank $150 Bonus + $5 Monthly

Update 3/26/19: Deal is back but not nearly as good as before. Now requires two direct deposits and says that these direct deposits will be manually verified. You must also live within the HomeTrust Bank footprint. Because of these changes we are no longer recommending this bonus Hat tip to reader Gadget.

Update: Reader Himo Yu found a link for a $150 bonus (instead of $100) might be worth asking if they can match you to this higher bonus if you recently applied. Obviously the bonus itself is $50 better than the old bonus.

Offer at a glance

  • Maximum bonus amount: $150 bonus + $5 monthly fee
  • Availability: NC, SC, TN, VA
  • Direct deposit required: Yes, $250+
  • Additional requirements: See below
  • Hard/soft pull: Soft pull
  • ChexSystems: Yes, not sensitive
  • Credit card funding: Unknown
  • Monthly fees: None-$10
  • Early account termination fee: 120 days, $25
  • Household limit: Two
  • Expiration date: February 28th, 2019 May 31st, 2019 June 30th, 2019

The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • HomeTrust Bank is offering a bonus of $150, to receive this bonus you need to complete the following requirements:
    • Use promo code GET150
    • Receive two qualified direct deposits of at least $250 each
    • Debit card must be ordered
  • You can also get an additional $5 a month if the account you open is an everywhere connect checking account and complete the following requirements:
    • 10 or more signature debit card transactions per monthly statement cycle

The Fine Print

  • Direct deposit enrollment and debit card order with new account required to qualify.
  • A $150 bonus will be credited to the new checking account within two weeks from second qualified direct deposit.
  • Transactions must post and settle to qualify.
  • Two (2) direct deposits must be an electronic deposit of your paycheck, pension or government benefits (such as Social Security) from your employer or the government of at least $250 each ($500 total).

  • Offer cannot be combined with other offers and is limited to two (2) incentives per household.
  • Offer is not available to customers who have closed an account within the past 90 days
  • . If your account is closed within 180 days, an account closing fee equal to the bonus payment ($150) will apply.
  • Offer may be withdrawn at any time. Payments are subject to IRS tax reporting requirements.
  • All accounts are subject to normal bank approval and minimum balance requirements.
  • Bonuses are paid after a manual account review to verify criteria including but not limited to: direct deposit verification, debit card ordering, and physical address within the HomeTrust Bank market footprint.

Avoiding Fees

Monthly Fees

Simple checking account has no monthly fee. Everywhere connect checking account (additional $5 bonus a month) has a $10 monthly fee this account has a $10 monthly fee, that’s waived if you complete with five debit card transactions or one recurring Direct Deposit. Make sure you opt for paperless statements otherwise you will be charged a $1.5 fee for paper statements.

There is also an inactivity fee of $4 if the account is inactive for three or more months.

Early Account Termination Fee

There is an early account termination fee of $25 if the account is closed within 90 days.

Our Verdict

Previously they only offered the $5 monthly checking bonus, but now you can get an additional $150 sign up bonus as well. Unfortunately no longer worth doing due to all the reasons they have added in the fine print to deny the bonus. Because of that I won’t be adding this to our best bank bonus page. As always if anybody goes for it then share your experiences in the comments below.

In Arlington, VA. Both me and my SO tried to open an account and couldn’t get past the first page where you enter your personal information (said they could not open an account based on the information provided). Not sure if it was our address or something else, but interested to see other DPs.

Did you receive an email after completing the application? I ended up saving my application just in case. It seemed that my application was incomplete as I received no confirmation after checking that I had read the 61 page document at the end.

thats weird i just finished my application and i got a different email address??? my last page after completing the application says the email is onlineaccounts@htb.com

Same here. Didn’t pass the first step. Opened ~10 accounts in the past 3 weeks, don’t know if that’s the reason.

Ben

Tried three times with no success. In the fourth try, updated address by combining two lines into just one line and it went through…

missjenniferd1
missjenniferd1

i get the same message as you, and i assumed i must have forgot to fill out a section, so i went back again and re-did it, and it went thru fine the second time. i assume you left something out, because i answered everything exactly the same as the first time, and it went thru. i think i just forgot to enter something in, or misspelled something. who knows, but i would try again if you are interested. but carefully make sure you didnt miss anything.

