[Expired] [NJ & PA only] Provident Bank $200 Checking Bonus

This offer has expired and is no longer available. View the best current checking bonuses by going here.

Offer at a glance

The Offer

Direct link to offer

  • Provident Bank is offering a $200 checking bonus when you open a new FREE $mart Checking and complete the following requirements:
    • Deposit $50 or more at account opening
    • Have your direct deposit or one ACH automatic debit made to this account within 60 days of account opening

The Fine Print

  • To receive the $200 checking bonus: open a new Provident FREE $mart Checking account; deposit $50 or more at account opening; have your direct deposit or one ACH automatic debit made to this account within 60 days of account opening. After you have completed all the above requirements, we’ll deposit the cash bonus in your new account within 75 days of the last day of the promotion (May 31, 2018).
  • All bank account bonuses are treated as income/interest and as such you have to pay taxes on them

Avoiding Fees

This account has no monthly fees to worry about. According to this comment there is an early account termination fee of $15 if closed within 6 months.

Our Verdict

Looks like you can open the eligible account only if you live in the service area, otherwise it won’t show up as an option. Seems like a great deal given it’s a soft pull, has a good amount of credit card funding and no direct deposit requirement (ACH debit will work) or monthly fees to worry about. This is definitely being added to the best checking bonuses.

Big thanks to reader, GG who let us know. Learn how to find bonuses and contribute to the site here.

I see an “Open Now” link at the top right of the page and can open a FREE $mart Checking. Am I missing, I don’t anywhere saying we have to contact them first?

Patti

Checker, Once you click on apply now it should take you to the app. Did it work for you? Once you enter your zipcode and declare if you’re a new customer or not, it will take you to a page listing several accounts to choose from.
Choose $mart Checking.

Found some information on this bank:

A $15 fee will be assessed against your account if you close it within six (6)
months of account opening.

They do a soft pull using Equifax Verification.

You can apply online but you have to live in their service area to sign up for the $mart Checking account to get the bonus (they allow out of state sign ups online but not for the $mart Checking account with bonus). Maybe if someone visiting one of their branches in NJ or PA can find out?

I concur! I called the bank to see if I would qualify based on my zip code. The guy said “no”

I have used my payroll in the past, but it looks like I can avoid the hassle of doing that for this bonus. What would be the easiest way to meet the “ACH debit” requirement? I looked at this page (https://www.doctorofcredit.com/knowledge-base/list-methods-banks-count-direct-deposits/#Provident_Bank), but still don’t think I’m fully understanding. Can I simply pay off a monthly credit card statment with this account to meet the requirement? Thanks.

KP

My plan is to open the account, fund with a credit card, set up ACH debits for my gas and electric bills (two just to be safe), use the remaining balance to pay back my credit card with the $2500 , and then… profit.

Can any one explain the difference between ACH debit and bill pay?How do I do ACH debit? Thanks

KP
KP

Just add your provident account to your gas, electric, or insurance bill online payment system. Set up an ACH payment via your gas/electric/insurance provider and they will do an ACH debit from your Provident account to pay the bill.

Thanks for the response, I think I follow. I have a student loan payment which is set to automatically pull from my bank on a monthly basis. Do you think that would work?

KP
KP

I think that will work for sure.

They are based out of Jersey City NJ. Branches extend to the west into PA as far as Allentown. Don’t see any down by Philly.

KP
KP

Yeah, closet one to Philly is the Newtown branch; and that’s a hike.

Roger

OK, I see the Contaxt Us screen you have above. Do I actually have to contact the bank through that form to get the bonus?

FYI, I live in downtown Philly.

Just opened in NJ, $2500 funding with Chase United Card approved

Thanks, may I ask if the account is now opened and functional?Sounds like a few folks had their accounts closed/denied due to “unable to verify information”.

Maximum credit card funding is $2,500. FYI, below is what the confirmation screen said, after I submitted the application with my opening deposit info. (I’m surprised they told me the account number before the official approval.)

Update: Three days ago the bank said my online application was being “reviewed,” but then I got no emails and no phone calls, so today I called the customer service number. The rep did some checking and said my application failed for some reason (which they didn’t know). Of course they never notified me. My credit card funding has said “Pending” all this time; the rep said this charge would disappear in a day or two.

The rep recommended I open the account at a branch, rather than trying again online. So I went to the branch. I didn’t mention the promotion because the website didn’t say I needed a special code. I didn’t see any signs or flyers about the promo when I was inside the branch. I have printed out a copy of the website offer just in case they refuse to pay the bonus later on.

Patti
Patti

This was my experience too except that I didn’t go into a branch. It’s too far to make it worth my time. My pending charge dropped.
I’ve yet to hear from anyone who has actually received a bonus but maybe it’s too soon.