How do you know if it’s a hard or soft pull? I will report back once I hear back from the bank.

It’s a soft pull + ChexSystems

+1 stan, but i decided to do it anyway, even though i just bugged my employer 2 weeks ago to change it to chase…. just going to tell them i wasnt happy with that bank and had to change again….oh well…. im a good employee, they can just deal with it!! i want my bonus money!!

Andrew
Andrew

ach $5 in. buy $5 in amazon gift cards every month in 50 cents, get $5 in free money?

literally free money

parkdanil

That may not work for this as it requires it be a Debit card purchase which may require a PIN be used.

Midnight
Midnight

Pin purchases don’t count. Must be signature.

Jeremy
Jeremy

It says signature based (that means ran as credit), not PIN based (ran as debit). So it should work fine.

Gadget

I am sure if a bunch of us start doing that… they will quickly make a minimum purchase, or dump us.
If they do change the rules, we should be able to just downgrade to Free Checking.

missjenniferd1
missjenniferd1

nah, im gonna keep $100 bucks in there at least, and just do $1 comcast transactions to my cable bill, like i do with my other 3 accounts that require 10 transactions.

parkdanil

The everywhere connect checking requires a $50 minimum opening balance.

Waiting on a couple more confirmations of it being soft pull before opening.

more curious on what counts as DD

Skor

As Midnight mentioned above (seems he has had prior experience with this bonus), they manually check whether it is a qualified DD or not. So most likely bank ACHs wont work

Not anywhere near a branch, but in correct state. Applied. Awaiting contact/email from bank, per last page of app. These rinky-dink banks usually deny when out of footprint, but thought I would give it a shot.

Second page of application states: “All new accounts will be verified with ChexSystems.”

Typical multiple choice account opening identity verification knowledge based questions, 1 of 4 N/A for me. I assume that was the soft pull from one of the CRA’s. Looks like application is processed thru FISERV, so possible it’s whomever they are chummed up with at the moment.

No CC funding – ACH REQUIRED during application, no minimum specified so I did a $50. 5K max.

Lots of fees on the fee schedule, many are dependent on the level of checking chosen, making it a tough read.

William Charles DoC – EATF = $25 for 6 months, not 4.
$1.50/mo. paper statement fee (for Free or Everywhere Connect)
$4 Inactive accounts (monthly fee after THREE MONTHS with no activity)

Fee schedule / account agreement is 61 pages long. I will fall asleep before I finish.

Not normal: They may have different fee schedules for different states/regions, as my fee page says “Bristol, Virginia location is considered to be within East Tennessee market. Tennessee pricing applies at that location.”

Awaiting Gadget’s update – the Superstar of the Commonwealth of Virginia, as always.

Thank you for the complement. Still waiting for the approval e-mail. After I submitted application, I did get a generic e-mail but it just said to wait for another.

“If you have submitted your application

Check your inbox for a verification email that permits us to fund your account correctly and protects your identity. It’s a quick and easy process.

First, we will make a small withdrawal from the funding account you entered on your application.
If the process is successful, within 2 business days we will send you an email with a confirmation number and a website link.
We will ask you to click the link and enter the transfer amount and confirmation number.
Once we receive your verification, we will withdraw the complete amount you specified for your initial deposit and fund your new account.”

I didn’t come across to order the debit card when applying for everywhere connect. I am assuming it comes after final approval but does anyone know for sure?

Gadget
Gadget

Just going off memory, but I think if you did the “Everywhere Connect” checking, a debit card was automatic and was listed as part of the product. It’s a requirement to keep the account fee free, so obviously your going to want one. Besides, most banks today you have to jump through hoops to opt-out of a debit card.

Gadget
Gadget

Per the main bank website, both the Simple(Free) and Everywhere Connect accounts come with a debit card. It will be ok, if they approve the account anyway.