CC funding up to $2.5K, Visa or MC only. I just set up the initial deposit through my regular checking because I didn’t want to run the risk that CC funding would code as a CA and not be able to set up the account.

how do you do ach debit? can someone explain

Frito Pendejo

Funding with Chase Marriott biz approved.

Also, SO, green card holder, approved & funded with BoA Premium Rewards

Jim
Jim

Thanks, any indication of Chex sensitivity? Like asking about previous accounts?

And any further requests for ID verification? Sounds like a few folks had their accounts closed/denied due to “unable to verify information”

Frito Pendejo
Frito Pendejo

I received a debit card already, but no additional documents so I can’t actually create an online account yet.

They don’t appear to be CHEX inquiry sensitive, my wife and I have opened a lot of accounts recently.

It truly is for NJ/PA residents only. Confirmed that even if you work in NJ/PA you do not qualify.

KP

Opened account at the link charging $2500 to my Capital One Quicksilver. Chase Freedom Unlimited cockblocked me – my cash advance limit is set to $100.00 so tread carefully with that. UPDATE: Chase sent an SMS asking if I authorized the charge. Too late now though. Oh well, the UR would’ve been nice to have.

I didn’t see anything confirming the bonus is attached, but since I clicked the ‘Open Now’ button in the link, I should be ok. Still, would love to have confirmation that bonus is attached lol.

Mike
Mike

Customer service at Provident informed me that you will receive bonus only if you have received post card. It means it is targeted. Not sure what should I do?

Frito Pendejo
Frito Pendejo

Worst case its $2,500 free MS and maybe you’ll get lucky and get the $200 anyway.

MH
MH

I also checked with customer service and got the same information. I was told that only customers targeted with a mailer will get the bonus. If you are in the service area you can still open an account even if you weren’t targeted, but you won’t get the bonus.

Frito Pendejo
Frito Pendejo

There is no targeted language on the offer page, and the direct offer page is easily reachable via a google search for this bank. It would seem like a breach of contract to deny the bonus at this point.

KP
KP

Agree with Frito, not so sure this is targeted – its quite accessible. And agree again that if we don’t get the bonus, funding via credit card will at least help with minimum spend and generate some good cash back, miles, and UR points for people – so not a total loss.

zjts
zjts

does anyone have a scan or pic of the mailer? I do not know if it can be posted here, but a reply would be greatly appreciated

Alex
Alex

It is not targeted. I actually did receive that postcard – there is no name on it, just addressed to Our Neighbor.

Noah
Noah

Do you happen to have a picture of the postcard?

Kyle
Kyle

They called me and were confirming it is targeted and they have a list of names of who they sent it out to. They stated if the name that applies online isn’t one that they sent a postcard to they will not receive the bonus. I decided to have them cancel my account and reverse my initial funding. They seem to not understand what is going on, and they don’t even know what is on their own website. Not someone I would want to bank with.

Patti
Patti

This bank sounds scummy like they’re trying to weasel their way out of paying bonuses.
It’s like BMO Harris all over again.

zalmy

Can you please post the picture? Would be ridiculous of them to deny the bonus on the “targeted” grounds, but still, you can’t be too safe.

zjts
zjts

would you possibly email scan or pic to zjtsgml@gmail.com? I’d greatly appreciate this

KP
KP

BTW, pending transaction on Capital One Quicksilver is a little scary. Pending language says “The Provident Bank ATM”. Cash advance is set at $1500 and the limit is intact. The $2500 charge is also subtracted from credit limit so I should be ok. I hope!

KP
KP

Received a letter in the mail today saying I was not approved, with specific language reading “unable to verify the information you provided on the application”. The $2500 pending transaction has reversed. I will call on Monday to find out what happened.

Jim
Jim

Very unfortunate 🙁 Mind sharing how you resolved this?

May I ask if they request drivers license/ID for verification? Curious what information they need verifying and was unable to

Skinnyelvis
Skinnyelvis

Same thing happened to me. I called & they said to reapply b/c their website isn’t the best. 2nd attempt worked with no problem.

Jim
Jim

Thanks. Did they request DL/verification docs the second time around?

And are you in NJ/PA? I primarily want to open for CC funding

Sam
Sam

This bank’s phone customer service is a nightmare. Easiest thing to do is to actually go to the branch, get as much resolved there as you can. Then call these morons on the phone to fix anything else (like online access) that’s what I did.

Sam
Sam

Needed to spend exactly $2500 on my card anyway, took my chances and opened this account.

Jim
Jim

Mind updating on if you succeeded in opening, and which CC you used to fund?

Also curious if any Chex sensitivity, like if they asked about your previous accounts/inquiries?

Thanks