Gadget
Gadget

Called to check on the status of the application. Spoke to a regular CSR (not someone who processes new accounts) and said she knows that new accounts are backed up, and they are hoping to be caught up by early next week. I suppose I could have asked her to transfer me, but I am not really in a rush on this one.

Gadget
Gadget

Account approved – not chex sensitive – no hard pull – not near branch (200 miles away by car), in correct state.

Slow, and doing it the old fashioned way, with paper documents – you have to call to get your account number to sign up for online banking, which I just missed the 7PM cutoff.

Got the approval e-mail tonight, From: “Online Accounts”, Subj: “Welcome to HomeTrust Bank”

“Thank you for submitting your online account application with HomeTrust Bank. Your new account is now open and ready to be used! In a few days, you will be receiving a letter in the mail with a document requiring your signature to finalize the opening of your account. Please ensure that you sign the enclosed form, and then either return that document using the prepaid envelope or drop the form by any of our convenient locations.

In the meantime, if you have any questions about your new account with HomeTrust, or if you are interested in enrolling in our electronic services such as Online Banking, Telephone Banking, or eStatements, please do not hesitate to contact our Customer Care Center at (800) 627-1632, Monday through Friday from 8am – 7pm or Saturdays from 9am – 3pm. Going paperless by enrolling in eStatements will ensure that your account will be exempt from monthly paper statement fees.”

Trial WITHDRAWAL appeared in funding account. Verified using their website link from another e-mail.

Occurred to me this is the first bank I have seen do a single trial withdrawal vs. two micro deposits. Imagine how pissed someone would be if they caused the funding account to go NSF over a 60-something cent charge. I wonder if they will refund my 60-something cents?

Gadget
Gadget

Called to get account number. They ask for your name, last 4 ssn, and the ID number from the D/L you used. Got my acct number, hung up, and signed up for online banking, no issue. Well…

Paper statement fee. They show I was charged the $1.50 paper statement fee on Jan 31st. Next they show my 60 something cent deposit on Feb 1st. So I am 80 something cents in the HOLE!

I ASSUME they will go back in and credit the $1.50 fee, but really, not the way I wanted to start my relationship with this bank. Already overdraft… LOL SMH! I will give it a couple days before I go off on them. Watch me get assessed a $30+ NSF fee too and see me explode!

PSA, get yourself on ONLINE statements before the end of the month!!!

Gibunono
Gibunono

Hi Gadget, what type of paperworks/documents they ask for opening the checking account?

Gadget
Gadget

None. Used D/L number on application. They didn’t request copies of anything, but I have been at the same address for 15+ years.

I think they are mailing me a signature card to sign and mail back, prepaid envelope. Unless they have further directions in the letter to submit other stuff… no mention of it so far.

Waiting to see my funding deposit hit to do anything with the account. Still showing the paper statement fee causing a negative balance, so I definitely don’t want to throw any micro or trial deposits at it and have those go NSF. FNB PA did that to me once, and had to call 3 times to get the fee refunded.

Thanks for the info. I’m assuming no minimum for debit card purchases? And the ETF does say for 4 months on the site itself. Did it say 6 months in the disclosure forms you got?

Regardless, if I’m approved, I’d keep the account open longer than 6 months to take advantage of the $5 monthly bonus.

Gadget
Gadget

Yes, no minimum on debit (yet… I bet that changes). Yes, fee schedule from bank says 6 month ETF.

My initial funding posted today. Still had $1.50 paper fee, so I sumitted SM to refund. Waiting on debit/signature card snail mail.

Gadget
Gadget

Got signature card today, waiting on debit card. Then, got a call from Hometrust, saw the caller ID, and instantly thought her comes the “we reviewed your information and cannot continue our relationship” as sometimes the loss prevention/fraud wienies will reject already approved accounts. So instead I speak to an overly enthusiastic (nearest) branch manager (3 1/2 hrs drive away). She soundly like I personally just gave her $5000, or maybe even a new car, by opening an account with them. As I hung up, I had to wonder if after the promo would they would be so tired and burnt out by the dash out the door many of us will do. Some of us might stick around for the $5 a month debit swipes, so it won’t be a complete mass exodus. But I don’t think we are the superstar clientele they were hoping for with our 50 cent Amazon reloads.

Waiting on debit card and PIN. Going with real DD. S.O. will be getting in on this shortly, and hopefully we have some DP’s for DD.

i actually think i will keep the account… i am in oak ridge, and work in knoxville, and we actually have 2 branches in knoxville, even though i never heard of them. i was keeping a different local bank that i did a deal on about 6 months ago (pinnacle), simply because it was free without issues, and i need a bank in case i have to cash a check (rare)… but i think i will close that now, and go with this hometrust — may as well have the $5 per month for it being my local bank, but i wont be using it for anything else.

missjenniferd1
missjenniferd1

gadget, thats bs that they start charging fees before the first month is even up…. and i saw no option just now during the opening application process to choose estatements…… so they should at least give you a month to get situated and get a deposit in, get your online setup, etc, and give you time to select estatements before they off the bat start charging fees…. it will be a pleasure to take the bonus from this bank…. i hate shady banks!!!

i used chase for my funding account. never saw the trial withdrawal….. i got the account and routing by calling hometrust, and i enrolled online, saw they credited the hometrust the 16cent trial amount that supposedly was debited from chase… called the new account phone # in my welcome email, but they were no assistance there, called the branch, and spoke to someone there, said he had to get back to me regarding the promo code being attached and the 16 cents not ever coming out of chase, to verify i entered the right acct # and rtg#… he called back and said my promo code was attached, and that i did enter the right acct/rtg for chase, but maybe chase kicked it out due to possible fraud etc…. i said well i dont really want to confirm the 16Cents being that i never saw it, and he said it wasnt necessary, and to just fund the account thru my online banking…. i hope this doesnt interfere with my bonus in any way, but he said he didnt think it would matter when the account was funded, and that the bonus was strictly for the direct deposit, and funding shouldnt interfere with the bonus…. it doesnt appear that it would interefere in my opinion either, but i never read any fine print, so i hope im not mistaken…. anyway, ive never NOT had a trial deposit post to the linked account before, so this was weird to me…… chase never contacted me regarding possible fraud for the 16cents, it seems odd they would kick it out for possible fraud, but not notify me to ask if it was….. anyway im just going to fund it thru online banking as suggested…. i know this info probably doesnt pertain to anyone, but just in case it happens to someone else with chase or even any other bank, just thought i’d put this out there as an fyi…

Ughhh… Can I make my own code of Get999?

Someone at the bank must be loving the attention, because it took them several days to process all the backlog from the $100 promo.

Got my paper statement fee refunded today. Also got my 1st statement in the mail. Expect signature card tomorrow?

Jeremy

What’s the best way to get changed from the $100 promo code to $150? Say we used the wrong code by accident? Or just ask if they can help and change it?

Gadget

Most banks won’t match promos, but all we can do is ask. Either pick up the phone or SM, or both, if you don’t get the answer you want to hear/see.

Hopefully if someone has success they will report back. GL!

Success!!! I get to eat my negative comment to Jeremy for breakfast.

Sent SM yesterday requesting a match to $150, explaining that I saw there is a better promotion available, link pointing to promo, exact promo code. No lies or complaints.

The response: “Thank you for contacting the Customer Care Center at HomeTrust Bank with your question regarding your account.

We were able to update the promo code used on the account and it has been applied. ”

Applied today with a PA address and ID, and the app seems to have gone through up to now. They said ‘my account has been created’ at the end of the app. No CC funding. Definitely not Chex sensitive if I get in, have 77/36 and 31/12 inquiries according to the Chex report I just got today in the mail.

Based on the wording, does anyone think a current customer can open a new account with the promo code and still get the bonus?

Saabfan
Saabfan

Just a clarification. Early account termination fee is $25 if your account is closed within 120 days. So, 4 months, not 6 months.

IS250
IS250

Disclosure says 6 months and the website terms say 4 months. So better to be safe and assume 6 months. Also, it’ll net you an extra $10 if you do the monthly debit card purchases for 2 months (everywhere connect account).
